their friendship is a source of great happiness in my life

🌱Green Witch Tips🌱

I get a lot of asks about plants; what dried herbs to start with, what kind are good for beginners, what I would recommend new witches own, how to grow them, etc. That’s totally okay because you guys know I love helping you out but to make things easier I’m just going to talk about plants for a while, okay? Enjoy!

Let’s Start At The Beginning🌿

“What should a beginner witch have in their cabinet?”

I get asked a lot what are some good herbs or dried flowers to have for people who can’t grow their own. Just remember, it’s not necessary to have herbs in your practice, all you need to be a witch is a desire to be a witch! But these are the herbs I recommend and/or are my personal favorites.💜

  • Orange Peel - This is great for uplifting energies and bringing happiness into your life, they can help with intuition, bring prosperity and abundance, and they can help strengthen friendships and relationships. They’re loaded with Vitamin C & A, it’s a powerful antioxidant and great for relieving congestion(add it to your bath!) You can eat them, burn them, make a tea, add it to your bath, whatever you see fit!
  • Basil - This is great for bringing in money and prosperity, love, flying/astral work, exorcisms, and is great for protection. Basil has potent antioxidant, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. It is also an anti-inflammatory.
  • Mint - Mint is probably one of my favorite healing herbs, it can help bring you strength, luck, money, and safe travels. Mint is an anti-inflammatory and an antiseptic. Ideal for treating indigestion, flatulence, varicose veins, headaches, migraines, skin irritations, rheumatism, toothache, and general fatigue.
  • Chamomile - One of my favorite meditation plants, it also aids in centering and finding peace, protection, self-love and healing! It’s great for fevers, indigestion, it works as an anti-inflammatory for wounds, and makes a good insect repellent.
  • Rosemary: It’s often used for protection, love, purification, healing, sleep, and youth. When burned it emits powerful cleansing and purifying vibrations and is used to rid a place of negativity. It provides anti-inflammation, anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antisepticproperties. And research provides ample evidence that rosemary not only improves memory, but helps fight cancer.
  • Onion: It is used for protection, exorcism, healing, money, and abundance in life. Grown in pots or in the garden they repel negative energy and evil intentions. You can cook onions to attract money and luck. Onions are high in vitamin C, a good source of fiber, and are good for regulating blood pressure.
  • Thyme: It can be used for good health, healing, sleep, courage, love, purification, psychic powers. It can be burned for good health and purification and can be used in healing spells. It can be used to help bronchitis, whooping cough, sore throat, colic, arthritis, upset stomach, stomach pain (gastritis), diarrhea, bedwetting, intestinal gas (flatulence), parasitic worm infections and skin disorders.

Growing Your Own Indoor Plants 🌿

These are what I recommend for beginners(inside) I tried to include a variety of herbs, succulents, and houseplants because I know some people prefer one of the other. This includes generic care tips like storage needed, how much light, water, etc. If you’re looking for magical plant care tips scroll down to the next category! All plants picked are cat and dog friendly.

  • Spider Plants - absorb negativity while improving both the energy and air quality of your home. They’re great for low-key daily cleansing. The pot does not need drainage, moderate sunlight, during growth water once or so a week, at adult(one year) water more frequently, during the summer do not let the soil dry out, keep it moist! Generic garden soil is fine.
  • African Violets - ruled by the planet Venus, promoting spirituality and peaceful vibrations. Their five-petaled flowers are protective and link the plant with the pentagram. Keep them in a warm location where they get plenty of light, and these darling little plants will happily bloom for you all year round. They’re roots are very fragile so over watering can definitely kill them, make sure the soil is completely dry to touch before water. They do best with soils that include peat moss or vermiculite.
  • Succulents - bringers of love and abundance and can be among the easiest of house plants to grow.  Succulents are ruled by the moon. Succulents definitely need plots that have drainage holes, the soil should be a mix of rocks and soil or just buy premade cacti soil! Water two to three times a month depending on size. Full sunlight is best!
  • Swedish or English Ivy -  are protective as well as decorative, and never more so than when trained to grow outside on house walls. Potted and brought indoors, they serve the same function, for their curious stems and leaves drive away evil and negativity from their dwelling place. They are also though to promote fidelity and fertility. Medium light, simple garden soil, they do like moss, ivy’s prefer to be on the dry side when the soil has been dry for 2-3 days then water!
  • Catnip - can bring love into the home, works for cat magic or dieties, helps promote happiness and aids in sleep/astral travel magic. It can be successfully grown on a sunny windowsill, providing you give it enough water and remember to pinch out the flowers to encourage leaf growth. You can start pinching off leaves as soon as the plant hits about 6 - 8 inches.
  • Basil - it can help steady the mind, brings happiness, love, peace, and money and protects against insanity. Keep basil in direct or medium sunlight, keep soil moist, make sure to pick the leaves regularly to encourage growth throughout the summer.
  • Lemon Balm - associated with the moon and neptune, can be used to dispel melancholy and depression, it is traditionally used for compassion, fertility, happiness, healing, longevity, love, mental health, prosperity, and divination. Lemon balm likes a steady supply of water, but good drainage is a must. The plant recovers quickly from wilt, so it’s best to err on the side of dry rather than too wet, which will encourage root rot. Any good, fast-draining potting soil will likely do.
  • Thyme(a personal favorite) - planet venus, it’s good for clairvoyance, cleansing, courage, divination, dreams, exorcism, faeries, happiness, healing, love, money, prevents nightmares, protection, psychic development, aannnddd purification. It’s a pretty useful little plant and it’s super cute if you ask me! Water completely each time but allow the pot to dry before watering again. Fertilize thyme with a weak solution of fish emulsion or liquid seaweed once a month - I swear by it! Trim off flowers and dry them for a sachet or use them in tea, bath, etc!
  • Rosemary -  It’s often used for protection, love, purification, healing, sleep, and youth. When burned it emits powerful cleansing and purifying vibrations and is used to rid a place of negativity. Same grow tips as thyme!
  • Orchid -  it can be used for elegance and beauty, concentration, strengthening memory, love, intuition, harmony, focus, and will power. I personally love having my orchids around during self love magic and glamour spells. It needs ample water but should be allowed to dry out some between watering - make sure to not over water it. Some orchids can be air plants!

Magical Tips For Growing Plants🌿

Just some tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years, some of these may not be super witchy but still definitely helpful for strong plant babies!

  • Sing or talk to your plants daily! Not only will the positive energy they receive help them grow strong, so will the more direct source of Carbon Dioxide. 💕
  • Use rain water or moon water to water your plants! You can really use any kind of water but I advise against sea water unless you boil the salt out first.
    • Bonus! Charge your water with crystals. I like to leave mine out under the moon with moss agate, clear quartz, and rose quartz to encourage growth into a strong, beautiful plant.
  • If you smoke weed, ashes are lovely to give to plants once a week, most ashes work to be honest. You can also use left over tea leaves to compost as well, you can infuse/encourage your plants with energies of the tea!
  • You can also include eggshell powder or water from when you boil eggs in your waterings once a week to help aid it’s growth.
    • I wouldn’t suggest feeding them plant food until their adults though just because it’s really simple to over feed them. But it’s okay to throw some eggshells in the beginning.
  • Sigils! Put sigils on everything, your watering can, the containers your plants are in, on the window they receive their sunlight from! Have fun, gardening is a great time to explore yourself and your craft.
  • Leave your plants under the moon to let the charge. Or when they’re in the sun let that charge them to bring energy and happiness into your home and life.
  • Leave crystals next to your plants or create little spell jar to keep in your garden. I have one of citrine, clear quartz, bay, oak, and a little love letter to Freyr because he’s my patron god and a god of nature.
  • This may sound weird but I swear my little green guys love jivin’ to music, play some and dance around with them, let them be lively and included in your life. We’ve been listening to a lot of Janis Joplin lately.
  • If your plant indoors you don’t have worms!! Oh no! Poke little holes in your soil (after their healthy sprouts) to make sure the soil isn’t compacted.
  • Understand how much space your plants are going to need.  It’s a common mistake for gardeners to get too small of pots. Research the type of roots your plants have - not all grow down some grow wide and need wider more shallow pots.
  • Look for the best place in the house for each plant, and don’t be afraid to try different locations until you find the best spot. Some plants are picky and that’s a-okay!

I hope this is able to help someone with their little green babies. Gardening can bring such joy to ones life, I hope it can for you!🌿

Why the Rolling Stone's Fansplaining of Harry Styles Misses the Point
Saskia Postema, Contributor

It is safe to say that almost the entire world has recently been exposed to the solo debut of Harry Styles, member of the band One Direction. While he was not the first one to start up a solo project – Zayn Malik left the band in 2015 to pursue a solo career, whereas both Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson released solo material in 2016 – he was, perhaps after Zayn’s dramatic departure, the most hyped and anticipated artist out of the original bandmembers.

It’s been two weeks since Harry released his incredibly successful #1 debut single, Sign of the Times, which leads his self-titled LP that will hit stores on the 12th of May. Subsequently, critics have been quick to write their reviews, labeling the rock anthem as an epic song that establishes Harry as a credible artist. Part of the promotional roll-out of Harry’s debut seems to be centered around the cultivation of that notion: Harry Styles is to be seen as an authentic, honest, yet mysterious, credible musician. Given the fact that Rolling Stone profiles itself as the market-leading music magazine when it comes to crediting such artistry, it was to be expected that a profile and cover issue of Harry Styles would follow suit.

In a companion piece, Rolling Stone published a so-called ‘fansplaining’ column on their website – delving into the fanbase that has supported Harry Styles throughout the years, probably aimed at gauging their reaction to his debut. An interesting take, given the fact that the journalistic lens of Rolling Stone seems to focus mostly around discrediting the opinion of young women, particularly those who have been avid fans of the music that One Direction has put out in previous years, and who have supported Harry and his peers throughout that time. Aside from the fact that such an understanding of music is abhorrently misogynist, as it values the middle-aged white male’s opinion as somehow more legitimate than those of women (even when those women were able to recognize the artist’s talent years prior to those men who were blinded by their fragile masculinity), the article also failed to do what it intended: Explain what makes these fans so loyal to their idol.

There seems to be a deep-rooted misunderstanding of the relationship between fans and the artist they support, starting with the idea that all fans are the same. They are not. As such, many internal disagreement can exist within a fandom, while all maintaining the same admiration for the artist. It should be clear that fans are perhaps, aside from the artist themselves, the most critical of the output provided. People might find that contradictory, but I have found this to be true amongst many different groups of fans. It is similar to having a best friend that loves you unconditionally, but that will set you straight and call you out on your mistakes when you stumble. Fans are there to help the artist along, but that doesn’t mean they will not hesitate to analyze, criticize and educate their idol as well as their peers if they feel this is necessary. Such criticism stems from the expectations they have formed about said output products. Most fans will distinguish between music on the one hand, and image on the other hand. This is separate from the expectations and perception fans have from their idol’s personality. However, they will expect both music and image to reflect the personality of the artist – this is where the honesty comes into play.

For those who have been following One Direction’s career and musical development, the style of music chosen by Harry did not come as a surprise. In fact, while many reviewers seem to shy away from making the comparison, it seems that Harry’s music seems to progress most naturally out of the latest albums of One Direction. Songs like Walking in the Wind, If I Could Fly, or the slightly older Ready to Run and Where do Broken Hearts Go all reflect similar soft-rock vibes. It also fits the fans’ perception of what Harry’s personal taste in music is like, as he’s always hinted at big artists from the 70s and 80s as his big musical influences. His continuous rejection of explaining his lyricism is also consistent with the Harry fans have come to know and love over the years – he’s expressed many a times how much he values music as art. And art is interpreted by the person observing the artpiece, he likes that a song might give different people different perspectives, as long as it resonates, it’s enough.

This links back to image. In my view, many fans see Harry as fiercely protective of his private life. And with good reason, given how he had to grow up in the limelight – starting off on the X Factor, a reality show that is as much a storytelling drama series as it is a singing competition. However, this is also where there is a deep dissatisfaction amongst fans. Part of celebrity culture is providing the public with certain glimpses into your private life, and fans are quite ambivalent in their appreciation of this. On the one hand, fans want to see their idols be happy and have the opportunity to talk to them, or get to know them. On the other hand, fans recognize the flagrant violation of privacy in terms of stalkers, paparazzi and ‘inside sources’ speaking to the press.

