college witch tips!

being a witch and living in a tiny dorm or apartment is a hassle… but here’s some (cheap and easy) tips to make your life a lot easier coming from a college witch!

quick note: if you are a student, you can get six months free of amazon prime with a student email account, and from then on out prime is only $50 instead of $100! amazon is a great place for tons of cheaper witchy resources (and really worth it for textbooks).

💎 crystals! whether you’re sharing a room with someone or in a room by yourself, plenty of people collect and use crystals. check for local flea markets or see if there is an occult shop in your area, there’s bound to be some there. great starter crystals are clear quartz (an essential crystal), amethyst, and rose quartz!

📚 the library! your school library will have some sort of resources. also don’t worry about people thinking you’re strange for checking out books on magick… i promise they don’t care!

🕯 candles and incense! when i lived in a dorm, i hated not being able to light candles and burn incense. invest in some battery powered candles! you can get packs at local dollar stores or walmarts. as for aroma related magick, purchase some oils and mix them with some salt water and spray them around your room! oil warmers or wax warmers are also wonderful alternatives.

📖 a grimoire/book of shadows! i highly suggest keeping a personal book. no, you don’t have to get some elaborate leather bound book that came straight out of hocus pocus for it to be legit. you could find a sketchbook somewhere, use a three ring binder, or buy a hardback book at a thrift store and paint over the pages! your book is what you make of it. it is your own novel of personal magical experiences and knowledge, so make it your own!

🌵 plants! invest in cacti and succulents especially if you are a beginner or live in a tight space, they’re easy to manage throughout the rough mishaps and late nights of school work. cacti are great for protection and banishing negativity, where succulents bring love and healing. both plants can represent the ability to survive through conditions others cannot. if you have a balcony, take advantage!

⚗️ jars! now is a great time to collect containers from thrift stores, gather old pickle jars, and look for sales and coupons craft stores may have since most of them will have all sorts of neat jars.

🔮 an altar! if you don’t have a roommate to worry about, great! do your thing. if you do (and the don’t exactly seem cool with the whole witch thing), you can make a subtle altar of candles, crystals, and some plants or flowers. they don’t have to be elaborate. you could keep a small altar in a shoe box or draw one in your bos/grimoire! get creative!

✍️ sigils! use sigils. abuse sigils. put them everywhere. write them in binders or on your skin, write them on sticky notes or ripped paper and put them places you’ll see them or bury them outside. sleep with a protective one under your pillow. there’s so many things to do and its so easy to use them!

🎨 get creative! you can make crystals out of salt (another thing you should invest in), learn how to read playing cards if you can’t afford a tarot deck, and never forget you can find the coolest things at thrift stores. paint can be your best friend!

☕️ tea and coffee! a keurig is a wonderful investment. whether you like coffee or tea, it gives you boiling water fast without leaving a dorm. enchant your keurig and remind yourself of the properties in your drink to help you learn.

✨ decorating! take advantage of things like twinkle lights and washi tape! if you don’t know about washi tape, its a decorating tape that does not damage walls. create constellations or sigils with washi tape on your walls! amazon also sells many cheap tapestries. give yourself a comfortable and pleasant space to live and work!

⏳ plan! enchant your planners to help you remember due dates, and while you’re at it, keep track of moon phases and other events! many calendars will tell you when full moons are.

⚖️ meditate! this is something i find very important to stay sane during hard semesters. if you have a roommate, maybe meditate in the morning or late at night laying in bed. you could also meditate when they have classes. its okay if you cant every day, but its important to remember to save time for you.

🏃‍♀️ walks! if you live in a dorm there’s a big chance you’ll be walking to class. enjoy these walks with nature, read outside every now and again, but make sure that you are always safe.

⏱ take your time! you do not have to collect all of these things in a week, month, or even year. witchcraft is all about intent and energy. you hold the power, the items are only there to help. manifest your own power, collect at your own pace.

