I am a volunteer patient escort at planned parenthood

This is something I just shared on FB about my experiences as a patient escort. Just thought I’d put it on here too.

Alright y'all. Prepare for a long post, but one you should read.

Some of you know, but some of you don’t, that I volunteer at Planned Parenthood about twice a month. My official title is Volunteer Clinic Escort. My role is to safely get patients and family into the clinic safely, with privacy, and with a friendly face. Not all Planned Parenthoods (PP) have these, but the clinic where I volunteer does because we have loud, abrasive, volatile, threatening, verbally abusive and dishonest anti-choice protesters who harass people in the clinic. I would like to tell you about my experiences with them and with patients who talk to me as I stand outside with my umbrella and vest.

(I would like to note that this is not the place to tell me that abortion is wrong, that I should not support PP, that I need to stop what I’m doing. I’ve heard every argument before. In fact, I’ve had every arguement screamed in my face. You’re welcome to your opinion, but I will not be acknowledging it on here, and I ask that others ignore dissenters too. This post isn’t about me and why you think I’m wrong. It’s about what I see every time I volunteer.)

When I am volunteering, I am outside and often have patients and family members talk with me. I’m obviously not there to counsel or to offer advice medically one way or another, but I am a friendly ear and people just need to talk sometimes. Also, when volunteering, patients entering the clinic are verbally harassed by the anti choice protesters almost immediately and, while we don’t encourage it, they often yell back. The protesters don’t listen.

On my very first day, I had a person head into the clinic. As I smiled to her and went to get the door, an anti-choice protester (ACP) yelled “Mama! Don’t kill your baby!” The patient immediately responded tearfully “my baby is dead. My baby is falling out of me right now. I didn’t do anything.” The ACP, without missing a beat, screamed back through her child-sized megaphone “No he isn’t! Your doctor lied to you! These murderers just want your money!” I ushered in the patient as gently as I could while my co-volunteer told her kindly that those people didn’t matter and that in a week they wouldn’t even remember what they heard here.

In the year and a half I’ve been doing this, we have had a ACP sneak into the clinic and threaten to burn the place down. The police did nothing. We had two other ACPs try and enter the clinic to tell patients they would adopt their babies. We told them to get off the property and when they didn’t, we called the police. Eventually the ACP returned to the narrow strip of lawn they stand on at the edge of the parking lot, and luckily so, because the police never showed again.

My clinic, luckily, has never faced extreme violence while I was there. But other PP and health care clinics are not so lucky. They are burned down, have bombs planted, have clinic escorts and workers physically harmed.

They are shot at and three people die.

I have had patients tell me that they will be killed by their partner if they have an abortion. I have been told that their partner will kill them if they DON’T have one. I’ve been told how people with physical disabilities cannot carry a child without side effects so severe they may not survive. I’ve had patients explain that their mental health is at risk if they go through with the pregnancy. I’ve had patients come in with a wanted pregnancy that ended in miscarriage and they needed PPs help to safely remove the tissue. I’ve seen people come in who admit to being addicted to drugs and know they cannot go through this pregnancy.

Planned Parenthood helped all these people, not just with medical care, but with helping abused patients find help to escape violent partners. Helping those who want to conceive find fertility doctors. Helping drug addicts find resources to become healthy.

All the while, the ACP stand outside, screaming and hollering, telling women that they are murderers and whores and that they will burn for murdering their babies. But it’s ok, they do it out of love. They scream at these people and tell them awful things and then beg to have the patient come talk with them.

They don’t see the hypocrisy.

It is a rule to not engage with the ACP at all. In the year and a half I’ve been doing this, I’ve said maybe a total of 50 words to the group, all of which are some form of “you are on our property, step back right now.” I may not engage them, but we can make eye contact and make them believe we are listening. We do this so the ACP begins shouting at me, and not a patient getting air outside. I would much rather be shouted at than have them scream at a patient.

When I am being yelled at, I have been called: a murderer, a nazi, a slavery supporter, a bad mother, a bad wife (they do not know if I am married or if I have children), a witch, a lesbian, a liberal, a member of satan’s army, a Muslim lover, a bitch, a slut, and evil. Some of these things are true and some are perfectly fine things to be, but to the ACP they are all bad.

Sometimes we have patient partners come talk to the protesters. They try and explain to the ACP why they are there with their partner. I’ve heard them tell the ACP every single reason, and every single time, the protesters still tell them they are wrong and a bad father and a supporter of Satan. Every. Time. And they call this love.

