Notes to the girl whose house I live in

by reddit user JJX2525

It took me a week to find where you keep your wifi password. A whole week! I was really worried you’d thrown it away, but lo and behold, there it was in the cutlery drawer of all places. Everything about the way you organize things confuses me. I guess because you live on your own now you just put things any old place. I know there was someone else before, I heard you talking about him on the phone. Johnny, I think? Jimmy? Anyway, I know because you said it was tough being alone. But you’re not alone, of course. You have me!

Did you ever have a genuine psychic/medium experience?

Although many readings can be attributed to cold readings or sheer coincidence sometimes it’s uncanny how accurate psychics/mediums can be. Here’s a collection of supposedly genuine experiences from threads. If you have an experience feel free to tag me @sixpenceee!

I never believe in palm /card readings. I don’t actually believe in it nowadays. BUT when I was in 9th grade, my friend took me with her to a fortune teller so she can have her future read. Surprisingly she mentioned about her love dilemma, a blonde guy and dark haired guy. She was completely convinced about her reading powers while I was meh… We’re teenagers, it’s natural we’ll find ourselves in situations like this. And then she predicted the scores she’ll get at the exams when you finish high school (in our country there are some mandatory subjects for the exams, thus multiple numbers) she guessed that right. If I think really hard about probabilities and stuff I can find a logic explanation to that as well.

About 5 years ago I saw a psychic that a family friend had told me was the real deal. I went in skeptical and came out a believer.

She used tarot cards and knew things that could have been lucky guesses, like that I had just bought a house and was renovating it, but she also knew specific things that no one else could have known.

The most amazing part of the whole thing was that she knew that I had some complications with my hormones and had a surgery in the past that would make getting pregnant very difficult, but she told me Despite all this, I would have a baby later in life. Toward the end of the reading she hands me the tarot cards and tells me to shuffle them. Then tells me to ask three questions in my mind one at a time. I decided to really test her authenticity so the first question I decided to ask was am I going to have children, and halfway through laying the five cards down, she stops and looks at me and scolds me saying “I already told you that you were going to have one child!” hah this is when I knew.

This was before I was born. My mom had a neighbor who was a grandpa who could see the future. He told my mom that my sister would be really sick when she became a preteen and not to worry because she’d be okay. When my sister was a preteen she was diagnosed with cancer and after a year and a half she was perfectly fine. My mom was pregnant with me when she met him again and he told her that I would be a c-section baby. My mom already knew this and said she had scheduled the c-section already since I was breach but he was adamant that she would have me on a certain day and that the c-section wouldn’t go on the planned day. I was born on the exact day he predicted.

Nothing too crazy but the fact that he knew that my sister would be sick and would be okay is crazy to me. He also didn’t want any money and approached my mom and asked if he could do a reading for her.

Don’t buy Battlefront 2

Over the weekend, there was a bit of a controversy involving the upcoming release Star Wars Battlefront 2.

EA, the game’s publisher, set character unlocks using the game’s in-game currency exorbitantly high. The price was set at 40,000, which some outlets suggested could take up to 40 hours of playtime. I assume this is worst-case scenario stuff, so I’m going to be generous to EA and say it was probably something like 20 hours of playtime per hero. This was seen as an attempt to not so subtly prod the player into purchasing in-game currency in order to expedite the process.

Monday, EA backpedaled and decided to heavily discount the unlocks. They declared in a tweet that they were listening to fans! And some took this as some sort of victory. This is no victory. This is what EA wanted to happen. Here’s my theory.

Before the big character unlock kerfuffle, there was a bit of a fuss over in-game lootboxes and micro transactions. People were frustrated that apparently the game has pay-to-win features. You can pay real money to have a real advantage over folks in multiplayer. In a $60 AAA release, this is absurd. In a free-to-play mobile game this is expected. This sort of thing is also EA’s main way of making money post release, so having people outright furious about them out of the gate seems bad for business.

So in order to distract from the outrage over this, I think EA set character unlock fees absurdly high in order to manufacture a separate outrage. Yes, they take a short term hit - including having a reddit comment become the most downvoted in the website’s history - but they also stand to earn some long term good will.

