the things I watch for Kerry

Olivia Carolyn Pope Appreciation Post

What We Talk About When We Talk About YA

Hello!  My name is Kerri Miller Christopher Beha AO Scott Ruth Graham Nathaniel Hawthorne Socrates Bob and I’m here to tell you that we’re all going to hell.  HELL. Why, you ask?  Well, let me expound upon it in a million-word screed that I will make as condescending as possible: because you’re reading and watching things I think are stupid.

Did you know your behavior signifies a decline in greater civilization?  You should. No, it doesn’t matter that I’ve never read the stupid things you’re reading.  I am the last adult in America.

I see you and your secret, childish acronyms. YA? MG? TFIOS? I had look up this stuff on the World Wide Web and I’m still confused. I’m a person of a certain age and I’ve been left out of the cultural conversation.  My feelings about this should mean more than they actually do.

I know this will upset people, but I don’t understand why anyone over the age of six is reading books for children.  When I was in kindergarten, my favorite book was OLD MAN AND THE SEA. Old men are grown-ups, and that’s what I wanted to be: an old man wrestling with a fish. Also, reading it was horrible, and no one who is a grown-up ever reads for pleasure, because reading for pleasure is stupid. Just ask all those guys reading Dean Koontz and Lee Child. They’re in it for the metaphors.

Fellow grown-ups, at the risk of sounding snobbish and joyless and old, well, look, I am all those things but you should hear me out anyway, because I have opinions. LISTEN. It’s time to center the cultural conversation back where it belongs: on me. All YA is silly, sentimental and simple and I know this because mostly ladies write it and no one should make that much money from books about a vampire.

All of you are YouTubing right now, aren’t you?  You’re totally YouTubing.  Stop that.

This is what I’m trying to say: I’m concerned for you. I say these things out of love, not a love for clicks.  I am sad that you are reading YA fiction when you could be reading fiction for adults, because it’s never occurred to me that you can read both.  Actually, I think there’s a law.

Except for the times I am binge-watching Mad Men and waxing nostalgic for a time that never was and a patriarchy that never died, I only read very smart, literary fiction that is complex and important, the kind of smart fiction that YA can never be, because I said so.  Reading this important kind of grown-up fiction cleans out your colon. It puts hair on your chest. It’s like trying to open a locked door using only your head.  It’s supposed to hurt.  It breaks your teeth, knocks you unconscious and leaves cuts and bruises on your face and your body broken, like Hemingway fresh from the war. Don’t you want to be like Hemingway fresh from the war?  Of course you do, because he was an old white man, on the sea, with a fish. These can be your battle scars, too. Wear them proudly. You are a grown-up.

“Hands, Miss Fisher.”

“Are exactly where they ought to be, Jack.”

Whoops, my hand slipped and I drew some Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries fan art.

Man, do I love these two. And everyone else in this series. And the whole show. It’s high on my list of Things I Really, Really Want to Force All the People to Watch for a number of reasons, most notably:

  • Delightfully over-the-top, period murder mysteries
  • Chock-a-block awesome ladies
  • A loving, close-knit “family,” (gathered and nurtured by Queen Awesome Lady herself, Miss Phryne Fisher,) made up of characters that are really easy to adore
  • Gorgeous costuming and sets
  • Created and produced by women, (Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger,) and based on a series of novels written by a woman, (Kerry Greenwood.)
  • Plus it’s just plain fun and charming and super-enjoyable to watch.
  • Plus-plus, the two current series are available on Netflix for USA folk.

Phantom Movies Masterpost

I could be doing other useful things right now.  Things with deadlines.  Instead, here’s a collection of links for old Phantom movies - just in time for me to waste more time watching them instead of doing coursework!

The Phantom of the Opera, 1925, with Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin and Norman Kerry.  This is a “restored” version with cleaned up sound and color tinting, but still the silent classic it has always been in terms of dialogue plates.

Ye ban ge sheng (Song at Midnight), 1937, with Jin Shan, Hu Ping and Chau-Shui Yee.  One of the classics of early Chinese cinema, and a very different take on the Phantom story!  Make sure to click the “CC” button if you would like some (terrible but still helpful if you don’t speak Mandarin) English subtitles.

Phantom of the Opera1943, with Claude Rains, Susanna Foster, Nelson Eddy and Edgar Barrier.  Fantastic singing, two Raouls, and a Christine who is tired of everyone’s shenanigans.

