the way i see it 17

The way Belle looks at Adam/The Beast

After watching the movie again…. and again.. and again, i started noticing the different ways Belle looks at Adam (Yes, i’m making a point of calling him by his name from now on) and i felt like i needed to make a post (lengthy post) about it.

1. This is the first time Belle sees Adam. She’s shocked, which we all would be, i mean….. He’s a monster!

2. I wanted to point out the change from the first image to this one. At first glance, Belle is shocked, having never seen anything like him before, but in this one she’s terrified. Her father is being taken away from her by this monster and she feels there’s nothing she can do.

3. FIESTY BELLE! We’d seen a little bit of rebellious Belle early on with Gaston, but this is her proper letting loose. You tell him girl!!

4. The moment of hesitation here always catches me for a second. Is this maybe…just maybe, the first time Belle really feels anything towards Adam? Why would she turn around and help him. True, she’s a nice person, but she gives up her only chance at freedom to help this monster she knows nothing about. Could there be an underlying feeling towards him?

5. Here, we see Belle showing something close to care. Like she feels sorry for Adam, or maybe helpless in making things better. Sharing a similar backstory with their mother dying, maybe this is were she first feels a connection towards him.

6. We all loved this moment. I mean, who wouldn’t fall in love at the sight of a library that big? Speaking of love. That pause, ^, If you just look, the way she stares at him is something a bit more than just laughing at his joke. She’s seeing a change in him, a change that she likes, and it looks as though she’s catching herself before she falls too far.

7. Another long look. What could it mean?!

8. ANNNND another one! Someone is starting to like the look of Adam. Even beneath all that hair and claws.

9. Okay we’ve all done this when we’ve been caught staring at someone we like. Come on Belle! You’re making it too obvious.

10. Yes, this is better, do it at a distance when he can’t see you. (Also, I love the new sequence of scenes for this song)

11. “Still, a romance.” We caught that little glance when he was looking away, you cheeky Belle.

12. Okay, now we can get back into the deeper looks. This is sympathy again. Knowing that a whole world has rejected him, she couldn’t help feeling sorry for him.

13. “Let’s go home.” First off, she called it home! Imagine how that makes Adam feel? That she feels his cursed, dark dusty castle is home. I feel like she really means it, that she’s begging him to take her somewhere that she is happy, and that she has good memories of.

14. Okay, the eyebrow lift, how cute is that. Subtle, but it’s like she’s saying, “I scrub up well… yeah.. i know.” (I must say, a little come hither might be hidden in there somewhere)

15. Disbelief. The way she looks around, thinking to herself “Do i want to go?” “Do i want to leave this play that makes me so happy?” “Do i want to leave him?”

16. This turn. She makes it seem as though she thinks she’ll never see Adam again, but she’s already said thank you, so why turn around again? Was there something else she wanted to say? I think so, but maybe she didn’t know how to voice it, how to tell him, because maybe she didn’t really know either.

17. Fear again. She finally lays eyes on him, and she can see he is injured. What if she won’t be able to tell him how she feels?

18. Shock. This is where the Adam is dragging Gaston towards the edge of the castle wall. The last time we saw shock from Belle was the first time she saw Adam. Maybe she feels fear too that he is becoming what they all think he is….a Beast.

19. I think the she feels nothing here. In her arms is the dying body of the man she cares for. The only thing she can do is reasure him. Tell him it will be okay, all the while trying to convince herself.

20. This is desperation. She’s nearly there, she nearly understands what she is feeling, but she is too late and she knows it. She needs him to come back to her, to not leave her alone, not like she left him.

21. The realisation. We all know this moment. When the main character realises they are in love, and they try desperately, to tell the other person, in the hopes it might save them. Disney have done this a few times, one example being back in Tangled when Rapunzel saves Flynn/Eugene with a tear drop of pure love.

22. Shock. Each time Belle sees Adam for the first time in some way, she experiences some sort of shock. She’s unsure of what has happened. (As my brother said, she’s probably thinking “Thank God he’s handsome.”)

23. Relief, happiness, love, amazement. She knows now that she can be happy, she can be with this man she loves. It’s overwhelming, but she knows it is what she’s always wanted.

24. Love. There is nothing but love in that look. She is where she is meant to be, with who she is meant to be with, and she loves it.

Look at the difference. Look at the change over the period they spent together. That…… is Disney.

