the writers on this show are my favourite thing

12x10 - “Pterodactyl Screeching into the void” - Part 1

My title is borrowed from @postmodernmulticoloredcloak comment on my crazy blogging after first watching this episode earlier. I feel like it is a fitting title for how this episode made me feel. To clarify, these are very very happy pterodactyls.

Steve Yokey wrote this episode and he appears to have well and truly taken up the gap left when Robbie Thompson sadly left the show. In fact this episode to me channels the ghost of Robbie in many different ways. From the fanfiction-esque moments of poor suffering third wheel Sam, to the meta nod to Charlie Bradbury, there is much of Robbie to be found here. Basically, it was bloody perfect.

I feel like there is so much to talk about in this episode that fandom will be chewing on it for months if not years to come. Yokey has picked up the characterisations brilliantly, and seems to have an understanding of what the fandom desperately craves in terms of Castiel, his character, his personality and his development. I adored his sass in this episode. Some other writers *cough*bucklemming*cough* struggle to really capture Castiel’s sass and humour. Showing their lack of understanding of Castiel’s persona and his intelligence and instead writing him in a way that is jarring and sometimes basically stupid. Castiel is far from stupid. In this episode he was written perfectly, in a way I haven’t seen since Edlund’s time. Is that a sweeping statement? Maybe. But I’m still riding my high so let me have it this time.

This episode gave us three of my favourite things. Badass and Sassy Castiel, Overprotective grumpy husband Dean, and poor long suffering brother Sam. (baring in mind this is how they are usually written in fanfiction nowadays this is exactly my jam and I am so so happy to see it play out on screen. Seriously who sold their soul to Crowley for this episode?)

This review will also be in two parts. Because I have so freaking much to say about it.

The first part will focus on destiel, the second on everything else including Castiel’s emotional arc (as separate from destiel), his relationships with angels, angels and gender and Lily Sunder’s character.

From time to time, I see teens on tumblr questioning why 30+ year-olds or even 20+ year-olds are still in the fandom, and it never ceases to baffle me - not only because some people apparently consider it acceptable to teach perfect strangers what to do and what not to do in their free time, but also because such attitude is a polar opposite to my own fandom experience.

The first fandom I joined was populated exclusively by teens, at least at the websites I used to frequent back then. Then, at the age of 15, I joined the Harry Potter fandom (I’ve read the books and watched the first films much earlier, but I had no interest in consuming or producing HP fan content prior to that). And I discovered that there were many, many women (not only women, of course, but still mostly women) in their thirties, in their fourties, and even older, who participated actively in the life of fandom. It was an absolute surprise for me. And a wonderful one.

Because, you see, the 15-year-old me was terrified of a great number of things, including growing up. In particular, I was scared of becoming, you know… too adult. Or at least what I perceived as “adult” back then. Too serious, not wanting to have any hobbies that are too “childish”, thinking only about work or household or other “respectable” issues. Not writing anymore, not creating anymore, not feeling inspiration anymore. I was pretty sure that this is what being a grown-up looks like. You have to abandon the things that are not practical or not profitable or not universally accepted and encouraged. You have to become serious.

And then there are these women - lovely, talented women. Women twice my age, women old enough to be my mothers, women who actually have children of my age. Women who work and have family and still manage to have fun and do what makes them happy. Their example showed me that being an adult does not mean being boring, that you’re never too old to write stories about your favourite characters, that you can be both a successful professional and a fanartist or a fic writer. That no one is doomed to become a boring person. That “when you grow up, your heart dies” is complete bullshit. I’m sorry, I like The Breakfast Club, but this is bullshit. The older I become, the older my fandom buddies become, the clearer I see it.

I am 23 now. I am still grateful to those people who showed me that I need not fear growing up. So it is really strange for me to see teens here saying such things. Are they sure that they will not want to be in the fandom anymore when they grow up? Are they planning to quit their fandoms as soon as they turn 20/30/etc.? And if they actually are planning to do so - why do they think that there is such a necessity? Adults are not robots.

To all the wonderful Aria is A theorists that I spent years following with fascination, you guys came up with some amazing theories that no matter what happens in this shitty finale, you guys will always be my favourite. <3 I think if you had written the show, I am sure Aria is A could have been the most amazing reveal EVER. I am heart broken after Marlene’s interview where she said Aria does not have an MPD. Why would they have put so many clues about that in her scenes for it to mean nothing?  I am just so upset… and I know they are just theories and PLL is just a show, but I spent an emberassing amount of time obsessing over Aria is A theorists and waited anxiously for my favourite bloggers to post new things.  I am saying goodbye because I lost complete faith. But I also want to awknowledge everyone who ever did theories on all the characters, you were all seriously soooo convincing.  I am amazed by the level of intelligence I was reading, it’s too bad the actual writers clearly never had a master piece ending in mind.  I love you pll community! I will miss you all.

anonymous asked:

Okay so you're definitely one of my top fandom crushes. Since you're also a big tastemaker in this community who would you say YOUR fandom crushes are?