Since Trump took office, one of his first orders signed was a Global Gag Rule. People thought that this rule meant that no US money would go to pay for abortions overseas, but in fact, US funds have never paid for abortions and haven’t since 1973. Even in the US, because of the Hyde Amendment, no federal funding goes to pay for abortions.

What this gag rule now does, however, is prevent money from going to clinics that even mention abortion as a method of family planning. They don’t have to perform them. If they are mentioned at all in pamphlets or classes, they lose foreign aid money. This means that now they can’t provide birth control, wellness checks, prenatal care, or classes.

This will cause unwanted pregnancies. This will cause people to seek out abortions, often in unsafe condition.

This will cause people to die.

Roughly 1/3 people with a uterus will have an abortion in their life. I haven’t spoken to everyone who has had one, but I’ve spoken to more than most. No one gets an abortion out of malice. No one gets an abortion just to end the life of a fetus, just for kicks. No. One.

Planned Parenthood provides important health services, including abortion. They do this despite the risk of physical bodily harm, every day. People like myself stand outside PP to protect patients because it is important.

We. Will. Not. Stand. Down.

I will continue to volunteer, even though since Trump was elected, the ACP have gotten more and more aggressive in their tactics, since they believe Trump supports their actions. I will continue to walk these patients inside, to get help, because it is important and right. I will continue to fight Trump the slew of anti choice people supporting him. I will continue to support choice even though I know I will lose friends and will face hatred from people I know.

Planned Parenthood is important, and we will not stand down.

This episode was written by Toby Whithouse.

  • We open in a world where the monks have total control- we literally see them “doctor footage” of humanity, erasing and re-writing history. This is most majorly like Sherlock when we see footage of the monks killing the daleks when it was in fact, of course, the Doctor: compare with The Six Thatchers, with Mycroft showing the “official version” of a squaddie killing Magnussen rather than Sherlock.
  • We see the Doctor broadcasting the Monks’ lies on TV- looking very much like both Moriarty’s and Mary’s “broadcasts” via the screen.
  • Throughout the episode, we get glitchy effects of the monks’ and their ‘truth’ symbol- effects that very, very much so resemble Moriarty’s glitchy ‘Miss Me?’ broadcast. The words quickly appearing and disappearing also reminded me of Henry seeing the words ‘Liberty’ and ‘In’ during The Hounds of Baskerville.
  • Bill talks to her dead Mum throughout the episode- the effect of her Mum appearing for Bill and then later disappearing from the audience’s point of view visually resembles John talking to Mary in The Lying Detective.
  • We see that the monks’ interfere and manipulate people’s memories (there’s even a ‘Memory Police’), Bill notes that after her asking the Monks for help she can remember “nothing.” Compare with the missing narrative and memories in Sherlock: Faith in The Lying Detective saying she “can’t remember” who Culverton is going to kill.
  • Further on unreliable narration: Bill says, “Every day it’s harder to remember what’s real anymore.” She has to remember that the Doctor “wasn’t just a dream”, and what she did, along with him and Nardole “actually happened.” This can relate to Sherlock with multiple theories of series 4 being unreliable narration, possibly an alibi for John, who shot Mary, John who is injured after being shot by “Eurus”), desperately trying to remember “what actually happened” during his ‘dream’ of The Final Problem. Unreliable narration is further shown in the bluffs the Doctor pulls- he has to fake being under the Monks’ influence.
  • The Doctor says “Goodnight, Vienna!”- Sherlock says the very same in The Great Game.
  • Bill rashly pulling the gun on the Doctor resembles the suddenness of Norbury pulling the gun on Mary- the Doctor doesn’t die from being ‘shot’ and Mary…? ;) See here for more on Mary faking her death.
  • The Doctor saying, “It’s not a trick, it’s not a plan.” Compare with Sherlock’s line in The Lying Detective: “Of course it’s not a trick, it’s a plan.” (Of course, we later find out in Doctor Who that it is also a plan ;) )
  • The Doctor hijacks a ship- see John and Sherlock becoming ‘pirates’ to hijack a fishing boat in The Final Problem.
  • The Doctor visits Missy in her ‘prison.’ IT IS VISUALLY REMARAKABLY LIKE EURUS IN SHERRINFORD, COMPLETE WITH GLASS WALLS. SHE EVEN PLAYS A PIANO IN HER PRISON JUST LIKE EURUS PLAYS A VIOLIN. *ahem*
  • The Doctor was in prison for 6 months and so couldn’t visit Missy= In His Last Vow, Sherlock was going to be sent to Eastern Europe for 6 months; Irene wouldn’t have lasted 6 months without her ‘protection’… “6 months” is a recurring time frame in both Sherlock and Doctor Who.
  • When Bill sacrifices herself to try and defeat the Monks: “They’re hijacking her memories. Infecting them like a virus.”= Moriarty is the ‘virus in the data’ in Sherlock’s mind. The Doctor says here that Bill is ‘dying for nothing.’ I see this as possibly being tied to John– currently dying from a gunshot (he’ll be saved though), and his memories have been corrupted by the nightmare of The Final Problem. I’ve linked this meta before, but see here for the Mary drugging John theory, manipulating his memories just like the monks are doing here..
  • The Lone Monk sitting in “Fake News Central” (nice dig at Trump there <3), with the many film clips displayed around him visually is like Magnussen watching the bonfire footage from The Empty Hearse. Also, of course, the monks act like CCTV, and as said doctor footage, rather like a certain Mycroft Holmes, the British Government... tagging @waitedforgarridebs to scream ;)
  • The Doctor saying “Bill’s Mum, you just went viral”- compare with this line in The Lying Detective: “We’re beyond viral.”