I see your gay mikael, and raise you.... ace mikael

PSA: i am in no way saying he isn’t or shouldn’t be gay!! I am also not saying all ace folks fit these exact things! I’m just goin off my own experiences as a humble ace!

ok this is the LAST thing im gonna say about this but like. literally i pined for this person in such a weird way for like 2 very formative years (16 and 17) and never spoke to him but we just like made weird eye contact a lot.

and then i didnt see him at ALL for 2 years (bc he was in jail) but i still talked about him a lot? like as a joke basically like haha im so fuckin. idiotic. and then one day when id been awake for 36 hours me and my friends went to this coffee shop id seen him at before and fuckin. JOKINGLY i mentioned maybe we;ll see him

and then we DID and then i literally. talked to him and he knew who i was? and he asked me apropos of nothing if i was a gemini bc. he said his last 4 girlfriends had been geminis. and anyway. it just feels like a fucking bizarre fever dream and also like some kind of bizarre wish fulfillment i made up when i was 16. ok anyway. thats the end.

Helow Vice-Captain! Can I request Jean-Jeacques, n° 17? You're so precious, thank you <3

Hello my dear, JJ Style for you! :D

17. Regrets

I would like to think that JJ is very much the type of guy to live without regrets; go hard or go home so to speak. Live life to the fullest and what not. He tries to see a valuable learning experience in every failure and every event that doesn’t turn out the way he had planned it. The training in America and under Celestino that didn’t work out? All part of shaping him and making him the man he is today. It doesn’t mean it’s all smooth sailing, but he pulls through.

If he were to regret things, it’s small stuff. Good intentions that didn’t come to fruition like “Man I really should have visited uncle Bob and aunt Margot to congratulate them on their 23th anniversary, even though I was held up volunteering at the pediatrics hospital”. And yeah, sometimes he says stuff he maybe really shouldn’t have in hindsight. He’ll wince a bit at the memory but Isabella will cheer him up.

Buuuuut if I were to venture into JJBek territory: JJ regrets sometimes not having been clear about his feelings for and intentions towards Otabek. OOPS

Thanks for asking!

Send me a character + number!

what really fucked my up about 13 reasons why was alex.

in the ambulance scene, when they say it was a 17 years old boy with a gunshot in the head, i thought it was clay, i thought it was justin, i thought it was bryce… but alex never occurred to me

and yet, he gave all the signs. the way that he talked about jessica being the only good thing in his life, the pool, the fact that he didn’t care about being beaten, that relationship with his father, he said he had no plans for the future, he wouldn’t mind to give all the truth away, the guilt…

it was all there. and yet, i didn’t see it.

the show is about suicide. the show is about how we should be able to identify its signs. i was angry because none could see what hannah was going through and how they didn’t see it coming. and yet, i didn’t see it coming neither.

this fucks me up really hard.

Me thought the years

12 year old me: Yeah they r cute i will admit

15 year old me: Well if you look at it this way-

Me now 17: tHEY R LITERALLY SUCKING DICK DO YOU NOT SEE, LOOK AT THE FUCKING EYE CONTACT. MARRIED ON THE STREETS DADDY KINK IN THE SHEETS.

the way they’ve been showing us sana pray is so important

because here you have this 17 year old girl, in her slightly messy room, with her basket ball and her medals and her anatomy poster and the open textbook and the mirror on her desk and all the other things on it as well, all the things that make her sana, just trying to pray. and you see how peaceful she looks, and it’s meant to make the whole process seem so much less….foreign? for the viewers. because finally they get to see. not images that are thrown their way by the media and the internet or the hate speech they’re used to hear. finally, islam and salah are not associated with extremism. finally, they are not portrayed as something to fear

because at the end of the day, ignorance and misconceptions lead to fear, which, as sana pointed out last season, leads to hatred. but when you look at this normal teenage girl, just trying to pray in peace on the bus, and at a party, and in her normal teenage room, you cannot possibly conclude that this is something to be scared of, you cannot possibly conclude that she’s doing something bad, you absolutely cannot conclude that her faith and her attachment to her faith is something to be scared of. by providing us these accurate, realistic images, skam is trying to shift the focus away from the biased images that are usually thrown our way, and that is so, so important

Laurel’s Guide to Grimoires

A while back I made a post about how I organize my Grimoire/Book of Shadows and for a long time since then I’ve wanted to a sort of 101 for creating a Grimoire/Book of Shadows. Be warned, this will be a long post! As always, this is merely my opinion, my word is not law.

-The Grimoire Basics-

What is a Grimoire?

As my own personal definition, a Grimoire is simply any book used by a witch in his/her/their own personal practice. There is no limit as to what a Grimoire can or cannot be, as each one is as unique as the witch who wrote it.