The Climax, 1944, with Boris Karloff, Susanna Foster and Turhan Bey.  This was originally conceived as a sequel to the 1943 movie, but when Claude Rains declined, it was reimagined into a vehicle for horror legend Boris Karloff.  Its origins as a Phantom story are still super obvious, though!

Phantom of the Paradise1974, with William Finley, Jessica Harper and Paul Williams.  A psychedelic rock opera version of the story that is as ridiculous as it is occasionally profound.  Also, the guy from the Muppets.

KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park, 1978, with KISS.  This is exactly what it sounds like and no matter how amazing you might imagine it is, I promise, it is even more glorious than that.

The Phantom of the Opera1983, with Maximilian Schell, Jane Seymour and Michael York.  Filmed on location in Budapest, featuring two Christines, a fluffy cat, and a Phantom wielding an axe.

Opera1987, with Urbano Barberini, Cristina Marsillach and Ian Charleson.  A horror movie take on the story, not for the faint of heart or squeamish.  For bonus points, an Italian movie that is dubbed in English and then presented here with Italian subtitles.

The Phantom of the Opera, 1987, from animation studio Emerald City.  The only fully hand-animated version of the Phantom story out there; very close to the original book, with a low-budget charm.

Phantom of the Mall1988, with Derek Rydall, Kari Whitman and Rob Estes.  If you click on this link, prepare for terrible 1980s horror, utter cheesiness, and an amazing theme song (not good, but definitely amazing).

The Phantom of the Opera, 1989, with Robert Englund, Jill Schoelen and Alex Hyde-White.  The most horror-centric film version yet that didn’t also rewrite the plot beyond recognition, but surprisingly spiritually faithful to some of Leroux’s ideas.

The Phantom of the Opera, 1990, with Charles Dance, Teri Polo and Adam Storke.  The same plot as the Yeston/Kopit musical but without the songs, and Charles Dance Charles Dance-ing all over the place delightfully.

Popcorn, 1991, with Tom Villard, Jill Schoelen and Derek Rydall.  A surprisingly scary modern version of the story with a constant stream of running gags and ridiculous pranks.

I’m not going to post any super recent movies, since I’m sure y'all can find those without my help… but enjoy some classic goodness if you’re in the mood for popcorn and a night of old-timey fun!

Who is really forcing the ships in RWBY?

I’ve watched RWBY since the very start, and everytime I go on Tumblr it’s the exact same things. “I’m sick of these forced hetero ships! Make them gay!”

But you know who really forces ships in the RWBY? It’s not Miles, or Kerry or anyone at Roosterteeth. It’s YOU RWBY fandom.

It is true. You print out all these fanarts of gay relationships, of the characters. Then freak out when what is normally a friendly gesture you take it as romance. How about this for an example?

Ruby: Ah! Where is my pen!

Weiss: Here, you just dropped it. You need to be more careful you dunce.

So yeah, I think I have made my point.

News flash people. Sun x Blake is NOT forced. They have built up their relationship for three volumes, they have known each other for almost a year, and it’s clear Blake is more comfortable with him.

The CRWBY have said there will be LGBT characters soon. So instead of whining, just be patient. And stop claiming ships in the show are forced when you people are no better.

No wonder Tony is all giddy  and “oh it’s great!!” about the beginning of the season. Kerry seems pretty happy, too (look ay Kerlivia’s smile)

Tony’s thumb is always somehow involved in things. It’s always the one adding that extra NPB method messy touch.

Made me make Scandal gifs after ages.

PS: don’t think I am fooled by this for a second re: plot or watching live. Desperation shows when they put out this stuff. They know it’s literally the only thing that will make people so much as consider watching. But this is something to discuss for NPB reasons as far as I’m concerned.

Tony and Kerry, ok I see you now...

Let me start off by saying while I will readily admit that my primary reason for watching Scandal is and always has been because of Olitz I have never until very recently (the last few days) entertained much thought about Tony and Kerry’s off screen relationship.  I mean I always gave Kerry Washington the side eye when she said she didn’t enjoy making love scenes with Tony and I always thought that there was a strong mutual attraction but I guess I didn’t really give it much thought about where things were going with them off screen.  That changed a few days ago.

Just to give you some background, since Olitz was the major draw for me on Scandal and since we all know that nothing substantial has been going on with that story really since Season 2 I had basically given up the show after Olivia threw that ring in Fitz’s face.  I certainly haven’t been keeping up with the Scandal press circuit much.  When I saw on Twitter everyone going crazy about the Scandal Finale I of course watched the finale and rewatched, and rewatched, and rewatched…*you get my point* that Olitz ending scene.  In one episode I was hooked back into Scandal and more importantly Olitz.