For starters, if you cruise the tweet where EA says that they are slashing the cost of these standalone characters, you will see person after person defend the company whenever somebody says they still aren’t purchasing the game. “EA listened! Why are you still mad! I just wanna play a fun Star Wars game!” By backing down from their crazy demands, they seem like they care about customers. So now some people are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt regarding lootboxes. You see the casual “if you don’t like it, don’t play it!” or “you don’t have to buy them!” which are certainly not helpful.

You also have what inevitably comes when a large group of people swarm on one target: death threats. No matter what side of the political spectrum someone is on or what the target is, if enough people get mad about an issue there will always be a couple of angry folks who take things too far. So, when the most downvoted comment in reddit history bring the Internet’s focus onto EA’s monetary scheme, a few crazy people will come with it.

Straight up, death threats are awful, should be taken seriously and are made by some of society’s worst people. Do not make threats at developers. Do not send hateful messages laden with personal insults at developers. Having said that, a company can use these inevitable occurrences to gain sympathy. Waypoint had an article right away on the death threats sent to game developers over this issue. Then the article’s writer, Patrick Klepek, immediately referenced the threats again when EA announced prices were reduced. You would then see people in the comments for the article saying that this sends a message to those sending threats that they work.

The .0001% of humanity that would send these kind of threats aren’t learning anything. If EA doubled down, they’d still make threats. They just do it because it’s in their nature. But because threats were made and EA made sure people knew about them - which is their right because I sure would let people know if a threat was made on my life - there will be people out there who are like “Well shit, if this game doesn’t take off those assholes win! I better buy a lootbox!” It can get in some folks minds that all EA detractors are vile people who hate developers.

A tactic similar to this was used when Mass Effect 3 was receiving hatred over the ending DLC. EA was under fire, so a lot of the shit getting flung at them from a crazy group of people was being brought to the light. It takes the heat off of the company and instead places it elsewhere

It’s all part of advertising. Paint the cynics in a negative light, make it seem like you care about customers or some virtue, and rake in money. EA wants you to remember the shitbags. They want you to remember that they listened to “the most downvoted comment in reddit history”. They want you to forget about the lootbox thing.

Don’t forget. Don’t buy the game if you disagree with this current AAA trend of monetization. They can always find another way. Don’t feel compelled to line some CEO’s wallet. Sadly the game is going to make like 80 billion dollars because it’s STAR WARS, but you don’t have to contribute to that sum.

UPDATE: https://twitter.com/EAStarWars/status/931332890717143040
They turned off micro-transactions. I personally think this is because of Belgium looking into Battlefront 2 and lootboxes as a form of gambling. BIG BRAND Star Wars + gambling = controversy the Disney overlords probably don’t want.

I’m 87 years old…I only eat so I can smoke and stay alive.. The only fear I have is how long consciousness is gonna hang on after my body goes. I just hope there’s nothing. Like there was before I was born. I’m not really into religion, they’re all macrocosms of the ego. When man began to think he was a separate person with a separate soul, it created a violent situation.
The void, the concept of nothingness, is terrifying to most people on the planet. And I get anxiety attacks myself. I know the fear of that void. You have to learn to die before you die. You give up, surrender to the void, to nothingness.
Anybody else you’ve interviewed bring these things up? Hang on, I gotta take this call….. Hey, brother. That’s great, man. Yeah, I’m being interviewed… We’re talking about nothing. I’ve got him well-steeped in nothing right now. He’s stopped asking questions.

What are your HCs if someone were to find Victor and Yuuri's very raunchy homemade sex tape? Would they be able to look at Yuuri Katsuki the same way again

It takes Yuuri a moment to reconcile the number of alert bubbles on his lock screen with a reason to panic, but when he unlocks his phone and spies the little red bubble with "529″ above the messages icon, a cold hand has gripped him by the diaphragm and begun squeezing a frigid reality into his chest.