How do I use a Grimoire?

A grimoire is used to document, or keep track of, any magickal information that is relevant to the practitioner.It serves to log everything you need to know in your own personal craft.

-Types of Grimoires-

These are my own personal “styles” of grimoires that I have made over the years. These are not the only “kinds” of grimoires, merely suggestions.

- “Textbook” Grimoire: This is a grimoire that is set up to serve as a reference book, a book strictly for spiritual or magickal information.

- “Practical” Grimoire: This is a grimoire that can serve a practical purpose, such as a recipe or spell book. Often more portable than a standard grimoire.

- “Inspirational” Grimoire: These are often called inspiration journals. They are filled with spiritual images, quotes and writings to serve as a sort of “bible.”

- “Memory Keeping” or “Journal” Grimoire: This is a grimoire that serves to be a personal record of thoughts and feelings pertaining to spiritual activity in your life.

-Grimoire Keeping Methods-

- Blank bound or spiral bound Notebooks
    - I’ve actually seen someone tape composition notebooks together to get             a “thick” book.
- Recycled or used hard/soft cover books
- Binders
- OneNote/Tumblr/Internet
- Computer Folder/Flash Drive/Memory Card

-How to make a Grimoire-

I recommend that if you are starting a grimoire or are a relatively new witch, don’t even bother buying a nice, expensive, fancy journal. Most of the time (unless you’ve already done one or two grimoires before and you know exactly what you’ll be putting in this grimoire), that book will sit on a shelf and collect dust. Many new witches get excited to have a “fancy” grimoire and then become terrified of “messing up” in it which results in that book never being used. We’ve all been there, done that.

That being said, here are the basic steps I followed when making my “permanent” grimoire.

- Decide on your Grimoire Keeping Method
 - Gather the information that you would like to put into your grimoire (this can sometimes take a very long time, it took me years), although if the “write as you go” method is more comfortable for you, then go ahead.
- Organize your information. If you’re a perfectionist like me, this might take a bit. It’s also completely natural to change up your organization style later on.
- Protect/Consecrate your Grimoire. This is completely optional, but it can also be a fun “witchy” way to bond with your grimoire.
- Put all your information in your book in anyway that you desire. I found it useful to “plan” out the book before I started writing in all the information. This way I knew exactly what pages were going where.
- Decorate your Grimoire. Also, completely optional. Some people like decorating with flowers and ribbons and pictures and stickers. Other people prefer straight to the point text. Either way works perfectly fine.

A quick note for those who suffer from the perfectionist complex: don’t sweat it. We all want our books to be “perfect” but after writing about six grimoires I’ve learned that grimoires really don’t ever become “permanent” because our preferences change as we grow. If you’re worried about it being perfect, starting “planning” pages in a cheap journal. Take note of any mistakes or things you want to change. You can always create another grimoire later. Don’t let that pesky perfectionism hold you back. And if you make mistakes, try to work with them and turn them into something else instead of scrapping your book to start over.

I used to dream of having a huge, Charmed-like Grimoire, and now I prefer the small, sloppy, scrap book, messy-writing kind of grimoire. Don’t sweat it.

Things to put in your Grimoire

- Correspondences
- Sabbats, Esbats and any Holidays you celebrate
- How to cast spells
- Spells and Rituals
- Divination
- Astrology
- Herbs and Recipes
- Crystals
- Topics you’d like to learn about later.

How to organize your Grimoire

This post details my own personal Grimoire Index. However the best way to organize your grimoire would be whatever works best for you. I personally like having everything divided into matching sections. However, if you write spells a lot, you may want spell writing notes in the front, while correspondences would be better in the back. It’s all up to personal preference.

Other Grimoire Tips

- Intention Cheat Sheets. When you want to write a spell, nothing sucks more than having to flip back and forth all over your grimoire to find the information you need. My advice is to make “cheat sheets” for each of your intentions. Pick an intention, such as Money, and write down anything that corresponds to that (colors, herbs, moon phases or zodiac signs, crystals, incense, etc) this way the next time you want to do a spell for Money, you can just flip to your cheat sheet and be done. (UPDATED 4/24/17)

- Incognito Grimoire: Find a generic book that you like at a Goodwill or second hand shop. Write your witchcraft notes/correspondences in the margins and spacing. Use markers or crayons to draw pictures and symbols. You can also glue blank pages into the book so you have more space to write anything you want. This way your Grimoire can sit in plain sight on your bookshelf when you have company over and no one will be the wiser.