Hey anon! So glad I got this ask too, because now I have an excuse to have a little love fest over here. And thank you for calling me your crush, I’m blushing! Yet I have to say that - GOD - I’m sure I’m not a tastemaker for anyone…:)

I have so many crushes here in our Outlander fandom that it’s probably borderline criminal. I have a big heart where all the baes go to live.

I need to get the Queen herself, the Master Life Ruiner, @gotham-ruaidh out of the way. She was the first person I ever talked to in here, has been a relentless support and a true friend. Besides, she showed me by example what an accomplished fanfic writer is and her meta discussions on the books are the best. A very good reason to get myself to NY some day. :)

@westerhos is soulful AF. Also, she is writing what is probably my favourite fanfiction ever - Our Story. It’s brilliant brilliant brilliant. Like “I want-your-autograph-and-maybe-even-stalk-you-for-the-rest-of-my-life” brilliant. Also, she likes out of the box and weird stuff, which is my totally my thing.

@creag-an-fhitich and I call each other dessert names. She really is a GOOD person, one that shines and shines. She is the one that I wished I could hug the most. I love this girl like cray-cray.

@iwanttodriveyouthroughthenight is the homeland bae. Also, Heart Slayer is one of the purest and most funny creatures of the Outlander landscape. When I want to get a summary of the great stuff and have little time, it’s her blog I go to to get my fix.

@suhailauniverse is kind of a soul sister. I get the feeling we are very much alike in lots of things. Also I RESPECT HER SO MUCH as a writer. Her Neighbours AU will go down for the ages as one of the very best. She is witty and sassy AF and I’M HERE FOR THAT.

@notevenjokingrightnow is such a good writer that it blows my mind. Also, she strikes me as someone both humble and hardworking, as well as direct. I find myself nodding while I read her posts quite a lot, which is a sign of her consistency and my lunacy.

@bonnie-wee-swordsman has written some of my favourite ever stuff. Flood my Mornings is the fic I carry on my heart and I’ll duel anyone who dares to say it isn’t better than A LOT of stuff in the books. Besides, she is beautiful, funny, intelligent, caring, loyal and all-round talented. When God gave away his gifts, he winked several times at Bon.

@lenny9987 is an extraordinary writer and a source of so much knowledge that I always feel in awe of her. Very much so. She has an approach on life and literature that I enjoy so much.

@outlanderedandoverhere gives me hope in humanity. She is so…good. Like on a fundamental level. Master Seamstress puts dreams and fabrics together alike. I have so much admiration and love for her.

@takemeawaytocamelot is lovely and kind. Besides, her Exes AU (IMMA GET TO THAT DRABBLE NEXT) is a piece that was missing from my soul.

@sapphiresassenach which is a woman of convictions, that proudly stands for the things she believes in. Besides, she is a marvellous writer and SHE HAS A HAMMOCK.

@tammywt shows me everyday that compassion and caring for strangers is possible. She always has a kind word, an advice, an encouragement to give. She truly cares and I crush hard on that.

@danielledreamsthedayaway has some of the best quotes and pictures around. Thanks to her I get all the purrrrty. And @yellowfeather84 and @saint-hildegard-of-bingen are masters on Outlander bits, besides their calm and wise input seems pretty spot on on a consistent level.

@mibasiamille is a new crush. We are on that phase where I think she is the love of my life and pretty much perfect lol. She is such a finished writer for her age and her bubbly personality gives me life.

Last but not least (I’m sure I’m missing someone, GOD OH GOD, I’M SORRY), I crush hard on all the people, namely anons, that come to my inbox to give me love. To tell me their ideas, thoughts, feelings. And all the people that comment and with whom I’ve had such interesting discussions. They keep me going, even when it would be easier to stop. They really are the best. <3

T100 is a dark show but I feel Jason is so focused on trying to shook the audience that he's forgetting the biggest strength of this show, the main characters and love. Don't you think so? What's the point to make Jasper's death so dramatic if it's not going to affect his friends at all? and Clarke wanted to save them but she hasn't connected with them since the last interactions of s2. It's a kind of mess imo. I wish they'd start writing consistent relationships and plots about fighting to live

I don’t entirely agree with this, nonny.

I don’t think that Jason has at all forgotten what the heart of the story is and if anything should be an indication of that it should be Praimfaya, of all episodes, one of the two Jason wrote this season. It focused basically exclusively on our delinquents heading to space, and then very briefly on Octavia (also a delinquent, I might add). THAT’S the heart of the show. That relationship among the delinquents, those characters we’ve grown to love? That’s always been the endgame Jason has been striving for season after season.

Which means that they can’t be together all the time. And, yes, they have to go on individual journeys, and struggle, and that’s the point. Because they are stronger together. But our characters can’t be strong all the time, they can’t always be with the people who complete them, who make them a perfect unit.

