jeon jungkook | he didn’t know he could love someone this much, after you. | 1,346 words | unadulterated fluff. | for this request.
I was inspired by the song isn’t she lovely by stevie wonder, covered by ohhyuk which you can find here.
“How does she look, Kookie?” “Hyung… are babies supposed to be this angry?”
You blink with tired eyes, body slumped against the hospital bed from the extraneous last few hours. Your mind was in a pleased and tired haze, the feeling of finally having released who you’d been giving shelter to for the last nine months such an overwhelming achievement that you could hardly stop the smile on your face. But you did, if only to secretly listen to your husband at your bedside, absolutely beaming.
Park Jimin is on speakerphone, having just put his own little ones to bed a half hour ago. He had expressed his regret at not being there for the birth, but Jungkook and you had made it very clear that you both understood he had his own duties to adhere to. You didn’t blame him one bit, and with the company of the rest of the boys, you had more than enough love around you at the time. Some had been screaming or uncomfortably laughing (Taehyung, Hoseok), some had been fawning over how beautiful childbirth was (Namjoon, Jin), and some had been preoccupied with taking pictures of the beautiful mother (Yoongi), that was, until you threatened to crush his lens with your bare hands. He had quickly resigned himself to the cafeteria and asked that Namjoon text when you were finally asleep so he could return safely.
But even if they had all been massive pains at some point during your birth, you couldn’t have asked for better cheerleaders.
“Yeah, Kookie. In fact, I’d be worried if she wasn’t angry.” You can hear Jimin laugh through the speaker phone, and you fight the urge to giggle when Jungkook lets out a heavy, relieved sigh; his hair is sweaty at the ends and the chocolate strands curl against his forehead shining with a sheen of sweat. His green bomber had been tossed across the room in his haste to get you both here after your water broke, leaving him in just the tight black tee and sweatpants he had managed to pull on straight out of a disrupted nap. The moment you had told him that the baby was coming, his mind had snapped into another mode completely. You hadn’t seen him move that fast since he’d woken up late on your wedding day.
Jungkook shifts the phone pressed between his shoulder and ear and looks down at the babbling angel in his arms, her chubby fingers reaching for one of Jungkook’s many dangling necklaces in hopes that she could yank it off. Jungkook scolds her lightly with a soft tap to her knuckles, and she makes a noise at him that has him laughing into the phone, “Now she just keeps getting mad at me. I think she’s going to be trouble as a teenager.”
“Like you were?” You hear Jimin ask, and you can almost hear the raised eyebrow in his voice.
“I was a good boy!” Jungkook huffs, his voice louder than it had been since he’d been handed your child. When he realizes this, he looks down at your daughter with an apologetic look and whispers something sweet to her, “sorry honey,” and then focuses on Jimin once more, “but like I said, I was a good boy. It’s (Y/N)’s mean nature that she inherited.”
You can barely resist the urge in kicking his foot propped on the edge of your hospital bed, but you know you’d disturb the baby in his arms, so you promise yourself you’ll get him when he isn’t indirectly using your daughter as a shield next time.
Jimin hums, unconvinced, and the sleepiness in his tone starts to seep into the conversation almost instantaneously. You see Jungkook’s expression change from tickled to pitiful, and he quietly moves his leg on the ground up and down, softly rocking your daughter to sleep, “Jimin, you should get some sleep. It’s nearly three in the morning.”
“It’s the life of a stay at home dad, Kookie. I’ll be fine. I’m more worried about (Y/N). How’s the brave warrior holding up?” Jimin inquires. You can’t help smiling at how sweetly he speaks of you, and Jungkook catches the smile almost as soon as you flash it. When he realizes you’ve been awake the whole time, his mouth drops into a tiny, shocked “o”.
Carefully shifting your daughter upright in his arms, he whispers to you, “D’ya want to hold her?”
You’re not strong enough to turn off your side, let alone keep a good grip on your newborn, so you simply shake your head, instead reaching your fingers weakly toward him, “Just wanna kiss her goodnight.”
Jungkook smiles, biting his lip as he carefully maneuvers your daughter toward you, careful as you push yourself up just enough to place a kiss on her forehead, and then Jungkook is peeling back, “She’s doing fine, hyung. It’s about time for her to sleep though, and I’ll have to give the baby to the nurses soon.”
“I’ll check up on you three later, Kook. Heh… I like the sound of that. ‘You three’.” Jimin’s laugh is laced with fatigue, so Jungkook carefully fishes his phone from between his shoulder and ear and brings it to the other side, expertly holding your baby with the other arm like he had practiced on dolls and watermelons for the last nine months.
“Sleep, hyung. I’ll talk to you in a few hours.” Jungkook says, and you hear Jimin hum an affirmative along with a tentative “goodnight”, right before Jungkook hangs up and slips his phone onto the nightstand beside your hospital bed. He looks at you and hums, your daughter almost completely asleep and tucked away into his arm like she was made to cling to his side. You already have an undeniable feeling in your fluttering heart that she’d be a daddy’s girl through and through, and with the way her small hands clench and unclench around his tee shirt and how Jungkook coos quietly, it sends your affection into overdrive. And you aren’t the only one.
Turning his attention to your daughter, Jungkook whispers just loud enough for the two of you to hear in the quiet hospital room, “I’m looking at her, and all I can see is the love we have incarnate. I want to be the best father for her,” he says this glancing at you, wide eyes rimmed with dark circles and nights of unrest that rivaled your own, “I want to be the only father for her.”
You couldn’t always tell what was going on in Jungkook’s mind, only that he tended to think farther ahead than you sometimes. Where you might have been wondering about the colors of your daughter’s new wardrobe, he was wondering what job she might end up with in thirty years. Where you were focused on nursery design, he was preparing himself for the work he’d need to do to make the path for her life easy and sweet.
Jungkook was young, and he was worrisome, but he loved and loved and loved. And you had no doubt in your hazed mind that he would be everything he said he’d be for her and more. You had no doubt that if god forbid something happened to you, he’d be able to care of her enough for the both of you. “Jungkook,” you ask softly, and he stops staring at your daughter for a moment to hum at you, “what are you thinking right now?”
You’d never forget the way those wide eyes turned to slits when he smiled, bitten ruby red lips (from all of the nervous biting he did during the labor process) pulling back to reveal those sets of pearly bunny teeth you could see your daughter inheriting now, and how he spoke with such love and warmth in his voice that you might have melted then and there had you not wanted to keep the memory alive in your mind in crystal detail, “I never thought I could love someone this much, after you.”
Stevie Wonder on accessibility for people with all kinds of bodies and abilities.
“You all can’t read this, huh. You can’t read Braille, nah nah nah nah nah. I just want to say, before saying the winner, we need to make every single thing accessible to every single person with a disability.”