In Harry’s case, this is where the dichotomy is most apparent. While he himself never speaks out about his private life or relationships, not even his friendships with other celebs such as Ed Sheeran, Alexa Chung or Nick Grimshaw; his private life has quite possibly been most speculated about and most prominent in tabloids out of all the One Direction members. Rolling Stone does an abysmal job at respecting the same mysteriousness they hail Harry for trying to uphold by filling in the blanks and pushing him to talk about relationships he’s chosen not to address in the past. Their leading title for their profile does not focus on the music, or him as a new solo artist, but rather on him ‘opening up about famous flings’. It is a common misconception that fans want to hear him say that he’s single, or want to know the ins and outs of who he beds. Rather, fans want to hear what makes Harry happy. They don’t want to marry him, they want to know if he’s hydrated and well loved by his family and friends – if he’s taken enough holidays and if there’s anything in particular he still wants to achieve or cross of his bucket list; that is if he has one. They want to hear him honour the fundamental friendships that underpin the appreciation and adoration fans carry for all One Direction members. They want to know what inspires him – not who. Does he order a cheeseburger at McDonald’s, or does he enjoy a Big Mac on cheat days?

Similarly, many fans will find the sudden recognition by Rolling Stone and other acclaimed music reviewers to be bittersweet. While they will feel proud of Harry at seeing him succeed and get this approval, they also call it for what it is: a thinly-veiled rejection of One Direction and the Harry Styles prior to his solo debut. It is an honour to be hailed as the next David Bowie or Mick Jagger, but the line between inspiration and imitation is thin, which makes fans wary. What is more – the celebration of Harry’s apparent ‘new honesty and authenticity’ (again a rejection of his previous work) is rather awkward, when the reviews do not seem to provide Harry Styles with the room to be iconic as himself. They make sure to draw comparisons with a multitude of icons from the past, as if every choice he’s made has been infused with the mentality to emulate his predecessors. Fans want Harry to succeed by being true to who he is, and while his music gets recognition, it’s still not perceived as being something that is only fully Harry’s.Finally, it is important to not just address what fans expect from their idol, but also what they take away from them. In Rolling Stone, Harry Styles shared that what hurts him are fundamental issues that are lacking in today’s society – things like ‘equal rights, for everyone – all races, sexes, everything’. He’s a feminist, has been involved in the HeforShe campaign, and has expressed his support for LGBTQ+ as part of One Direction. He was frequently seen waving a rainbow flag in concerts, stated that ‘here at One Direction, we love love. Love is love,’ and has worn rainbow bracelets – most recently even a rainbow pin proudly fastened on his shirt. Moreover, he’s taken great care in answering questions about partners, favouring the word ‘spouse’ and always using gender-neutral pronouns. Harry is proud of the fact that he wears 26inch women’s skinny jeans, and continues to present himself as vulnerable in photoshoots, and to break gender norms by not shying away from the colour pink, silk and sheer, glitter boots, or wearing nailpolish. While some might not see the significance in this, these moves are incredibly powerful and can help people of all ages feel more accepted and comfortable with being who they are – it makes them feel normal and safe in a heteronormative world that is dominated by gender stereotypes. What is more, it reinforces their love and support for the artist, as they agree with their worldview – it’s a connection on a more fundamental level, that is not fueled by romantic love interest, or aesthetically pleasing faces and outfits.

Moreover, it inspires fans to change their views on society, and to extend the same charity and empathy as their idol does. In this respect, One Direction and its individual members have - unfortunately - been grossly underrated. Only recently did Steve Aoki note the incredibly power held by this fanbase in particular, calling the fans ‘an institution, like an army of bees’, recognizing how Louis Tomlinson’s fans were mainly responsible for his debut single’s smash success – creating and coordinating their own promotional campaigns, creating merchandise and posters, and requesting the song on radios. But this dedication does not limit itself to seeing their favourite artist succeed. Inspired by the great amount of charity work that One Direction has done itself, ranging from participating in Comic Relief and being patrons of numerous charities to Louis Tomlinson spending over 3 million pounds to organize a fundraiser in the form of a Princess Ball for ill children, the fans have bolstered this attitude to give to those in need and started charity drives in honour of the multiple members. The popular account 1DFansGive encourages fans to donate money to the charities that Harry and his peers are patrons of or have expressed their support for – with unparalleled, consistent success.

These positive aspects of the unique relationship between Harry Styles/1D and the fanbase are entirely lacking or even erased in media representation, which further fuels the dichotomy and love-hate relationship that fans have with media outlets. They stigmatize his fans as being teenage girls who fantasize about a relationship with him, and therefore are obsessed with his sex life – when this is frankly an insulting and gross overgeneralization. It is off-putting that fans are shamed for behavior they do not demonstrate, all the while the press engages in exactly that same behavior. It is not fans who force the idea of Harry Styles dating Taylor Swift or Kendall Jenner down anyone’s throats – it’s the press. It is not fans that prioritize his romantic relationships over his musical abilities and interests – it’s the press. On the other hand – it’s not the press that makes an artist successful, it’s the fans. And most importantly, it’s not the press that annually raises thousands of dollars inspired by an artist’s activism - it’s the fans. And the press doesn’t even report it; not even when they attempt fansplaining.

My advice? Don’t try something if the verb is derived from a harmful, toxic, divisive, humiliating and belittling behaviour that takes away someone’s voice and agency. Fansplaining is just as appreciated by fans as mansplaining is by women - not at all.

miscellaneous tips for your first year of college/university:

academics

- try as much as possible to avoid 8 am classes. you could do it in high school, but trust me when I say you don’t want them in college. (but also realize that sometimes you have to take them if you want to graduate on time, especially if the classes are only offered during a certain time.)

- go to office hours. go to office hours. for the love of god, go to office hours. you want to be on good terms with the professors, especially those in your major department because chances are you’ll be in their class more than once and you’ll need a letter of rec from them.

- but if you’re trying to raise your grade, kiss up to the TA (teacher’s assistant). they’re the ones that are in charge of your grade, not the professor. they know you better because of the smaller class sizes and they’ll know how much work you’re really putting into the class.

- it’s quite possible the pull off writing a 5-7 page paper the night before it’s due and still get a good grade on it if you know the material well.

- address emails to the professor with “Hello Professor, …”, include the class you’re in, and conclude with your name and student ID number. be professional and keep in mind that the professor lectures to hundreds of students.

- bring a cold bottle of water to morning lectures and drink from it if you feel like falling asleep. the cold will keep you up (and it’s healthier and cheaper than coffee).

- library floors get quieter the higher you move up.

- if you want to take adderall, don’t start with a large dose. start with 10mg, see how you handle it, and go from there. adderall can be dangerous if you OD. some side effects of adderall include trouble falling asleep and loss of appetite.

- it’s in your best interests not to plagiarize. properly cite all the sources you use. maybe you got away with it in high school, but that shit won’t fly in college.

- study groups are only helpful and beneficial to you if everyone in that group has something to contribute.

- self control, momentum, and evernote are great productivity apps for your mac.

dorm life

- tide pods for laundry is so much easier than lugging down a bottle of detergent and a separate bottle of softener and then having to measure them out.

- if you’ve already washed your colored clothes at least once, you don’t need to separate lights from darks. just remember to use cold water. (I myself am a lazy fuck and I don’t sort my laundry at all. my clothes are fine.)

- ask your RA to get a clock radio for the bathroom (if it’s communal) so music can drown out the sound of the person taking a shit in the stall next to you.

- don’t be afraid to speak up if your roommate does something that is annoying you. approach them in a friendly way (chances are, they didn’t even notice it was bothering you) so that they’ll give you the same courtesy. communication is key.

- you don’t have to be friends with your roommate. you just have to live with them. don’t try and force a friendship if it clearly isn’t working.

- don’t be that asshole that hits their snooze button 10 times so their alarm goes off repeatedly.

- instant noodles = life.

- bring tupperware and hide it in your backpack so you can sneak food out of the dining commons.

partying

- don’t go to parties if you don’t like them.

- don’t drink any hard liquor that comes from a plastic handle.

- you should not be with friends that try to convince you to violate your morals.

- conversely, you should also not be with friends that judge you if you don’t share their morals.

- always. use. the. buddy. system.

- if someone passes out/falls asleep, lay them on their side, not their back. that way, if they throw up, they won’t choke.

- if you get to the point where you need an ambulance because of all of the drugs/alcohol you ingested, tell the medic the truth about the substances you took. they’re not interested in putting you in jail; they’re just trying to save your fucking life. (I can personally attest to this.)

- make sure the change your privacy settings on facebook if you don’t want your family seeing pictures of you with alcohol in the background, dressed promiscuously, etc. some friends don’t ask before putting up/tagging you in pictures.

sex

- to someone that has never had sex, it seems like everyone is having sex all the time and that’s all that matters, but trust me when I say that’s the furthest thing from the truth. don’t let the pressure get to you.

- use condoms even if you’re on birth control to protect from STDs.

- try to take a sex ed/human sexuality class. (the one I took was offered through the sociology department.) in universities as opposed to high school, the sex ed is more comprehensive, usually covers queer relationships (mine did), and does not teach from an abstinence-only POV. they’re very helpful even for those who have had a lot of experience.

- don’t expect people you hook up with at parties to be anything more than that - hookups.

- abstaining from sex doesn’t make you any better than someone who fucks a new person every weekend and being sexually active doesn’t make you “cooler” and someone who has never had sex. remember that.

- don’t use flavored condoms for penetrative sex; you could get a yeast infection. flavored condoms are meant for oral sex only.

- speaking of condoms, it’s really easy to get them for free. student health hands them
out like candy the first couple weeks of school.

- get tested first if you and your partner want to have unprotected sex. seriously.

free free to message me any more questions you might have about college/uni. I’d be happy to help/share from my personal experience or elaborate on anything I’ve said here. reblog and add more tips if you have them; I’m sure i haven’t thought of everything. have a great upcoming school year, freshmen!

Okada’s character once again made me love them with all my heart. Jun is literally once of the most human characters I’ve seen in anime and I love it so much. I could relate so much to her “being to talktive problem”. Her problem is so real that actually hearts. Loved it.

Synopsis

Jun is a girl whose words have been sealed away. She was once a very happy girl, but because of a certain thing she said when she was very young, her family was torn apart. One day, the egg fairy appeared in front of her and sealed away her ability to talk in order to stop her from hurting anybody else. Since this traumatic experience, Jun lives in the shadows away from the limelight. But, one day, she is nominated to become an executive member of the “community outreach council.” On top of that, Jun is also appointed to play the main lead in their musical…

This anime movie is so pure in many ways and all the praise il could recieve would be never sufficient to show how beatiful it is. It’s the proof that a masterpiece survives time. Even after 29 years this movie is out it sill remains a gem among anime.

Whatch this anime if you’re looking for:

  •   A great psychological drama impact, very well developed
  • The best sibiling love
  •   Real catastrophes, the provoked damages, the victims and the ruined lives of the remained people
  • Human nature, or rather how the society works, are painted beautifully
Davai! (Or why Otayuri actually wins the world)

(Tweets by @Aki_the_Geek)

I’ve been thinking a lot about this comment of Kubo-sensei’s. It’s just the most adorable thing I have read in a while. I am not the biggest Otayuri fan, but only mostly because they’re seriously too young for me at this point. I do like their tandem, however, and I am enjoying the attention they are getting recently with the official photos and everything.

This comment, though, just paints such a cute picture for me: Otabek as a god of victory, like a mystical butterfly who ignores and flits past everyone else but chooses to rest on one particular mortal’s shoulder and bless him with strength and victory.

Listen, this is what is great about what Kubo-sensei said. Yuuri Katsuki has the gold rings that connect him to Viktor as his lucky charm - we know this. BUT! Yuri Plisetsky’s lucky charm, on the other hand, is Otabek Altin.

Yuri’s a great character. He is an angry teenager, but also a talented one who has big dreams and the actual skills to achieve those dreams. From the very beginning, we know this. It was even a point he has above Yuuri Katsuki.

He aims to win and does not see what others might consider obstacles. So what if it will be his first Grand Prix? He’s awesome. He won the juniors series. He can win as a senior, too.

Yuri, however, is also very immature. He is pretty poor at expressing himself and seems to shortcut through having to process most personal encounters and interactions by just being angry all the time. Affection for others embarrasses him, which is why he gets so high-strung around Viktor and Yuuri.

(I can’t really blame the kid, though. Those two just have no chill. They’re embarrassing.)

Interestingly though, Yuri seemed to calm down after Otabek came in the picture. It’s a complete 180. Yuri still had that passion, but somehow it became more tempered, less angry and more focused - so much so that the moment Otabek came in, Yuri broke a world record and then proceeded to win his first Grand Prix Final.