Why not, you ask? Because if they were always with those people, they would never grow. If they have everything they need, they would never learn to evolve on their own.

It’s the same idea with separating Bellarke so that Bellamy can develop his head-side without Clarke, and Clarke can develop her heart-side without Bellamy. They can’t be interdependent all the time, because the truth of the matter is that in the universe of The 100, there’s never a guarantee that they’ll have that person at their side. People die, they leave (something we’re a little too familiar with in the Bellarke fandom after 2x16 …).

Then what?

Then, our characters grow. On their own. And once they’ve gone through their individual journey, they come together and they kick even more ass than before.

That’s kind of how it goes every season isn’t it? (With the exception of perhaps Season 1 where the sets and the budget was smaller, and they were introducing all the main characters/plot/relationships so it made sense to keep everyone so shuttered in together for the majority of the season.) Our characters work together for parts of the season, then they split up to go on their individual journeys, and then they come together again in the finale and kick ass as a team.

In Season 2, it started with all our characters separated, working to get to each other. They reunited in the first half of the season, created a battle strategy, and then separated to go through their own character journeys. Bellamy embarked into Mount Weather on his redemption arc to save his friends (simplifying the depth of his arc, obviously, but that’s not the point of this post). Clarke fell into her downward spiral as she took advice from L.exa. Jasper had to learn to become a leader in his own right. Raven struggled to come to terms with her new disability and pain. Octavia started training with Indra as a warrior. Murphy was off on his adventure with Jaha.

… See the trend?

Our heroes were all working together towards a common goal - defeat the Mountain (Murphy excluded) - but they were also struggling within themselves. It makes for interesting TV.

And then what happens in the Season 2 finale? They all end up in Mount Weather, working with and alongside each other using the lessons they’ve learned over the course of the season, in order to save their people.

What were huge themes of Season 2? Finding their family again - lots of reunions. The fight to see their friends/family again, to save them. What happens when you push away the people you love …

Because those themes: found family, love, and the things people will do to keep those things alive … THAT’S the heart of the show. And it hasn’t changed.

Then in Season 3, we spend the first half of the season with everyone isolated and struggling with their inner demons. Clarke struggling to face her people, Bellamy struggling to save them at whatever cost, Raven struggling with her pain, Jasper struggling with his PTSD, Monty struggling with stifling his own trauma while holding up his own family (Hannah and Jasper), Murphy struggling to survive on his own (like always … until Emori comes along), Octavia struggling to find her place in the world (struggling with Lincoln, with Bellamy, with Indra) and NONE of them sharing any of these things (for the most part) with each other.

And, yes, it was dark. And depressing and heavy and disheartening to watch sometimes. But that was the POINT. Season 2 was the descent into hell. 3A was hell itself, and 3B and Season 4 was our heroes rising from the ashes.

And sure enough, our main delinquents reunited in 4x11 and for the last six episodes of the season, it was all about them working together, piecing themselves back together, working towards a common goal as a team. In 3x16, we had Clarke going into the City of Light with Monty and Raven, Harper, etc working from Arkadia to help make it possible while Bellamy and Octavia kept her alive from the outside. It was a group effort. It involved all three elements for them to succeed in defeating ALIE.

What was a huge theme of Season 3? To put it simply, “together”. It was about showing our heroes and how they fall apart when they isolate themselves, and how they are stronger when they come together.

That’s always been the theme of the show, and - contrary to what many believe - the writers didn’t just drop that theme in Season 3. They took a dark approach to it, revealed an extremely grim perspective on the human condition, what happens to us when we fall down and there is no one there to pick us up, and people didn’t like that. But it doesn’t change the fact that the endpoint they were always building up to was our mains working together, stronger than before, in the end of the season.

Same thing in Season 4: they started off working together, they split up for awhile in the middle to embark on their own character arcs, and finally came together in the final few episodes to survive - together.

I think that ever since 3A, people have been stuck in this mindset that - just because they separated our favs from each other - that the writers don’t know what they’re doing. That they’re forgetting their own story, that they don’t realize what their fans want to see.

What I have to say to that is this: you listen to the anti’s too much. That is not the story the writers are telling. It never has been, and anyone who is ACTUALLY convinced that the writers are way up L.exa’s ass haven’t been paying attention. Appearing as a guest star in sixteen episodes does NOT make a show. And if it did, ADC would have been signed on as a regular before FTWD jumped.

I have no doubt Jason is well aware of where the heart of the show is and if anything is an indication of that, it is the finales he has written every single season. Each one consistently focusing on our delinquents working together to save the world. THAT’S the story he is telling. And I feel like a broken record, but I really can’t express this enough.

What’s the point to make Jasper’s death so dramatic if it’s not going to affect his friends at all?