Well y’all I’ve been on vacation the last couple weeks and had more time to catch up on the Scandal cast interviews and can I just say that I saw some things that have me looking at Tony and Kerry with new eyes now (Tony and Kerry I see you…).

For me the thing that got me looking at them differently was the video from Paley fest when Bellamy and Tony interrupted Kerry’s interview.  First thing that made me say what the…was the way Kerry looked when she said “Hi” to Tony like I know this man didn’t just walk by without speaking to me.  Then I saw the look on Tony’s face when he kissed her on the cheek and hugged her, I mean the man’s face visibly changed like he had the biggest treasure in his arms.  That’s the moment where I said OMG there is something much more there.  You can’t make up those reactions.

Thanks to some helpful Olitzers on twitter who I’d been following for some time but had no idea they stayed up to date on all things Terry I’ve gone back and watched the other Paley fest videos and the famous NAACP awards video and some past tweets between the two.  I’ve also read several blind items to which some I believe and some I’m not sure I believe.  Bottom line is yes I think Tony and Kerry are in some sort of romantic relationship.  The exact nature of that relationship only they know and it is their business to tell or not tell the public. I do think there is mutual love, respect, passion, and friendship between them in that relationship.

This helps me understand why that Olitz pairing has resonated with me so much.  I mean I have never seen so much chemistry in a TV pairing ever.  I think both Kerry and Tony are phenomenal actors AND I think to top that off they are bringing a little extra bit of themselves and their off screen chemistry to the role.

Kerry and Tony, I see you.  Congratulations as it looks like the two of you may have found something that most of us only hope for in a lifetime.  I’m truly happy for you both.  Thanks for giving us this awesome couple Olitz and I wish the two of you nothing but more love, respect, and passion to last a lifetime!

i hate

The YouTube comment section for Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter is literally a peice of shit.

Like, fuck.

Every week they find someone to shit on for no fucking reason.

“What? Lindsay’s in a things to do? Fucking blasphemy!”

“Eew, it’s that little shit Kerry, I guess I’m not watching this video.”

“Fuck, I hate Ryan. He tries too hard with his whole ‘mad king’ shit and always kills everyone for no reason. He ruins the let’s plays, I liked it better without him!”

Guess what you fucking ingrown ballsacks? they don’t give a flying fuck.

Most of the commenters are a bunch of self entitled cunts who believes that every little thing they don’t like should be voiced, every fucking negative opinion should be expressed because of “freedom of speech”.

Fine, freedom of fucking speech. Voice your petty opinion, but do you really have to be a goddamn cunt about it? These people actually read the YouTube comments in hope that maybe there’s a few people that actually has constructive criticism or new ideas, but instead they find a bunch of dumb shitheads talking down a member as if they personally fucking know them .

Now you may be wondering, “Why are you so suddenly mad, Jackie? What has caused you to be so angry at something that we knew for years?”

It’s because this, literal fucking comments straight off of YouTube from the newest Things to Do: Bottleneck [because the people there don’t know how to break out of there sheltered, sexist fucking world and adapt to change].

”Remember in middle or early high school where you had a close poise of friends, and you did nothing but kick ass 24/7 with perfect chemistry. But, then one friend starts to want to invite their girlfriend over to your usual jam fests. And she is cool and everyone is friends, but she just messes up the vibe a little bit, and doesn’t really add anything to the group as a whole. The whole thing is weird cause she just kinda throws random movie references around strangely trying to fit in….. That is Lindsey.”

“I just dont think they understand how quickly things can go wrong for RT and AH [if they keep Lindsay in the videos], they need to keep things perfect. If she starts being in Minecraft videos (their literal bread and butter) that might be bad…"

"Did anyone else see that Lindsay was in this video and sighed?"

”What the fuck is Lindsay doing in the video? And why the fuck is she not using a Sanchez?”

"Does Lindsay have to be in every video now?"

"omg y does Lindsay gotta be in this video she is soo annoyin…..”

Scandal 502: My Ramblings.

I will try and be concise but I am not great with words. I have watched it twice now and my opinion changed the second time. It still wasn’t as strong as last week but I get it and what it was meant to be.

So lets get to the thing that had us debating all week:

The Leak

the leak wasn’t the arc, it wasn’t a big deal, I get that and I am glad. It didn’t matter who did it but it was obvious it was Liz, and I kind of which it wasn’t that obvious, but thats beside the point. Its the bigger picture.