I am not saying that it is Otabek’s doing, like an actual god of victory. That would be ridiculous, and it’s more an expression than anything else. The timing is just pretty neat, and isn’t that how people develop lucky charms in the first place? You happen to have them right at the moment of a great win. It is also not as if Otabek was completely useless. He did provide a friend to Yuri, who thus far had been going on without someone he can actually call a friend. Everyone around him were either older than him, a competitor, a mentor or a teacher. I think Otabek calmed Yuri down by reminding him that he can just be himself… well, a cool version of himself anyway. Yuri actually sort of acted his age with Otabek around. For instance, this?

I thought Yuri was kind of cool-guy-posing here - you know, acting chill, even looks kind of smug. Lol, this reminded me so much of my younger brother when he was about Yuri’s age. He was such a useless brat at home and was pissed off at everything and nothing 99% of the time, but the moment his friends came over or one of them called him on the phone, he sort of became this cool version of himself - wittier, sharper, less fidgety. Lmao, his voice even became deeper. Smh at these boys…

What I also love about Otabek’s character is that he reminds us of Yuri’s name. Names are a big deal, okay, and I thought that Yuri being Yurio was kind of like him being a secondary character to Yuuri Katsuki - Yuuri #2, if you will. Ever since episode 2, Yuri is Yurio, and for every episode hence, he is Yurio. It was actually a bit of a shock to me when Otabek yelled this out in episode 11:

I was literally, “Oh yeah, that’s Yurio’s name.” I know Yakov and Lilia call Yurio by his name, but somehow it was when Otabek was calling him by this did Yurio become Yuri to me again. My theory is that it is Otabek’s manner, this I-know-you-call-him-Yurio-and-I-don’t-care-because-his-name-is-Yuri attitude he has going, that is somehow more convincing than anyone else. It is as if no one else matters in his world than Yuri Plisetsky. It is ridiculous to call him by anything other than his name because to Otabek, Yuri is Yuri #1. He probably calls Yuuri “the other Yuri”, “the Japanese Yuri” or just plain “Katsuki”.

So yeah, Otabek enters Yuri’s life and now Yuri has that source of affirmation that is outside family, who is a peer and even a close contemporary. He is no longer fighting alone. Yuri’s a strong guy, but he is still a kid, and at that age people can be quite vulnerable. No 15-year-old is so self-sufficient and self-confident that they can stand on their own at all times - at least not to my knowledge. That is why I love this friendship and why I love that Otabek came along. I think his coming triggered something that Yuri has long been building throughout the series but has yet to stabilize - his strength, his growth, his maturity as a skater as well as a person.

And actually, Yuri did win in the end. I think the series did not celebrate Yuri’s win enough and admittedly, even I was on such a high during those last weeks of the show that I could not be happy for him all that much. Episode 11? I couldn’t get over Yuri’s world record; I did not want to see Viktor dethroned. By episode 12, I still couldn’t look Yuri in the face. I was bitter about his world record and I was bitter about Yuuri Katsuki not winning the Grand Prix.

BUT, it’s time to face it: Yuri Plisetsky is amazing. He won the GPF on his senior debut. He beat a world record. His coach is obviously grooming him to be the next Viktor Nikiforov, and actually, the series has been hinting at it before hitting us on the face with it in episode 11 - Yuuri Katsuki is not the next Viktor Nikiforov, but Yuri Plisetsky is. What is more amazing is that he might even surpass Viktor, especially with Yuuri Katsuki as his main rival. Viktor never really had that one rival to push him up further than he thinks he can. We are told that his wins had wide margins from his other competitors. Viktor only had himself to beat each and every time. Yuri, on the other hand, won by a hair’s width and he knows it. He is even more driven now. He will push himself harder than Viktor ever had pushed himself, and that just might tip the scale a little bit more to future Yuri’s favor.

As for Otabek? Nah, he actually does not need to do anything. He is a lucky charm; he just needs to exist. With him around, Yuri is stable, and that’s all that this talented monster skater needs really.

Lol, look at this guy just watching his favorite so proudly:

“I’m not really needed here, but fuck if I’m not staying put to watch and join the cheering.”

Otayuri actually has a lot more going for them, future-wise. They are young, they are talented, and where Viktor and Yuuri are still struggling and see-sawing between victories and losses, Otayuri actually kept a steady climb. We already know and mentioned Yuri’s wins, but Otabek was also actually that steady character from the very beginning who skated well without question and was even the first to qualify for the GPF.

So, yes. In case you are asking, Otayuri is, in fact, the real power couple of the show.

Lmao, TL;DR - Otayuri just trumped Viktuuri and ultimately even stole their gold. The secondary OTP lowkey just beat the main OTP and I, albeit a hardcore Viktuuri shipper and just an Otayuri bystander at best, still find that really hilarious.

It’s Actually You (Part 2)

Pairing: Steve Rogers x reader

Words: 2129

Warnings: insults to the reader, if this can trigger something please don’t read it

Request: You know that bit in CACW, where Bucky and Sam are in the car, and Steve kisses Sharon? Could you write something where the reader is in the car too, and whilst Steve is chatting to Sharon outside, the reader is chatting to Bucky and Sam, and they’re both saying she should tell Steve how she feels. And the reader is getting nervous, but she’s really happy, and feels so excited to tell him. But then she sees him kiss Sharon, and her whole world crumbles? With loads of angst, and Sharon being a b*tch to the reader. One part where possibly a party, or event happens, and Sharon and the reader happen to cross paths in the bathroom, and Sharon totally ruins the reader? Points out all her flaws, including her weight, and her legs. Don’t know why I’m asking for this. But I’m hormonal, and I feel like hardcore heartbreak. Fluff at the end, or no fluff, don’t mind. If you like, maybe a series? Thanks darling;) - for anon

A/N: guys!! I’m SO happy that you liked the first part!! This one is longer and I like it more than the other. I’m kind of proud of this one so I hope you like it

“I said I’m fine,” you said for the millionth time. You were tired of Bucky and Sam bugging you about Steve. It’s not that you were actually fine, it was that you had more pressing matters than this.

“We wanted to check,” Bucky explained. He was worried about you. He was confused as to why Steve had kissed that agent. Bucky had seen how Steve looked at you. Even after so long, Steve was still his best friend and he knew the Captain like the palm of his hand. “That’s all, doll.”

“You know how much we care for you, y/n,” Sam added, putting a comforting hand on your shoulder.

“And I thank you for your concern, but right now we need to prepare our mission not our feelings,” you said smiling at them. You really were thankful. You grabbed one arm of each of the ginormous men and led them to the room where Steve was breaking his brain trying to figure out a tangible and doable plan. It was harder than it seemed.

So much dangers. Your faces where all over the news. You were criminals, for god’s sake. He was planning an undercover mission for the team to gather information about this Zemo guy you found out was messing with Bucky’s head.

“Hey, Stevie,” you greeted with a smile. You brought the men to face him and help plan your mission.

“Hey, y/n. I need your help here, you’re much better at this spy stuff than me,” Steve said. He placed a hand on your back and guided you through all the papers stuck on the wall.

They were people, places and events, product of hours of work and investigation without stopping. Steve explained how he found out Zemo was meeting a source in a private party in Germany. He’d be vulnerable, unaware and unprepared for an intrusion. It was perfect. All you had to do was gather enough information about him.

The only problem was you had to find people who you looked alike to be unnoticed by the guards and guests. It was going to require expensive clothes, tons of make-up and new shoes. This wasn’t a simple mission you happened to be sent to. This was Bucky’s life you were fighting for and, even if you’d known him for only a few weeks, you’d do anything for the man.

After hours of work and too much coffee for it to be healthy, you were ready.

“The party’s being hosted by Herman Scheider, a German business man. Incredibly rich and powerful,” you began explaining. You had a file about the man in your hand. It was only the information you could gather from internet and a few hacked government websites, but it was better than nothing. “He’s suspected of running an illegal business as almost all the guests of this party.”

“Bucky, you’ll have to stay here,” Steve announced sighting sadly. “We’re sorry, but too many people have seen your face in the news. It’s not safe for you to be out there.” He was looking at his best friend with worried eyes.

Bucky nodded shortly. He understood why this was the right call.

“However, Bucky, you’ll be our eyes and ears,” you got near him, “we’ll be planting micro cameras, courtesy of Sharon, during our stay and you’ll monitor them from here.”

Bucky smiled briefly. He didn’t feel useless anymore, he could actually help someone after all these years destroying people. You knew this meant a lot to Bucky, so you have insisted Steve to let him help.

“Sam, you’ll be Falk Holbein. He’s Austrian, rich, owns a few yachts, and his business is incredibly illegal,” you stated. “Holbein has friends up high in the government so play it cool if they come talking to you about politics.”

“Copy that, y/n.” Sam replied, taking the file you were handing him and studying it more carefully.

“Together with Sharon we’re gonna be Albert and Daeva Kügler, a rich married German couple. They’re suspected of running a drug cartel associated with Holbein,” the Captain proceeded with the explanation of the plan.

You weren’t a hundred percent supportive of Sharon tagging along, but you had to agree nonetheless. The team needed all the help available and she was probably the only one in the agency to support you all. You knew Sam and Bucky would look at you with sympathetic gazes, so you ignored them and began searching for the Küglers’ file.

“Y/n’ll come with us, right?” you heard Sam ask.

“Yes, she will. She’ll be Jenell Schmit, another ridiculously rich woman that has some illegal business going around in Germany with a base in Berlin,” Steve replied. He handed you your file, which you began rereading.

Sharon had appeared an hour later. You were getting ready at that moment, so Steve explained how the mission should go by himself. Not that either of them minded. While they were chatting, you prepared yourself.

Red lips, black smokey eyes, striking eyeliner. Everything was going smoothly with the process. After you finished, you went to your ‘room’ to get changed. As you entered, a long delicate burgundy dress stared at you from its hang. It was so beautiful and so eager to be used.

However, your admiring time was over when you heard hard knocks on the door and Steve’s voice saying: “Y/n, are you ready? We need to leave now.”

“Almost!” you answered. You got dressed rapidly and put on a pair of black heels in only 3 minutes. You stared at yourself at the small mirror hanging from the wall and when you decided you were happy with your appearance, you opened the door.

Everyone was waiting for you outside your 'room’. Bucky, Sam, and specially Steve were looking at you in awe. You looked incredibly beautiful and all three men were well aware. Sharon, on the other hand, looked… jealous? No, that couldn’t be. But it was. She was beautiful too, but there was no match for you in the men’s eyes, which she knew. You had to say, both soldiers were looking good in their black tuxedos.

“Lookin’ good, doll,” Bucky said smirking flirtishly.

“Why, thank you, Barns,” you answered in a fake posh voice.

“May I accompany you to the door, m'lady,” Sam asked offering his arm.

“That is incredibly kind of you, sir,” you answered. When you couldn’t contain the laughter anymore, the four of you exploded in laughter. Sharon, of course, was too busy envying your friendship with the soldiers.

“S-seriously, though, you look great, y/n,” Steve complimented.

“Thanks, Steve. You’re not bad yourself.”

“And what about me? I’m stunning?” Sam joked.

Between laughs, you answered. “You’re absolutely stunning, Sam.“

This mission was going better than you expected and it hadn’t even started yet. Surely, things could get complicated later, but you’d burn that bridge when you got there. When you got to Scheider’s mansion, all four of you were ready. You pretended you didn’t know you knew each other and passed through the front doors with nervously.

"I’ve got eyes on Scheider,” you heard Sam’s voice in the communicator in your ear after walking around for ten minutes trying to find any familiar face. “I’ll plant a camera near him, someone cover me.”

“I’ll go,” you answered.

You went to the living room and walked towards the man. He looked expensive. You needn’t get too close, as the man approached you himself with an easy smile.

“Hey, there, pretty,” Scheider said with a heavy German accent.

“Hi, you’re Mr. Scheider, right?” you faked confusion.

“In the flesh,” he answered grinning. “And call me Herman, please.” Scheider winked at you.

“Oh, my friend’s been talking my ear off about you,” you joked. Scheider laughed, but didn’t interrupt you, so you kept talking. “I don’t think she was wrong about you at all,” you added seductively.

“Good things, I hope,” he answered with the same flirtish tone as yours.

“All good things, Herman.”

“Nice, y/n,” you heard Bucky’s voice in your ear. You could even hear his smirk.

Right after this, Sam announced he had finished placing the micro camera.

“Would you mind getting me a drink?” you asked at the man in front of you.

“Wouldn’t mind at all. When I get back, I’ll want to hear your name, beautiful,” he answered and faded into crowd.

You took this chance to go and look for Zemo. It was hard between all this people. Some came to talk to you about business opportunities, which you accepted kindly.