- So You Don’t Think You Can Grimoire: Tips and ideas for witches who struggle with the “My handwriting is terrible and I can’t draw” complex. (UPDATED 4/24/17)

- Scrapbook Altars

- Create a Magickal Memories Folder

This post will probably be a “masterpost” of sorts that I’ll continue to add to as the inspiration strikes. If anyone has any ideas or grimoire-related topics they’d like to see, feel free to share!

When we get caught up in the minutiae, the details that make us all different, there’s two ways of seeing that. You can see the texture of that person, the qualities that make them unique, or you can go to war about it, say, ‘That person is different from me, I don’t like you, so let’s battle.’ My mother is an ordained minister, I’m a Muslim. She didn’t do backflips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 years ago. But I tell you now, we put things to the side, I’m able to see her, she’s able to see me, we love each other, the love has grown. That stuff is minutiae. It’s not that important.

BREAKING: Trump tried to get James Comey to kill the investigation into Michael Flynn, NYT reports

  • President Donald Trump attempted to get former FBI Director James Comey to kill the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, according to a new report from the New York Times.
  • The Times report cites a memo written by Comey shortly after his conversation with Trump.
  • The Times reported parts of the memo were read to one of its reporters by a source identified as one of Comey’s associates.
  • “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Trump allegedly told Comey. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
  • The Times described the memo as “part of paper trail Mr. Comey created documenting what he perceived as the president’s improper efforts to influence a continuing investigation.”
  • The White House denied the allegation in a statement to the Times, saying the account relayed to the paper is “not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.” Read more (5/16/17 6 PM)

I've noticed that you mentioned Wiccans a lot. My MC is a witch, and I wasn't really aware of other kinds of witches, even though I did thorough research. What other kinds of witches are there? Just fyi, she is a mostly-closet witch, and uses stones as connections to places. She mostly uses runecasting and entomomancy (especially beetles and spiders). What might she choose to align with, if anything?

There are, honestly, so many more choices than just Wicca. I’ll try to list several, but do not take this as an exhaustive list. I have added resources where I could, and please forgive the length…

Voudon

An Afro-Caribbean form of worship that focuses on the loa, and spirits.

http://www.livescience.com/40803-voodoo-facts.html

I hope this put some things in perspective as to just how large witchcraft is, and why I seem to harp about being frustrated that the majority of what I see is Wicca. It is prevalent and popular, not the only way to be a witch, and definitely not the only tradition.

To answer your question about your character, Some of these paths lend themselves more towards nature than others, but I’d suggest rather looking into a tradition/path, look at types of witchcraft instead. Your character most sounds like a variety of Green Witch, and/or Animal Witch.

Chicken Nugget

pairing: Lin x reader

warnings: none!! cursing i think? this is fluffffffy

summary: The story of you and Lin, told through Twitter.

requests: “hey, I just wanted to say that your writing is so cute! ^.^ anyway, I wanted to request a Lin x Reader where maybe reader and Lin get into a Twitter battle and it’s just really cute and stuff! thanks! <3″

@not-mystery-anymore-anon: happy late birthday! This took me so long wow I have like 4 more unfinished fics so I’m gonna go work on that. I don’t know how to feel about this, enjoy!

words: 1524

January 26 / 11:56

@Lin_Manuel:

Good morning!
Sometimes people will steal the last chicken nugget from you.
They will slip past you in a line.
But life goes on.

@Lin_Manuel:

Story time. I was at the supermarket at midnight. I was gonna buy some chicken nuggets for a writing snack. And just when I come round the aisle, SOMEONE TOOK THE LAST PACK. (1/?)

@Lin_Manuel:

SHE JUST GRABBED IT. And I shouted “Hey those are mine!” and she just ignores me and walks off. What the f*ck? (2/?)

@Lin_Manuel:

I mean it’s one thing if you’re gonna take the last nuggets but you’re also gonna ignore me? And when I was about to step into one of the cashiers, lo and behold, she appears again! (3/?)

@Lin_Manuel:

She slips right in front of me and pays for her damn chicken nuggets. One day, I will find you. And suffocate you in chicken nuggets. Just you wait. (4/?)

@Y/N:

Tfw you buy chicken nuggets and some guy rants about it on Twitter even though they’re rightfully yours

January 30 / 08:05

@Y/N:

Thank you to everyone who made this album possible. Here’s to all the blood shed and tears spilled.

@Lin_Manuel:

Okay I’m supposed to be writing but HOLY MOLY. @Y/N’s most recent album is F*CKING FIRE. This is going to be the only thing that I listen to today.

