Hello Mr gaiman. How old were you when you started writing stories ? I'm 14 and I try and try but they are all awful. I always give up in the middle and I can never finish what I wanted to write.

I know. I found a pile of papers of mine from my teen years and into my early twenties recently, and there were so many stories begun, so many first pages of novels never written. I’d start them, and then I’d give up because they weren’t as brilliant as Ursula K Le Guin, or Roger Zelazny, or Samuel R Delany, and anyway I wasn’t actually sure what happened next.

I was around 22 when I started finishing things. They weren’t actually very good, and they all sounded like other people, but the finishing was the important bit. I kept going. A dozen stories and a book, and then I sold one (it wasn’t very good, and I had to cut it from 8,000 words to 4,000 to sell it, but I sold it). I probably wrote another half-dozen stories over the next year, and sold three. But now they were starting to sound like me. 

Think of it this way: if you wanted to become a juggler, or a painter, you wouldn’t start jugggling, drop something and give up because you couldn’t juggle broken bottles like Penn Jillette, or start a few paintings then give up because the thing in your head was better than what your hands were getting onto the paper. You carry on. You learn. You drop things. You learn about form and shape and shade and colour and how to draw hands without the fingers looking like noodles. You finish things, learn from what you got right and what you got wrong, and then you do the next thing.

And one day you realise you got good. It takes as long as it takes. So keep writing. And all you need to do right now is try to finish things.

With a heavy sigh, you lean back in your seat, a blush creeping up your cheeks at the realization you probably crossed a line or something with those messages you sent to him on Saturday night. You’d prayed throughout the whole day after you’d get a reply, and when that didn’t happen you’d checked your phone every twenty minutes on Monday and today every time your phone buzzed. It’s kinda lame.

Really, you have no actual reason to be this upset about it.

“Joonie asked me about you today in class”, Jeongyeon says when your professor seems to still be too busy shuffling through his papers to give a damn about what’s going on in his class.

The First Galaxies: What We Know And What We Still Need To Learn

“As we look farther back in time, we find that younger galaxies formed stars at faster rates than galaxies do today. We can measure the star-formation rate, and find that at earlier and earlier times, it was more intense. But then we find it hits a peak when the Universe is about two billion years old. Go younger than that, and the rate goes down again.”

We’ve come incredibly far in our quest to learn how the Universe came to be the way it is today. We can see out in space for tens of billions of light years, to galaxies as they were when the Universe was only a few percent of its present age. We can see how galaxies evolve, merge and the stars inside change. And we can see to even before that, when no stars or galaxies existed at all. But how did we get from there to here? There are still plenty of gaps in the story. We’ve never seen the first stars or galaxies; we’ve never witnessed the start of cosmic reionization; we’ve never seen the star formation rate jump from zero to a real, finite number. Yet with James Webb and WFIRST on the horizon, these gaps in our knowledge may – if we’re lucky – all disappear.

The Wonder Woman that you see in “Batman v Superman” is a woman who has been around, and she’s very experienced. She understands a lot about man. Whereas in the standalone movie we are telling the grown-up story. Diana becoming Wonder Woman, and this was a story that was never told before. When she starts this journey, she’s very pure. She’s more naive, she’s this young idealist who does not really understand the complexities of life and the complexities of men.

one of the things I loved the most about Steve and Diana’s love story was that even though it was unconventional in its arc and ending (in that it didn’t follow the usual pattern or meet the usual goals of a fictional love story), it never sneered at those conventions. due to their circumstances- she’s a goddess, he’s a mortal, they’re in the middle of a war- and the fact that they are called to heroism and sacrifice, their story can’t end conventionally or domestically. but the beautiful thing about it is that the movie does not use its own heroic status to look down at love stories that do end traditionally and simply.

steve quips at the beginning about how no, married couples usually don’t love and cherish each other ‘til death do they part. he’s cynical about a lot and that includes love and marriage. diana was brought up on an all-female island. her goals and ambitions, her purpose in life are different from most women around her. from the start it’s clear that their love story was never going to end quietly and conventionally, not least because the story in which both of them live does not explicitly deal with the themes of love and marriage. diana begins her journey ready to fulfill her sacred mission and duty, and through meeting her and learning from her, steve also rises to great heights. both perform heroic feats and acts of self-sacrifice. they are heroes and heroes are not ordinary people. 