I’m not going to argue with you about Jasper’s death because Jasper’s character arc is such a disappointment to me and I wish (oh god DO I WISH) it was handled in a way better way. I wish he had chosen to live, I wish Season 4 wasn’t just some long drawn out death sentence for him carried out from the Season 3 finale. I wish Jason could have thought of a better way for his character to continue to exist on the show, but that didn’t happen. And it sucks. And Jasper was my second favourite character (after Bellamy, loml) and I’m upset about it. And he was such good PTSD rep and they could have done amazing things with him.

I really feel like Jason had his mind set on killing Jasper in Season 3 but decided that would be too much, but never actually planned out another character arc for Jasper to have where he chooses to live instead. In his mind, Jasper’s story was over before Season 4 even began. Sometimes that happens with writers. They write themselves into a dead-end or they can’t think of another story that works for a character so instead of choosing the storyline where Jasper decides to live, he chose the alternate - darker - one where Jasper doesn’t recover from his trauma … and his story ends in tragedy.

It’s not the story I would have told, and I wish the way the characters on these shows responded to suicide was something other than saying, “you’re a coward”, but I’m not one for censoring what stories other artists choose to tell. They chose to write the dark one. Really, all that I can do is be sad and bitter and wish that the writers decided on a different character arc.

But they didn’t.

That still doesn’t mean that the writers have lost sight of what this story is about, though.

It’s still about the delinquents. It’s still about the theme of “together”. It’s still about life and hope and, yes, some of our characters die along the way or lose their path but - ultimately - in the end, this story is about family.

We don’t know for certain that Jasper has been forgotten, that he won’t be remembered. There are still those flashbacks Jason promised, and they always do callbacks to previous seasons. Yes, I wish we got more of a reaction out of characters like Clarke and Raven (grrr… still bitter over what could have been) and OCTAVIA, but I chalk that all down to being another problem to pile on top of all the other issues with Season 4 that could have been resolved with three extra episodes.

The writers took on too much in one season and they didn’t have enough episodes to tell it properly. Pacing was an issue, and a lot of things got cut or weren’t fleshed out as much as I would have liked because of it - including the response to Jasper’s death.

The writers just didn’t allocate themselves enough time for those emotional beats… and it’s annoying, but there’s really nothing that can be done about it at this point.

I find that most of the problems with storytelling on this show have much less to do with the actual story itself, and more to do with the pacing. This particular instance is no exception.

Clarke wanted to save them but she hasn’t connected with them since the last interactions of s2.

Clarke has pretty much always been kind of distant from most of her friends, with the exception of pretty much only Bellamy. I mean, hell, she even started the show in isolation. This has always been her struggle. Valuing her head over her heart (and sometimes sacrificing her relationships in the process). I thought that the way we ended Season 4, with Clarke waiting every day to reunite with her friends, never giving up hope … that bodes very well for that long-drawn out arc of Clarke holding herself apart from her friends to finally reach some sort of resolution. I’m very excited for where her arc is going next season, and I think the writers are well aware of Clarke’s tendency to isolate herself.

It’s being addressed.

I wish they’d start writing consistent relationships and plots about fighting to live

Sorry, disagree. They’re already writing those things.

This show has consistently been about our characters’ fight for survival. Isn’t that basically the premise of the show? Fighting to live? Say what you want about everything else about the show, but I’ve always felt that part was pretty consistent.

As for consistent relationships … I think most of the relationships we’re invested in HAVE been consistent. They spend time developing the relationships that are most important to the audience. Like Bellamy and Clarke, Abby and Raven, Monty and Jasper (while it ends tragically), the Blakes (as dysfunctional as they are, I don’t feel like it’s really developed unnaturally for how their dynamic started off and evolved), Kane and Abby, Memori, etc, etc.

I must be reading the show differently than a lot of people because I feel that many are disappointed, thinking that the writers have lost sight of the show they first set out to be, but I disagree. The show has evolved, matured, and gotten more complex. Our characters have grown, they’re older, and they’ve changed. As a result, the relationships have too. But our core relationships on the show? Those have always been front and center, and our delinquents have always been the focus of each resolution to every season.

We haven’t lost that many of our main delinquents. Jasper and Finn - that’s basically it. Think how many Grounders we’ve lost? How many other characters who aren’t Sky People? Anya, L.exa, Roan, Ilian, Luna, Lincoln, Maya, etc … These characters - as much as we may love some of them - are supporting characters.

The delinquents are less expendable, and when you actually start cracking down on numbers, it shows that the writers don’t view them as being unimportant in the way that many “fans” would have you believe.

This is a way longer response than I intended on ever writing, so I’m just going to wrap it up here. I think my opinion has been expanded on more than enough.

the-girl-wh0-waited  asked:

So, I got an ask today asking me what I would do if I was a PLL writer. So, now I'm interested in other people's ideas. If you were a PLL writer what would happen? (storylines, deaths, etc) What would you make different?