“I have visual on Zemo,” you said suddenly recognizing his face.

“Hold on, y/n,” Steve said through your communicators. “Where is he?”

“In the living room, surrounded by… escorts,” you answered with a disgusted grimace. “Sam will fit better there. He’s alone so he can bend easily and start a conversation with the bastard.”

“Good idea, y/n,” Steve answered. “Sam, you heard that?”

“Sounds like a plan, guys,” Sam answered. “Y/n, place a micro camera near him when I get there. I want all of this recorded.”

“Copy that.”

You saw Sam come into the room. He blended quite easily and began chatting with Zemo. You looked for a place to put the micro camera and hid it when you found the right one. As you turned around, you heard a familiar voice talking.

“I thought I’d lost you,” Scheider appeared from the blurry crowd with an expensive smile and two martinis.

“My fault. Some people offered me a business deal I couldn’t decline,” you lied accepting the drink he was giving you. “When I came back you weren’t there.”

“I understand that. When business calls, there’s no way of saying no,” Scheider answered, his German accent emphasized in every ‘r’.

You continued talking about business sitting on the bar. The amount of information he was giving you was enormous and you couldn’t feel more motivated. The mission was going smoothly. Besides, the man had his charisma so the conversation wasn’t dull.

“I need to go to the bathroom, Harem,” you said standing up.

The man placed a hand on your waist softly and lowered his head to whisper in your ear. “We’ll finish this, beautiful.”

You stepped back and smirked flirtishly at him.

“Definitely.”

You turned around and headed to the bathroom. It was elegant and isolated from the loud music and the crowd full of possible criminals. You looked at yourself in the mirror and touched up your make-up. You heard a toilet flush and when you turned around, you saw none other than Sharon.

“Hi,” you said nicely. You decided to give her a chance. If she was going to stick with you often, you should at least fake being nice.

She glared back. You shrugged it off and continued with what you were doing.

“You know what, y/n?” Sharon faced you with a raged expression. “You aren’t nearly as perfect as you think you are. You think everyone likes you? Guess what? You’re wrong.”

Your eyes widened in response of the abrupt insults flowing off her tongue. What was going on? “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. You think you’re so pretty in that dress, but it’s not even close. Look at you. Your legs, your waist, that’s no way of wearing such a dress, y/n. And your make-up? Did you smudge it all on purpose? You’re pathetic, really,” Sharon kept on going about your flaws but you weren’t paying attention anymore.

Your breathing started getting more and more difficult and tears were forming up on the edge of your eyes, but your anger was stronger. “Why would you be so mean to me? I get it, I’m your competition or something you invented, right? If this is because of Steve, then you should know he likes you, not me,” you said angrily. He shouldn’t, but he did, you thought.

“You’re so pathetic. I knew there was a reason for Steve not to like you back,” she said stepping menacingly towards you. “You aren’t strong enough to be a part of this team. You aren’t good enough. You’re worthless, y/n.”

That was the last drop. A single tear ran down your cheek and taking it as your queue, you left. You went straight to a small deck in the back of the house. It was deserted, so no one would bother you.

Were you really all those things?

Why did Sharon begin insulting you out of the blue?

Were you really worthless?

All these questions and many more popped in your head. Your mind was running a million miles an hour. Your questions and doubts were interrupted by someone. Steve. He had seen you go there in a hurry and now, he looked at you with a concerned expression.

“Y/n? What happened?”

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #124 - Zootopia

Spoilers below.

Have I seen it before: Yes

Did I like it then: Yes!

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: Yes.

Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: Yes. #412.

Format: Blu-ray

1) From the very start this film is excellent storytelling. The opening scene where young Judy and her classmates clearly establishes the conflict of predator vs. prey and the biases that come from that, the film’s humor and heart, and Judy as a character.

2) My mother is an actuary. My brother is studying to be an actuary. Actuaries don’t do this.

Little Jaguar: “Today I can hunt for tax exemptions. I’m going to be an actuary!”

3) Judy’s parents (Don Lake & Bonnie Hunt) are so funny in such a sad way.

Stu: “Judy, you ever wonder how your mom and me got to be so darn happy?”

Judy: “Nope.”

Stu: “Well, we gave up on our dreams and we settled. Right, Bon?”

Bonnie: “Oh yes, that’s right Stu. We settled hard.”

4) Gideon Grey.

Gideon is a perfect example of how nothing - NOTHING - in this film is superfluous, but I’m actually going to speak on that further into the film.

5) The police academy scene gives wonderful exposition. It sets up the environment and rules of Zootopia’s various ecosystems in a way that feeds into Judy’s conflict and character.

6) Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps.

Goodwin (a massive Disney fan herself) breathes perfect life into Hopps. The best voice over work is when you’re not distracted by the voice actor. When their voice and their heart match with the character so perfectly that you don’t hear - say - Kristen Bell as Anna or Mike Myers as Shrek, you only hear the character’s. Goodwin is able to balance Judy’s massive optimism and heart along with the scenes where Judy has lost those things perfectly. I don’t think anyone else could have voiced Hopps as well as Goodwin.

7) If you want to avoid a slew of bad animal puns, don’t look too hard at Judy’s iPod.

8) “Try Everything” by Shakira.

Written by Sia, Tor Erik Hermansen, and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, the theme song which deserved an Oscar nomination captures Judy’s optimism and struggles perfectly. The song’s lyrics speak of optimism in the face of constant failure, a theme which is very relevant to Judy in the first half of the film. It also provides the perfect backdrop to the visual introduction of Zootopia as Judy enters the city on train.

9) Subtle.

Judy [after Clawhauser calls her “cute”]: “Ooh, ah, you probably didn’t know, but a bunny can call another bunny ‘cute’, but when other animals do it, that’s a little…”

10) This film really runs with the animal puns.

(GIF originally posted by @baawri)

Bogo [turning to an Elephant officer]: “Francine. Happy birthday!”

11) I love the way the filmmakers handled Judy’s office discrimination. She is treated just as a token bunny, someone who’s only there for PR. Except she was top of her class at Zootopia police academy: a difficult feat for anybody, let alone a bunny. But this just feeds into the biases Bogo already has about Judy: she’s not really that good, they just said she was because she’s a bunny. That plays into real life way more than it probably should.

12) Wow, I did not catch how entirely speciesist this line was until now:

Ice Cream Parlor Owner [to Nick]: “Look, you probably can’t read…”

Damn that’s speciesist.

13) Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde.

Remember how I said great voice over work is noted by not realizing you’re listening to a voice over artist? The same can be said of Bateman’s performance of Wilde, 100%. To start, Bateman captures Wilde’s surface level of sly con artists WONDERFULLY well. He’s devilish and charming in the same vein as Danny Ocean or Han Solo, and Bateman expresses this perfectly. But as the film progresses Bateman is also able to show off Nick’s layers. His troubled past, his occasional lack of self-worth and anger at the world. And the honest level never changes. It’s not like Bateman was hired ONLY for the slyness of Nick’s role and had to power through the rest, he’s able to do it all. It’s a great voice over for a great character.

14) The relationship between Nick & Judy is the cornerstone of this film. What I personally like about it is its honesty. There’s no BIG moment when these two meet, it’s a chance encounter which grows to conflict and then budding friendship so organically you don’t even know it’s happening.

15) There is nothing even remotely superfluous in this film. Nick makes a comment about how he’s been running his popsicle con his whole life and that will come back to bite him in the butt later.

16) This pig is played by Josh Dallas, Ginnifer Goodwin’s onscreen partner in “Once Upon a Time” and real life husband.

17) The chase through Zootopia is an incredible amount of fun, especially when Judy and Duke get to Little Rodentia. The filmmakers are able to play with their concept in a visual entertaining and imaginative way, which in turn keeps us as the audience wrapped up in the world they’ve established.

Note: I’m going to take about Alan Tudyk as Duke later in the film, at a very specific moment.

18) Again, there is nothing superfluous in this film (a note I’m going to be making a lot):

Judy [after saving Mr. Big’s daughter]: “Love your hair.”

Mr. Big’s Daughter: “Aww, thank you!”

It is this little encounter (and, you know, the fact that Judy saved her life) that saves Judy & Nick from getting “iced” by Mr. Big later in the film.

19) Again, nothing superfluous in the film. As the “non-onions” that Duke stole end up being very important later on.

20) Disney is at its bets when it pokes fun at itself.

Bogo: “Life isn’t some cartoon musical where you sing a little musical and your insipid dreams MAGICALLY COME TRUE! So let it go.”

21) Can we all just take a moment to appreciate Nick’s face after Judy says she’ll arrest him for, “felony tax evasion,” after he brags to her about how he’s been running this con since he was a kid and how much money he makes?

(GIF originally posted by @animations-daily)

22) Again, with the idea that nothing in this film is superfluous: Judy’s recording pen becomes very important as the movie goes on.

23) Only Tommy Chong could play this character.

(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)

Like there’s a chance he’s not even reading from a script, they just had Tommy Chong come in and told him what the movie was about and he just started talking.

24) This is the funniest part of the whole film, in my opinion.

The entire DMV scene plays well not only with the concept established by the film of an animal society in a way which is funny on its own, but the continuing conflict of Judy’s eagerness, Flash’s slowness, and Nick’s desire to throw a monkey wrench into the whole thing leads to amazing comedy.

25) Did you know Kristen Bell is in this film?

Bell landed the role not only because of her working with Disney on Frozen, but also because she is a noteworthy sloth enthusiast (as seen on “Ellen”).

26) It is nice to see Nick freak out when he realizes he and Judy are in Mr. Big’s limo, as it shows us a part of him we haven’t gotten to look at much in the film so far.

27) Maurice LaMarche as Mr. Big.

(GIF originally posted by @rocktheholygrail)

LaMarche is a noted voice over actor known primarily for his roles as Brain on “Pinky & The Brain”, various characters including Calculon on “Futurama”, and Mr. Freeze in the Batman Arkham series of video games. Here, we get to hear the veteran voice over artist do his best high pitched Brando impression.

28) This film has its fair share of nice surprises, details and twists which keeps you on your toes. The earliest of these is the revelation that the missing mammal Judy & Nick are looking for - Mr. Otterton - was in fact the one who attacked the limo driver (and not that he was the one attacked, as originally perceived).

29) This scene gives me life.

Bogo [after Judy’s witness disappears]: Two days to find the otter, or you quit. That was the deal. [Holding out hand] Badge.

Judy: But sir, we…

Bogo: Badge!

[Judy starts to turn in her badge]

Nick: Uh… no.

Chief Bogo: What did you say, fox?

Nick Wilde: Sorry, what I said was… NO! She will not be giving you that badge.[Bogo flinches] Look, you gave her a… a… a clown vest and a three wheel joke mobile and two days to solve a case you guys haven’t cracked in two weeks? Yeah, no wonder she needed to get help from a fox. None of you guys were gonna help her, were you? [Bogo starts to speak but Nick cuts him off] Here’s the thing, chief. You gave her the 48 hours, so technically we still have… 10 left, to find our Mr. Otterton. And that’s exactly what we’re gonna do. So, if you’ll excuse us, we have a very big lead to follow and a case to crack. Good day.

30) And then there’s this…

I saw this film twice in theaters and both times I was tearing up during Nick’s backstory. Anyone who has ever been bullied as a kid for being different will relate at least a little bit to what Nick went through. And it is this scene when Nick is at his most honesty with Judy, when they become pretty good friends and form a trust with each other.

31) NOTHING IN THIS FILM IS SUPERFLUOUS!!!! NOT EVEN A BLINK OR YOU’LL MISS IT STICKY NOTE ON BELLWETHER’S DESK!!!!

32) I did not think a Disney movie would make me jump like this (stop at 2:11).

33) This is incredibly rare for me, as someone who sees more than 60 films in theaters a year, but after Nick & Judy found the missing mammals and had the mayor arrested I had absolutely NO idea where the film was going after that. At all. I love it!

34) Nick’s face when Judy links the savage animals to being a predator…

(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)

35) I had a film student criticize this film not based on the merits of its story or character’s or anything, but because they didn’t understand the metaphor. He noted that it’s not a clean comparison between white people and minorities and that’s exactly the point. This film is not about the people in power vs the people who aren’t, because who’s in power? The mayor may be a lion but the most biased character in the film - Chief Bogo - is prey. Bias goes all around and it can infect anybody, no matter what you think. Even Judy, for all her merits, is biased. She carries around fox repellent all the time and even has this line:

Judy: “It’s not like a bunny can go savage.”

