I know Canada is effed up for indigenous peoples, does it also have the same problems the Americans have with other minorities being threatened? IE- Black people and Latinos and people of Asian and Middle Eastern descent?

There is certainly racism towards other ethnic groups. Don’t believe anyone who proclaims that this doesn’t happen up here:

Ancient traditions that aren’t

I’m fascinated by the respect commanded by (ostensibly) ancient things. Especially when the supposedly ancient is, in fact, quite modern. A couple requests for my (not terribly numerous) readers:

  1. What are some examples of this phenomenon that I don’t already know about?
  2. What’s a good tag for this topic?

List of things along these lines that I’ve read about or posted before below the cut.

  • I’ve posted before about “nations” (in the sense of a state-sized population bound together by a common language and high culture) being comparatively recent.
  • I recently read some stuff that @nostalgebraist linked about the history of the study of literature / “the english major”.
  • I’m aware that yoga (in the way we understand it) is a 20th century phenomenon (related to nascent Indian nationalism?).
  • That whole thing about ancient greek and roman statues originally being painted (gaudily). Same thing about temples in Japan.
  • Ancient Chinese poetry actually just rhymed (and sound change is why it doesn’t, not some aesthetic consideration).

It starts at a party.

You’re dancing with your friends, beer in hand, hair held back with a headband, gold paint swiped down your temple, curling around your cheekbones.

Those damned cheekbones and that damned jawline. A bone structure carved from history. You are catastrophically beautiful.

Marlene waves at you; she tells me you’re old family friends. Your chin lifts, corners of your mouth lifting to reveal lines of perfect teeth. Her hands grabs mine and she’s weaving us through the crowds of hot bodies.

“Marls.” You say, pulling her into a hug and kissing her cheek. She screws up her face.

“Boundaries, Potter.”

You smirk at me. “She loves me really.” She scoffs but there is sunlight glinting in her smile.

Charles Temple Dix (1838-1873)
“Flying Dutchman”
Oil on canvas

The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship that can never make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. The myth is likely to have originated from 17th century nautical folklore, with the oldest extant version being dated to the late 18th century. Sightings in the 19th and 20th centuries reported the ship to be glowing with ghostly light. If hailed by another ship, the crew of the Flying Dutchman will try to send messages to land, or to people long dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is a portent of doom.

BTS Scenario: Finals Week

Hi cutie! Since being in love plays an aspect in this, I decided I wanted it to be a fluffy kind of smut where he’s more like making love to you than just having sex with you, I hope this is what you were looking for!

Pairing: Jin x Reader

Genre: Smut/Fluff

Word Count: 1.5 K

Summary: It wasn’t that you were terrible in school, it was that you just needed a little help, and for the longest time you refused to ask for it. That was until your math teacher introduced you to Kim Seokjin. Not only was he intelligent, he was breathtakingly beautiful. Now, an entire quarter of the school year has passed and you’re preparing for finals with him. Internal frustration is at an all time high. He knows you so well, can see the defeat in your eyes. It makes his heart ache. So he decides to take your mind off of it for a little while.

He was glowing in the early afternoon sunlight filtering in from the school’s windows and glinting his glasses. You knew that the stack of study guides scattered across the table in front of you should’ve been your first and only priority, but gazing fondly at Seokjin seemed to take precedence naturally. As if sensing the weight of your gaze on his shoulders, Jin cleared his throat, eyes still trained dutifully on his own papers. “It’s not polite to stare.”

Sitting up a little straighter in your seat, your grip tightened on your pen and a fire started burning in the apples of your cheeks. He lifted his head, eyes now settling on you as a serene smile nestled on his face. His light brown hair turned golden in the glimmering sun rays, crowning him holy. You were flabbergasted. “You’re very distracted today. Only twenty minutes ago you were telling me about how stressed you are for finals, and now you won’t even finish the practice problem I gave you.” The fondness that had painted his features was still evident though the corners of his lips turned down into a frown, concern etching wrinkles between his brows. “Is everything okay?”