I love this question!! I don’t have an idea of what the whole storyline would be but my storyline would differ like this:

  • Aria is Uber A: This was the first theory that I really fell in love with. I love the idea of one of the 4 main girls being twisted enough to torture themselves and their friends. This type of betrayal is right up my alley! I don’t know what her back story would be, though.
  • Ezria playing the game together: I loved Ezra’s story arc in season 4 and Ian played that evil side of him so well and I can only imagine how insane he would be if he were the villain of the show.
  • Extending the doll house storyline: The writers had the potential to make this storyline incredible but instead they rushed it in two episodes. I would have a decent amount of episodes taking place in the doll house and I would also show all the torturous things -A did to the girls (without any boundaries!).
  • Include a Halloween episode in every season: These were some of my favourite episodes of the whole series. I’m still upset that season 4′s was the last one. I would include these in all seasons because it makes the gap between each season more bearable.
  • More mystery, way less romance!
  • Reveal A to the audience before the girls find out: I loved the way the show did this with the Toby and Ezra reveal. It made every single scene with these two characters exciting from that point on so I would do this with the ultimate reveal and not advertise it so it completely shocks and surprises people (but there would be a catch with that reveal! which I explain further down).
  • Kill one of the main 4 girls once they get too close to figuring out the truth: I would have this episode a couple episodes earlier than the finale. This would set the tone for a finale that I would make absolutely terrifying.
  • Have the villian win: I don’t know how this could be pulled off, but I would love it if there was a way to change the way people see the show after the finale in a daring and shocking way. I would love it if Aria double crossed Ezra and he goes to jail. The audience thinks all is well until the camera takes them to Aria with an evil smirk in her lair and there is an internal monologue explaining what she did. People then realise they had been wrong about Uber A.
  • Include an episode from -A point of view and see how and WHY they did everything. I think this would work if the villain wins in the end and this could be a bonus episode after the finale?

I have no idea if all this would even work in a storyline but I find them very interesting lol! Overall, I would make the tone of the show much, much darker.

Sorry for answering this late. :( I wanted to think about the question for a while before answering it!

Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day

I’ve wanted to do one of these posts for a long time so here I finally am with what I hope is the first one of several, and the person I chose for the occasion is none other than one of my all-time favourite writers of any sort of fiction: @fadewithfury

Fadewithfury’s writing is as flawless as her ideas. She has the ability of making me interested in anything, she could literally publish half of her grocery list and I’ll be at her askbox asking about progress on the next part in mere minutes.
I actually started watching Secret Diary of a Call Girl only so I could take the most out of her brilliant Hardy/Hannah fics (as I expected, the characterization was perfect)

The first work of hers I read was Bring Down The Sky and it didn’t take me long to realize I had to read every other piece of text of hers I could find, so I did (almost. I’m currently halfway through Temporal Obscura and I’m loving every word). Fics that are noticeably better (and not “as good” or “alternatively brilliant”) than the thing they’re based on are rare in my opinion, however I think even the creators of Somewhere in Time would agree that Elsewhere deserves a film of its own more, and Touching Wild Light  is simply one of the best things I have ever read in my entire life.

Every fic of hers is my favourite and even though I’ve commented on some of them, and left compliments (anonymously and not) in her askbox before, I feel terrible for not showing my love for her work more often.

She’s not only a brilliant writer, but also an amazing person, blogger and artist (seriously though please do yourself a favour and go see all her art right now!). This could’ve easily been a “Human Appreciation Post”. So believe me when I tell you you haven’t lived until you’ve read Love Letters at night in bed for the billionth time, or accidentally missed your tram stop because you were too immersed on Here For You, forgotten why it’s Chris Chibnall writing Alec Hardy  and not the author of Where Oceans Meet a few chapters in said fic, or experienced the utter joy of seeing a writing update on her blog.

Happy Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day! Thank you so much for all your hard work. Please never stop writing.

I just found out about Natural 20 and I can't believe I never saw this before! It's an amazing series, and I'm halfway through. I was just wondering, do you imagine your character in the series to be touch-averse? Just kind of a vibe that I got. Anyways, love your work, and I'm really happy to find something that you act in besides VA stuff. Don't get me wrong, you're an amazing VA, and The Bright Sessions is my favourite podcast, but it's really cool to see your physical acting abilities!

YES. Oh my god, this message makes me so happy because no one has ever picked up on that before. It was something that developed somewhat organically in the process of filming the show and then it became a thing where the writer and producers and I decided to have a moment in each episode where someone tries to touch Alara and she reacts. Alara is sort of the most socially adept person in that group so none of them pick up on it and the fact that some of them try to connect through touch, the one social interaction she does not do, was always bringing a degree of conflict to her interactions.

