the unkiss

fireandiceblr  asked:

What do you think about Sansa's crush on Loras? Do you think it means something that no matter how much she seems to grow as a character she still holds a crush over some pretty knight that never really seemed to care about her and she still imagines him when she kisses people (even if her thoughts get directed back to sandor)

Well… Loras is a very safe crush.

Loras plays the role for Sansa that teen heartthrobs do for many adolescent girls, a safe exploration of their growing sexuality.

The idolization of teen idols typically begins in early adolescence when girls start to become interested in romance and dating and more aware of social norms which suggest that they should have romantic feelings for someone of the opposite sex (Simon, Eder, & Evans, 1992). Rather than dating in real life, developing a crush on a teen idol is a way for girls to acknowledge their emerging sexual feelings in a safe, non-threatening way (Engle & Kasser, 2005). Because teen boys are viewed by girls as only interested in sex (McRobbie, 1991), teen idols are a preferable option. Further, they often project a feminine form of masculinity that is sexually non-threatening and thus accessible to young girls (Engle &: Kasser, 2005; Karniol, 2001; McRobbie, 1991; Sweeney, 1994).

Bitten by Twilight: Youth Culture, Media, & the Vampire Franchise

One of the most popular ways people like to hate teenage girls is to complain about their “insane” crushes on boy band members. Now, let me fucking tell you something: those big dumb crushes are what helps a teenage girl develop her sexuality in a safe environment that she can control. In her world, she can listen to One Direction and hear all these songs about how great she is, and how much these cute non-threatening boys want to make her feel special. Why is this so important? Because no one is pushing them. There’s no fourteen year old boy shoving his clammy hands down your shirt without your consent. These fantasy boys are not convincing a girl to send naked pictures, only to show all their friends and call her a slut. In the fantasy land of boy bands, the girl has all the power. And we need to stop judging them for wanting to escape into that.

–Meghan Harper, “Why I Fucking Love Teenage Girls”

ASOIAF is a medieval-style world, so it of course doesn’t have pop idols and movie stars, but it does have tournaments and tourney champions, who play that role for the adolescent girls of Westeros. (And the boys, too. Consider Bran’s idolization of knights, especially the Kingsguard.) And Loras Tyrell is not just one of the best upcoming stars of the tourney scene, but he’s so dreamy handsome, young, and from one of the best families of Westeros. (Even Robert Baratheon crushes on him, in a manly way.)

Now, the fact that Loras is actually gay (as are so many teen heartthrobs - George Michael, we miss you) makes him even safer, whether Sansa consciously realizes it or not. This is all the more important, since because of the close circles of Westeros aristocracy, Sansa Stark has far more of a chance of personally interacting with Loras Tyrell than your typical teenage girl has with her most beloved Bieber or Zayn.

So when Sansa actually has the opportunity to meet Loras, is even led to believe she might marry him… the expression of her sexuality, while very real, is also very safe:

The sight of Ser Loras Tyrell standing on her threshold made Sansa’s heart beat a little faster.

Sansa was finding it hard to walk and talk and think all at the same time, with Ser Loras touching her arm.

I am talking to him, and he’s touching me, he’s holding my arm and touching me.

Desperately she tried to think of something clever and charming to say to him, but her wits had deserted her. She almost told him how beautiful he was, until she remembered that she’d already done that.

Ser Loras in white silk, so pure, innocent, beautiful. The dimples at the corner of his mouth when he smiled. The sweetness of his laugh, the warmth of his hand. She could only imagine what it would be like to pull up his tunic and caress the smooth skin underneath, to stand on her toes and kiss him, to run her fingers through those thick brown curls and drown in his deep brown eyes. A flush crept up her neck.