🔎research! always research properties of things. buy cheap dried herbs from grocery stores and work with them, figure out what to put in your coffee to help you with your day, and learn how to enchant crystals to help you feel a little more confident about your studies. most importantly, learn to balance your studies and your witchy research, and don’t let witchcraft get in the way of your schoolwork. school should come first always!

i hope this helped some of you college witches, new and experienced! i am always open to answer questions! happy casting!

So I've been very lazy with my studying toward witch craft and therefore I'm going back to the beginning~ lol. Any advice for a little witch?

Some Advice for Getting Started:

*Start with things that interest you!*

I know i get terribly bored very quickly (gemini curse lmao) so i find that if i dive into stuff i’m interested in learning about, that it will tend to hold my attention longer and help me get back into the swing of things! So in my example one of my first things i researched when i was starting out was about Crystals and their properties/uses in magic! From there i was able to use that as a sort of base jumping off point for my magical practice! And if you find something you were learning about doesn’t seem like it fits you/your style/ your practice then drop it and move on to the next thing!

*Ask Questions!*

No Questions Are Stupid Questions  No Questions Are Stupid Questions  No Questions Are Stupid Questions!!!! Questions mean you care enough to try and learn more about something! I’m pretty much always here and will try my best to answer as best as i am able And if I can’t i will do my best to help direct you to someone more knowledgeable!

*TAKE YOUR TIME!*

This one is important because most of the time i feel like i see baby/beginner witches try really REALLY hard to “reach the same level” as other witches as quickly as possible when in reality that just hurts THEIR path in the long run. Your path is your own, take it at your own pace. Enjoy the little bumps along the way and find the “Roses of your Path” (the things that make you want to stop and appreciate them: the satisfaction of calling your first Storm, the chill of the night air when you set out your first Full Moon Water, the spark when you find that one crystal.) Enjoy it. Enjoy your path, Enjoy your Craft.

*Use the Things you Already Own!*

Another thing i see beginners getting hung up on (myself included, i was/am extremely guilty of this lol) is wanting to go out and buy a ton of supplies. try looking around your house for things that can be re purposed. Old Spaghetti Sauce Jars can be cleaned and used as spell jars, deity altars/shrines, or ingredient storage! Take pictures from old magazines and make a collage Altar on paper! Use a composition notebook as your Book Of Shadows! Your old broken glasses case can be used as a case for your portable altar! Dig around and see if there are extra candles you haven’t used in a while! Wash out and save those eggshells from your cooking to use as spell ingredients! It takes some creative thinking but you can reclaim pretty much anything for your craft!

*Look for Bargains!*
For one thing prices can be outrageous for actual craft materials: like Crystals and Gems? Truly truly truly outrageous. So keep your eyes peeled for bargains and deals! Some of the best places to look for things on the cheap would be Dollar Stores, Flea Markets, Thrift Shops, Garage/Estate Sales! Most of the time in those places you can try haggling to get things at a cheaper price (or get more for less.) It really just depends on the place but you can find the most interesting assortments of things! Keep your eyes peeled in your general day to day life as well see if there are sales at your local grocery store for seed packets, seasonal items/holiday items (look for the sales afterwords to really save haha) The internet is a great place to look, i know Ebay has sellers who sell raw crystals/ crystal chunks by the pound. There’s also places to buy spices in bulk too

*Don’t Compare Your Path to Others!*
Your Path is Your Path, Their Path is Their Path.
Being online and part of the witchy community in tumblr means that there are a lot of ideas being shared from people’s paths and their views on how they think magic should be practiced. What works for them might not work for you and vice versa. Only YOU can decide what is best for you and your path. and on that note:

