the sorcerors stone

  • me watching sorceror's stone: um no in the book Ron doesn't thrash around like an idiot it's Hermione that's panicking and he actually reminds Hermione that she's a witch and there's a spell to solve the problem
  • me watching prisoner of Azkaban: um no in the book when Snape insults Hermione ron didn't insult her further he defended her and got himself detention
  • me watching prisoner of azkaban: um no in the book it's not hermione that defends harry from Sirius it's Ron and he does it while standing up on his mangled leg
  • me watching deathly hallows pt1: um no in the book when Hermione was being tortured Ron didn't just state the obvious and say they had to do something; he was banging on the walls and shouting his lungs off because the girl he LOVED was in trouble and he was worried out of his fricking mind
  • mom/dad/cousins/classmates/friends/dog while watching hp movies: EW what's up with ron he doesn't deserve Hermione
  • me: *sighs*

but really can you imagine minerva mcgonagall carefully going through the list of all the new firsties and efficiently whipping up their letters and getting to a one mr. harry james potter and hesitating, throat thick with emotion, as she remembers a tragically beautiful couple and the innocent baby whom they all tried so hard to protect and shedding a tiny tear and penning the words

dear mr. potter

and feeling content because at last, at long last lily and james’s child would truly be coming home

Slytherin and Prejudice in Harry Potter

No, this post is not about the obvious. The books depict a struggle between supporters of the evil, prejudiced Pureblood ideology, and its opponents, our heroes. The evil characters in the series mostly support Voldemort. But I think the books are also intended to show readers that even good people can be prejudiced. The books shows us that Harry and various of his supporters, are prejudiced against students and former students of Slytherin House.

Harry is first introduced to this prejudice by his guide into the Wizard World, Hagrid (who evidently shares it). He tells Harry about the Houses:

“Better Hufflepuff than Slytherin,” said Hagrid darkly. “There’s not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn’t in Slytherin. You-Know-Who was one.” (Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone, by J. K. Rowling)

Hagrid himself knows quite well that the above is false – he fully believes that Sirius Black, a Gryffindor, is a mass murderer, Death Eater, and the man who betrayed Harry’s parents. (As we all learn later, it was another Gryffindor, Peter Pettigrew).  Harry’s exposure to this opinion has its effect on Harry – by the time he witnesses the Sorting of the first of his classmates into Slytherin, he is reacting negatively to Slytherin students as a group they “look like an unpleasant lot” to him.

Harry’s dislike of the house is reinforced when Draco Malfoy, the snob who badmouths both Hagrid and Ron in front of Harry, is chosen for that House. And it is doubtless cemented further when he meets the intimidating Head of Slytherin, Professor Snape, who singles him out in Potions class. The whole book is a lesson about this in brief - I don’t think it is a coincidence that the man Harry settles on early (and incorrectly) as the villain, was Head of Slytherin.

Is it fair to call this a prejudice, considering the reasons Harry and his friends have to dislike Voldemort, Draco, and Snape? In my opinion, yes, because they allow their dislike of these individuals to color their view of the entire group.

When the Weasley twins hiss the Sorting of a Slytherin student in Book 4 about whom we know  nothing else, they are acting out of prejudice. Harry reacts negatively when he meets Slughorn and learns he was Head of Slytherin.  Harry jumps to the conclusion that the Slytherin Regulus Black forced his House Elf to drink Voldemort’s torture potion, he thinks so because of his prejudice. When Minerva McGonagall threatens Horace Slughorn, and later associates the entire House with the words of Pansy Parkinson, she is acting out of prejudice.

I feel Rowling intended that readers follow Harry’s journey in this. So we see Harry forming and strengthening a prejudice against Slytherin over the course of the series, and we may be inclined to share it it ourselves. Its plausibility is shattered for Harry by what he learns about Slytherins (including Draco, Regulus, Narcissa, Andromeda, and especially about Severus Snape, the Slytherin he has grown to hate the most) in the final books. This process was formalized in Harry’s naming of his younger son, and his comments to that son about Slytherin house. His final verdict on his former views seems, quite unambiguously, that Slytherin is a House like any other, and if his son is in that House, it will have acquired an excellent student.

So, I was talking to my dad (who I have started to call “Rickman” because of his obsession with imitating Snape) while watching Sorceror’s Stone, and I asked him who his favourite character was. He said Lupin, so I told him about how the fandom thought Remus was bi and hardcore shipped Wolfstar. And you know what he compared Remus’s bisexuality to? Being a werewolf.

He said that liking girls was like being human and liking boys was like being a wolf, something he would have to hide but couldn’t control. I have never been happier to have an English major as a father. Then he exited the room and left me to contemplate.

Then, he cave back in and says when Hermione makes the wolf call in PoA, it’s a the call of a male wolf. And I have never laughed harder.

SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING BECAUSE EVERYONE IS WRONG ABOUT RON WEASLEY

FIRST, BECAUSE WE MAY AS WELL ADDRESS IT, THE WAY RON’S CHARACTER WAS TREATED IN THE MOVIES – HERMIOINE BEING GIVEN ALL HIS BEST LINES WHILE A CARDBOARD CUTOUT COULD HAVE STOOD IN FOR RUPERT GRINT (DESPITE HIS BEING A GREAT ACTOR WHO REVERED RON) I AM LOOKING AT YOU KLOVES – THEN J.K. ROWLING HERSELF CALLING IT “WISH FULFILLMENT” WHICH WAS JUST SUCH A SPECTACULAR BETRAYAL, THEN EMMA WATSON BACKTRACKING A BIT, AND NOW RUPERT GRINT HIMSELF??? RUPERT, WHO ALWAYS SAID RON WAS HIS FAVORITE, HAS APPARENTLY DECIDED THAT RON WOULD HAVE DIVORCED HERMIONE AND BE LIVING??? ALONE??? IN AN APARTMENT??? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??? (NOT TO MENTION MATTHEW I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN YOU LEWIS FOR HIS COMMENTS AS WELL, I CANNOT)

RON IS NOT AT ALL WORTHLESS. RON IS NOT WHINY. RON WAS IMMATURE AND INCREDIBLY INSECURE AND INSENSITIVE AT TIMES. BUT RON IS THE BEST FRIEND. HE IS SOLID. HE IS RELIABLE. HE LEFT BUT HE CAME BACK – DUMBLEDORE HIMSELF KNEW THAT RON WOULD ALWAYS COME BACK, HE KNEW THAT ABOUT HIM, DAMMIT! HE SACRIFICED HIMSELF, TIME AND TIME AND TIME AGAIN – THE CHESS GAME IN SORCEROR’S STONE, STANDING UP TO SIRIUS BLACK (WHO THEY STILL!!! BELIEVED!!! TO BE!!! A MASS!!! MURDERER!!! AND RON IS THIRTEEN AND STANDING UP TO THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN THE WIZARDING WORLD FOR THE LOVE!!! OF!!! HIS!!! FRIENDS!!!) IN PRISONER OF AZKABAN, SOBBING, POUNDING THE WALLS, SCREAMING, BEGGING BELLATRIX (AND BTW HE IS FULLY AWARE OF WHAT SHE IS CAPABLE OF???) TO TAKE HIM, TORTURE HIM INSTEAD IN DEATHLY HALLOWS – FOR HIS FRIENDS AND FOR HIS FAMILY. HE HAS ALWAYS LOOKED OUT FOR THEM. HE HAS ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT THEM (SAYING THAT HE WOULD TEACH HERMIONE HIS WHOLE GODDAMN FAMILY TREE??? AND BTW THEY ARE WEASLEYS THAT IS NOT GONNA BE A SMALL AMOUNT OF STUDY??? SO THAT SHE WILL NOT BE SNATCHED BY SNATCHERS OR THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC WHO ARE OUT FOR MUGGLE BLOOD???). HE HAS ALWAYS WANTED THE BEST FOR THEM. HE HAS ALWAYS WANTED THEM TO BE SAFE AND TO BE HAPPY. HE HAS A GOOD HEAD ON HIS SHOULDERS. HE HAS A HEART OF GODDAMN GOLD. THERE IS NO WAY. THERE IS NO WAY, EVER, NOT EVER, THAT HE WOULD LEAVE HERMIONE (HE AND HERMIONE WORK, BY THE WAY, OF COURSE THEY WORK – THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS SO MUCH MORE THAN BICKERING AND ANYONE WHO WANTS TO REDUCE THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THAT CAN BITE ME, THEY ABSOLUTELY BALANCE EACH OTHER IN WAYS NO ONE ELSE COULD, HOW IS THIS SO HARD TO SEE???). THERE IS NO WAY, EVER, NOT EVER, THAT HE WOULD WIND UP LIVING ALONE IN SOME STUPID APARTMENT.

LISTEN. YOU CAN CARE LESS ABOUT RON. YOU CAN DISLIKE RON. BUT DO NOT DISMISS HIM. DO NOT DISRESPECT HIM. ALL HE HAS FOUGHT FOR AND ALL OF THE FEARS AND DOUBT HE HAS FOUGHT THROUGH AND OVERCOME AND HOW FAR HE HAS COME AND HOW FIERCELY HE HAS ALWAYS LOVED AND HOW HE WILL ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS COME BACK – RON IS GOOD AND KIND AND LOYAL AND LOVING AND BRAVE.

AND RONALD WEASLEY DESERVES BETTER.