–ASOS, Sansa I

Or, for a visual representation:

Now, the trouble (or not?) is that this safe crush of Sansa’s is no longer something she can rely on. Whether it’s because of her aging into womanhood, or because of her actual experiences with sexuality – the dark masculine danger of Sandor Clegane, her marriage to Tyrion Lannister (including seeing him nude and sleeping next to him in bed for weeks), the explicit rape threats of Joffrey Baratheon and Marillion, the disturbing attentions and unfatherly kisses of Petyr Baelish – when she wishes to escape into her formerly favorite safe fantasy of Loras Tyrell, it twists away from her into something else:

Before she could summon the servants, however, Sweetrobin threw his skinny arms around her and kissed her. It was a little boy’s kiss, and clumsy. Everything Robert Arryn did was clumsy. If I close my eyes I can pretend he is the Knight of Flowers. Ser Loras had given Sansa Stark a red rose once, but he had never kissed her… and no Tyrell would ever kiss Alayne Stone. Pretty as she was, she had been born on the wrong side of the blanket.
As the boy’s lips touched her own she found herself thinking of another kiss. She could still remember how it felt, when his cruel mouth pressed down on her own. He had come to Sansa in the darkness as green fire filled the sky. He took a song and a kiss, and left me nothing but a bloody cloak.

–AFFC, Alayne II

Note that there are many analyses of “the unkiss” (link 1, link 2), Sansa’s imagined memory of being kissed by Sandor the night of the Blackwater, but what many point out is that it is again an attempt by Sansa of a safe fantasy, a subconscious attempt to control and understand and romanticize a frightening sexually-charged situation. It’s just several octaves away from her non-threatening fantasies of kissing and touching the “beautiful” Loras.

And though you say Sansa still holds this crush, please note that Loras is only mentioned in Sansa’s narrative once in AFFC (that scene above), where she recognizes that Loras’s attentions were nothing real, no kisses, just a rose. Also, when she thinks about the men who helped her in King’s Landing, Loras is not one of them. Furthermore, he’s not mentioned at all in her TWOW preview chapter – which, considering it focuses on an upcoming tourney and the young knights who wish to be its champions, should be a perfect occasion for the pretty knight Loras to stroll through Sansa’s head, and yet he does not.

So I would say that Sansa’s adolescent crush on Loras is something perfectly understandable… and also something she has outgrown. I hope that helps!

Some instinct made her lift her hand and cup his cheek with her fingers. The room was too dark for her to see him, but she could feel the stickiness of the blood, and a wetness that was not blood. “Little bird,” he said once more, his voice raw and harsh as steel on stone.

The Unkiss sketch by mugiwaranami @ instagram
(Spoilers ALL) ASOIAF in Shakespearean-Style Verse

The unKiss, in Shakespearean-style verse, as written by nfriel:

What pyre burns in Aegon’s city proud!

The Rush aflame, with groaning cries, lets birth

Its shadow’d sons, like hounds releas’d, to fight

The champions of common flame above.

The rats who flee the Bottom’s anarchy

Turn thieves, their knavish pockets stuff’d with prize.

And oh! The heroes of the crown return

More corpse than man, with fewer than before,

And gravely wounded, faces veil’d with ash.

Cruel War has made them strangers to themselves.

Fair Dawn surrenders to the furied claws

Of wildfire, alchemists’ delight.

The acrid stench, the herald old of hell,

This world invades, declaring its demise.

To life or death, to Dontos or to Payne,

My fate is sealed, thus perforce must I wait.

The course of night shall pass, and in its stead

My wolf I’ll meet, if I am mark’d for dead.

[enter SANDOR]

The bird in ashen clime still finds it nest.

The Hound now seems his namesake’s perfect glass.

See how his eyes glow in the emerald light!

Yet dark remains the rest, his cloak except.

Thy scream will be thy death. To that, I swear.

But wherefore cag’d, sweet bird, in martial rage?

Has thou no interest in the victor’s name?

I know not. Has a victor been reveal’d?

Not triumph but in failure bear myself.

Let others make a like report for news.

In failure? Has thou lost?

And grievous so.

All lost, the vile Imp to thank.

But dead.