That’s what I love about this film. It’s universal. It’s not about one real life society, it is about all societies everywhere and how bias can infect them and taint them and it’s up to us to work against that.

36) Fun fact: I had no idea otters were predators before seeing this film.

37) Gideon Grey returns.

If only all childhood bullies were like that, but again it gets to my oft-repeated point that nothing in this film is superfluous. Gideon could have easily been the one note bully from Judy’s youth who gave her the motivation to prove him wrong, but he comes back 15 years later in the most perfect way. She sees that people can change and that people who are good now are not always good (Gideon when he was younger, Judy when she was biased). It is a really important moment for her that was established all the way in the first ten minutes of this movie. I love that.

38) Judy’s apology to Nick and the way he handles it is something I truly love about this movie and their friendship as a whole.

And then I really love the little joke at the end about Judy trying to get to the pen and can’t help but wonder: was that written in the script? Was it Jason Bateman’s improv that made it into the film? It’s just so natural I must know!

39) Okay, I think this is the last time I will give this note, BUT NOTHING IN THIS MOVIE IS SUPERFLUOUS!!! This is most apparent to me when Nick does a little thing like expressing how much he likes the berries on Judy’s farm and it becomes so important to the plot latter when they switched out those berries with the Night Howlers in Bellwether’s dart gun.

40) THE BOOTLEG MOVIES!!!!

(GIFs originally posted by @bridgetjones)

41) And it’s followed up by this!

Both characters are voiced by Alan Tudyk. Because Disney just can’t let that one slide, can they? I love it.

42) Same Duke. Same.

(GIFs originally posted by @baawri)

43) The sticky note on Bellwether’s phone earlier was for Doug, the guy who mixes the night howler drug that makes animals go savage (this is the same drug who’s key ingredient was mixed from the non-onions Duke stole earlier in the film, FOR Doug).

44) At one point Doug - who is dressed in a yellow radiation suit and makes drugs for a living - lets his client know that “Woolter and Jesse” have arrived.

And yes, they did that on purpose.

45) The entire subway chase sequence is really great, because it is based heavily on the idea of action = consequence. A ram is running at the door, he gets through and hits another ram. The train goes too fast into a turn, it tips over and Judy/Nick are up a creek. It all works very nicely

46) Honestly, I didn’t figure out Bellwether was the bad guy until just before it was revealed the first time I saw this.

47) Bellwether’s line about, “Fear ALWAYS works!” to keep the people in check should not be as relevant in 2017 as it is.

48) Okay, one thing I need to know: Bellwether is in jail, Mayor Lionheart is in jail, and Chief Bogo is still the police chief…SO WHO’S MAYOR NOW!?!?!?

49) I know this film was pretty much a buddy cop movie, but I would be totally fine with a buddy cop movie where Nick is actually a cop.

Lethal Weapon where Nick is Mel Gibson and Judy is…Danny Glover? Okay, that comparison doesn’t really work, but you get me!

50) And of course…

I honestly think Zootopia may be a perfectly written film, and that is not something I say lightly. I made it clear above how I find nothing in the film superfluous, which is an incredible feat I think. And they did it in a way that was never boring, with entertaining characters, an intriguing mystery, and a fun world. Zootopia may be my favorite Disney animated feature film, and it’s definitely my favorite of the “Modern Era” we’re in now (The Princess and the Frog - Present). Just a great, great, great film which deserved its Best Animated Picture win at the Oscars. A true treat all around.

LEO

Give us a birthday roar, Leo! Don’t be afraid of attracting a little attention – this is YOUR month, and you’re already turning heads! Your vibe, aura, energy, whatever you want to call it – it’s off the charts and you’re finding that people are increasingly attracted to your outgoing, vibrant spirit. Put that energy to good use to dive headfirst into those passion projects you’ve been toying with for the past few months! If birthdays are good for anything, they’re for reminding us of how far we’ve come, and how far we have yet to go. Reflect on what you’ve accomplished, and celebrate it! But don’t stop there. You’ve been granted another year, so isn’t it time to make the most of it? That said, the time has come to give yourself a little bit more care and attention. I know this doesn’t come easily to you; you tend to prefer to give rather than take, and feel more comfortable putting others before yourself. Admirable, to be sure, but there are times you need to listen to your intuition, make yourself a priority. You may find yourself in situations where a choice must be made: your happiness, or someone else’s? Draw your inspiration from your lucky book this month, an incredible tale of family ties, and the complications that arise when love is pitted against loyalty. When are our sacrifices worth it? Are some things more important than family, than love? When your allegiances are tested, what holds true? Ultimately, Leo, the choice is always up to you – and you have another year of wisdom and experience under your belt. Draw from that, and then do your best not to look back.

LUCKY BOOK: Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie

VIRGO

It’s August, Virgo! Your birthday looms ever closer in the horizon, and you know what that means: time for some deep cleaning. What have you attracted in the past year that you know (perhaps only very deep down) it’s time to let go of? What has been dragging you down and stopping you from living your best life? Whatever those things are, this is your time to attack them with a bottle of your most high-powered cleaning spray and the coarsest washrag you own. You know better than anyone, Virgo, the freedom and joy in scrubbing at some hard-packed grit, and clearing it away to reveal the gleaming surface underneath. Half-hearted commitments, projects that have long soured, fake friendships – these are all areas you can tackle! It can be very difficult, sometimes almost unbearably so, to let go of the old way of seeing or doing things, especially if you’ve become accustomed to certain negative ideas or people to the point that they feel like home, like normal. But that’s no reason to continue clinging to them once you’ve seen the light. The 14-year-old heroine of your lucky book this month learns this lesson in some of most harrowing ways, but her journey to freedom is one you won’t soon forget. Take heart, Virgo, and remember that you are ultimately the master of your own fate. You hold the power – and the Windex!

LUCKY BOOK: My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent

LIBRA

It’s August, Libra, and rather than succumb to the Sunday blues (it is the Sunday of the calendar year, after all), you’re continuing the summer fun at full throttle. Your current happy place is within a large crowd lately, and lucky for you, we’re still in the heart of music festival season. But there may be more to it than just posing for the street fashion photographers at Lollapalooza and AfroPunk: you genuinely enjoy the sheer excitement and co-mingling of ideas that bubbles from being among a group of creative individuals. Not only are your friends your lifeline this month, offering you constant emotional support and accompanying you on hilarious adventures you can only share on your private blog, but even the strangers you meet may spark some new avenues of creativity you’ve never explored. Follow this impulse to profit from the collective; keep seeking new activities and areas where you can expand. You’re drawing from the most ancient instinct of living things: the compulsion to not only grow, but to change. Each new experience and memory is helping you develop into the person you’re supposed to become, a person markedly different from who you were ten years ago, twenty minutes ago, six months ago. So is it any wonder that your lucky book this month is a fascinating study of the way we think about evolutionary biology? The most minute quirks of DNA mutation can influence an entire species for generations – pathways that emerge from seemingly nowhere that take life to the completely unexpected places. Every action, every decision you make has an undeniable reverb effect that you may or may not ever discover, so come on, Libra. Let’s see what you’ve got up your sleeve next – and don’t skimp on the silly group photos, either.

SCORPIO

“I got my mind on my money and my money on my mind.” Wise words from the late great Notorious B.I.G., and your mantra for this month, Scorpio! You’re all about that paper in August: you’ve been working hard, building your network, taking professional risks, and now, getting ready to reap the rewards. What form it will take remains to be seen, so don’t count any unhatched chickens. But one thing is clear: your ambition is going to take you far. Perhaps even history books far. Who knows? But while your career continues to soar to meteoric heights, don’t forget about the people who helped you get there: your friends. Female friendships in particular are going to be crucial this month. After all, you can only work but so much, and an unfortunate side effect of putting in major hours at the office is missing out on some quality time with your chosen family. So whenever you can, be sure to make time for some much-needed gossip fests or movie marathons. You need a counterbalance to the stress of the job, and reveling in the love and appreciation of your besties is a surefire way to not lose your mind during this exciting, but admittedly draining time. And who better to draw comfort from, than your fiercest supporters? Of course, if you’re looking for another source of encouragement, maybe the more literary kind, your lucky book this month is a testament to what the human mind can achieve. Not only that, but the myriad effects that innovation that have on society as a whole. From artificial intelligence, to the barcode, to IKEA’s Billy bookcase, there is a backstory to every object you take for granted, and many of them will surprise you. So, Scorpio, now we have to know…what will your backstory be? How will you make your mark on history?

LUCKY BOOK: Fifty Inventions That Shaped the Modern Economy by Tim Harford

SAGITTARIUS

The road goes ever on and on, Sagittarius, and this is your month to experience it firsthand! That stirring you’ve been feeling to get out and explore? Now is when you give in. And let’s be clear: this doesn’t mean you should max out your credit card and fly to the opposite end of the globe, swathing yourself in scratchy fabrics and embarking on a life-threatening quest. It is completely up to you (and your budget) where to go, how to get there, what do to there, and how long to stay. Want to spend a weekend in Nantucket? Wonderful! Want to spend a month in your childhood home? Fantastic! Wherever you go, there you are, so use this time of separation from your usual to become even more in tune with yourself and any spiritual, mental, psychological scores you need to settle. Don’t underestimate the benefits of retreating from the typical trappings of your usual life; even if you don’t venture as far as you’d like to this time, take the time to sit still. Look around. Breathe. Say hello to a stranger. If your journey has taken you abroad, try to learn a few sentences in the local language. And most importantly, find a quiet place and comfy chair to disappear into your lucky book this month: the story of a young boy who has also left his home, but (hopefully) for very different reasons. Chased by dark forces, he is forced to travel across a hot, empty desert plain – completely alone, until he encounters an old goatherd. Their paths thus intertwined, they must learn the rules of this harsh new country together. A thrilling vacation read, cautionary tale, humbling parable – let this searing story be whatever you need it to be, while you bask in the unknown of your own brand new corner of the world.

LUCKY BOOK: Out in the Open by Jesús Carrasco

CAPRICORN

Is it warm in here, or is it just me? Oh, wait – no, it’s just YOU. Cap, there’s really no other way to put it: you’re hot this month, and if no one has begun shooting you some furtive glances, they’re coming. This is your month for smooth seduction, and there’s absolutely no shame in that! Whether it’s an old flame or a new spark, the romantic interludes will be robust and who knows, may lead to something more. Keep your options open, and do yourself a favor? Save the spicy details for your journal. Active as your group text might be, you don’t need to share every encounter with four of your closest friends, not unless you enjoy the nonstop interrogation that is sure to follow! Sometimes keeping some secrets to yourself can make the most benign affair even more exciting, and after all, don’t you deserve some excitement? That said, Cap, don’t completely lose your head in the whirlwind of these new flings – keep one eye on your finances, too! Finding a much lower bank balance than expected is a surefire way to bring an ecstatic high to a crashing low, so be proactive and maybe decline some of the more extravagant date invitations…unless the other party is treating, of course! Your lucky book this month is a mesmerizing account of a young girl’s mission to learn her mother and grandmother’s history – a winding journey through truths and half-truths, memories of love, abandonment, betrayal, and new beginnings – to, in turn, better understand herself. It’s a beautiful, moving testament to the fleeting nature of life, and the lessons we learn in youth that become invaluable to the generations to come. So go ahead, have some fun this month. Hit it while it’s hot.

LUCKY BOOK: I’m Supposed to Protect You from All This by Nadja Spiegelman

AQUARIUS

Aquarius, Aquarius, Aquarius. You’ve been living large and in charge all summer, and it looks incredibly good on you. It seems like you’ve got it all figured out: job, home, friendships, fitness – you name it, you’ve conquered it. Well, okay, there’s one area that can use some development. You’ve been so focused on getting yourself in order over the past few weeks (or perhaps months!) that you’ve allowed your independence to push away a potential special someone. Maybe someone came to mind just now, maybe not. But this is the month to open up that part of your heart once more: even if you don’t feel ready to enter into anything serious, consider putting some time and effort towards building or re-building something a person who gets you. Sometimes you just need a person to keep you in check, to support your more wacky ideas, to hold your hands before you take major risk. Knowing that someone you care about always has your back can be incredibly freeing – not necessarily limiting or confining, as you may have been led to believe. As long as the lines of communication are open, the cards are on the table, and you’re both open to each others’ needs, there is no reason that a healthy, successful life cannot include someone you can call a partner – with as many or as few stipulations or boundaries as you both desire. Your lucky book this month is a spellbinding and unforgettable collection of short stories that will shed a brand new and sometimes discomfiting light on the nature of our relationships, whether romantic, familial, or otherwise. Sometimes entering a world gone slightly topsy-turvy can help us better appreciate our own – and avoid the mistakes of the characters we come to know and love, even in the space of a few pages.