With shaking hands, he opens his missed calls—658, what the hell—and skips right to the voice mails that have stuffed his inbox completely full. Beside him, Victor mumbles something about grass into his pillow.

Everybody he’s seemingly ever met has tried to reach him at some point during the night, and their messages are all variations of the same theme.

I've seen 3 way of interpreting the color cover: Death (obviously with how the chapter ended), Loss of Virginity (her offer to Kaneki when he's ready and /or considering sex as a way to get him to stay, and flowers used in poems and literature as a symbol of a young woman's virginity, lastly (and least likely to me) pregnancy (flowers also meaning new life, the red either meaning loss virginity or childbirth going along with Touka offer of sex resulting in a One Eyed Prince/Princess)

do u think this chapter is a death flag for touka?

do you think the blood splatter on the colour page might be hinting that mutsuki might stab touka with one of her knives or something?

Idk if anyone asked this before, but there’s been death flags already marked on touka from the latest chapter and I just want to know you’re opinion and what you think. Considering how the chapter ended, I’m really worried and concerned for her.

Hi! So according to the colored page of latest chapter. I guess you’ve seen the 3 possibilities of what might happen to Touka. I would like to hear what you think about it. I highly doubt that she would die, Ishida sensei doesn’t kill characters lightly especially if it doesn’t serve the story (which I think is applied on Touka right now). Also her expression in the picture doesn’t imply bad thing happening, but more like she’s happy? I mean even if she were to die I don’t think it will be now..

Or pregnancy.

Dude the stain on toukas stomach kinda looks like a ukaku kagune. What if the color page is implying pregnancy?

rebeccastarlight: The blood splatter on the cover page it also looks like she’s going to die from childbirth

I wasn’t really a believer of the cover page implying that Touka became pregnant, but I recently saw a reddit post about it. [You can probably find it on the front page.] So anyways, it talked about the poem Ishida made a year ago, “Her womb smelled like it was burnt”. Bad sign already, but if you go through the translated lyrics its even worse. It also straightforwardly says the children meant to be born, had died. Do you think that relates to whats happening now? ItAlsoWouldLeadToParallelling

Wow, this is a really popular question, huh? Well, really it’s two and a half questions: 1) Will Touka die next chapter? 2) Will Touka get pregnant? 2.5) Will it end tragically? But since they’re all related to the cover picture, I’ll answer them all here before saying what I think is going to happen.

Q: Will Touka die next chapter?

A: No way Jose. If I’ve learnt anything from all that I’ve ever read, watched or played, it’s that female deuteragonists are IMMORTAL. Even more so than protagonists on some occasions. Don’t worry about the death flags, because this arc will be a parallel of the original Anteiku Raid arc, and you know who had a ton of death flags back then and who Touka has been paralleling since the start of :re? Old man Yoshimura! Who, despite it all, is still alive (if not kickin’). Touka won’t die - it’s far more likely that she’s going to get captured like her predecessor, probably as bait for Kaneki.

Q: Will Touka get pregnant, and will it end in tragedy?

A: Unlikely. That would require a 9-month timeskip to pay off, and things are way too hectic in the story right now to allow for something like that. The alternative would be that it’s foreshadowing for the epilogue, but it seems a bit strange to do that so early on and before Kaneki and Touka have even done the deed. It’s also not something that really needs to be foreshadowed because it would be part of the denouement rather than the actual plot. I don’t think it’s ukaku kagune since Ishida always draws blood with artistic flair in his colour art, and the drops over her breasts are unmistakably blood. As for the flowers, those are Kaneki’s signature flower, sweet olives, and they represent him.

Where the stillbirth/death in childbirth theories are concerned, I really doubt Ishida would kill off Touka so needlessly in the story’s epilogue of all places, and killing the baby would be equally pointless as we’ve seen Kuzen and Ukina (moar parallels) manage it. As one of these anons has already said, Ishida always has a point to his tragedy; he wouldn’t just throw either of those things in at the story’s conclusion for the sake of squeezing our tear ducts, especially since it would have nothing to do with the plotline of Tokyo Ghoul and, again, an epilogue is supposed to unwind tension rather than wrack it up.