They say he died.

Not so, I wish it not.

The mercy of the gods would see him burn’d.

Yet not for me their justice to dispense.

I needs depart.

So spake the bird.

Aye, quick departing.

Yet the realm is vast.

Hast thou no destination in thy mind?

Away shall serve. From ash and flame I flee.

Perhaps the North my purpos’d place shall be.

The gates and Keep are clos’d, at queen’s command.

To those who wear the cloak, no pass is barr’d.

To those who wear a sword, none stand oppos’d.

Alone can fire cease my certain flight.

Thus spoken, why come here and so declare?

Thou Starks keep promises. What, lost thy sense?

A song thou swore, and thus do I insist.

Amidst the smoke and death? Nay, I shall not.

Unhand me, for my heart is seiz’d by fear.

Thine eyes once open’d see but only fear.

Look now upon my face—this, I command.

The mummers’ demon masks give lesser dread.

Thank Seven for the blood, to hide his scars.

What wild eyes and frenzied, as a beast’s!

His brother’s burns with violent shivers twitch.

This drunken sword, come stinking in his gore—

Is this what singers dream belongs to war?

Away, sweet bird, come fly with me away.

No man in hearts e’er struck such fear as I.

I promise thee more safety in my care

Than ever could thou hope in Maegor’s Keep.

The man who wish’d thee hurt my hand would slay.

A maiden has no fight for man so strong.

Thine eyes kept clos’d? What, still afraid, my bird?

Then give the song thou promis’d long ago.

Maid Jonquil and her fool shall be thy life.

Thy blinded silence will earn naught but death.

A bird has native aptitude for song

Yet terror now constricts my learned tongue.

But I dare not his face screen from mine own.

One song I know, and that one shall he have.

[to SANDOR] [sung]

Gentle Mother, font of mercy,

Save our sons from war, we pray,

Stay the swords and stay the arrows,

Let them know a better day.

Gentle Mother, strength of women,

Help our daughters through this fray,

Soothe the wrath and tame the fury,

Teach us all a kinder way.

The bird has sung.

[exit SANDOR]

Though fearsome was his countenance, I felt

Some salty tears were wept beside the blood.

Yet now alone, to face a fate unsure.

The wild fires sounded their retreat.

Now stoic darkness overwhelms the land

And only jaded ghosts remain as proof.

His Kingsguard white, with blood and fire stain’d,

He left as souvenir, and close I keep.

For all I have is memory and cloak

To think of him who vanish’d in the smoke.

How is it possible I’m only discovering this now?!  This has made me unspeakably happy.

‘Sweet lady, all men are fools, and all men are knights, where women are concerned.’

I love this quote. My grandma used to tell me men are fools and weak regarding women, I was too little and I did not really understand what she meant,

Sometimes I like to think GRRM simply forgot he never actually wrote Sandor kissing Sansa. Then he panicked when questioned and went, “Oh, shit. Ummmm…that Sansa sure is an unreliable narrator! Yes indeedy! Heh heh. That’s the ticket. It’ll, umm…come into play later. I totally meant to do that.”

I know it’s not true but it’s hilarious to think about.

Another work in progress I will finish one day…I really love drawing these two. I have lots of skeches. The original file is pretty huge..almost 20000x20000. I had to make it almost 10 times smaller so I could upload it here. I will probably add his helmet as well. He’ll have three dog heads like the Clegane sigil has 3 dogs. I also secretly link the armor to the Cerberus.

So we know Sansa is an unreliable narrator. And is’t not only about the unkiss.

‘I wish the Hound were here. The night of the battle, Sandor Clegane had come to her chambers to take her from the city, but Sansa had refused. Sometimes she lay awake at night, wondering if she’d been wise.’

But if we look at the actual scene we can see that she didn’t refuse him. He made his offer but never actually gave her a chance to reply. He mistook her closing her eyes and expecting a kiss to her being disgusted to look at him. (Oh, Sandor, you big fool! You know lots about swinging a sword…but you know nothing about womanly affairs.)