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel Thank you! Did you like track 2?

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Absolutely loved it. Elegantly done. How do you get the inspiration for this kind of genius, master?

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel Glad you asked! Few months ago, I was buying chicken nuggets and this guy got mad because I took the last one. Also, I beat him to the cashier, and later that day he poured out his feelings on Twitter.

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Oh.

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel Oh indeed, Lin. Or should I call you ‘the guy who rhymed son with sun’?

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Um okay but at least that rhymed. Chicken nugget and unwritten sonnet don’t rhyme. I take back what I said about track 2.

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel Are you saying you can come up with a better rhyme for chicken nugget?

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Taking the last chicken nugget, staking it fast and kickin’ it like a bucket

@Y/N:
@Lin_Manuel Brilliant. Amazing. Superb. Impressive. Remarkable. Exceptional. Marvelous. Excellent.

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Thanks for showing us that you can use a dictionary! See ya next time when you learn more words!

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Karen told me that she spotted you at Hamilton. Why didn’t you tell me that you were suddenly a huge fan?

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel I watched it as a writer. For writing inspiration. And I’m very impressed with the musical. Not you.

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Oh so I have yet to impress you? I mean I impressed people enough to get me a couple of awards.

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel Do something worth my being impressed at, and we’ll see about that.

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Oh it’s SO on like Donkey Kong.

March 4 / 23:50

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Congrats on the Billboard #1! Hope it can last 2 weeks like Hamilton did

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel How do you manage to be an asshole and a friend in one tweet

March 6 / 02:05

@Y/N:

Sometimes I like to imagine that Eliza Schuyler from Hamilton is based off me. We’re both pure, smart and lovable.

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Nice try. You were the greatest inspiration for Jefferson, though. Where else would I find someone as annoying and cocky?

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel The mirror maybe?

April 17 / 22:05

@Y/N:

Congrats on the Oscar. And the PEGOT. You still haven’t (pe)GOT my heart, though. @Lin_Manuel

@Lin_Manuel:

@Y/N Wow yes because very other award fades in comparison to winning your heart.

April 30 / 12:05

@Lin_Manuel:

Bit of a day. Met Mark Hamill. Bought a lightsaber. Harrison Ford thought @Y/N and I were dating.

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel 1. Absolutely never 2. DETAILS PLEASE!! Harrison Ford was my childhood crush

@Lin_Manuel:

I told him you were stubborn like Leia. He said that I was Han. I said “Sure we’re Han and Leia without the whole falling in love thing.” @Y/N

@Y/N:

@Lin_Manuel Nicely phrased.

May 14 / 15:30

@Y/N:

I’ve never tried sashimi. It looks weird as hell

@Lin_Manuel:

I haven't been on in a while, why are people hating on Shallura?

Okay so. At wondercon the showrunners stated that Allura was handling all this (Keith being galra, and basically everything from season 2) how any TEENAGER would

They specifically used the word teenage, and the fandom went wild. Everyone was getting angry at eat other. Blogs started to delete their Shallura content

I personally think it’s stupid, because in season 1 we had a flashback as allura as a teenager.

Allura here is shown as a “moody teen” and as you can see there is a clear difference from how allura is then and how she is now. In this flashback she is probably 15-16 and that was before the war started.

I am almost 19 and I would consider myself a teenager still. If allura is a teen she is probably 19. There is no way she is a younger teen because we clealy see a flashback of Allura as a teen in season 1.

Anyone saying that allura is 16-17 probably forgot about this scene, because this shows her s a teenager BEFORE THE WAR. If they are really saying Allura is a teenager she is in her LATE teens, which would make her an adult. Someone who is 19 is in their teens still. And since we do not know Shiro’s age exactly most shippers see him as anywhere from 21 - 25.

If people think a 19 year old wouldn’t date someone who is in their early 20′s they are wrong. I don’t see anything problematic about this ship if we go with this mindset. There is literally no way Allura is in her early teens.

so something I saw on twitter yesterday really bugged me. there’s people saying that the Power Rangers movie is getting way more credit than is due because of the way they handle Trini’s sexuality

ok LISTEN. It was never going to be the case of Trini yelling, “IM A LESBIAN!” or “IM BISEXUAL!” there’s no way they’d be so upfront about it. I thought the scene where she came out was nice, subtle, emotional, and I thought it was in-character how she’s still sarcastic at such a time. After all Trini is what, 15/16/17 in the movie? She’s discovering herself and doesn’t have to be 100% sure. there’s time for that

cuz get this. it’s the first movie. they’ve said there’s going to be 5-7 of them? People are acting like this is the end and we’ll never see her come to terms with this and that she’ll never label herself (though sticking to no labels is fine too of course)

The Power Rangers movie DOES deserve a round of applause for including an LGBT character, just because they didn’t go about it as directly as you would’ve liked doesn’t make it any less amazing. This is a small stepping stone you guys we’re going to see her character grow more confident throughout the franchise and it’s going to be beautiful

I've seen you say a couple times that you don't see or that you're disabled. Do you mind talking about it? I ask because I am an aspiring writer and it is really hard for me. I wanted to know how you managed or what it was like?