What I think is going to happen

I think the blood on her stomach is indicative of a wound inflicted by Mutsuki. But it’s not just going to be any wound that’ll regenerate in a week - I think that out of jealousy, Mutsuki is going to damage Touka’s womb beyond repair. Since Ghouls have high-speed regenerative abilities, the only way to ensure that the womb won’t grow back would be to tear it out of her body, or maybe even eat it (we’ve already seen Mutsuki feed from bodies, and it could serve to parallel Ayato eating her kakuhou in the original series). Sexual mutilation would fit Mutsuki’s parallels with Torso and Nutcracker, and Kaneki and Touka talking about sex foreshadows that specific calamity more than a general death - especially since we’ve seen how good Touka is with kids in Ch 120. It also allows the aforementioned poem to fit in -  “The children who were meant to be born, died” - referring to Touka’s ability to reproduce being robbed from her.

So I think sad times are ahead for Touka, but she will live on. And isn’t Hinami kind of her and Kaneki’s kid already?

Here’s an idea

Here’s an idea. All the “fans” who keep sending Marisha hate mail every week, and screaming on reddit about mistakes made on spell damage rolled at 11pm … don’t join us for the new campaign. CR clearly brings you no joy, so why keep at it? Find something that brings you joy.

I’ve hate-watched things in the past. I never sent people nasty messages, but I did spend a lot of time frustrated and angry. It wasn’t healthy. Why waste your time on something that only enrages you each week? It’s not worth it.

As a teen, I kinda fell into that whole like “screaming media critic is sarcastic about everything” entertainment pattern for a bit. People just tore things down with creative phrasing. It wasn’t cool to like things and especially not to love things.

Discovering that you CAN like things, and shout it from the rooftops, and share in that joy, has been a positive change in my media habits. I still watch things I don’t like, but I think about them critically. What works, what doesn’t? I still find joy.

CR has done things I didn’t like. CR has even done things I found offensive at times. I had honest conversations online with fellow fans and even the cast a few times that contained no insults and no death threats. It can be done. I promise you it can be done.

If you find yourself getting LIVID with rage every week that the show isn’t like your table/module/how you’d have done that encounter … it’s time to leave. Find something that doesn’t enrage you every week. There’s a million D&D streams and podcasts who’d love you as a fan.

I once hate-watched a show in college. It was absolutely vile. I ended up ranting on twitter every week, yelling at my TV, going to bed angry. It wasn’t good for me.  So I stopped watching that show. I only regretted not stopping sooner.

2/16/15 - 11/6/17

this is two and a half years of my art improvement. That may seem like forever but it can go by faster than you think.

Sounds crazy but I was eleven when I drew the first image. (Yep. I’m literally 13 years old right now.)

What I’m trying to say here, albeit really, really poorly, is that yes, with time, patience, practice and research you can improve your art vastly. What we say is true. Keep drawing, you hecks. You will make it. And you will always, always, always improve if you put the effort in.

Note: The reason for the not-so-exact dates (meaning that they don’t line up to exactly two and a half years) is because the older piece was the closest thing I could find to this newer piece.

IDK. I find this all CREEPY as hell and sure a fuck not something I’d be proud of doing. Theres a difference between owning your sexuality and doing shit that makes you just as bad as half the men out there who get their kicks by saying degrading and abusive things to women wihtout their consent. Funny how much they defend her for being hot yet if it wasnt someone ~hot~ they’d be calling her a weird fangirl.

What did sixpenceee do? I just went to their blog and found a bunch of paranormal and horror stuff, but there's a lot of people saying bad stuff about them and I'd like to know where it came from cause at first glance there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with their blog

the history of 6pee is long and tiresome. i’ll try and summarize it to the best of my ability, since it’s something i’ve seen progress for years.