That show is all about people mis-communicating and getting in each other’s way, so I really enjoyed finding those moments in each episode with the other actors. And, this probably goes without saying but this was not any kind of commentary on people who are touch averse in real life - there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that and I can’t imagine how frustrating it would be to live with that and have people try and touch you all the time. But having Alara, who is always in control, not able to control the people around her gave me a lot of good tension to play with.

For those of you completely lost by this post, I was in a web series about a D&D group - watch here!

7, 16, 48?

7 - Writer I trust enough to read whatever they write?

Leigh Bardugo, definitely. I really liked the Grisha Trilogy, but the Six of Crows duology is my favourite! How can you not love the squad, even Matthias the grumpy yellow tulip? ;)

16 - Tv shows I always recommend?

GAME OF THRONES (season seven’s coming and I’m hysteric). But I haven’t met anyone personally who’s into it, so thank god for tumblr. I also would 10/10 recommend Riverdale, Stranger Things and Outlander.

48 - Top five blogs on Tumblr that I follow?

Only five?? I have a list of at least twenty. Umm ok, if I don’t mention you, don’t feel bad, it’s just because I’m currently sleep-deprived and can’t remember anything.

I appreciate the ask, thank you!

The Typewriter series shows book titles by my favourite authors that spell out the name of the writer. The first in the series is Neil Gaiman, author of such great books as Anansi Boys, American Gods, Good Omens, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Fragile Things, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, Smoke and Mirrors, Neverwhere and Stardust.

Mina’s Monday Recs

Wow, what a week! There has been so much loveliness coming out of the fandom creatively in the last seven days. And since I’ve become sick of adulting, I decided to this a bit earlier instead :) (Of course, this rec list is – as it always is – based on my shipping preferences, and lately, as will soon become obvious, I’ve been on a bit of a Nyssa kick. Not to mention I have needed smut like I need air, which is also reflected in my choices for this week.)

Do you Take This Man? (NSFW) by yespleasehawkeye (Olicity) – AHHHH. So much smutty goodness in this fic, seriously. One thing I can never get enough of is the physicality between Oliver and Felicity when they’re established – I just think that their interactions have a different kind of sensuality to them when they’re kind of familiar with each other physically. (Like when Oliver is just casually touching Felicity under the table while they’re eating, lol.) And, of course, the fact that it’s set during Thea and Roy’s wedding (two of my OTPs for the price of one! :D) just makes this even more enjoyable. I love the lazy feel to this fic, and the way they keep going back to the dance floor again and again. Definitely one I will be rereading. :)

Carpe Diem by agentsofmariahill (Nyssara and hints of Black Assassin) – whoa. I will preface this by saying that there really isn’t nearly enough femmeslash fic out there, and there is nowhere near enough Nyssa fic either. So the fact that this is both is a bonus, for me. I love the way the author explored the different facets of Nyssa’s character – the way her father trained her, the way she slowly started questioning her sexuality, her beautiful relationship with Sara and her budding friendship with Laurel. Even if you’ve never read a Nyssa-centric fic before, I urge you to check this one out. It’s amazing.

Tantric (NSFW) by lostolicityscenes (Olicity) – HOT DAMN. I am a sucker for road trip smut, and this was gorgeous. I love the poetic style and the way Oliver and Felicity kind of find each other, physically and mentally. I love that kind of discovery between them and how the physicality between them, while losing its novelty, never loses its thrill. And what gets me is that this fic doesn’t have a word of dialogue in it, but it doesn’t need to. In fact, the silence is kind of what makes this story so sexy. <3

It is not in the Stars (NSFW) by kaleidoscopes-and-carousels (Nyssara) – GIVE ME ALL THE NYSSARA SEXYTIMES PLEASE. Wow. What an amazing homage to one of my OTPs, set during the end of season 2 when Sara returns to Nyssa and asks for the League’s help. I think this fic sums up perfectly, for me, Sara’s mindset when she decided to break things off with Oliver – that this was never about not wanting to be with Nyssa and was far more about unwilling to face the darkness inside herself.

Strange Birds by darhkfelicity (Olicity with Laulicity friendship) – I will never, ever, ever get enough of the Laulicity friendship, and this fic is such a lovely homage to what has become one of my favourite ever girl-power!friendships on Arrow. I love how their early interactions in canon are addressed here, the way Sim dips into both my darlings’ minds and shows how they slowly become friends. And I adore the way this extends beyond the Olicity road trip while also working in details of some of the new spoilers we’ve been getting for season 4.

Sensations of Survival (NSFW) by arrow-through-my-writers-block (Olicity) – ahhh, I am such a sucker for smangst, and this is a wonderful one. Set the night that Oliver defeated Ra’s (I think?), it has some of my favourite things in it, including SHOWER SEX and apologies and pain and did I mention shower sex? :D There is something almost cathartic about reading this that I adore, and there is such a gorgeous introspective and quiet feel to it that is also ridiculously hot and something that I just can’t get enough of. Definitely my favourite by this author.