*Figure Out What YOU Want Out of Your Path!*
When you get some time, sit down and write out all the things you want to get from your path and think critically about how you want magic to work in your daily life. Do you want it to be Super Formal or more casual? perhaps a mix of the two?  Test the waters! Try things once and if you don’t like it then you know and can move on to the things that work better for your lifestyle/craft/path!
Some examples from my list that i can think of right now would be:
-Better knowledge of Crystals/ Crystal remedies and their healing properties
-Daily research -aka tumblr-
-Appreciating Nature more (Whenever i go on walks with my dog i try to pick up some litter if/when i see it)
-Daily Deity appreciation  -aka deity aesthetic reblogs to @theemeraldgod & Pintrest-

unconventional things you can do to feel good:
  • listen to any of these songs through a pair of earbuds, turn the volume up, and get down bb. shake ya booty. throw your hands up. get your groove on in the mirror and give no fucks for 3 whole minutes [x] [x] [x] [x]
  • wear a matching set of lingerie or fun, festive boxers (you know the superhero boxers with the capes attatched? those ones)

  • shave. your legs, your face, your armpits, shave it all off

  • curl your lashes. you don’t even have to put on mascara. sometimes it’s the little things you learn to appreciate about yourselves

  • pay for the customer behind you. it’s just something nice you can do while getting coffee. the customer behind you will appreciate it a lot and making others happy tends to make you feel happy too

  • make your bed- but not in the cleaning way. got a super nice matching pillowcase/sheet set? go put that shit on and make your bed feel comfy as possible. throw on all your stuffed animals and lay in one big cuddle puddle. bonus points for taking all the pillows in the house

  • power poses dude. do them! stand with your hands on your hips and chin up high! or if you’re sitting down, spread your legs out wide. make yourself look big. this one usually helps me feel more confident

  • invite friends over for dinner. make the dinner together. even if you fuck up and it turns out burnt to a crisp and totally inedible, it’s gonna be super fun to make! (you can buy a cheap frozen pizza as a backup ahead of time)

  • change your hair up. cut it. dye it. curl it. crimp it. gel it. shave it if you’re daring enough! temporary dyes are always fun to play with if your hair is light enough. if not, find all the hair clips and pins in the house and stick them on ya! bonus points for going out to the McDonald’s drive thru with friends looking like that. It’ll be a fun time for you and your cashier

  • send your followers nice anons and then look back to see how happy they were to get it! this one is always super nice for everyone

  • for those of you with longer nails: sharpen them. file them so that they look like cat claws and start ripping paper or drag them along your skin. it feels super weird but in a nice, ticklish way

  • teach yourself how to wink. smooch the mirror after putting on a bright shade of lipstick. twerk it. just have fun and be silly

  • get an eyeshadow palette (something cheaper) and make your brows look THICC. I mean HUGE and DARK. wiggle them in the mirror and take some funny selfies or snaps. send them to your crush and see what they say

  • go to a thrift store with $10 and see what neat thing you can find! you can treat yourself with a brand new curling iron, clothes, a new blender, or even a fucking COUCH for just $10 if you go to your local goodwill. just go off and venture! you never know what cool items you’ll find and you won’t feel bad about getting it when it costs little to nothing

  • go to a plant nursery and pick up a few nice house plants. I bought 3 nice house plants for just 9 bucks when I was sad one day and now I have a bunch of fresh herbs that make my room smell awesome

lance headcanons bc i love one (1) boy

are y’all prepared ..,.,,i got a lot going on here i’ve been working on this post for a while StRAP IN MY FRIENDS

