the turtle trail

Fandom: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Characters: Mikey, others mentioned
Relationship: Mikey/reader
Request: Hey i have a request for you
how bout the reader is talking to her mom that she’s expecting a baby turtle for pet but mikey eavesdrop the wrong idea like she really expecting and tells everyone and things get weird and awkward ;)
“Because they are cute.” You giggled as you sat on your sofa opposite your mum. She frowned as she raised her cup of tea to her lips and sipped, silent judging you.
She had come to visit you and noticed you had a small tank set up in the corner. It was one half land and one half water with a heating element set up above it. Instantly she had what it was for.
You told her you were getting a pet turtle from the small pet shop around the corner but you had to set up the tank first before you could pick it up.
“But they will cost a lot to keep.” You mum said as she raised an eyebrow at you.
“But they are easy to look after. And I already know everything they need. Plus I have everything already.” You gestured to the bag sitting under the table the tank was on.
“I just don’t understand.” She chuckled as she shook her head. “Most people want dogs.”
“well, im not most people.” You retorted as you raised your cup to your lips and taking a sip.
After a long but comfortable silent, your mum got to her feet.
“Well, I suppose if your’re happy.” She shook her head as she smiled and picked up her handbag, getting ready to leave.
“Oh mum, im so glad you’re supportive.” You said, your voice lased with sarcasm but she didn’t mind.
With that, you showed your mum to the door, waving her goodbye as she left.
—————-time skip—————-
Things were strange, to say the very least. You had only been in the lair half an hour and already both Leo and Splinter had come up and asked you very strange questions. Something about ‘planning for the future’ and then said they would be there and even saying congratulations. You smiled awkwardly and stepped around them each time. You didn’t know what they were talking about but you didn’t want to ask. They both looked really happy about whatever news you didn’t know.
You decided you would go see Mikey about it. He had been absent a few days now. You had last seen him the night before your mum came to see you and that was 4 days ago.
Knocking on his door, you heard him call out ‘who is it?’.
“Me, can I talk to you?” You asked, pushing the door open as you did and popping your head inside. Mikey was sitting on his bed, something in his hands but when he noticed you came in, he stuffed it under the sheets.
“Yeah, of course.” He bounced up off the bed as you closed the door behind you.
“Mikey, something strange is going on.” You frowned, leaning against the door. You didn’t want to come out and say ‘your family is weird’ after not seeing him for a few days.
“I know.” Mikey smiled, making you even more confused.
“You do? Why didn’t you tell me?” You asked, tilting your head to one side as he walked over to you.
“Well, I wasn’t sure how to deal with it. Never thought I would be in this position.” He shrugged.
“Wha-?” You were about to ask but he interrupted you.
“But ive thought about it and I love you and I want you to be happy.” He said, his voice sounding like he was trying to reassure you of something.
“Mikey, you’ve lost me.” You giggled, shaking your head. “But I do have a surprise for you. I doubt that’s what you know though. Ive been keeping it a secret.” You giggled, closing the gap between you both. You were excited to tell Mikey about your pet, especially because you had a really good name for him. You had been to the shop today and they said you could pick him up tomorrow.
“I know.” Mikey stressed, rolling his eyes and smiling as if it was obvious. But you didn’t think he really did.
“Really? So you know about the small green thing?” You asked, narrowing your eyes as his widened.
“You think its gonna be green?” He asked, surprised. Maybe he did know.
“Yeah, of course!” You said in an obvious voice. “ive seen him.”
“You have? Wait, it’s a boy?” He asked, his face breaking out into a smile.
“Yeah, I went to the shop today.” You nodded, a little confused as to why he was so excited.
“Shop?” Mikey asked suddenly, his head tilting to the side.
“yeah, where else would he come from?” You frowned. You saw Mikeys eyes dart down to your stomach.
Then it clicked.
“Mikey, do you think im pregnant?” You asked, taking a step back and holding up your hands.
“yeah.” Mikey reasoned as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. You let out a laugh.
“God no. Why on earch would you think that?” You asked, unable to stop grinning.
“I came up the other day to give you back a book you left and I heard you speaking to your mum about a baby.” Mikey said, the confusion obvious on his face.
“No, no. I wasn’t speaking about a baby. Im getting a pet turtles from the pet shop.” You explained, walking back to him and placing your hands on his front.
“Oh, well, fhew.” He said, trying to sound relieved and happy but you heard a slight bit of disappointment in his voice as he turned around and walked to the bed.
You walked him carefully, thinking things over. He seemed so happy when he thought you were pregnant. And he was supportive , even if it wasn’t true. That plus the way he sounded made you think.
“Mikey, do- do you want a baby?” You asked carefully, walking over and sitting on his bed in front of him. He kneeled down at your knees, his eyes avoiding yours.
“I-I was scared at first when I thought you were. But now, i-I think I do.” He pushed his hand under the cover and pulled out the thing he had hid from you earlier. It was a small, green, baby grow. Your eyes widened slight as you looked at it. He then looked up at you. “I want to have a child with you.” He said.
You smiled at him. You couldn’t believe you had met someone like him. Someone sweet and caring and loving. Why wouldn’t you want a child with him?
“Well, lets just see how we get on with the turtle. Then… maybe…” You trailed off, wrapping your arms around his neck. He smiled widely, grabbed your waist and pulled you down onto his lap before smashing his lips to yours. You giggled into the kiss but returned it, loving the sensation on he could give you.
When you pulled away for air, he lifted you up and stood to turn and sit on the bed with you still on his lap.
“So, what you gonna name it?” He asked.
“Well, I wanted to stay with Aprils idea and I was thinking ‘Fippi’ after Filippino Lippi.” You giggled as he threw his head back in laughter.
“I love it.” He laughed, pulling you closer and cuddling into you.
“Wait, you didn’t tell anyone else you thought I was pregnant?” You suddenly asked, your eyes going wide as they fell on the babygrow on the bed.
“Uh-oh.” Mikey mumbled as you stared at each other.
“That explains a lot.” You couldn’t help but giggle.

