Dolphin Pose, aka Forearm Downdog, is amazing shoulder and chest opener. This pose also opens the hamstrings, strengthens the forearms and relaxes the mind. Walking the feet in towards the arms and holding up one leg in downdog split is great prep for Forearm Stand. We will be exploring this pose and more in my classes today and this weekend. As tough as it may be, Plank Pose is unbeatable when it comes to strengthening benefits. Not only does this pose strengthen the arms and wrists, it also seriously tones the abs, back and spine. Kicking out through the heels opens the calves and engages the legs to strengthen the quads. Whenever I have a student who is having trouble mastering their Chaturanga, I recommend holding plank for at least a minute a day to help strengthen and thus achieve their goal. Backbends are extremely beneficial in our modern day lives. Sitting at a desk tends to make one hunch over, tightening the hips and chest and encouraging bad posture. Backbends like Cobra (shown above) counter act the daily hours spent at a desk by opening the chest, shoulders and psoas, lengthening the spine and strengthening the back muscles. Upward Facing Dog, aka Urdhva Mukha Svanasana, is an amazing chest and shoulder opening pose. It also strengthens the legs, arms and wrists, lengthens the spine and opens the fronts of the hips. It can be fun to play around in the pose with shoulder rolls or letting the hips sink lower to get a longer spinal stretch. Half Bound Reverse Warrior opens while strengthening, making it an extremely beneficial pose. This asana strengthens the legs, while simultaneously opening the hips, side ribs, chest and shoulders. The farther you lean back the more the core becomes engaged thus strengthening the abs as well. Expect to come into this pose and many more on Thursday morning at either of my classes in BK and Manhattan.

Kapotasana is an intense backbend that opens the entire front of the body including the psoas, chest, thighs, ankles and even the throat. It also strengthens the back and stimulates the abdominal organs. Backbends like this are useful after a long workweek leaning over a desk. Half Bound Triangle is one of my favorite poses and I include it in almost all of my classes as it seems to open the body in all of the right places. As Triangle Pose does, it opens the hamstrings and hips, as well as strengthens the abs. By adding the half bind, the chest and shoulders get a deep stretch that feels heavenly, the more you lean back while pressing into your hip crease, the nicer the stretch. Join me Thursday morning at 6:30am at Sangha Yoga Shala or at 9am at Karen Lord Pilates Movement for some body opening, strengthening and energizing that will guarantee an amazing day ahead.

Triang Mukhaikapada Pashimottanasana, is a wonderful stretch for both the front and back of the legs. Part of the Ashtanga Primary Series, this pose lengthens the hamstrings and spine, as well as opens the quads and knees. Heron Pose, Krounchasana, is a serious hamstring and knee stretch as one leg is extended up and the other is situation in Hero variation with the heel outside of the hip. We’ll be giving this pose a shot in all three of my Thursday classes so you can start and end your day with a stretch.