“I could keep you safe,” he rasped. “They’re all afraid of me. No one would hurt you again, or I’d kill them.” He yanked her closer, and for a moment she thought he meant to kiss her. He was too strong to fight. She closed her eyes, wanting it to be over, but nothing happened. “Still can’t bear to look, can you?” she heard him say. He gave her arm a hard wrench, pulling her around and shoving her down onto the bed. “I’ll have that song. Florian and Jonquil, you said.” His dagger was out, poised at her throat. “Sing, little bird. Sing for your little life.”

We also get this passage later:

‘She could still remember how it felt, when his cruel mouth pressed down on her own. He had come to Sansa in the darkness as green fire filled the sky. He took a song and a kiss, and left me nothing but a bloody cloak

She sounds a bit bitter because he left her. It’s almost clear she was expecting something more. So what does Sansa want? Him to not leave (’I wish the Hound were here’), a kiss (I think the kiss originated during those nights she spent off page thinking about what happened during the Blackwater scene) or did she expect him to steal her away like in some song?

He asked her to sing. Later he asks again and she offers to sing an unheard  Florian and Jonquil song to Sandor, he refuses and mocks the song, but asked for it at knifepoint during the Blackwater scene.

What was that unheard song about?

ACOK chapter 18:

‘’sing me a song, why don’t you? Go on. Sing to me. Some song about knights and fair maids. You like knights, don’t you?”

‘’I never got my song.”
“I … I know a song about Florian and Jonquill.”
“Florian and Jonquill? A fool and his cunt. Spare me. But one day I’ll have a song from you, whether you will it or no.”
I will sing it for you gladly.
Sandor Clegane snorted. “Pretty thing, and such a bad liar’’

(So he wants a song, but not the one of Florian and Jonquill. What kind a song does he really want?)

ACOK chapter 62:

‘“I’ll have that song. Florian and Jonquill, you said.” His dagger was out, poised at her throat. “Sing, little bird. Sing for your little life.”

(Of course she sung,,,but not what he asked for and she does not do it gladly, Instead she sings the Mother hymn.)

During his time with Arya, Sandor  boasts to her about how Sansa gave him a song.

But as he is on his deathbed he admits Sansa din not give him a song…he took it.

‘I took the bloody song, she never gave it.’

He wanted her to give him a song willingly.

Sansa’s dream:

‘Only then he was bigger than Tyrion had any right to be, and when he climbed into the bed his face was scarred only on one side. “I’ll have a song from you,” he rasped.’

While Lysa was screaming while having teh sexy times with Petyr, Marillion tells Alayne he could make her sing louder than Lysa. So here it is. A double meaning to ‘song’ /‘to sing’.

Sansa and Sandor are both linked to songs. Maybe Sansa will sing him a song gladly one day. What kind of song? We’ll have to wait and see ;).

We also get this little gem from Cersei:

‘Before I am done with her, I promise you, she will be singing to the Stranger, begging for his kiss.’

Here Sansa is linked again to ‘singing’. Stranger is also the name of Sandor’s horse, which is on the QI, but is still pretty wild and refuses to submit to the monks. The Gravedigger is also showing sings of not being tamed as he throws dirt towards Brienne. And also would you consider a man with his face hidden a stranger?‘Begging for his kiss’-if we look at how many times Sansa brings up the unkiss it is pretty clear that she wished that it happened…that’s why she creates this false memory.

Parallels between Sandor/Gravedigger and the Stranger.

- The Stranger represents death and the unknown-> Sandor brought death upon others, even calls himself a butcher.  The Hound ‘died’.Arya is the only one who would know and expect him dead as she left him in the middle of nowhere while he was close to death. Sandor’s fate was unknown to many. His Helmet is worn by other people afterwards. To Sansa Sandor’s faith is still unknown.

-The Stranger leads the dead to the other world-> The Gravedigger is digging graves.

