Matter without spirit is a corpse. Spirit without matter is a ghost.“ - Marion Woodman

Yoga joins the body and mind, spirit and matter, so that they can function at their highest levels in harmony. By doing yoga you learn to tune into the small nuances of your body, and thus become more mindful of yourself, your actions and everything around you. Hence why so many gain so much personal growth through their practice. Join me on Wednesday and Thursday to explore this gorgeous practice and create a better affinity between your physical and spiritual selves.

Conquering headstand is always a big milestone for any yogi. I always tell my students that the tough part of this pose is getting into it, not “being” in it, because you have to use your abs to lift your legs up. Therefore, an amazing core exercise, as well as great headstand prep, is to lower and lift your legs from the initial ball shape to hip height with either bent or straight legs. Doing this will strengthen your entire torso and help you learn to stabilize within the shape while your legs are in motion, making headstand a cinch.

Parsvottanasana, aka Intense Side Side Stretch Pose, is an intense hamstring and spine lengthener. Adding the reverse prayer helps to open the chest and shoulders as well as strengthen the core and legs as they need to be engaged to hold the balance. This pose helps to calm the mind as it requires full concentration which forces one into the present moment. Join me both Wednesday and Thursday morning for class at the times listed below to start your day feeling present, open and strong. ✨

So set your alarms just a wee bit earlier than normal and join me @sanghayogashala on Wednesday and Thursday at the times below.

Dolphin Pose, aka Forearm Downdog, is amazing shoulder and chest opener. This pose also opens the hamstrings, strengthens the forearms and relaxes the mind. Walking the feet in towards the arms and holding up one leg in downdog split is great prep for Forearm Stand. We will be exploring this pose and more in my classes today and this weekend. See you there!

It’s the last day of summer and fall’s approach can be felt in the cool air. Join me tonight at 7:30pm at Sangha Yoga Shala for some invigorating, strengthening and lengthening vinyasa flow as your final salutation to the warm months. See you there!

As tough as it may be, Plank Pose is unbeatable when it comes to strengthening benefits. Not only does this pose strengthen the arms and wrists, it also seriously tones the abs, back and spine. Kicking out through the heels opens the calves and engages the legs to strengthen the quads. Whenever I have a student who is having trouble mastering their Chaturanga, I recommend holding plank for at least a minute a day to help strengthen and thus achieve their goal. Join me today and this weekend to master your plank, as well as lots of other fun, strengthening and opening poses. Times and studios listed below.

Kapotasana is an intense backbend that opens the entire front of the body including the psoas, chest, thighs, ankles and even the throat. It also strengthens the back and stimulates the abdominal organs. Backbends like this are useful after a long workweek leaning over a desk. Join me today and this weekend to reset your body and mind to healthy with yoga. Times and studios listed below.

Half Bound Reverse Warrior opens while strengthening, making it an extremely beneficial pose. This asana strengthens the legs, while simultaneously opening the hips, side ribs, chest and shoulders. The farther you lean back the more the core becomes engaged thus strengthening the abs as well. Expect to come into this pose and many more on Thursday morning at either of my classes in BK and Manhattan.

Halasana or Plow Pose is not only fantastic for your thyroid, shoulders and spine but it also feels amazing on your lower back. Instead of doing the more commonly practiced version with tucked toes, I’m practicing the Ashtanga version of Plow, with untucked, pointed toes, in the photo above. This stretches out the shin muscles versus the calves. We will be getting into our Plow and many other poses today in my 5pm Vinyasa class at Sangha Yoga Shala. Hope to see you there!

Half Bound Triangle is one of my favorite poses and I include it in almost all of my classes as it seems to open the body in all of the right places. As Triangle Pose does, it opens the hamstrings and hips, as well as strengthens the abs. By adding the half bind, the chest and shoulders get a deep stretch that feels heavenly, the more you lean back while pressing into your hip crease, the nicer the stretch. Join me Thursday morning at 6:30am at Sangha Yoga Shala or at 9am at Karen Lord Pilates Movement for some body opening, strengthening and energizing that will guarantee an amazing day ahead.

Triang Mukhaikapada Pashimottanasana, is a wonderful stretch for both the front and back of the legs. Part of the Ashtanga Primary Series, this pose lengthens the hamstrings and spine, as well as opens the quads and knees. Start your Thursday with me in either BK or Manhattan and begin your day your day on a high note.