6pee is a blog that gained a lot of popularity from reposting creepy pasta short stories and other “scary” things, usually stuff you’d find at the top of reddit pages. now, there’s already a lot of long standing issues with the classic formula for creepy pastas. namely, they often falsely portray and demonize mental illness or sexual abuse. if i remember correctly, some of the stories 6pee posted about were about ch!ld r@pe.

seeing that they were gaining a lot of followers fast, because sadly people love caricatures of mental illness, 6pee started to work on monetizing their blog. they make money off of stories they didn’t write themselves, and started making t-shirts using art they didn’t have permission to use.

to make matters worse, 6pee started to foster an image as being involved in mental health care. as far as anyone can find, they are not a licensed practitioner of mental health services nor are they even finished with any education for it. they’re one of those people who think it’s “interesting”.

so, here you have someone plagiarizing and monetizing stolen works that focus on demonizing people who have mental illness as being “scary” and a spectacle to behold, and now this person is trying to say it’s okay because they care about psychology.

now, i’m just grazing the surface here. there’s been numerous callouts, artists fighting to get their art taken down from the 6pee blog, writers shocked someone is making money off of their content that has had all sources removed, and actual people who have mental illnesses hurt and horrified by this person who happily shows them as monsters.

the moment i feel that best captures the true awfulness of 6pee’s blog was earlier this year when they attempted to do “S!xpenceee Cares”, an illegitimate service they attempted to provide where they were asking people to send them forty dollars alongside filling out a survey for personal information regarding their mental health and emotional state so that 6pee could “give them help” by just… emailing them.

6pee was trying to say they could provide mental health services without a license, and were happy to take advantage of the very same mentally ill people they villainized. The whole scam was quickly shut down thanks to people swiftly pointing it out for what it was, a scam, but 6pee continues to try and present themselves as some knowledgeable representative, which they’re not.

oh also their family owns a child slave! like holy shit!!! they’ve tried saying the kid is fine but oh my god!

so, all in all, 6pee is a jerk who wants to take your money.

"He is a big reylo"??? You know JJ has literally said in no uncertain terms that he doesn't understand or support reylo right??

Trigger warning for mentions of rape. Stay happy fam.

So I spent an hour trying to find JJ talking about reylo, and couldn’t find a single thing. Weird huh? Here’s me searching for it.

The top result is a reddit page talking about reylo… Awkward. Further down the page there was Vanity Fair article. Let’s read it.

Nope. Nothing about them in there. Weird. Okay, let’s try something else.

Nope. Huh? It’s all just tumblr. Okay, maybe he didn’t “say” reylo.

I am now going to read all the articles on the first page.

From IGN  “One of the new relationships that we were focusing on was between Kylo Ren and Rey,” J.J. Abrams

Nothing in any of them. So I’m going to assume you’re talking about the interrogation (rape?) scene. Which, fuck, if you are, I’m so happy about. I’ve wanted to write about this for ages. So let’s do it.

The Interrogation (rape?) Scene

Okay, other people in this fandom often use the argument, that he did the same thing to Poe, and that Rey invades his mind back, sooooo? How is it rape? Well. I’m here to point out, that that’s not how scene coding works. Coding it as a rape doesn’t mean that now every time someone uses the force to go into someones mind that it’s rape. it means J.J. doesn’t understand the implications of a word like RAPE. I can’t believe I have to point this out, but I guess I do?

After the movie Daniel and I were able to give our reviews to JJ himself over the phone! Daniel was so funny and honest, and he did love the movie! One review he told JJ was: When Kylo is trying to use the force to read Reys mind, Daniel was drifting in and out and thought it was a rape scene in his mind. Turns out he was awake enough, he told JJ it seemed like a rape scene! I was mortified and apologized to JJ cause I didn’t get a sexual rape feel; turns out Daniel knew what he was talking about even with all that medication he was on, JJ said, well he is right, it is a violent mind rape. After talking with JJ Abrams they packed up and went back to California.

Here’s the quote. Took a while to find it. It was taken down I think. I’d like to draw you’re attention to a few things here.

“he told JJ it seemed like a rape scene!”

“it is a violent mind rape.”