I don’t mind talking about it. It’s something that made me who I am.

When I was about 12, my health sort of started to eat itself. I suddenly had a ton of allergies, and there were days I couldn’t get out of bed. I got sick all the time. In freshman year of high school, I suddenly couldn’t see. For a long time a thing had been going on in my eyes, but I guess I didn’t think it was abnormal until it made it impossible for me to see. Basically this hole was kind of growing in my eyes, but it was more like a rainbow.

When I started having trouble with colors and detail vision, my mom freaked out a bit, because at the time, I was an award winning artist who had ideas of going to college for art. Then I started tripping over things, hitting my head, having trouble with depth perception. Then I got sick, and I mean sick.

I spent about 23 hours a day in bed. I had almost constant migraines. I had pain in my entire body. My skin turned yellow. I went to every kind of doctor you can think of and was tested for everything there is. One day, I had about 12 vials of blood drawn. No one knew what was wrong. The eyes weren’t that big a deal at first, because it seemed like I might have something really serious. The first couple of eye doctors I went to kind of looked at me and said “Oh it’s nothing big.” I actually had one guy tell me that my brain was just shutting off my eyes because I wasn’t using them properly. Yeah.

Then finally, my mom took me to a friend of our family who happened to be an eye surgeon. She did a free exam. I’ll never forget it because it was the first time anyone believed me. I’d been told by doctor after doctor that there was nothing wrong with me. I’d been referred to therapists, told I needed depression meds, told I was just going through a phase or needed attention. Then this doctor put on her head gear, looked into my eyes…took off the head gear…got new head gear…looked into my eyes…took off the headgear…got hand held tools…looked into my eyes…and then stared at me with her mouth hanging open.

“I can’t see the back of your eye,” she said. And suddenly the world simultaneously healed itself and flipped upside-fucking-down for me.

Then it was all about my eyes, the one symptom we could see happening. The one that was the most dangerous. But by then it was too late.

What happened is pretty simple: I apparently have some weird recessive DNA. It triggers certain bizarre immune issues at puberty. My immune system decided to attack my body. The eyes are a delicately balanced system. They show symptoms first. My immune system attacked them with a vengeance. They swelled up like balloons. Normal eye pressure is about 14-17. Mine was at a 22 at its best. It put a tremendous amount of pressure on my Retina, specifically my macula, cutting off blood flow like when you sit on your foot. You know those little shadowy things that float across your eyes? They’re called protein floaters. My eyes had produced so many of those that the doctor could not see through them. It was a fog.

They had to find a way to map my eye, to track the damage. Cue the eye exam from hell. I have always been, even before my autoimmune disorder, deathly allergic to melon. Any kind of melon. But now I was allergic to all sorts of shit, fruits vegetables, all kinds of crap. My dad is allergic to contrast dyes. So when the retinologist suggested this dye-based eye exam that is kind of like a CAT scan, my mom said “no”. See, they inject you with this dye and then they flash this weird light in your eyes. It causes the dye to glow, and then they can see the things through the fog. My mom told them I was too sensitive to stuff for that to be safe. The doc assured her they’d put a butterfly in my arm, meaning the vein would be kept open, and a syringe of benedryl was set on the counter. They’d never had anyone react, and they needed the pictures or there was nowhere to go from there.

So they put this dye into me, and it was like I’d been injected with fire, but there was no way around it, and to me, I knew they only had about 90 seconds to get the images they needed. So I sucked it up. finally the burning began to spread. Suddenly my back felt like I was being stabbed, and I suddenly couldn’t speak. I tapped my hands on my mom, then began sneezing spontaneously. My mom lifted my shirt, and I had quarter-sized hives. The nurse said “Stop sneezing on the camera”. Yeah.

My mom went ballistic. The doctor flew up the stairs and gave me the emergency meds. I slid into a dissociation state and nearly out of my chair. They had to prop me against the camera for the next couple minutes and reinject the dye. No other way, you see.