Now the episode…

The concept

I get the point of this episode. Olivia needed time away and a break to collect her thoughts and figure out what she wanted to do, she was also terrified. She needed to focus on work (her coping mechanism), so she can decide what’s best for her. Did I wish she stayed and sorted it with Fitz? YES. Would that have been plausible? Probably not.

Mellie Grant

Why the fuck does Mellie Grant still think her and Fitz are a team? My brain hurts. I dont know if it is just stupid ass writing or if she is THAT delusional. She wants an apology? Bitch please, grow the fuck up. Wouldn’t any self respecting woman want to get out of that marriage and build a self respecting career to go off on your own. She really is not going to go without a fight but I dont get why she would want remain in that situation.

Again I loved the way Fitz dealt with her. Smooth, calm and collected. He has lost all fucks to give when it comes to her and when he said

“Everything, is about your presidential run” - I was like,

She won’t ever work for her own success and wants others to do it for her. You’ve spent 1 week as a senator, you need to earn your keep. Not here for it.

Susan Ross

She is so naive. I thought she would be good for Fitz after the Brandon Bill, and I still think she could be but she wasn’t feeling it.  Hilarious when she thought the pictures were fake though.

Fitz - “ I am not ashamed, I am not hiding”

He has always wanted to be honest and open and people have always stopped him. This is what I love about him and I really like that moment where he reminded Susan that behind closed doors he is just a man with a heart and flaws like everybody else.

Cyrus once said to Olivia

“Some men weren’t born to be happy, they were born to be great” - (107).

This is technically what Susan is saying to him now

“You don’t get to be just anyone else”

but this time he isn’t taking it. He is not letting his presidency take control of his heart and he is letting himself be the man.

I still think Susan could be a good person for Fitz to have but we will see in due time…

I hate how Cyrus still treats fitz like a fucking kid. Cyrus manipulating the situation through Abby is not too different from how Olivia used to manipulate goings on in the White House through Cyrus, when he needed her. Olivia did it to help Fitz, help the country. Cyrus, nope, he is there for one person, himself and he has found Abby as his new puppet to work with. Cyrus is a dog without a leash and he grasping at all straws he can to gain any semblance of power and control back.

I dont know where they are going with him but he loves the republic and the presidency more than anything, and we have seen him break Olitz apart before to try and salvage that and he’d do it again. I don’t know how he will get back into the WH but I expect it to come from the demise of Liz/Abby through some subtle manipulation and string pulling.

Do I care where is character goes so much?

So here for Quinn shading Huck the entire time, 90% of what she did I was happy with, and also shading jakes ability to help Huck, here for it.

Reconnecting with Huck at the end? Not so much. I get that they want to try and rebuild OPA but Huck needs to be put down. A few years ago I would have said that Olivia needs Huck more than anyone, now, not so much. He is just boring now and with him he brings the stench of BS13.

So they going with this Huckleberry Quinn psycho couple thing again? Boring, but fine.

The case of the week

The case was clearly a fella to take Olivia out of Washington and give her time and breathing space. Was it the strongest case? No, and I prefer when they have strong parallels or ties to what is going in Olivia’s life or the WH. The parallel here, two people:

OPA needs a revamp. It is all over the place and I think that is where Marcus Walker will come in, but also why they made Huck and Quinn kiss and make up.

Looks like Joke is going to be part of OPA ….What a surprise there. As far as i’m aware he has no training in the law, so he is another huck. But he is a shitter spy and can’t hack, so what will he be… Oliva’s proxy shrink. Grow some balls you pathetic ass and find something to stand on your own two feet.

If they’re going to keep him at least give him a credible role for him stand alone with. I called it from the TGIT promo vids that he’d be there with them.

Oliva and Jake

I HATE to combine them but I feel they need to be discussed together here.

Firstly Joke: “…Or has something changed” - Don’t make Olivia feel bad and doubt her love?

The coffee shop scene: I knew that punk ass kid would rat them out.

I really felt that you saw her fear in this scene when she was recognised and I think having Jake there, sadly, meant that she got out safely, and without anyone else there I don’t know if that would have been possible.

Although once again he is made the hero blah blah blah. But that’s not the point for this.

The first time Olivia has breathing space is when she is in that motel room by herself, you can see for the first time that she is completely overwhelmed and struggling with herself and what she wants to do. I never once doubted that she wouldn’t go back to fitz in this episode, except a tiny part of me after that answerphone, but she really did need the space to sort out her head and decide for herself how she wanted to handle it.