I cringe every time I read that’s it’s so juvenile. Here’s my problem with this. Only men could have this discussion. J.J. doesn’t understand the constant threat of rape that hangs by a thread over every woman’s head. As evidenced by the only woman present.

“I was mortified and apologized to JJ cause I didn’t get a sexual rape feel”

J.J. is probably the kind of guy who says his ears are being raped when he hears music he doesn’t like. If I worked with him I would have slapped him for that shit. At the end of the day J.J. saying yes to it being coded as rape, the truth is he probably didn’t hear “Disgusting violation of ones body.” He heard. “Sexual.”

When I hear rape, I think of something un imaginably disgusting. When J.J. hears it in that context, and writes, “I can take whatever I want” he probably thinks of this.

Do you see what I mean? That’s the shitty truth of it. Rape doesn’t mean what it means to you and me. To them it probably meant, “monster carry away pretty girl. Monster like pretty girl.” More evidence below. The whole movie taps into classic shit like this.

And sadly this is classic shit. Kylo has both been referred to as a monster and a prince.

Rape doesn’t mean rape to them. And that really pisses me off. We could debate about Reylo until the cows come home. So how about instead, we agree two old-ish white guys don’t understand what it means to say RAPE, and all get outraged at that.

I don’t think anyone has ever taken this stance on the scene before. So maybe i hugely wrong. But I thought I’d put this out here anyway. Let’s hope what I wrote made sense.

I’d also like to add that while I wrote this, I was listening to a new reylo playlist I’m putting together.

Would you still send nudes?

Of course! It doesn’t bother me that people have seen/have my nudes.

But I hope those people are respectful of my privacy and keep them to themselves.

There’s a huge difference between me sending those types of pictures to people I want to have them versus posting them publicity or having someone post them on my behalf without my permission.

Someone threatened me anonymously to “leak” my nudes the other week and that is just a sad, sad thing. I mean, like I said, I don’t care that people have seen/have saved my nudes. There was a time I posted on reddit quite frequently (and even on here). But those photos have since been deleted (and yes I know nothing is truly ever deleted from the internet) but I deleted them bc I’m at a different stage of my life and I just hope those people who have saved those images or know where to find them keep that to themselves.

We’re all human. We all deserve respect.

I'm a Search and Rescue Officer for the US Forest Service, I have some stories to tell - r/nosleep

I wasn’t sure where else to post these stories, so I figured I’d share them here. I’ve been an SAR officer for a few years now, and along the way I’ve seen some things that I think you guys will be interested in.

I have a pretty good track record for finding missing people. Most of the time they just wander off the path, or slip down a small cliff, and they can’t find their way back. The majority of them have heard the old ‘stay where you are’ thing, and they don’t wander far. But I’ve had two cases where that didn’t happen. Both bother me a lot, and I use them as motivation to search even harder on the missing persons cases I get called on. The first was a little boy who was out berry-picking with his parents. He and his sister were together, and both of them went missing around the same time. Their parents lost sight of them for a few seconds, and in that time both the kids apparently wandered off. When their parents couldn’t find them, they called us, and we came out to search the area. We found the daughter pretty quickly, and when we asked where her brother was, she told us that he’d been taken away by 'the bear man.’ She said he gave her berries and told her to stay quiet, that he wanted to play with her brother for a while. The last she saw of her brother, he was riding on the shoulders of 'the bear man’ and seemed calm. Of course, our first thought was abduction, but we never found a trace of another human being in that area. The little girl was also insistent that he wasn’t a normal man, but that he was tall and covered in hair, 'like a bear’, and that he had a 'weird face.’ We searched that area for weeks, it was one of the longest calls I’ve ever been on, but we never found a single trace of that kid. The other was a young woman who was out hiking with her mom and grandpa. According to the mother, her daughter had climbed up a tree to get a better view of the forest, and she’d never come back down. They waited at the base of the tree for hours, calling her name, before they called for help. Again, we searched everywhere, and we never found a trace of her. I have no idea where she could possibly have gone, because neither her mother or grandpa saw her come down.