So, I found this waterfall by thevegantargaryen (Nyssara) – I love Nyssara fics that are set during the flashback years, and this is an excellent one. There is so much emotion and hotness packed into what is actually quite a short piece, but it doesn’t seem to be from how beautifully it is written. Both Nyssa and Sara talk about their dreams, about leaving, exploring the world, and the way that is inexplicably linked with their exploration of each other sinceriously tugs at my heartstrings and makes me ache for these two. <3

Wanderers by susannahmccormick (Olicity) – yayyyy, more road trip fic! :) Sus does such a great job with this series, and I am loving in particular the section about Oliver and Felicity’s mountain hike. AND THE PUPPIES. Oh God. I really like the domesticity about them – not only does it perfectly fit into what Stephen and Emily have been saying lately about how Oliver and Felicity have changed while on their road trip, but there is something so ridiculously endearing about Oliver thinking about holding a barbecue and wanting to do up the house and all sorts.

And then I found this delightful tag fic (picture is NSFW) by effie214 which kind of speculates on what Oliver and Felicity would be like their first night back in Starling. And as always, Effie’s way with words leaves me speechless, because I can totally feel Felicity’s conflicting emotions about being back, and about wanting to hold onto the comfortable oblivion of their road trip. And THE PANCAKES. I love it when Oliver cooks breakfast for Felicity. For obvious reasons. :D

I also came across this gorgeous Olicity graphic by waschal – I LOVE the angel wings on Oliver (I can’t help but interpret that to be a reference to the fact that the Arrow is Starling’s guardian angel <3) and the pretty colouring and the infinity sign around the arrow. I could probably write an essay about how much I love the symbolism of this, but I’ll stop there, lol.

Then there’s this beauty by captainolicitysbedroom, which was made for supersillyanddorky06’s fic, The Firebird (which I’ll admit I haven’t had a chance to read yet, but Matty is an excellent writer and I know, having read several of her other fics, that this one is as good as anything she writes). Plus, I love any art that feature’s Al-Saheem, because of reasons. ;)

I may have shrieked a little when I saw this lovely Laurel Lance graphic by blackprettybird, too. WOW. What a gorgeous homage to my pretty bird. I love the monochrome and the way the city is reflected – I think some people forget that when Oliver was off in Nanda Parbat, Laurel had to look after Starling on her own, with only Nyssa by her side. This is a wonderful reminder of that. <3

And my graphic rec list would be incomplete without this absolutely heartbreaking Nyssara edit by cherrychapssstick, which made me feel SO MANY EMOTIONS. I love the shattered glass effect and how it reflects the fragmented nature of Nyssa and Sara’s relationship. So dark and achingly beautiful. AH.

And then, because I love Black Assassin both platonically and romantically, here are a couple of lovely videos that are dedicated to the wonderful pairing that is Laurel and Nyssa. There’s this one by wondertwinc, which goes ever so slightly AU in that they’re actually together. And wow, do they have great chemistry! I will forever love the milkshake scene, and the scene in 3x16 where Laurel agrees to let Nyssa train her, and the part where Nyssa said the last few weeks with Laurel had brought her happiness. Nothing makes me happier than two badass ladies supporting the hell out of each other, saving each other and having a beautiful friendship (and, in this video, something more). This video is certainly one I will rewatch. Again and again.

The second video is by vigilantelawyers, which I also adore and which made me fall in love with the pairing even more. What an apt song choice, and with a lovely selection of clips from the show, too. I think we see here how Nyssa has mentored Laurel in training her, but also how protective Laurel is of Nyssa – to the point that she says she doesn’t want to lose her after everyone else she’s lost. Also, I don’t know if there’s a technical name for this, but I love how at one point there is two of Nyssa and then later there is two of Laurel. It looks super cool and just makes this video even more gorgeous. :D

That’s it from me! I know this week has been Nyssa-heavy, but hey, she’s a cool character and I love her to pieces. You know the drill – if you liked anything on this list, be sure to let the creators of these wonderful fanworks know. Reblog their work. Give kudos. Leave comments. Leave a lovely message in their askbox telling them how much their fic/edit/video made your day.

In other words, spread positivity so all the hardworking people who give so much to the fandom get something back. Thanks, and see you next week! :)

(And graphic artists, I’ve linked to your works, but if you want me to take down the actual images, I am happy to do so. Just shoot me an ask. :))

anonymous asked:

What are your favorite things about Michael Emerson? His best attributes in your opinion.

oh anon…where do i even start?? there’s too much to say about this!

above all my favourite thing about michael is that he seems soooooo freakin nice. i’ve had a lot of celeb crushes and from all of my extensive stalking research he sounds like he’s the nicest, sweetest, kindest, most friendly, least problematic, most humble, grateful and generous one of them all. people who’ve worked with him from fellow stars to volunteers at comic con have said he’s just the greatest and the loveliest. according to fans he’s approachable, kind, friendly (see the recent fan post in his tag but there are endless accounts of the same kindness and friendliness) and always has time for them even if he’s walking his dog or on the train or out with carrie. (he’s even nice to paparazzi and those annoying tmz guys).