  • okay first of all lance has incredible fashion sense, we just don’t get to see it bc !!! at the garrison he had to wear a uniform and he left all his other clothes behind back on earth but his closet is literally full of such cool clothes like he’s the type of guy who can take old thrift store things but arrange them uniquely in an outfit that looks really fUCKIng good and has everyone going O: !…,,he always looks good..,,and the boy does it on a budget bc he is practical!!
  • he has had a LOT of jobs bc he wanted it to look good on his application/money obvs ..,,,some of these include: a grocery store clerk, a waiter, and he even!! worked at a spa once bc…,he knows so many things about self care and has a passion for it!!
  • his first job tho was, you guessed it: the farm. u know, where he learned to milk a cow…,he was finally old enough to get a job and got all excited like heck yeah i’m ADULT and then his mom was like here our family friend (or maybe a relative or something) needs help on his farm this summer u can do that and he’s like wh…..okay
  • like at first he’s wary bc ew farm work?? dirt and sweat and rlly hot all the time?? but also he’s just..he likes to be optimistic abt things too when he can and is like ok u know what i’m gonna take this job and make it into something good and do a great job!! so.,,,at first he’s like what fuck when he learns how to milk a cow but eventually he gets the hang of it and as weird a feeling as it is he rlly likes the cows and all the animals and is v gentle with them ..,,he also cleans the chicken coop often which is gross but he likes the chickens ..,.he names every single one and sings to them sometimes while he’s working or talks to them
  • also he names every chicken after one of his siblings or family members so when he tells story about them at dinner he’ll be like “so yeah (insert sibling name here) finally laid an egg today” “lance are you kid—oh. the chicken” lance, bursting out in laughter:
  • on That note lance just loves all animals …,,he’s the kinda kid that brings home a stray cat/dog every other day and is like “mom can we keep him” . hell he does that with little lizards he finds on the sidewalk sometimes ..,, “mom can we keep him” “honey put the lizard back he actually lives out here”
  • swerving in another direction y’all ever wonder WHERE lance learned his sharpshooting skills?? like a majority he developed like right away when the war started and he has to quickly adapt but ?? he has to have had SOME previous experience bc the bayards kind of take the form that best suits their paladin, right??? i don’t even have a headcanon for that i just want to know maybe it’s bc he played a lot of shooting games at the arcade and got all the high scores
  • which reminds me like y’all…,,lance is just a teenage boy. he likes video games and pizza and going to parties and hanging out At The Beach With His Pals And stereotypical teenage things. he’s a kid please let him be a kid ..,
  • he likes to paint his nails!! it’s a very soothing task for him and he likes different colors. his favorites are black and blue (but also some purple and red for gay reasons)
  • he struggles a lot with his bisexuality (this is coming from a bi mlm for the record) for a LONG time. not really grasping the idea that he can like both girls AND boys and that it has to be one or the other, that he has to make some kind of choice to be gay or straight. so at some point he identifies as gay and then gets terrified of that and is like no i’m straight and finally..,,starts to come to terms with things and accept himself when he really learns what bisexuality is (hunk tells him probably) and there’s a light bulb over his head that goes DING DING DING BITCH THATS U!!!
  • he loves to watch his friends do things they’re passionate about bc it makes him happy. he loves watching keith draw, the cute concentrated somewhat frustrated look he gets on his face when he sketches. he likes watching pidge work on tech, like the kind she gets excited about, cool robot things and things she loves. hunk is always so happy when he’s cooking or tinkering with machines or talking about chemistry and lance will just sit and listen with a dopey grin. he and allura actually have a shared love of beauty stuff and self care so they get to do that together a lot !!! and shiro doesn’t really…,talk much about his interests or share them and lance is a little nervous to spend alone time with him bc he’s so intimidated (this is his hero!!) but those moments when they do happen to be alone lance is always v soft with him bc at the end of the day he knows shiro is not perfect and that he struggles an immense amount and deserves that softness
  • and coran, he just likes to listen to coran’s stories about all of his adventures, lets him go on about his life in altea for as long as he wants bc he knows it’s so important to coran. sometimes allura will join in and add a few things on to some of the stories or some info when they’re talking about altean culture and lance will listen intently and be so genuinely interested and if reallg means so much to coran and allura
  • lance in general although he puts on a cocky facade loves to listen to people and be there for them, is an incredible sense of support and encouragement and more than anything wants to see his loved ones happy and succeeding
  • going in a completely different direction here now but one time he arranges a paladin sleepover and insists they ALL wear their specialized paladin pajamas and!!! everyone wears theirs except keith bc keith is lame. (he does at least concede to wearing the slippers bc they’re….comfy okay…) and hunk and allura and keith and lance and pidge all!! stay up late and talk and stuff..,,lance teaches allura all the common sleepover games like truth or dare and she gets to really be a teenager again and they all get to just spend the night eating snacks and being kids and playing monopoly and i’m crying and !! it’s all orchestrated by lance bc lance more than anyone knows what they will need for a morale boost
  • He just wANTS OEOPLE TO BE HAPPY
  • outwardly he talks a lot about like glory of winning the war and being a hero and parades!!! but rlly his favorite thing is meeting all the people he’s saved not bc he’s some celebrity to them but bc it’s amazing to see that they’re free and as safe as they can be, that the work he’s doing, the struggles he’s going through and his time so far away from his family really is worth it if he can help so many people
  • i’m doing this so out of order but he can also ride a horse
  • that’s all for now but expect another one soon thx for coming to my ted talk