LUCKY BOOK: What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky by Lesley Nneka Arimah

PISCES

Rise and shine, Pisces! This month, you’re feeling and looking fantastic – muscles tightening, blood flowing, skin glowing! No more late nights squinting at your phone; you’re tucking in early to avoid being sluggish the next morning. Midday bag of chips? Not for you – a brisk walk to get a fresh smoothie has become your new habit. Between your improved diet and consistent gym attendance, you’re right on track to achieve the sort of health goals you once found nearly impossible. And it’s a good thing too, considering how things have picked up at work! You need all your wits about you as you go through these hectic days and late nights, so keep up the good work. We do only get one body, after all, and it’s always in your best interests to keep it healthy and happy. And while we know work is pretty intense right now, you know what they saw about all work and no play, right? Even though it may seem wrong to inject some fun into such a go-go-go month, you need to let your hair down once in awhile and give yourself some time to relax and let loose. So that date you’ve been putting off? Just say yes! Enjoy the attention, show off all that exercise you’ve been doing! If you’re looking for some romantic ideas, might we suggest a homemade dinner date for two? You may be committed to new fit lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean all of your meals should be bland and oat-filled all the time. Your lucky book this month is sure to give you some delicious inspiration for some flavorful meals, as well as general tips and tricks for adding a special touch to your cooking, whether the recipe comes out of a book or not. Bon appetit!

LUCKY BOOK: The Art of Flavor by Daniel Patterson and Mandy Aftel

ARIES

Beautiful Aries! This month is YOUR TIME. Your confidence is through the roof right now – or if it isn’t it should be! You’re turning heads left and right, friends and acquaintances alike are clamoring for your attention, and the dating prospects aren’t looking too shabby either! Basically, you’re totally owning it this month, and we couldn’t be more happy for you. As summer winds to a close, take full advantage of these final few weeks: enjoy a vacation day or two, bask in the sunshine, sip some frozé with a group of friends at noon. In other words, live!!! Enjoy it; life is fleeting anyway! Of course, a word of caution: no matter how amazing you look and feel, using the world as your red carpet can have its drawbacks. Keep a tight grip on your wallet, and be careful of what you post on social media. Money is not everlasting, but that regrettable photo from 4 AM absolutely is! Leave the tabloid-worthy blunders to the celebrities, and recognize when it’s time to leave the party. Speaking of, your lucky book this month will be right up your alley: a whip-smart, hilarious deep dive into the world of celebrity culture, what feeds our obsession, and what effect internet fame has on our culture at large. Walk like the street is your red carpet – and then enjoy cozying up in bed with this book, comforted by the fact that there isn’t paparazzi just outside your door.

LUCKY BOOK: The Stars in Our Eyes by Julie Klam

TAURUS

Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for being a homebody, Taurus. This month, you’re really into the warmth and comfort (or should we say air conditioning and comfort?) that comes from being safely ensconced at home, surrounded by your books, blankets, and favorite snacks. Maybe you’re finally get around to that deep cleaning you’ve been saying you’d undertake since the beginning of May, or there’s a room that’s just dying for a fresh coat of bright new paint. Or maybe the time has come to say farewell to your current place entirely, and try to find some digs. However you slice it, your priority this month is taking care of your sacred space, and reevaluating what the significance of that space means for you. It is a place of solitude and meditation, where you can escape the endless grind of the outside world? Is it a fortress for you and your closest loved one, where you can all be your unapologetic selves? Is it simply a place of refuge, where you can rest assured that in this tiny corner of the universe, you are safe, independent, and in control? You may find that you have much in common with the protagonist of your lucky book this month, a fiercely opinionated young woman who is on a quest to find a place she can rely on as home. Trapped in that infuriating liminal space between cultures, between countries, and does her best to carve for herself, everywhere she goes, a place that rests entirely under her control, a place where she can feel, even in miniature, that she is in a safe, familiar place. It’s a stunning tale that will put into sharp perspective one of the most pressing human rights issues of our time – pick it up whenever you feel yourself getting a little bit too serious about paint swatches.

GEMINI

Gemini, what’s good? You haven’t had the best few weeks, but it’s a month, a new day, and life is going to have to come a little harder than that to keep you down. Luckily, this month you’re all about that extra support: partnerships and close friendships are where you’ll thrive, and it won’t feel too crowded, or like a betrayal of your own independence – we promise. The key is to make sure the people you choose to surround yourself with add a special something that you wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere. Who makes you feel like your best self? Your most capable self? Your most ambitious self? Who lights that creative fire? Understand that while self-sufficiency is important, and your reliance on your own wisdom and wits is one of your best attributes, it can never hurt to solicit input and guidance from someone who can push you to aim even higher, and vice versa! So put yourself out there, be proactive. You can’t expect everything to come to you. Your lucky book this month is a short, trippy examination of race and class that follows a most unusual character in her quest for authenticity. Like you, she wonders who she really is, who she wants to be, and how – or who – can help her become that person? While you will undoubtedly avoid some of the more absurd situation she finds herself in, there is much to learn from her internal dialogue as she fumbles for ‘realness.’ Find your person (or people!), Gemini, but don’t lose sight of yourself in the process. You’re smarter and more resourceful than you know. Remember that!

CANCER

Up and at'em, Cancer! You’ve had a leisurely summer, laying back and enjoying the ocean breeze, marathoning your summer shows and sampling mimosas at every brunch spot in town. We don’t begrudge you living the unbothered life to the fullest, but alas, it truly isn’t a party if it happens every night. And unfortunately, it’s time for the party to end – for the time being. But you were sort of ready to kick it back into high gear anyway, weren’t you? You have a bit too much active energy to spend the rest of the summer whiling away the hours fruitlessly. This doesn’t mean you should throw all of your effort into the first opportunity that presents itself: be forward-thinking, but strategic. Know what you want, and then go after it. Get your feet wet at a few mixers and networking events so you can get some inside scoop on what’s for grabs, who to know, where to show up and show out. So go on, have at it! Dust off that resume, iron that button down. It’s time to start getting yourself back into the game. We understand that the transition back to the real world may be jarring, but you’re not a delicate flower; you can take a bit of unease and horror in your downtime literature. Your lucky book this month is a haunting short story collection that will raise the hair on your arms in the very best way. Both love story and cautionary way, it’s the absolute best selection for this month, when you need to be kept on your toes – although we highly recommend not saving this one to read right before bed.

LUCKY BOOK: Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin

Snow Days - Part 1

Genre: fluff/angst, highschool!au

Pairing: reader/jungkook

Length: 3.2k

Summary: Although you’d been warned about the snowstorm that would affect your area, you decided to go to school anyway. Several hours later, you were trapped in the library, the weather too severe to go outside. Fortunately, you had your headphones so you could listen to your favourite artist: a boy who went by the name JK. Unfortunately, you were stuck with the new transfer student, Jungkook, who was a right pain in the ass.

A/N: if you’ve read my other stuff, you might be thinking ‘another school au???’ and all I can say is yes I’m totally not sorry they’re loads of fun to write
also I base all of them off the korean high school that I went to not officially but that’s another story so obviously they do things very differently to american high schools, so hopefully it still feels realistic for you!! especially as I have no idea what american high schools are like
p.s. the title is for a really lame joke i’ll make later

01 02 03 04 05 06 07

The cold air blew up your shirt as you waited for the bus, sending a shudder up and down your spine. You bounced a little on your toes, hoping the movement would keep the blood flowing as your breath rose in clouds. The snow that covered the ground was old, but news stations everywhere had been forecasting heavy snow on the way, so you decided to brave the public transport while it was still running.

The tip of your nose stung slightly as you sniffed, but you didn’t want to take your hands out of your pockets to blow it. You’d been trying to keep in as much heat as possible since you left the house, so you continued to sniff miserably until the bus arrived. Clambering on, you made sure to sit next to one of the heaters at the side, the metal way too hot to rest against for long period of time, but you were willing to burn off your skin at that point. It’d been a harsh winter, and you were sick of the cold.

Finally warming up as the bus trundled down the road in the direction of your school, you eventually blew your nose and took out your phone to put some music on. Over the winter break, a music app called Quaver had grown in popularity, and become the best source for musicians to get out their music. Swept up in the hype, you downloaded the app and went searching for soft ballads to help you sleep through the sounds of winds and storms, and you’d come across a singer called JK. His voice was soft yet mystical, and every time you closed your eyes you could picture yourself standing next to a frozen lake with a warm fire at your feet. It was enchanting. You hadn’t stopped listening to him since.

American Gods 1x04: There’s Something About Laura

I was looking at this title and thinking it could equally apply to the Twin Peaks regroups I will be doing, but unlike the vague sense of existential angst I feel when watching that show, American Gods brings me nothing but joy. This show continues to improve and surprise with every episode, and this weeks dive into the life and times of Laura Moon was the best outing so far. Last week I talked about how successful this show has been in it’s ability to tell stories that are able to stand on their own, a particularly difficult feat for a show that also boasts an extensive fantasy universe. This episode was the perfect example of the strength of American Gods storytelling. While Laura’s story is another thread in the richer tapestry of the show, this episode also worked on it’s own simply as a story about a woman struggling to find meaning in her life. This episode also marked the first real divergence in terms of faithfulness to the source material as well, and it’s a testament to how well the show has been able to grasp Gaiman’s original vision that this episode felt seamless. The first three episodes have been almost rote in their following of the original novel’s first act and the major events therein. But Laura, although important to the larger plot, is a character that is never really flushed out in a meaningful way in the novel. The show’s choice to spotlight her in an episode highlights one of my favorite things about Bryan Fuller as a show runner which are his efforts to expand/create roles for women and POC (most notably in Hannibal).

In episode four we jump back in time (many years) to follow Laura’s life from the time she first met future husband and protagonist Shadow, to the the surprise reunion with him that ended episode 3. Laura is a complex character, and there are many potential pitfalls in her portrayal. Up until this point all we really know about Laura is via other people’s perceptions of her. To Shadow she was a perfect wife, beautiful and serene. To Audrey (Betty Gilpin), Laura was a cheating whore. We know Shadow loved her, and that she had betrayed that love by having an affair with his best friend Robbie (Dane Cook), an affair that would lead to both adulterers untimely deaths. It would be easy to make Laura a villain, she did after all break the heart of the handsome hero we have spent three prior hours getting to love. Conversely it would be just as easy to make her overly sympathetic, someone to be pitied or condescended to. But to Fuller, Green, and Emily Browning’s credit, Laura falls into neither trap. She is simply an unhappy person who does not ask for or need your deeper understanding. As she tells Anubis, “I lived my life, good and bad, definitely not light as a feather.”

In a story that is about celebrating the power and possibility of belief, Laura is a character who (at least in life) believed in nothing outside of what she could see. She struggled with finding contentment in her life, even when on paper she should have been happy, and she often sought dangerous alternatives in an effort to feel emotional connection. As someone who often struggles with depressive thoughts, Laura’s struggles were all too familiar. Although she loved Shadow, she was not able to pin her happiness on him the way he had on her. No matter her feelings, life was never going to be more than the reality of living.

So being transported to a magical afterlife after her violent death comes as somewhat of a shock to Laura. When the curtain is pulled back revealing that there WAS something more to life all the time, and Laura will still be receiving only the darkness she expected, she can’t help but feel cheated. Luckily Shadow tries to save her from herself one last time and throws Mad Sweeney’s lucky coin into her grave returning her earthly soul back into what’s left of her body. Zombie Laura now perceives Shadow as a bright beacon of light against an otherwise colorless world, and she resolutely sets out to help him in any way she can, now finally able to return the consuming and singular love he felt for her all these years. Who needs true love’s kiss when you can have true love’s Droog massacre. In a revisit to the lynching scene from episode one, we now see it was Zombie Laura who cut down Shadow and dispatched of his attackers in SPECTACULAR fashion. You go zombie girl, you punch out that guys skeleton.

However during all that ass kicking Laura’s arm is torn off (despite her super strength, she is still just a corpse), and she pragmatically attempts to fix it via her friend Audrey’s scrapbooking room. I would like to take this moment to talk about the performances in this episode. American Gods has boasted great acting, but this episode had some standouts and a real MVP. I’ll start by confessing that I have never been a real fan of Emily Browning or Dane Cook. I found the former pretty but bland, and the latter deeply unlikable in every possible way. As meathead adulterer Robbie, Cook exceeded my expectations by playing him with a surprising vulnerability instead as a stereotypical asshole bro. And I will concede with Browning the roles she has played previous as a “pretty girl” often do not hold much in the way of material. But I was also pleasantly surprised by her as well, as discussed earlier Laura is a difficult character and Browning clearly grasps her complexities. She is putting in the work and (theme of American Gods) really going for it, which I always respect. I am looking forward to seeing where she will take Laura, especially as the character sets off into uncharted waters.