just look at him taking time out of his day to give these lost fans/tourists directions in hawaii in this video. he’s so focused on the task it’s adorable

and look at how his poi castmates feel about him

also just scroll through his twitter feed and you’ll see most of his tweets are shout outs to other people like small theatre companies, student radio stations, little-known writers and artists he likes, other tv shows. he’s always complimenting everyone else lol it’s adorable

and aside from being in an ad advocating aids research he and carrie also made this video for lgbt rights in like 2009 or something and posed for noh8

apart from his niceness which is my NUMBER ONE FAVOURITE thing about michael emerson my number two favourite thing is how much he loves his wife. there’s soooooo many examples of their cuteness that make me die but i think the best example of how much he loves her is in this video from :54

other things i love about him: he’s extremely talented as an actor and as an artist, he’s funny, he’s cute and sometimes a bit shy, and a big dorkhe has a super eclectic taste in music just like me, he’s dapper af and he’s sexy as hell

then there’s this pic

oh and his dog’s adorable

i’m sorry for the essay! but really i could go on and on and on about him lol

Everything above this man is so adorable, his hands and his face especially when he wants to answer the press questions comprehensively but trying hard not to reveal things the writers ask him not to.

Q: So what’s Edward Nygma like?

A: He’s an asshole [laughs]…he’s amazing, I just want more scenes with Ed Nygma, because the dynamic between Oswald and Edward is one of my favourite ones I’ve played so far on the show … There’s electricity there …

I'm worried that April will take a backseat in this Jaggie storyline. Fine Jackson has feelings for Maggie and they'll pursue a relationship but I want someone for April and I want her to be happy.

I’m worried too anon- something tells me this jaggie thing will be more about japril than jackson, because the writers can’t just let it go now, can they. And I hate that we will most likely see april getting hurt and angsty and having no friends to turn to since apparently the show decided once more to deprive her of friends (Kepzona used to be so good…). I want more kepzona, and ak2, and I want april to be friends with Jo because that moment when jo called her badass for yelling at maggie was my favourite moment of the whole season.

As for april getting a new love interest, I hope they don’t just come up with Matthew#2. The love interests are always plain characters perfectly tailored to the other’s needs and it’s annoying. Not more annoying than Maggie, but still ennerving. I hope they pair her up with someone already on the show (*bad kermit in my head*: aLEX ALEX ALEX) with who she can have her own thing- something light and breezy that’ll give her an opportunity to explore new relationships with people she isn’t awkward with. I’m thinking of viable options and there’s obviously Alex, Cross (hum…might be…interesting? very weird choice for april but still at least he has a personality), Deluca (I HATE him so noo)…I think that’s about it. But if they decide to create a love interest just for her I hope they build a strong basis like they did with Jolex. Idc what people say, Jo is a round character and has been since her first ep.

Sherlock: The Final Problem - rant

I am so glad I watched the last episode of Sherlock in the cinema in a great company as it gave me some resemblance of enjoyment of this shitty episode. It felt like I was watching a compilation of ‘highlights’ instead of a full episode, which would explain why there were so many plotholes and loose ends. I mean, it is kind of entertaining if you don’t think much about what you are watching but the moment you start processing, it hits you with how absolutely dreadful it is. And even Mrs Hudson hoovering cannot save the mess it is. I mean, I am quite impressed that Moffat managed to combine every single one of his flaws as a writer into one episode, from prolonged exposition, leaps of logic, inability to let dead characters just go, and cliches… cliches everywhere.. oh, and things are true just because we say so - this must be my favourite one, why show that someone is clever when you can just say they are, or explain how this mind control thing works when you can just say it does. what a great way to tell a story! Oh dear…

Before I start the list of the thoughts that went through when watching the episode, I should really mention that I really liked the performances, especially Molly, Moriarty, Mycroft and johnlock.

Despite the fact I sort of enjoyed watching it with a great audience, I still had some pretty “ranty” thoughts:

1. It’s all about Mary? Why?

2. So when will the film start?

3. It had no information that I found remotely interesting, nothing about creation of Mary as the character, no comparison with the books, nothing about her relationship with John, Sherlock and others. How pointless!

1. How are they doing the paintings crying blood? Oh, ok. I guess I’ll never know.

2. So he wasn’t properly shot. OK. But the psychologist + family were still dead somewhere in the cupboard or whatever of that house. How has Mycroft not been informed about dead bodies found in a place Sherlock was picked up from an episode earlier. He was watching his every step so this is just bizarre.

3. Oh, exposition. Great! It’s a sign of a truly wonderful storytelling when you have a character just sit and explain someone else’s backstory for 5 min.. Riveting.
