No place like home? — Volga Germans in cultural limbo, photographed by Ira Thiessen

There are thought to be around 600,000 ethnic Volga Germans remaining in Russia today. Their complex place in history has left them alienated by both Russian and German cultures. Not exactly Germans now as part of new communities, yet they don’t entirely feel at home in Russia, either. Theissen explores their sense of alienation, felt by the peculiar community in Privet Germania (Hello Germany): 

“The majority only knew [their German home] from stories. Upon arrival, they had to quickly realize that their identity was no longer purely German.”