That being said the standout performance of this episode was unquestionably Betty Gilpin’s Audrey. Holy shit. Gilpin’s performance of  Audrey, a widow grieving both her best friend and husband while wrestling with their combined betrayal, and then discovering said friend as a zombie in her house… is just beyond. Even though her previously described situation is completely ludicrous, Audrey’s pain remains tangible and serves to ground scenes that could have easily spiraled into lunacy. But even though Gilpin is able to keep Audrey’s sadness and anger central, she is also poignantly funny. I don’t know about y'all but I will be yelling “Get out of my house you zombie whore,” at friends and family for years to come. The scene in Audrey’s bathroom where Laura attempts to reconcile the relationship she may have irreparably destroyed with her best friend, while also passing embalming fluid through every orifice and being, you know, a zombie, is one of the best scenes I have ever seen on television. It is a female friendship that is pitch perfect in terms of complexity, pain and love. It is also a woman dealing with a shitting zombie cheater in her house. To sum up, if this show just turned into an Audrey/Laura road trip that would be a-okay with me.

So Laura is picked up by Ibis and Anubis, or Mr Jacquel and Mr. Ibis if ya nasty, and brought back to their funeral parlor. Ibis is a character we have seen briefly penning the Coming to America sections, and is also an old god by way of Egyptian mythology. You also may have noticed they have a cat ;). The two Egyptian gods patch up Laura properly, although she is still a corpse prone to decomposition and loss of limb, and she sets back out in pursuit of Shadow, the now literal light of her life. We then meet back up with the ending of the previous episode, with Shadow being brought face to face with his undead bride.

What could happen next week!!! I don’t know, but I am DYING to find out. Get it? Zombie joke. What if I’ve been a zombie this whole time? You don’t know I’m not. Okay I haven’t eaten in a while. Love ya.

XO MD

We will be in this flirty/sarcastic friendship where we’re constantly challenging each other. So we kiss. Lot’s of fluff please, I’m a hopeless romantic haha. Thanks! Xx”

The recent and more frequent demon attacks had everyone in the Institute on high alert. Training didn’t feel as carefree as before and you knew you had to be your best if you wanted a chance of surviving your increasingly more dangerous missions.

“Hey, loser. Nice to actually see you break a sweat here.” Jace stood in the entrance of the room arms crossed and smirking.

You put your sword down and walked towards him wiping a hand across your sweaty forehead.

“Very funny,” you got close to him and leant up close lips grazing the side of his ear, “I bet you could make me break a sweat in another way”. You stepped away winking and left Jace standing alone looking after you.

Escape: the Bree years

Dedicating this chapter to @thescarlettpeacock who, with her photos and friendship, helped define this storyline.  She’s a talented writer, and a joy to talk to.  Thank you, Scarlett!)

She walked into the National Museum of Scotland with a three month old Bree strapped in her baby carrier.  It was a cold morning in March, and Claire was out for her daily walk.

The flat felt like a prison lately.

Every day she walked a different route trying to clear her head.  She loved being a mother, but she missed being a doctor.  Somehow that felt traitorous.  The war inside her head was ongoing.  She found that being outside helped.  It also helped to get her body stronger.

Now if only I could find a way to get my mind stronger.  Claire pushed away that dark thought.

Some days she walked to Edinburgh Castle.  The first time she stood there she cried.  Being at the top of the city gave a visual to her feelings.  The loneliness and isolation, the sheer feeling of being overwhelmed was all there in front of her.  The vastness of the city at her feet, with its twists and turns, its unknowns and dark corners.  The view mirrored her mind, and that feeling of being so alone, and responsible for a child.  She had no idea what it meant to be a good mum. She hadn’t a clue if she was doing everything well, or right.  The city spread out like a maze, a clear metaphor for parenting.  Should she make this choice, or another?  Lead Bree this way, or that?  How would she know what was right for her daughter?

The conflict was never-ending.

Today she sat in the Museum’s Grand Gallery, the glass ceiling above her trying its best to brighten the Atrium from the dull grey light.  She rested her head against the wall and looked up.  Scotland’s weather mirrored her mood. Everything in her life seemed grey.  Food seemed bland.  Her desires were banked.  Everything was such an effort.  So, she tried to combat her listlessness with exercise.

Claire timed her walks with Bree’s schedule and ended up places where she could discreetly nurse her.  A bench in the corner of the gallery quickly became one of her favourite places.  Brianna  was growing so fast, all rolls, double chins, and bright blue eyes.  This was the only source of Claire’s joy, her daily delight.  Most days it felt like Bree was her only reason for getting up in the morning.

That’s what scared her.

Claire tried not to cry with gratitude every time she looked at the baby.  Brianna was alive, and strong, and had the sweetest smile.

Plus, she adored her Daddy.

Claire wished she felt the same.

She also wasn’t prepared for the sheer drudgery of early motherhood.  The clutter, laundry, nappie changes, and feedings.  My God, the feedings!  Claire had never sat down so much in her life.  It drove her crazy to have to sit while looking around at everything she had to do.  Trying to keep everything clean, and picked up was becoming a worry.  Everywhere she looked she saw a task, be it folding clothes, cleaning, or putting things away.  Just the thought of Bree finding something to put in her mouth and choke had Claire scrubbing floors at 5:00 in the morning, and vacuuming around the clock.

Jamie thought she was being ridiculous.  While he never said so, in many ways he wasn’t as careful as she’d asked him to be.  In her corner, discretely draped by a baby blanket she thought of Jamie. He’d gone back to work eventually, and when he got home all he wanted to do was spend time with Bree.

The first time he dangled his keys in front of her and the baby tried to put them in her mouth, Claire lost it.  She felt bad afterwards for what she’d said to him, but it made her mad that he seemed to have no common sense on the matter. She was a doctor for God’s sake.  She had explained the dangers.

Claire peeked under the blanket to check on Bree.  The little monkey let go, and looked up at Claire with a sweet, milky smile.  Claire had to laugh.  She really was a delight.  Her only real peace came when they were together.  Mother and daughter.

Claire shoved down the thoughts that came to the forefront of her mind so often these days.  Thoughts of how it would be so much simpler if it were just her and Bree.

“Sunday for dinner, then?”  Jenny said, poking her head into Jamie’s office for a quick word.

“I’ll let ye know,” Jamie said, looking up briefly.  He gave his sister a strained smile.

“Jamie,” Jenny stopped, and filled the doorway.  “What’s wrong, brother?”

Jenny crossed her arms over her chest.  He’s hiding something.

“Nothing.  Deadlines.”

Maybe.  That could be it.  “Can I see what ye have so far?”

Jamie straightened from his drafting table, and blew out a long breath.  Finally he nodded, and waggled his fingers to wave her in.  He held up his MacBook to show her what he had completed.  Jenny was impressed.  She smiled as she held it up.

“Jamie, these are beautiful!”

“Aye. They’ll do.”  Fraser Distillery was coming out with a new Blended Scotch Whisky, and Jamie was designing everything from the shape of the bottle, to the label and packaging.

“Here,” he said, and took the MacBook back.  He opened up a new file, and handed it back to Jenny.  Her face softened at the drawings.  Bree asleep.  A sketch of her tiny shell of an ear.  Her little hand curled up on a blanket.

If there was one thing she knew about her brother it was that he drew in times of great stress.  The sheer number of drawings had her concerned.  She handed Jamie back the computer.  He looked sheepish and shy, but proud at the same time.  “Are ye happy, brother?”

Jamie nodded, then shrugged.  He wouldn’t meet her eyes.  “It’s hard, Jenny.”

“Oh, aye. The hardest thing ye’ll ever do!” She set her hand on his arm.  “But worth it, I promise.”

Jamie said nothing.

“How’s Claire?”

Jamie opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again.  He scratched the back of his head, and leaned his elbows on the table.

“Testy.  Sharp-tongued.  Withdrawn sometimes.  And she cleans non-stop.”  His voice held a mixture of confusion, and frustration, tinged with fear.  “Jenny-” he stopped.

She waited patiently for him to continue.

“Jenny, I dinna ken what’s going on.  I’ve been changing nappies since wee Jamie was born.  One minute she’s fine with how I do it, the next time I’ve done it all wrong.  One minute I’m a savior for getting food from the market, the next I’ve put it away wrong.  How can a man put food away incorrectly?”  He swiveled in his chair and faced his sister, blue eyes stormy.  “It’s daft.  The mood swings are doing my head in!”

Memories flooded through Jenny.  Ah, piuthar mo chridhe.  Her heart broke a little for Claire.  She knew from experience that Jamie couldn’t deal with this.  In fact, if he tried he would only make it worse.

She could help, however.  She could lift both their burdens.

Despite her mind now planning and working overtime, Jenny turned and walked toward the office door as nonchalantly as possible.  “Aye.  ‘Tis normal.  Tell her I said hello, kiss the bairn for me, and let me know about Sunday, aye?”

Jamie acknowledged her request with a shouted “Aye!” but Jenny was already through the door, and into the hallway.

She returned to her office, shut the door, and picked up the phone.

It was answered on the third ring.

“Claire!  Glad I caught ye.  Listen, are ye busy this week?  Let’s meet for lunch.”

The Ties That Bind  by HJMoriarty and OfDarknessAndLight, @disappointed-son
E - 92,300
Hux’s shuttle is captured by the Resistance and Ben Solo is sent in to get whatever information he can from the prisoner.  Of course, things don’t go as planned and against their better judgement, they more or less fall in love, Ben defects to the First Order, and later, in a reversal of the more common direction of causality, there’s Classic Kylux (really hateful) Hate Sex™, puppet master Snoke, and the Hosnian System still meets its doom.

A Wonderful Caricature of Intimacy by @lovelyorbent
M - 3050
They loathe each other and are always looking for weaknesses to use against the other, in-between moments of insulting each other in flagrante delicto.  Just chilly, hateful, canonical-style Kylux hatesex, very well written in little snapshot style moments.  That’s it.

A canon divergence where the Empire didn’t fall, Hux’s military career is cut short by an injury, and they cross paths in a resort town where Ben Solo has gone a bit underground, as a belly dancer.  Hux returns night after night, getting drunk, and pining.  This author really excels at evoking a world with vividly drawn, fully realized characters.

The Apotheosis of Fox Hux by @theeascetic
E - 12,100 - updated 3/26/17
Hux disregards Ren’s advice to steer clear of a certain planet; there he encounters an ancient deity interested in teaching him a lesson - and finds himself partially transformed into a fox.  The author takes great care to detail how it feels to be physically altered in this way.  The Force is involved, too.  Hux doesn’t deal with it well.

A different take on Fox!Hux.  This one nods to Celtic tales of selkies and their magical skins.  Hux is the product of a mysterious mother who abandons him at birth; Brendol farms him out to a caretaker, so poor Hux has no idea that there’s anything unusual about his biology until he finds his fox skin.  Ren is surprisingly accepting of this state of affairs, but Snoke knows a good means of control when he sees one.

Lay With Me by @rosierivendell

A two-for-one; they’re both virgins and decide, pragmatically, warily, to help each other out.  Of course they go about it totally in-character (“Hux tries not to think of germs as Ren’s big lips move over his own”) and what follows is some spectacularly awkward sex; the author just lays a foundation and builds upon it detail by embarrassing detail - I could hardly get through more than a sentence or two without cringing, wincing, or laughing.

Pounded in the Butt by the Necessity My Poverty Affords Me  by @gefionne
E - 10,000
His original fiction isn’t selling too well (ie., not at all), so author Hux in a moment of drunken inspiration decides to follow in the footsteps of beloved (?) cultural icon Chuck Tingle; when he sobers up, 5k words of I’m Gay for My Unicorn Neighbor Dan is waiting for him in his laptop.  Many hilariously titled bizarre porn novels follow, despite the fact that Hux himself has never had sex.  He gains a following, including one very devoted fan who asks - can we meet?  A perfect mix of crack (treated a little bit seriously) and porn.

Kylo considers Hux a “poor excuse for a rival” but his constant casual mind-reading has picked up on Hux’s most common touchstone of thought - satisfaction at having remained essentially untouched sexually, which covers a deeper desire to be used and even defiled.  It’s distracting and keeps Kylo from doing his work.  Hux will have to submit for the good of the First Order.  Top-tier dialogue and insight into the ways they manipulate each other and why.