-The Stranger’s face has been described as half-human-> Sandor has a half-human face if you think about how half his face is a scar.

-The Stranger is also described as being almost animal-like-> Sandor is called ‘the Hound’,’Dog’…he even calls himself ‘dog’. Also his helmet is made in the shape of a snarling dog. And he is a beast-like character.

-The Stranger’s face is concealed beneath a hooded mantle-> The clothing customs of QI includes monks concealing their faces with scarves, hoods. Guess what the Gravedigger wears.

-Bonus:- Sandor finds an interesting name for his horse: Stranger.

-People avoid praying to the Stranger ->people usually don’t want Sandor around. Think of the time when he was asked to leave that village, although he was helpful while he stayed there.

-Outcasts identify themselves with the Stranger-> Sandor mocks religion, but he is an outcast. He did his best during his stay in the village, yet he was asked to leave. After papa Clegane died and Gregor inherited the keep, Sandor left.

Sansa is basically a romantic, geeky, tumblr fangirl in ASOIAF and she literally wrote the first SanSan fanfic while thinking about the unkiss. This is the most in-character modern AU ever. I can imagine her writing a fanfic about her OTP - Florian x Jonquil with Sandor constantly taking Florian's place in her imagination.

Truer words have never been spoken anon. Sansa, the only person who manages to write canon AU, which is canon.
With Sansa writing about Florian x Jonquil but replacing Florian with Sandor, we have a character whos OTP is basically herself with someone else.

Vines of fatigue creep up my spine
the bed too forlorn a nestular space
blue sheets will never absorb your scent
nor let linger the yawn of your warmth

I walk around dazed and dishevelled
knowing it is I who opened the door
it is you who breezed in and owned
every nook and cranny of my home
now empty and desolate and I, and I alone

entangled in exhaustion, crestfallen
conceding defeat; you’re gone,
my bed forlorn and cold, vacated
in far too much of a hurry, how
deflated this bubble of hope I carried
sits sunken in the gaunt of cheekbones
once proud now unkissed by your sun

Expectation vs Reality hahaha

“Little bird. I knew you’d come.”

This line  cracks me up every time. It’s her room…of course she would come in it. Leaving my silliness aside, the scene that takes place in Sansa’s room is kind of tragic and sad.

We have two drunk and scared characters in this scene, and the one that acts maturely is Sansa. Sandor behaves like an idiot. Yes…he is scared of the fire, he is intoxicated with wine and he also deserted his post and he really seems lost…but it doesn’t excuse his behavior. He needs to learn not to bite the hand that tries to pet him.

A drunk and scared Sansa (thanks to Cersei and the battle) is still able to be brave and kind (comforts the scared women after Cersei leaves, treats Lancel with kindness, touches Sandor’s cheek). The girl that once got angry with her sister for staining her dress with a blood orange…is now expecting to be kissed by a man who smells of wine, sweat, fire, vomit and blood. And if you look at it: people fighting and death everywhere, man comes in the dark, offers to protect her and take her away. It’s the ground for a perfect song. It’s only the kiss that it’s missing.

Why did Sandor come to her room? My opinion is that he was very confused himself (wine+fear+feelings) and that maybe he was looking for comfort from somebody who treated him well. Of course the sort of comfort a little girl wants is not the same a man has on his mind. It is possible that in the mix of all that was happening, Sandor thought he might have a chance at something else. He was not thinking straight. We don’t know what goes through his mind, we can only speculate. I don’t think he came to her room to rape her (he had many chances to do so), but it is not impossible that maybe it crossed his mind to get a different kind of ‘song’ from her that night… and maybe in his twisted mind he thought it was the right time for it and that she would gladly do it because he was offering to take her with him.

