THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE/THE BLUE ANGEL LOUNGE
Despite an off schedule bus and a Motown serenade from a bum, the few songs that I was able to see of the Blue Angel Lounge were killer. Remember when you lost your virginity? Remember the first time someone close to you died? Put those two events together and the soundtrack playing is Blue Angel Lounge. Don’t believe me? Listen.
For a band that changes members more frequently than I change my underwear, it was nice to see so many familiar faces in the now, eight person Brian Jonestown Massace. I will say, I was a little disappointed there wasn’t any drama. For a band with a track record parallel to that of the Gallagher brothers, I was expecting something, but the only abnormal happening was Matt Hollywood leaving mid-set to use the facilities. A lot of times, when bands have been around for eons, like BJM, the shows can be totally hit or miss. We’ve all been to those shows where So and So and the So and So’s decided to make a new album, but now they’re happy and married and have babies and castles in space and the music royally blows. Not the case with BJM. I don’t know about the wives and castles in space, but the music is what it was back in the 90’s. They played everything anybody could have wanted, but then again, they didn’t really have much of a choice with a set that spanned nearly two and a half hours. I’m not sure about the dude that OD’d next to me, but everyone else seemed to enjoy themselves. Go see ‘em if you have the chance.
I’m going to lay down and listen to this on repeat for about 45 minutes and then watch the Clippers/Lakers game and then shower and then sleep for about 5 hours and then go to work….this is my Friday night.