Witchling tips
  • Read all the books and other info you can, but learn to read critically.
  • Don’t be afraid to read things you might not agree with or identify with. Study is study and just because you read it doesn’t mean you have to believe it or incorporate it into your practice.
  • That being said, don’t appropriate cultures or cultural practices that do not belong to your or that you have not be trained and/or initiated in. There are ways to study cultures that are not appropriative, pay attention and be respectful.
  • Let your personal curiosity lead your study. What are you interested in about witchcraft? History? Divination? Plants? tarot? sigils? candle magic? charms or talismans? knot magic? Energy work? Study what you are interested in and see where it goes. There is a learning theory called “unschooling” that believes humans are naturally curious and that we should follow that curiosity to create our study. So, seek what interests you about witchcraft and find information about that.
  • You don’t have to buy all the fancy witchy stuff, especially if you don’t know if you are even going to use it. Stuff you already have is fine.  Things from thrift store are cheap, and work just as well. You might not ever use that cheap athame from the witch shop, but you might fall in love with a thrift shop mason jar.
  • You don’t have to spend a lot of money to practice witchcraft. Walk around your neighborhood and get to know the plants and animals, even urban spaces have unique magical things. Check out the spices in your spice rack and look up their correspondences. There are lots of books on witchcraft online for free as well as phone apps that could suit your needs.
  • Check out your local library. If they don’t specifically have books on witchcraft they will still have books on plants, history, and folklore. you might also be able to check things out with inter-library loans.
  • You don’t have to publicly document your path. I’m really happy there isn’t a public documentation of my witchling years or my baby punk years. Seriously, so much stumbling embarrassment. However, it is always helpful to document your progress for yourself; a hidden blog, a notebook, or google doc are just fine to start.
  • There is no universal witch. If you don’t want to work witchcraft in a religion, don’t. maybe secular witchcraft is for you. If you don’t want to work with deities, don’t. If forests give you the creeps and you love cities more, great, maybe urban witchery is for you. Make your witchcraft, your witchcraft.
  • There is little good in arguing with people that disagree with you, especially on the internet. If someone is not being hurtful and they just happen to believe differently than you, leave them alone. A witch that believes differently than you does not diminish what you do.
  • Remember that witchcraft is a collected set of skills and practices. These are things that you hone as you find what works for you. It is not something that will be given to you or that you will have instantly. It is something to be worked at that you can always learn more.
  • Basically, if you study and practice witchcraft, whatever that means to you, you can call yourself a witch. Also, if you do those things and don’t want to call yourself a witch, you don’t have to.

please imagine the students that make deals for useful but completely irrelevant stuff, like idk some glittery nail polish for never stubbing your toe again, one backscratch for another (the student got unlucky and received theirs from something with very sharp claws) etc

My favorite kind of deal is the almost totally pointless kind honestly. No heartbreak, no fortunes made or crushed, just, like … your tea will always be the right temperature no matter how long you forget it, and in exchange you’ll always oversleep your alarm by five minutes. Or you give up your ability to whistle in exchange for always being able to find the coolest things in a thrift store clothing rack. It’s half just to say you’ve Done The Thing and half practice deal-making just in case.