but the reason that wonder woman succeeds so spectacularly and rises above many of its counterparts (to me at least) is that it acknowledges that heroes should only exist to protect the lives of ordinary people. it believes that it is the sacred duty of heroes to fight evil on the grandest scale precisely so that everyone else can continue to live quietly, peacefully, domestically. convention, tradition, even routine are not dismissed or belittled. they are raised up. they are cherished and fought for as the very things that make life worth living. wonder woman is about war, but it is not about war with no cause. it is about the only thing that ever makes a war justified. 

and when steve and diana are dancing in the snow and diana asks “is this what people do when there are no wars?” she’s asking it because she never forgets that she’s fighting for more (so much more) than her own glory or even just to defeat evil. she’s fighting for the preservation of peace, of ordinary people’s right to dance together in the snow without danger, to eat breakfast, go to work, raise children, live their ordinary lives without fear. and when steve hands her his watch at the end and says “i wish we had more time” he’s saying he wishes that they had time to build a whole life together, a whole life of beautiful peaceful ordinariness. steve and diana’s love story is tragic because it’s cut short before the rest of it can unfold, but it’s beautiful because, in sacrificing a future that neither can have but both want, they are making possible the flourishing of a hundred other love stories, of a thousand other peaceful, ordinary lives. and both believe that that is worth every sacrifice.

The Girl with an Iron Spear and a Pouch of Salt

Most people don’t go looking for trouble. I certainly wasn’t when a letter showed up on my doorstep on a Sunday morning. I wasn’t looking for trouble when I arrived at a strange campus in the middle of the woods. Trouble found me, like most of the other new students who walked out of the woods.

Most of them.

We learned the dangers of this new trouble fairly quick. We tried to stick together, determined to get by.

We lost three people the first month.

I was sitting in the cafeteria I think when my attention drifted from my troubles to the group of students gathered in the corner of the room, speaking in whispers and many languages at once. The students of the Forbidden major. They lost three as well, the ones who thought they were careful. The ones who thought wrong.

They had one new student left.

She was a girl with jet black hair pulled into a messy bun and icy blue eyes. I remember her on the first day, a small girl with two duffels too big for a girl like her.

Months flew by and she still held my attention. A girl who always carried a long object wrapped in black cloth. A girl who carried a heavy pouch and iron bracelets. I passed her many times on campus, too scared to make eye contact.

The rumors started after around the holiday season, after an Incident. A boy with one eye told me she was the one who ended it, and a girl with red hair and tired eyes say the girl caused it. Both disappear soon after.

It’s the week before spring break that I start getting warnings to stop things I’ve never started. A day later, I find myself alone at night, coming back from the library. I don’t see them coming.

I’m making my peace when the strangest thing happens. I can see again, and what I see is still engraved into my mind. The girl is there. She’s swinging something. An ornate spear made of iron. She reaches into her pouch and pulls out a light pink stone. It crumbles in her hands and she flings it toward my attackers, who hiss and melt into the shadows. Salt stone. She has a pouch full of salt stones.

I looks at me with cold blue eyes and I ask her name.

“Wo jiao Qiu Yu.”

On Fury Road and the value of non-threatening male heroes

So I’ve been re-watching Fury Road and something struck me;

Tom Hardy’s Max is just really non-threatening. Now, that’s weird on a surface level because in story he’s presented as very dangerous. But here’s the thing about the kind of men we’re used to seeing in action movie; They are threatening in their masculinity.

The capitol A Action hero is a fixture in our cultural awareness. Almost without fail this hero is a man (if you have a woman in the role of action hero, it’s almost always proceeded by her gender. She can’t just be the action hero, she is very clearly cast as a FEMALE action hero.) So our male Action hero  is a badass. He’s dangerous, he’s brooding, he’s tough as nails. Sometimes he’s sarcastic and witty, sometimes he’s a moody stud. Point is, despite cultural changes that we see with our Action heroes as different pop culture trends change the flavoring, these men are all pretty much cut from the same mold. And here’s the thing about your typical Action hero; They have this underlying current of threatening masculinity. To put it bluntly, your typical Action hero is really all about cock. They’re intimidating to both their male peers and the women who are cast opposite them. They are toxic masculinity distilled onto our screens.

Now, in recent years we’ve been seeing more varity in our Action heroes. More emotion. Of course, there have always been exceptions (Luke Skywalker is one of the most note worthy male heroes to break this mold, and I think it’s worth noting that he’s often called whiny. Hell, when I was a little kid I loved him, but as a young teenager I thought he was lame. Now I realize that this might well have been because he wasn’t acting like your typical male hero. Maybe that scared me on some level) Anyway, let’s get back to Hardy’s Max. In story he  starts out as frightening, but he is never threatening in the way of your usual Action hero. He’s feral, dangerous, and unpredictable at the start of our story, but he doesn’t have any of that toxic masculinity.  So, we have a mad Max who is dangerous, and seems mad, as it were.  But there’s none of that hyper male Action hero posturing.