My newest life bird, the beautiful anhinga! I can’t believe it, but after reading about the Everglades for years I have finally visited! We walked the amazing Aninga Trail and saw gallinules, herons, egrets, storks, cormorants, ibises, anhingas, turtles, lizards, and of course, alligators. Or were they crocodiles? I may be able to tell birds apart, but those giant lizards still baffle me. More photos to come!

10 Incredible Hikes Under 5 Miles Everyone In Michigan Should Take

10 Incredible Hikes Under 5 Miles Everyone In Michigan Should Take

Nothing gets the juices going like a restorative hike. Thing is, sometimes you don’t have all day to travel to that epic hiking trail. Or maybe you’ve got kids or your elderly parents in tow and aren’t necessarily up for a super technical, long journey by foot.

That doesn’t mean you can’t find a shorter trip to occupy yourself – both body and mind. Here are some great hikes at 5 miles or less apiece that will be sure to be fun for the whole family.

1. Detroit RiverWalk

The transformation of Detroit’s Riverfront is unbelievable. Spanning some 3.5 miles, you can enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride from Hart Plaza to Gabriel Richard Park across from Belle Isle (about 2.5 miles). The trail combines urban and natural settings in the heart of downtown.

2. Escarpment Trail, Porcupine Mountains

This four-mile trail curves right around the ridge of the picturesque Lake of the Clouds, which you could just gaze upon for hours.

3. Grand Haven Waterfront Trail

This route takes you from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Grand River. Along the way, you’ll encounter a mix of small town life, boats, and scenic areas - all on a 2.5 mile paved hike between the lakeshore and Coho Drive.

4. Lake Erie Metropark, Brownstown

Here, you’ll have a couple of easy, no-muss trail options. There’s the Cherry Island Marsh Trail that’ll take you alongside the Detroit River, with views of Lake Erie, Sugar Island, Grosse Ile, and more. There’s also a half-mile, shorter stroll - the Big Turtle Shortcut trail - and the one-mile Trapper’s Run trail. All are suitable for hikers of all levels.

5. McCormick Wilderness

Come here for some peace and quiet. This remote hiking area will provide you with a prime, unspoiled piece of nature. Featuring a three-mile trail from a parking lot to White Deer Lake, you’ll encounter (like these little guys) pristine rock formations.

6. Rolling Hills County Park, Ypsilanti

Bring Fido with you on this dog-friendly, 1.5 mile walking path. Or for the little tykes in your life, there’s a quarter-mile long Woodland Trail that will introduce the kiddos to wildlife.

7. Rosy Mound, Grand Haven

It’s just over a half a mile each way on this hiking trail, but it includes some 1,000 feet of steps that lead you up and down the sandy dunes. It’s a nice little workout with gorgeous views.

8. Saugatuck Dunes State Park

Here you get four hiking trails to choose from and about 2.5 miles of shoreline to explore.

9. Sleeping Bear Dunes

At only 4.5 miles round trip, this may seem like an easy jaunt by the beach, but it’s actually quite a challenging journey, with steep dunes to traverse on your way to Lake Michigan. Whether you complete the trip or not, it’s still a worthwhile test in physical endurance.

10. Tahquamenon Falls, Paradise

This rolling, 4.5 mile trail takes you along one of Michigan’s most worthwhile waterside hikes. You’ll have a front row view of the falls and be taken in by their stunning beauty.

Not half bad, huh? Tell us – where are your favorite short hikes in Michigan?

Sunset Strolls

A Caskett Drabble

Just a little something I started for Fluffy Friday, but didn’t finish in time. <3 to @mrs-chanandler-bong21.