Cede by @robokittens

First time submissive virgin Ren is the subject of this fic, which lays out in knowing detail what it is that a person seeking this kind of experience wants and needs, and exactly how it feels - the blissful relief of being ‘away’.  What starts as a sort of service develops into something more, recounted in a series of tender (and very hot) scenes.

Part of a series (they are animal welfare officers, and Hux is demisexual), but stands as a one-shot.  Hux needs to turn his brain off for a bit so that he can calm down and perform well in a stressful situation.  Kylo comes in with something new to try (it was new to me, too) and proceeds to give Hux the kinky orgasm(s) of his life.  So there’s that, but it’s also intensely adoring and loving.

At the bottom of the high school pecking order, two bullied kids find strength in each other.  While we get to see into the thoughts and feelings of both, in particular, Hux’s personality and approach to dealing with his tormentors (he’s been at the very bottom, and for a long time) are  A+ canon-compliant.  Various forms of revenge are taken, but more importantly, they learn how to transcend their circumstances and the malevolent behavior of others…it’s empowering.  Beautifully described awkward and sweet first time: “Hux considered this only for a moment before yielding that it was a good point. “God I’m so glad I’m doing this with you,” he said, “and not anyone else. Because I can tell we’re going to be terrible at this.”

Boxer!Ben and Hux keep having casual hookups; neither one knows any but the barest facts about the other - but facts creep in, as they will, and slowly a tentative relationship develops.  There are family and mental health issues that Hux gets drawn into not quite against his will as he discovers more about Ben’s past.  And they have LOTS of great sex.  This is much better than my summary here probably makes it seem.

Unusual AU set in the National Socialist (Nazi) period in Germany; Hux and Kylo are devotees of swing music and dancing, which is considered degenerate.  They’re also gay teens in a hidden relationship, which puts them actively at risk.  The police state presses down inexorably upon them; Hux gets nastier, and Ben really doesn’t know what to do about that.  Both the source material (the movie Swing Kids, I’m assuming) and the historical events of this era don’t augur well for a happy ending, but the writing is so evocative, I’ll go there if that’s where the author is taking us.

Poetic language and a shifting, uncertain (nonlinear?) timeline - and possibly more than one in a sort of multiverse arrangement - are the backdrop for Fae!Hux, the dread emperor of the Fae, and the Knights which Hux has gathered across the centuries for the emperor with the help of his mentor Rae.  Elsewhere/when, Ben is certain he’s seen fairies more than once, and has an old photo that shows one, he thinks.  He needs to prove it for his own peace of mind.  This is just one chapter in and already very involved and fascinating.

There’s a very cinematic quality to this modern AU mobster?/assasin!Kylo fic; Kiss Kiss Bang Bang comes to mind.  Kylo is the kind of assassin who’s got the skills but also slops around in flip flops and making plans on the fly.  He has to go undercover from his own organization, run by Snoke, and hapless Hux the architect is his carjacking victim.  They drive from LA to “only Lord fucking knows where” in the desert with Phasma, among others, on their trail.

This is the first of what’s currently a series of three.  Hux finds himself at a warehouse party in Brooklyn with his coworkers, ready to watch the band whose singer is gothily attractive but annoying when they meet in-between sets.  However, the booze is flowing and aggressive edgy flirting leads to kisses and fondling on the dance floor, and more.  There’s a light touch of humor throughout.  By Part 3, there is a hint of feelings to go along with the snark and hook-ups.

If you’re in the mood for more rocker Ben and snappy Hux, this fic that was completed in September delivers.  They meet cute when Hux’s cat falls from the window to the street far below, caught by Ren on his way to band practice.  Hux rushes down the stairs wearing a shirt he stole from his ex that happens to be of Ben’s band.  They have nothing in common but a strong physical attraction - which eventually grows into “they are so stupidly in love with each other”.

Harry Potter AU; Hux is the Assistant Headmaster but it’s really a Skywalker family thing at Hogwarts.  A new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is needed; Ben is the best applicant by far.  Hux reluctantly hires him - unbeknownst to Ben, whose memories have been Obliviated, they have A Past.  Sparks fly pretty much right away and enough of the backstory has been revealed thus far to whet the appetite for more.

It’s Always Winter in St. Petersburg by @harlanhardway
E - 25,900 - updated 4/16/17
Another unusual AU setting - the last years of Tsarist Russia (Tsarina Leia is on the throne).  Scrappy peasant (and child of a prostitute) Hux does what he can, at age 12, to shift for himself in St. Petersburg.  He encounters a richly dressed boy, and ponders stealing his coat.  Instead, they develop an odd friendship - Kylo comes and goes over the course of a decade.  In all that time, Hux has no idea of his real identity.  While there is plenty of historical detail and some interesting tweaks (homosexuality is nbd, for example) to make the story work, it’s the fairytale-like feeling (I thought of the stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer especially) that gives it life.

Witcher moments (8) - Exquisite sarcasm

The mist thinned a little. Geralt extracted another letter from his bag, one he had recently received from a strange courier. He had already read it about thirty times.

“Dear friend …”

The witcher swore quietly, looking at the sharp, angular, even runes drawn with energetic sweeps of the pen, faultlessly reflecting the author’s mood. He felt once again the desire to try to bite his own backside in fury. When he was writing to the enchantress a month ago he had spent two nights in a row contemplating how best to begin. Finally, he had decided on ‘Dear friend’. Now he had his just deserts.

“Dear friend, your unexpected letter—which I received not quite three years after we last saw each other—has given me much joy. My joy is all the greater as various rumours have been circulating about your sudden and violent death. It is a good thing that you have decided to disclaim them by writing to me; it is a good thing, too, that you are doing so so soon. From your letter it appears that you have lived a peaceful, wonderfully boring life, devoid of all sensation. These days such a life is a real privilege, dear friend, and I am happy that you have managed to achieve it.

I was touched by the sudden concern which you deigned to show as to my health, dear friend. I hasten with the news that, yes, I now feel well; the period of indisposition is behind me, I have dealt with the difficulties, the description of which I shall not bore you with.

It worries and troubles me very much that the unexpected present you received from Fate brings you worries. Your supposition that this requires professional help is absolutely correct. Although your description of the difficulty—quite understandably—is enigmatic, I am sure I know the Source of the problem. And I agree with your opinion that the help of yet another magician is absolutely necessary.

I feel honoured to be the second to whom you turn. What have I done to deserve to be so high on your list?

Rest assured, my dear friend; and if you had the intention of supplicating the help of additional magicians, abandon it because there is no need. I leave without delay, and go to the place which you indicated in an oblique yet, to me, understandable way. It goes without saying that I leave in absolute secrecy and with great caution. I will surmise the nature of the trouble on the spot and will do all that is in my power to calm the gushing source. I shall try, in so doing, not to appear any worse than other ladies to whom you have turned, are turning or usually turn with your supplications. I am, after all, your dear friend. Your valuable friendship is too important to me to disappoint you, dear friend.

Should you, in the next few years, wish to write to me, do not hesitate for a moment. Your letters invariably give me boundless pleasure.

Your friend Yennefer”

The letter smelled of lilac and gooseberries.

Geralt cursed.

I loved Yen before but after I read this letter and I finished laughing I loved her even more. This sarcasm is priceless.

"Kishimoto said the SNS relationship is based on the one he have with his brother" /// " Sasuke and Naruto had no development" //// "they are not even friends" // "i chill every time someone say sasuke and naruto are soulmates, like there is nowhere stated that?"

Send me claims you’re sick of hearing, and I’ll refute them.

“Kishimoto said SNS’ relationship is based on the one he has with his brother.”

→ I’d like to see any source for that. Nonetheless, it doesn’t erase the romantic nature of their relationship. Both refuted this claim with their actions through unreliable narration. Let’s say Kishimoto consciously chose to change Naruto’s way of labelling his relationship to Sasuke. The unreliable narrator is not uncommon when you decide to use homodiegetic narrators, something that applies to all narrators in Naruto. Consequently, the unreliable narrator forces us to question whether or not an expressed element of narration is true or not and creates an intended doubt between the reader and the work.

While an unreliable narrator can be simply unreliable because of lack of information, they can also be unreliable due to cultural conventions, biases, prejudices, psychological issues—or even farther, an attempt of the author to double the communication between themselves and the reader by giving an explicit and implicit narration. So yes, Naruto was literarily an unreliable narrator. But once one embraces the concept of the unreliable narrator, one has to embrace it with the entire extent it comes with. The usage of the unreliable narrator does not always make sense. Unreliable narration is not supposed to be easily detectable by the reader; otherwise, it would be very reliable in that the reader would know exactly what to believe. The unreliable narrator can purposefully mislead the reader for any reason, and, depending on the genre, sometimes for no reason at all.

For example, if one goes back in a story, one can notice changes in words and actions such as in a whodunnit. From “I didn’t do it” to “I couldn’t ever do anything like that” to “I’m sure I’d never do anything like that.” (Subtext = “I did it.”) This logic happens to apply to Naruto’s wording:

In the beginning, Naruto says their bond is similar to a brotherhood and calls Sasuke his brother.

Moving forward, he corrects this and says they are friends.

Around the same time, he denies that he and Sasuke are brothers.

Towards the end, Sasuke asks him the same question and wants to know what Naruto meant when he said they are friends. Suddenly, Naruto isn’t sure anymore how to answer his question because the feelings he has for Sasuke are far too great and deep. We, as the readers, can notice subtle changes. Are they brothers? Friends? Lovers? They aren’t brothers, Naruto denied it. And it can’t be a normal friendship, Sasuke questioned this. It’s pretty evident that Sasuke is aware that there is more than just friendship. That’s why he insists that Naruto should further explain what his understanding of friendship is. Sasuke knows what friend means, but he doesn’t know what friend means to Naruto because Naruto’s actions can’t be easily waved aside as “that’s what best friends do for each other.”

If they, however, want to imply SNS is an incestuous ship, then I can only shake my head in amusement because incest is defined as sexual activities between family members or close relatives. They are not real brothers. Naruto and Sasuke are reincarnations in different families that aren’t related to each other. Even if Naruto and Sasuke would be the reincarnations of Asura and Indra, it contradicts with the way Edo Tensei works, as it requires the soul and body to sacrifice. By their logic, Kabuto wouldn’t have been able to bring Madara back from the realms of death. On top of this, one has to be directly related in order to be in an incestuous relationship—not distantly through hundreds of bloodline differences.

“SNS had no development.”

→ SNS is the relationship that dominated the entire series, no question. SNS will always be the centre of the story, no matter whom they choose to marry. No relationship they have is as intense as the one they share with one another. Having said that, there are parts of SNS which are already very much canon. On a literary level, one of the main motives of the series was bonds, and Naruto and Sasuke’s is arguably the strongest with the most prominent focus on. Not only do they connect on an emotional level through their trauma of loneliness but also form two necessary ideological and philosophical halves of a peaceful ideal. These two factors make Sasuke the important addition to Naruto’s life goals:

  • Naruto’s first dream is to become Hokage. However, he realises that he can’t be entrusted with the village if he isn’t even able to save the person dearest to him. It is therefore Sasuke’s happiness/peace of mind that Naruto wants to ensure himself before he pursues his own dream.
  • His second goal is the one that he adapts gradually through the deaths/sacrifices of the people dear to him and becomes a major topic, which is to seek a way in which chakra can be used peacefully and connect ninjas rather than turn them against each other. Although Naruto and Sasuke have vastly differing plans of achieving their dream of peace, we learn that neither one holds the solution. They have to combine their ways and start to understand each other’s views to achieve a peaceful system.

This, on the other hand, tells us that the story cannot reach its conclusion if Naruto fails to save Sasuke. Thus, this proves that SNS is indeed developed. If the time jump had occurred right after 698 and had them shown to be in a relationship, the necessary literary material would have been there for the reader to understand how deeply they feel for each other.

“They are not even friends.”

→ Um… this… is funny.

“Naruto and Sasuke are not soul mates. Where is this stated?”

→ In a figurative kind of way tying into literal concepts of spirituality in Naruto, you can say Naruto and Sasuke are soul mates. They are from lineages that can be traced back to the two sons of the Sage of Six Paths, Asura and Indra.

There’s a cyclical nature of the long-term progression of the world in Naruto where the descendants of Asura and Indra come into conflict and the confrontation of Naruto and Sasuke’s ideals are seen as a part of it.

In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be interconnected and complementary in the natural world. Everything has both yin and yang aspects. Yin cannot exist without yang like a shadow cannot exist without light, literally meaning Naruto cannot exist without Sasuke.