Hardy’s Max is a flawed man whose past has almost driven him past the point of no return. To the other characters in the movies he initially seems to be  feral (they don’t have the benefit of hearing his inner thoughts) Max is a frightening, but he’s not a masculine he-man. In fact, the characters in the movie who fall close to what we’re used to seeing in Action heroes are the warboys and their leader. The culture espoused by Immortan Joe is hyper masculine and toxic. The young men who idolize him seem like extreme versions of what we’re used to with our heroes. They’re brainwashed into a society built on toxic masculinity and objectification, and the heroes of the story are the ones fighting against this idea. Interestingly, Furiosa has a lot of traits of your traditional Action hero, but it’s coupled with compassion and self reflection, not because she’s a woman, but because  she’s  a person. Like Max, she is fighting to regain her humanity through helping a group of young women fight for their freedom from a world of toxic masculinity.

So, again back to Max himself. As the movie goes on he regains his sense of self. A big theme int he movie is the objectification and commodification of human life. We see this with Immortan Joe’s ‘wives” as well as with the brainwashed warboys and the use living humans as ‘bloodbags’ and ‘milkers’ Max starts the movie literally strapped to the hood of a car as a hood ornament/living blood bag.  Max is reluctant to help Furiosa and the ‘wives’ at first, but we see him change in a brief period of time. He  regains his humanity through helping others and coming to terms with his own demons. Hardy’s Max is dangerous, but he’s also vulnerable, undeniably so. We see his fear, we see what haunts him, and we see him struggle to survive, and then struggle to come to terms with his past in order to help others have a future. This sets him apart from Mel Gibson’s Max, and in my opinion makes him the better of the two. By the time Max starts really showing his human side, we see a man who is compassionate and half broken, a man who relearns himself by helping others.

Another notable aspect of Max is his relationship with Furiosa. Usually when your typical Action hero is paired with a STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN in a movie, there’s this ongoing dynamic of ‘but you’re a girlllllll’ There isn’t respect, because the heroes of the story are acting out the deeply felt internalized misogyny of our own society. They can’t interact as equals because in our cultural minds they are inherently unequal. They are defined by their rigid gender rules, and they act this out like they’re children on a playground crying about cooties. And of course, there’s usually the sexual element, with the heroes constantly griping at/disrespecting one another while it’s played off as repressed attraction all along.Fury Road never once does this. Max and Furiosa are two flawed and broken people trying to survive. There isn’t a split second where Max stops to wonder how a GIRL can be so tough. Once they’re established as allies, they immediately move into a working relationship built on mutual respect and trust. Two scenes come to mind. Firstly, the initial canon chase when Max first shows himself as an ally. There’s one notable moment where Furiosa is standing up out of the roof and Max hands her a gun. That doesn’t seem important, but there’s something about that gesture that’s very c cinematically important. It shows us that they’re a team now, and it shows us that they trust each other. The second notable scene is the “Don’t breathe” moment in the night bog. Max has previously seen that Furiosa is a good shot. He knows that she is the one to trust with this task, so he hands her the gun and lets her use him as a rifle stand. It’s a moment with no dialogue that speaks volumes.

All of this goes to Max as a nonthreatening hero. He never objectifies, disrespects, or distrusts his counterpart. He’s never an alpha male. He’s part of a story that he doesn’t need to dominate with his manly male maleness. Hardy’s Max is a dangerous, vulnerable, and quietly compassionate man who gives respect and trust where it’s due. He has no need to parade and prove his masculinity. In fact, the people doing that are the villains, and isn’t that telling?

  • “ That woman in charge is quite formidable. ”
  • “ You can just say ‘bitch.’ I hear it enough. ”
  • “ You’ve died at least a thousand times. ”
  • “  Maybe someday soon we’ll have the life we’ve both been dreaming of. ”
  • “ Has it never occurred to you to run off with her? ”
  • “ Everyone I cared about is gone and it hurts so badly. ”
  • “ The pain, their loss it’s all I have left of them. ”
  • “ I can feel spaces opening up inside of me, like a building with rooms I’ve never explored. ”
  • “ I may be losing my mind. ”
  • “ I think I want to be free. ”
  • “ You sound like a man who’s grown tired of wearing his guts on the inside. ”
  • “ I believe that only the truly brave can look at the world and understand that all of it gods, men, everything else will end badly. No one will be saved. ”