Thank you for reading and if you’ve spotted any more parallels, feel free to add! Next week is an episode written by Mark Gatiss, and features the Victorian era… of course. ;) See you next week! xxx

Interviewed by DWM: PCap basically stated that the Doctor never forgets anyone. He never forgot Clara.

If this is “true”. There are several things to note:

  1. The Doctor lied. (Laughing really hard as I wrote that line.)
  2. The Doctor literally pulled the wool over our eyes. He faked his own memory wipe. He faked the whole ‘lost boy in the diner’ scene. Why? Because he loves Clara dearly. Because Clara loves him dearly. And the only possible way out is to convince her that he’s forgotten her. He knows how she thinks, but she always misses a detail (#3). In a perfectly engineered situation, the Doctor cons Clara (and Ashildr, really) into a break up of their duo.
  3. The Doctor isn’t partially-human. Remember the neuron blocker thingy was ‘human’ compatible. It shouldn’t have worked on the Doctor, unless he was partially human. So even if Clara managed to ‘reverse the polarity’, it was still human compatible. Also, I understand that the Doctor did not deny he was half-human when Ashildr accused of being half-human. But, he just as well lied to her by not saying anything (#6).
  4. The Doctor is trying to repay a debt. His plan was to live through 4.5 billion years, feigning confessions so he could save Clara. He “saves” her. And yes, he loves her. No doubt about it. But, I also think he is trying to pay his debt. He treated Clara unfairly for so long, but she turned around and saved him. Not just once, but every incarnation. She helped him save Gallifrey. She stopped him from becoming a war criminal. In return, he offered her the chance to see all she can however long she can.
  5. The Doctor always knew Team Doctor-Clara was dangerous. Missy. If Missy engineered their meeting, then all the safe-guards are off. We noticed, with great subtlety, how Clara changed within S9. In S8, she was his foil. In S9, she was on the bandwagon. He knew this; it had to stop. But, he couldn’t because FtR happened. And it hurt him. Instead of letting her go, he uses his skills/abilities/superpowers to return to Gallifrey, extract her, and offer her #4.
  6. The Doctor knew where to look for Ashildr. At the end of time, 5 minutes before hell. The Doctor knew Ashildr was who Clara needed. Ashildr is a brilliant foil to the Doctor throughout S9. Yes; she made mistakes but she never meant grievous harm. While it may have looked like the Doctor and Ashildr were/are enemies, their relationship kinda/sorta echoes what he and Clara had in S8. So, what a brilliant plan. Set up Ashildr with Clara. It would help Ashildr because Clara is still a mayfly (her life is frozen between 2 heart beats). It’s like pulling a Missy, except Team Impossible-Immortal won’t be a destructive pair.
  7. The Doctor hasn’t had a taste of his own medicine. Ugh. This is where, I want to do this <gif below>. SURPRISE!!!! The Doctor hasn’t changed. Not one dot. He’s still the same old, same, old.

I don’t know what happened since FtR. But, if there’s the possibility that the Doctor lied about not remembering Clara… I will say this: Steven Moffat got me. He wrung my heart out. He made it so that I felt heart-broken over Team Doctor/Clara. Simultaneously, he managed not to kill off Clara and open the possibility of her return.

If the Doctor lied, SM managed to show us that the Doctor will always be the Doctor….  Fourteen thousand steps ahead of us.

Bonus thought: Both SM and the Doctor lie, but PCap does not *cough* Weakness. Hahaha…

Something involving the doctor occurred to me awhile back, and others have probably thought of this previously, but here goes. The Doctor says everything and everyone is important, right? Well what's River Song's first rule? The Doctor lies. Opinions?