The moment she closes her eyes (believing he would kiss her), he loses his shit again because he thinks that she doesn’t want to look at his ugly face. For someone who constantly tries to open her eyes to see the cruel truth of the world, Sandor is just as blind in this scene. Sad, old, blind dog. Someone should tell him people close their eyes for other reasons than to avoid his face. Not to mention that he never gave her a chance to say yes or no to his proposal. He wanted to take her with him, protect her and kill everyone that would have hurt her. If that doesn’t sound romantic, I don’t know what else to say.

There is a very similar scene with Dunk and Rohanne. Another tall strong guy and a red head. He pulls his dagger out and cuts her braid to remember her. They also kiss.

From the BWB scene Sandor takes a song (though it was not the love song he asked for) and Sansa creates the missing kiss. As a bonus, she keeps his filthy cloak among her precious dresses. This is the girl that cried over her sister ruining her dress with a blood orange. She could have thrown that cloak from the window and nobody would have cared.

When Sandor finds out that they married her to the imp and that she managed to escape he drinks and gets lost in his thoughts. He also keeps mentioning the news a few times, shifting the discussion to Sansa. That shows that he was thinking of her and the imp and who knows what else that might have gone between them. He gets drunk and he is wounded in the fight.

With his last words he shows that he regretted taking the song, but he also seems bitter that the dwarf took what he wanted. He always looked down on Tyrion and hated him, so finding out the little bird was married to him, must have hit him hard. He probably knows about what happened to Tysha and I do think he must have imagined various horrors being done to Sansa.

Looking back at his actions and the way he acts, it’s clear that Sandor thinks that Sansa wouldn’t touch him with a 12 m pole because he is ugly (though that is not true…but he knows nothing). Tyrion is not  only ugly, but also a dwarf. Sandor actually states that if the gods existed then they are some cruel assholes for creating dwarfs like the Imp and simpletons like Lollys. He saved her from being raped from the mob, just for her to end up eventually raped by the Imp. Of course he is bitter about it.

Unkiss Me

Malec OS for the Holidays Season. Available on AO3.

Summary: Magnus Bane loved New York. I mean, what other city in the world held Christmas raves?

He especially loved it when he managed to convince Ragnor and Catarina to join him. Spending time with your chosen family during the holidays was the best thing in the world.

The only thing that could make it even better, however, would be getting to know that very attractive stranger that just wouldn’t take his eyes off Magnus. Tall, dark and handsome was just what Magnus wanted to end his amazing night.

All he needed was an opportunity and it came, in the form of a well-placed mistletoe.

Prompt: “We bumped into each other under some mistletoe and kissed, but it turns out you’re the kid from third grade who would tie my shoelaces together and I still hate you for that.”

You know you’re ugly when you’ve basically conditioned yourself to be asexual. I am 26 and an untouched, unkissed virgin who has closed the chapter “love” without ever having opened it. With my face, the possibility of love is just nonexistent, it is not for me. Males do not want me. Fat guys don’t want me, ugly guys don’t want me, guys in my league are completely out of reach.

Never has my life been more miserable than when I’ve tried to “put myself out there”. Haha, after 26 years of being ignored, laughed at and called names I should’ve known better. All that be approachable crap. Smile shit. Haha. Because guys just love ugly girls who smile. That’s how you attract the bullies who want to put an ugly girl in her place. Don’t even get me started on that “dress feminine” crap. My hot friend shows up in a white oversized tee with a hint of mascara and has guys all over her, while I’m dressed “sexy” with a shitload of make up on getting the “why are you here” look from guys. My hot friends seem to get a kick out of playing “how little can I try and still show her that I’ll always be chosen over her” game.

I don’t even want love or a relationship, I’ve learnt that’s not for me. What I want is to be treated like a normal person. At this point I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to tattoo the words “don’t worry just because I’m ugly doesn’t mean I want your dick” across my forehead, for guys to treat me human.

These sketchy wips I have been posting are simply made for fun. In less than 2 days I am going to be a free woman and I will color everything. I do have more sketches and little comics…just need to find them all. Will probably add a see-thru nightgown on Sansa.