She has the voices of the two men who she believes control her, surrounding her; one controls the heart and the other in the past has controlled her mind. With fitz however, you could say he takes over her heart and mind. Jake’s voice was just a reminder that she does love him and she can chose him.

Voices from her dad - “First Lady” “Mediocre” (301 when she was forced to leave) - I don’t know if part of her fears are regarding what will happen when she is in the White House. She doesn’t want to lose the name she has built for herself in her line of work and become the statue that Mellie refers to earlier on. She is the “formidable Olivia Pope” and if the White House are clever they could sue that to their advantage.

She then has Fitz’s profession of love battling with that.

Props to Kerry here, she really did it well. She can teach BY a few things about a fake cry:

The bed scene:

Jake is her shrink. I have no words

“Did my father teach you that” - she still has a lot cynicism when it comes to Jake because she knows he is a product of her father.

I know Olivia wouldn’t cheat on fitz now, I know she wouldn’t but when she said “can we, would you mind?” I was like what the fucking fuck?

Even spooning someone is too much when you are seeing somebody else. It is a very intimate thing and you don’t do it with everybody or anybody. I get that she wanted to feel safe and some comfort but no, Jake being that spoon…

They could have laid on their backs touching, or he could have maybe held her hand for a few minutes for reassurance but this was too much for me.

She’s running from the shame, not from fitz, not from the love.

Jake, for the rarest of times said something that I liked : “loving the president isn’t a crime” I hate him, I do but from him it shows his acceptance that the president is just a human being as well, and so is she. They are two human beings in the scariest of circumstances. I want to believe that this was a mature moment for Jake because he knows he was always playing second fiddle to Fitz, so in that pea-sized brain of his, I want to think this is growth. I may eat my words later on.

I know this is a bit jumbled up but I wanted to include the Truman balcony scene here. For the 70% of this episode I felt sorry for Abby, again she is in too deep but with nothing she could do.

But this balcony scene annoyed me (side note: how is she just allowed to walk freely through the residence?)

“You know who she is with” - trying to get fitz angry and jealous all over again… Abby I was rooting for you.

I thought Abby would want her friend to be happy after the hell she has seen her go through, but instead of trying to placate the situation she is fuelling it for her own power and control. Selfish ass bitch. Over a cliff my ass. Liv will not take this lightly and I was rooting for their friendship this season. Olivia may not have been okay with that kind of life last year the year before or even the year before that but now things are different. She wants to stand in the light she wants to openly love him she is just scared to do so, but like Jake said loving him is not a crime and that is something she has to deal with and accept herself.

Abby placing seeds of doubt in Fitz’s mind like Cyrus and Mellie used to do. Bitch not here for it.

Abby and Liz a team, is it them vs Olivia and Fitz? never saw that coming. Abby is taking control and power back to her job and knows that working with Liz will help the both of them, but she now has one over on Liz, like her ex boss she “always has cards left to play”. They’re both being undermined but now they will both be in the know and it will give them both a lot more power.

Thing is, there is only one woman that has control of that WH and it is Olivia Pope and when she gets on the tail end of this, she will be pissed!

I know I have mentioned him already but just some extra things and that phone call with Mellie.

I do like that the whole episode Fitz was giving Liv time to breathe because he does know her and knows what she is like. He didnt pressure her or hound her. I do wish there had been more communication between them but that would’ve been easily to hide and easily tracked and it was probably not the way to go about it at that moment.

“I apologise come home” at this point I want to throw everything at my computer screen. What pisses me off the most, is every time fitz thinks that she isn’t going to come back or he is losing her, he returns to Mellie and accepts that as his life.

He can still divorce her without Olivia being there. The whole point was the divorce and nothing to do with Olivia and that shouldn’t change things now. We obviously hadn’t heard the answerphone message he left for her at this point but I still think regardless he could’ve divorced Mellie, getting that divorce is for him more than anyone else.

The Answer Phone Message

This reminded me of Fitz in 417 with the DouxBeBe ring when he says “I just want you to be happy”

He is willing to love her from a far if that is what will make her happy. He has always wanted her, he will always want her, and he will do whatever we can to have her and be with her, but he knows it has to be what she wants and is willing to accept if it isnt.

I was so fricking proud of them by the end of this episode.

And then I was ready to pack it in and be depressed forever thinking

But then the thing I predicted would happen, happened, the saving grace of a mediocre episode, our baby said it, she took it and admitted to it.

“Olivia, are you the presidents mistress?”

She wants him she, wants him enough to face the fight and weather the storm with him, they can do it together.