They did this test every few months for a few years.

But then there was treatment. Not much they could do, except try to get the swelling under control. Only way to do that was corticosteroid injections in the eye. Yup. A needle in the eye. No, they don’t knock you out. They numb the surface of the eye with the same numbing drops they give you for the exams and then they come at you with a needle, tell you to look down and to hold still. And you fucking do.

I was 15 when that started.

I went to experimental clinics, labs, and joined studies. I dropped out of those. Why? It’s pretty simple. The first day I came to the exams, I was kept waiting for over two hours. I was taken into a room. I was left there. No information, no talking. Suddenly a man came in followed by a group of people, all in lab coats. He started moving me around like I was a doll and talking like, “The patient presents with…the patient this, the patient that…”

I shoved him back and said, “The patient’s name is Kristina, and she is 16.”

He finished his exam, and when he left, after the students had gone, he took two Q-tips, dipped them in that pink shit your dentist uses to swab your gums before an injection, and SHOVED them under my eyelids with a cocky smirk.

The patient will never be an snotty little bitch again, I guess.

So yeah. Fuck those guys. They gave me two injections in one day, which no one had ever done before, because it was almost impossible to function with two pimple-like bubbles on your eyeballs.

Still my health was bad. Then all of a sudden, when my mom had given up, It just wasn’t anymore. Suddenly, I was fine, and all that was left were the eyes. I went back to school, except now I was blind.

In a few months, I’d lost about 80% of my perfect vision. I was photophobic. I got horrible and constant headaches. I walked with a cane. And not a single fucking teacher believed me, except my civics teacher, who had gone blind at a young age due to some other weird eye disorder, and my physics teacher who was deaf. I had teachers send me to the office for wearing my sunglasses (with a note on file). I had teachers get on my case about having an audio recorder and CD player for my books. I had teachers call me names, make fun of me, make me leave class to photocopy their notes larger, so that I missed the lecture the notes were on. I had teachers take my medications which had to be in my possession because of their time-sensitive nature and constant administration and hide them in their desks as punishment for asking questions or demanding help. I had classmates pick on me, but luckily, I was well-liked, and I was an officer in the ROTC. I even excelled there in spite of my vision, because my Captain believed in my leadership skills.

I always tell this story because I think it is funny. We had this special boot camp we got to go to if we were in the upper ranks of the ROTC. If you joined the military after high school (which I could never do) you got a higher paygrade for having gone through it. Almost like taking a couple JC classes in the military. It was grueling and all physical fitness, obstacle courses, PT, classes, guard duty…fucking blah. Our unit was allowed six participants. I sort of figured that it wasn’t really fair for me to go, even with my high rank (a company XO). To my complete fucking shock, my Captain recommended me to go, cutting out a classmate (and ex) of mine who was higher in rank. The boy went ape-shit. He went on and on about how unfair it was. He even went to the school board. My Captain made his reasons clear; he told them that the academy isn’t about military sponsorship. It’s about skills and quality. He didn’t care if I had a disability. In his eyes I had more innate ability than anyone there because I had worked so hard just to be where I was. The boy was angry. I told my Captain I appreciated the gesture, but honestly, we ought to make it fair. I told him that we should train to meet the PT standards, and that if this kid could make his, but i couldn’t make mine, he should go. I made mine. He didn’t. He complained about that too. At the last minute, we were told one extra person could come because another school had lost one. So he came anyway. The whole time he bitched about me being there. When I got there, the real military officers gave me shit like you wouldn’t believe, because they weren’t used to dealing with disabilities or recognizing that they can’t discriminate against high schoolers by law. The commander of the unit tried to dress me down in front of everybody for wearing sunglasses. I was pretty pleased with myself for telling him off but still sounding respectful. He kept saying “Take off my glasses”. I told him they weren’t his. They were mine, by law, and that if he had a problem with that, he could consult my attorney, the DOJ, and the doctor who prescribed them. He tried to fuck with me. I didn’t say anything except to ask him if he wanted me to have a migraine, because that’s what taking the glasses off means. He was so confused by me he walked away and called my Captain over. There were words. After that, he came up to me once or twice, almost like a test, to ask me if I needed him to slow down or if I was getting around alright. He wasn’t being nice. He was egging me in a condescending tone and with very bullying language. He’s a drill instructor, and you know what, that’s his job. I told him I was fine. But I made a decision: I wasn’t just going to make the female PT marks. I was going to test out of this fucking place at the male PT marks. And I fucking did. That boy…had an asthma attack on the track (I had asthma too, but I worked my ass off while he coasted on his “boyness”) and failed. At the certificate ceremony, the commander came up to me and said I had really impressed him, and that it was a shame I couldn’t enter the Navy. I thanked him, but what I wanted to say was, “Go fuck yourself and take the NAVY with you”. I ended up the Battalion XO Senior year. This would have given me a guaranteed spot in Westpoint if I could have taken it. My Captain cried when he told me he was sorry he had to give it to one of our Company XO’s. I told him that it was best for everyone, because I am not the type of person to enjoy taking orders. I had learned that about myself.