They go for a walk on the beach after dinner, taking advantage of the fact that the sun hasn’t drifted below the horizon just yet to toe out of their shoes and leave them at the edge of the dunes. Lily stays in Castle’s arms, fascinated by the gentle lap of the retreating tide, her mouth an adorable awed ‘o.’

“What do you see, Lily?” Kate asks, stretching onto her toes to dust a kiss over her daughter’s round cheek. “Do you see the ocean?”

“I bet you’re looking for the friends you made at the aquarium today, aren’t you, sprout?” Castle hums, nuzzling the baby’s neck. “Your starfish buddies, and the rays?”

Lily giggles, squirming in her father’s arms, reaching a hand out to the sea.

“Yeah, I think we should get closer. Come on, sweetheart. Maybe we’ll see a turtle or two.”

Beckett trails them to the edge of the water, affection pooling in her belly as Castle lowers their baby to her feet, waiting until Lily finds her balance to take her tiny hands in his.

The girl giggles, rocking on her toes in the hard-packed sand. She isn’t walking yet, but she’s getting there; Kate suspects that Lily will be toddling around the beach with their help by the end of their week in the Hamptons.

“Do you like the sand, baby?” Rick murmurs, dipping his head. Lily squeals, looking up at him, her dark eyes bright with worship for her father. “Uh huh, that’s what I thought. Let’s get your toes wet, too, huh?”

They half shuffle, half swing until the surf spills over their feet, pulling joyful laughter from Lily’s lips. Castle’s quiet chuckle follows, honeyed and warm.

Kate’s heart swells. Every tantrum, every fight, every frustration washes away with the sea, leaving only happiness in its wake.

God, she loves them. So much.

“Come look for shells with us, Mommy,” Castle calls, looking over his shoulder, his face soft with tenderness. No doubt, he feels it too, that intensity, that all-consuming adoration.

Her feet propel her forward before he even finishes the request.

Fanfic: Awkward

So you all remember this post? Yeah, well I finally did get some requests so I present the next ficlet for @if-the-sheets-were-the-states on the prompt “Can you write a first date fic where things go wrong, or just Sock/Jonathan being super awkward but it all works out? Please?”

So I present “Awkward.” for your reading pleasure…

The #mypubliclandsroadtrip Heads to the Sunny Alabama Shores for National Trails Day!

Today, we’re heading over to Baldwin County, Alabama, where the BLM manages seven small beach front tracts. All of these tracts are designated critical habitat for Alabama beach mouse and contain primary dunes, the preferred habitat for this species. The tracts also provide nesting habitat for loggerhead sea turtles.

In fact, these beaches are one of the few areas in the U.S. that federally-threatened Loggerhead Sea Turtles use for nesting. Actually locating a sea turtle nesting spot - momma turtles like to hide and lay eggs at night - and watching eggs hatch are rare events. Volunteers regularly patrol the beaches and watch for signs of turtle nesting.

BLM Southeastern States employees and volunteers also maintain some of the areas and trails around the beach tracts.  As a joint project, employees and volunteers defined the existing pedestrian pathway through the dunes with a unobtrusive fence. The marked path is intended to guide visitors to the beach and away from the unique habitat for wildlife.

Thanks to the volunteers whose work is critical to the conservation and recreation activities along the BLM-managed shoreline.

Shingle Creek Trail

A few days ago I was searching yet again for another destination and I was surprised that there was supposedly a creek trail close by. I loaded my bike and camera gear and off I went on the short 15 minute drive (I’m more used to referring to distances to destinations in lengths of time rather than mileage after growing up in the Philippines. Haha).

The hiking trail website listed three entrances to the trail and I chose the one by the Marriott Vista Tennis Court as it was the closest. (Yup it is a weird starting point indeed but they supposedly had a nature trail there that connected to the main trail.) I parked at the Tennis Court and off I went through the nature trail; at the end there was the fenced off structure of the high tension cables which had no trespassing signs all over it so I just went around it through the mud which I’m not so sure you are allowed to do but I already drove all the way there so I wasn’t backing out! The trail was indeed there on the other side but I encountered a little problem. There was about a 50 meter portion of the trail submerged in swampy water which looked to be about 1-2 feet deep. I was fine with biking through it and getting wet but I was just concerned by what could be lurking under the water. I nervously decided to bike through it anyway thinking that if ever something attacked me it would get my bike before myself. Hahah!

It was well worth it as the first sign of wildlife I saw was a red-tailed hawk snacking on a snake in the middle of the trail; it flew off to a nearby tree though while I was grabbing my camera from my bag. The creek itself was beautiful with really clear inviting water. I saw a bunch of wildlife as usual; it’s definitely worth going back to in the future although probably from a different entrance!
