Miss Eva Ernst/The Grand High Witch: Any questions?

Millie: Madam, what would happen if one of the chocolates we give away was accidentally eaten by a grown-up?

Miss Eva Ernst/The Grand High Witch: Hehehe. Then that’s just too bad for ze grown-up.

Happy Roald Dahl Day!

Today marks the day Roald Dahl would have turned 100 years old! Let’s all take some time today to enjoy his stories, poems, books and movies inspired by his masterful creativity. Cheers to the man that made reading magical for so many of us!

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.

The Witches

Whisper this—The Witches is the only movie on my list that I did not watch in childhood. I finally watched it this year after seeing and being really enamored with the prosthetics of the grand high witch. I’m really glad I finally saw it, but very sad that I never got to enjoy this movie in childhood.

The Witches is an adaptation of the Roald Dahl story of the same name. A coven of witches who just hate little kids devise a plan to turn them all into mice. The leader of this coven is played by Anjelica Huston, who I aspire to be more and more every day. She brings a grandiose presence to the role that shines even through layers of prosthetic.

Apparently Dahl wasn’t a huge fan of the film and found it to be in bad taste—he considered it too frightening and vulgar. I think the film plays out very whimsically myself, but I may be a poor judge of vulgarity, all told.

This will be my last book for #mayreadaboutwitches as it ends today. I didn’t read as much as I wanted to, but I learned a bit through this project and look forward to reading and learning more.
Also, this little witch was given to me a couple years ago for a birthday. I thought I had lost it when I moved, and was sad about it. Weird that I found it during this witchy month.