He laughed.

Around Junior year I got people to pay attention. My doctors got the DOJ and the Social Security people involved. A woman came to my school and enforced compliance in a tone of voice I’d never heard anyone but my mother use. She threatened to rain brimstone down on them if they didn’t give me what I needed, and things changed.

My parents wanted me to take a full scholarship to a local school, but I wanted to get away. So I did. I wanted to travel abroad, so i did. And when I was 19, they perfected one of the surgeries they had been working on the entire time I’d been struggling with this.

See, the injections had brought and kept the swelling down, but that meant that the fog was still there (since ocular fluid doesn’t replace), and the structures in the eye had been stretched all to shit, and were laying in my eye like melted plastic wrap. The old surgery was like a blind man hacking with a machete, but the new surgery used fluorescent dyes to track movement. Dyes that wouldn’t kill me. The old surgery had a 50-50 shot at complete loss of vision and made you lay on your face for three weeks. The new was fool proof and took 45 minutes. So, I got one eye done. They swapped out all the fluid and replaced it with saline. They peeled the distorted membrane off the macula. They stitched up my eyeball and gave me a sick metal eye patch. Looked like a fucking space pirate. It was rad.

But the blind spot is still there. The cataracts caused by the steroids are still there. The scars are there.

A few years later I had the other one done too.

My college was great. It took a lot of work getting all my reading done, about 500 pages minimum, per week, done via audio. I used to spend hours at the pool table in our residence hall, listening to my books and practicing. I got pret damn good too, at pool. It was difficult taking notes or working with a note taker. It was scary traveling by myself. It was hard to get people to understand there wasn’t anything WRONG with me. Just that my eyes don’t work even though it seems like I’m normal and fine, and like they should. People always think to be legally blind you have to be completely blind, and they think you’re not going to be able to defend yourself. I’ve been targeted by pickpockets. I’ve been followed by scary dudes. I’ve been treated like shit, laughed at, and accused by full grown adults of faking to get privileges, all because I can look at the place where their head should be and smile at the blank spot there. All because I can walk down a flight of stairs with a few neat tricks I know that have nothing to do with a cane.

But shit…you probably didn’t mean to ask for my life story. I’m going to get back to the point. My writing. What has it done for that? Like how can you be a writer if you can’t fucking see? Technology. It’s been amazing. I can use a computer same as anyone. The Kindle has been a fucking revolution for me because for the first time in a decade and a half I could read without pain and suffering. Just…all the things it does have made life so much easier than it used to be. It got me out of bad relationships with people who used my disability as a control. It gave me a little bit of confidence back. It helped me know I could handle myself.

And really, I think my vision loss had a lot to do with my writing. In some ways it gives me different perspective, sure, but it’s more than that. I was undeclared when I entered college. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I thought about history or sociology. My mom had a degree in that and she was an English teacher. I wanted art history, but what the fuck was the point in that? Couldn’t see a damn thing. And then I had a class in poetry, and shit…That made sense. I’d always loved language and writing. Always been okay at it. Dorte stuff but never thought about doing it for a living. But then it was like yeah…yeah I’m gonna fucking do that. Just like when I decided to meet the male PT standards.

If it is in you. If you love it. If it defines you and possesses you, it does not matter how fucked up you are. You will find a way. You don’t have a choice. You are that thing. And you’ll adapt. You just have to let yourself. You have to keep pushing. You have to learn how to handle frustration. you have to train yourself into stamina. You just keep going. I’m nowhere near as successful as I want to be. I’m still going. I hope I get even better. I hope I can say things that make truth more obvious, or that help people put words to things they have always wanted to say.

I don’t need my eyes to be a fucking firestorm. That’s just me. Eyes don’t mean shit.

So keep going. Keep doing whatever you need to. Do it better and better. Bend yourself around it. People who see you struggle will think they’re lucky, but you and I know the truth: they’re not even close to the kind of strong you are. Not even a little bit.