A few times, I’ve been out on my own searching with a canine, and they’ve tried to lead me straight up cliffs. Not hills, not even rock faces. Straight, sheer cliffs with no possible handholds. It’s always baffling, and in those cases we usually find the person on the other side of the cliff, or miles away from where the canine has led us. I’m sure there’s an explanation, but it’s sort of strange.

One particularly sad case involved the recovery of a body. A nine-year-old girl fell down an embankment and got impaled on a dead tree at the base. It was a complete freak accident, but I’ll never forget the sound her mother made when we told her what had happened. She saw the body bag being loaded into the ambulance, and she let out the most haunting, heart-broken wail I’ve ever heard. It was like her whole life was crashing down around her, and a part of her had died with her daughter. I heard from another SAR officer that she killed herself a few weeks after it happened. She couldn’t live with the loss of her daughter.

I was teamed up with another SAR officer because we’d received reports of bears in the area. We were looking for a guy who hadn’t come home from a climbing trip when he was supposed to, and we ended up having to do some serious climbing to get to where we figured he’d be. We found him trapped in a small crevasse with a broken leg. It was not pleasant. He’d been there for almost two days, and his leg was very obviously infected. We were able to get him into a chopper, and I heard from one of the EMTs that the guy was absolutely inconsolable. He kept talking about how he’d been doing fine, and when he’d gotten to the top, a man had been there. He said the guy had no climbing equipment, and he was wearing a parka and ski pants. He walked up to the guy, and when the guy turned around, he said he had no face. It was just blank. He freaked out, and ended up trying to get off the mountain too fast, which is why he’d fallen. He said he could hear the guy all night, climbing down the mountain and letting out these horrible muffled screams. That story bothered the hell out of me. I’m glad I wasn’t there to hear it.

One of the scariest things I’ve ever had happen to me involved the search for a young woman who’d gotten separated from her hiking group. We were out until late at night, because the dogs had picked up her scent. When we found her, she was curled up under a large rotted log. She was missing her shoes and pack, and she was clearly in shock. She didn’t have any injuries, and we were able to get her to walk with us back to base ops. Along the way, she kept looking behind us and asking us why 'that big man with black eyes’ was following us. We couldn’t see anyone, so we just wrote it off as some weird symptom of shock. But the closer we got to base, the more agitated this woman got. She kept asking me to tell him to stop 'making faces’ at her. At one point she stopped and turned around and started yelling into the forest, saying that she wanted him to leave her alone. She wasn’t going to go with him, she said, and she wouldn’t give us to him. We finally got her to keep moving, but we started hearing these weird noises coming from all around us. It was almost like coughing, but more rhythmic and deeper. It was almost insect-like, I don’t really know how else to describe it. When we were within site of base ops, the woman turns to me, and her eyes are about as wide as I can imagine a human could open them. She touches my shoulder and says 'He says to tell you to speed up. He doesn’t like looking at the scar on your neck.’ I have a very small scar on the base of my neck, but it’s mostly hidden under my collar, and I have no idea how this woman saw it. Right after she says it, I hear that weird coughing right in my ear, and I just about jumped out of my skin. I hustled her to ops, trying not to show how freaked out I was, but I have to say I was really happy when we left the area that night.

This is the last one I’ll tell, and it’s probably the weirdest story I have. Now, I don’t know if this is true in every SAR unit, but in mine, it’s sort of an unspoken, regular thing we run into. You can try asking about it with other SAR officers, but even if they know what you’re talking about, they probably won’t say anything about it. We’ve been told not to talk about it by our superiors, and at this point we’ve all gotten so used to it that it doesn’t even seem weird anymore. On just about every case where we’re really far into the wilderness, I’m talking 30 or 40 miles, at some point we’ll find a staircase in the middle of the woods. It’s almost like if you took the stairs in your house, cut them out, and put them in the forest. I asked about it the first time I saw some, and the other officer just told me not to worry about it, that it was normal. Everyone I asked said the same thing. I wanted to go check them out, but I was told, very emphatically, that I should never go near any of them. I just sort of ignore them now when I run into them because it happens so frequently