River’s not the only one who thinks this though! The Eleventh Doctor himself even changed his number one rule from time to time: instead of “Don’t wander off” it became “The Doctor lies”.

But I don’t necessarily think that means he’s lying specifically when he says that everyone is important! I think River is referring to when the Doctor lies for the sake of the greater good (or at least, what he perceives the greater good to be), like during the whole “my death is a fixed point in time” thing, and really the entirety of The Wedding of River Song.

So when it comes to River and her experiences with the Doctor: yeah, I don’t really blame her for associating the Doctor with lying.

How could anyone think this is a name?

If it is it’s the longest name I’ve ever seen. How would you even sign that? It would take an hour to write!

Also, it was written on the side of a baby crib, people usually don’t carve the baby’s name into the crib, so it’s probably a nursery rhyme or something like that.

If it is a name it probably isn’t even the Doctor’s name. Yes I know he said it was his crib, but who keeps their crib their entire life? We know he had kids so that’s probably why he had it.

Because remember rule number one: The Doctor lies.

Cigarettes, vodka, unending nights, bruises; that’s pretty much what describes Wonho.

Flowers, water, sleepless nights, bruises; and that’s you.

He exhales smoke, and you inhale his smoke. You do not know which is more dangerous.

Months of dating and staying in different places with Wonho gave you all the opportunities to experience something you’ve never felt before.

Euphoria.

Being with him is a mix of ecstasy and tragedy. You clearly left your fears to be with him. You turned your back to your past principles just to face a new one with him.

But it is sure isn’t an easy life.

Going home after weeks with a bag on his shoulder containing all the money he made to buy anything the both of you wished; and to seal every promise he made you just before you were his— became a routine.

You mostly wakes up in the middle of the night just to see him taking a sip on his cigarette while looking at the new view from the top floor of an espensive hotel. The city lights dancing along with his irises. Different night, different city. Same situation.

You didn’t complain, you never do. Because with Wonho, you get to experience a lot of things. You get to taste any food you wanted to eat, every place you wanted to visit. With Wonho, nothing is impossible. And that’s enough for you.

Requested by anon:

hi can you do a 11th doctor x female reader based off “rule number one the doctor always lies” and just like quite angsty and dramatic thank you also hope you had a wonderful christmas and new year !! x

Requested by anon:

Can you do an imagine about doctor who (eleven) where the reader and the doctor are on an adventure and they meet a weeping angel but reader gets caught by one then the doctor saves the reader and at the end they kiss (lots of fluff pls)

Requested by @darkknightiplier:

The reader getting in trouble with some kind of alien or other kind of supernatural thing. The Doctor saves you in time and feels like there’s something special about you that he gives you a key to the tardis and the reader becoming the companion?

There was something in the air. An eerie feeling confirmed my hunch that something strange was happening that day.

I tried to go on with my life, even if a constant dread told me something awful was about to happen. Something I couldn’t really explain. An intuition, perhaps.

All I knew was the environment felt different. And just as I thought about that, I realized something: I couldn’t hear a sound.

That was odd, especially because the streets were usually crowded with people and filled with varied noises. The silence was unsettling all of a sudden, even if some days I found myself wishing for it.

I warily walked around the streets, wondering what was happening, when I saw it.

A strange figure, which oddly resembled a statue even if I had a feeling it could move. It was right in front of me, and I was paralyzed by fear.

“Don’t move!” A voice yelled behind me, making me turn my head. “And don’t blink!”

“What?” I asked in confusion, frowning as I stared at the strange man running in my direction.

“No, don’t look at me! Look at it!” The man told me urgently, pointing a finger to the statue in front of me. “Keep your eyes on it!”

I obeyed, turning my head again so I was facing it. Once my eyes were settled on it, I realized it was closer. At mere centimeters from my face.

I screamed in fear, realizing it had actually moved. It was alive, or at least sentient. Which was extremely scary.

Especially due to the fact that it had moved its hands to uncover his eyes and the angelical and calm posture from before evolved into a threatening and wild one that seemed to imply it wanted to kill me. Judging by its teeth and terrifying appearance.

“What is this?!” I exclaimed, keeping my eyes on the statue and trying not to blink as the man had commanded me to.

“Weeping angels” He replied, getting ahold of my wrist and cautiously and slowly pulling at it. “If you aren’t looking at them, they move and get you”

“Then what should we do?” I gulped, breathing heavily because of the fear that was taking over me.

“Just keep looking” He said as though he was trying to stay calm.

“Okay” I slowly walked with him as he gently pulled at my wrist, still trying to take a few steps away from them.

“Oh, and one more thing?”

“What?”

“Run!”
