the sacrificial lamb

2

One of the things I love most about Mulan, that’s rarely commented on, is just how much of a sacrificial lamb she is for her family before stepping in for her father in the army. Unlike Belle and Jasmine, who are fed up with society and make no attempts to conform for the sake of anyone else, Mulan trained and went to the match maker with the honest attempt at being the best bride she could be. If the match maker chose her that day, she would have willingly sold herself into the role that being a wife entailed to appease her family, at the sake of her own happiness and comfort because that’s how much they meant to her. If she hadn’t been perpendicular to the status quo and actually fit in, she would’ve gone into the marriage set up by the matchmaker and led a life of selflessness in a role that she never would’ve chosen for herself nor enjoyed.

Please, let him be soft.

I know you made him
     with gunmetal bones
     and wolf’s teeth.
I know you made him to be
     a warrior
     a soldier
     a hero.

But even gunmetal can warp
and even wolf’s teeth can dull
and I do not want to see him break
the way old and worn and overused things do.

I do not want to see him go up in flames
the way all heroes end up martyrs.

I know that you will tell me
that the world needs him.
The world needs his heart
     and his faith
     and his courage
     and his strength
and his bones and his teeth and his blood and his voice and his–
The world needs anything he will give them.

Damn the world,
     and damn you too.
Damn anyone that ever asked anything of him,
damn anyone that ever took anything from him,
damn anyone that ever prayed to his name.
You know that he will give them everything
until there is nothing left of him
         but the imprint of dust
              where his feet once trod.
You know that he will bear the world like Atlas
    until his shoulders collapse
         and his knees buckle
and he is crushed by all he used to carry.

Dear God,
you have already made an Atlas.
You have already made an Achilles and an Icarus and a Hercules.
You have already made a sacrificial lamb of your Son.
You have already made so many heroes,
and you can make another again.
You can have your pick of heroes.

So please, I beg you–
he is all that I have,
and you have so many heroes
and the world has so many more.
Let him be soft,
and let him be mine.

—  Please, let him be happy ( j.p. )
Unlucky Nine: A list of antis you may or may not have encountered in the vld fandom

Start Note: When I mention [Ship Name] Anti, it means a shipper of that ship who is also anti of another ship mentioned depending on the context as opposed to Anti-[Ship Name] which is someone who is an anti of the ship mentioned.

I. “Ship K/ance or Sha//ura or my ship instead” anti

These antis are just assholes. They insult other ships that contend to their own. These antis are prevalent in Sheith, Kallura and sometimes Shidge tags.

You get K/ance antis calling Sheith yaoi culture but then they totally change Keith and Lance’s character to fit the same trope. I was so pissed the other day because someone took Lance and just shoved Uke™ on him to fit an AU where he crushes on Keith.

You got K/ance & Sha//ura antis calling Kallura heteronormative but we aren’t the ones who’re forcing a mom troupe on her despite her not being really motherly. (Hunk is the mom friend but let us forget the fat character for aesthetics) You get them saying they love Allura but her story line, which focuses on her duty and willingness to sacrifice anything for it, is shoved for some romance. (Allura, although possibly having some romantic take to it, did not save Shiro because she had a fucking crush on him. She saved him because he needed saving and she viewed his role to Voltron as more important than hers.Stop acting like it is a canon romantic scene. No real scene in Voltron is really inherently romantic.)

You got K/ance shouting if Kallura happens, there won’t be any representation (m/m) but we still got Shiro, Lance and Hunk. Yes, we still got Shunk, Shance and Hance. if we go poly, there is Shunce. And if we dig deeper and you are willing, add Coran into the mix(I’m shoran trash undeniably).

You got them saying Shidge is wrong but the most official thing we got is actually the OFFICIAL Voltron site (whose content probably was made known to the entire crew and was advertised to the general public) saying ‘5 teens.’ But let us dwell on a half-baked video where a person throws numbers into some of the crew’s mouths. Let us not dwell on how Allura has no one bit of an age meter. For all we know, she could be a centuries old Alien. But sure why not, dwell on Shidge.

They put their ships on high pedestals to trample on other ships but you are probably a hateful bitch when you call them out on their shit.

II. “Shiro is spacedad” anti (bonus points for Allura as space mom)

These antis believe Shiro is a grandpa. They seem him as a father figure which would have been okay because let us admit that at some point the space dad joke were funny UNTIL PEOPLE TOOK THEM SERIOUSLY. Unlike the typical fan who laugh at the jab, these people take things to far and actually think it is canon. Shiro is actually a dad. “How dare you hc Shiro as a young and vulnerable character instead of my perfect space dad™?” All that crap.

But if you remember Prisoner Shiro, Kerberos Shiro, he looks pretty young. If you change back his hair before the frosty tips, remove the scar and the buff bara bod (he probably got from fighting in the ring), you wouldn’t find him looking wise beyond his years.

Coupled with Canon™ Space Mom Allura, it just pisses me off. Allura is enigmatic, a bit impulsive but her impulses are mostly practical, not afraid to jump into action, a bit bossy and domineering at times, yes, but deep down inside Allura is just a princess who wants her life back, who wants to live in peace with pretty things like her Altean flowers, who wants to go shopping for sparkly things, and maybe experiment with cute hairstyles.

This is why it kinda pisses me off. The idea was cute. Heck, I made an entire Sha//ura au once with my friend with the whole vld family thing but when they just pushed for it on discourse and acted like it was some holy canon grail, I was just really seven levels of salt.

III. “Pidge is like 4 months old” anti

These antis just infatalize Pidge. “Pidge is a kid. She can’t make romance decision. Pidge is practically a baby. How dare u” and all that shit. But it is totally fine for someone you see as a ‘kid’ to be flying an alien warship and engaging in an intergalactic war? Same goes for those who infantalize other Paladins. The logic is flawed enough but something else really pissed me off in this one.

My main concern with this is that the blatant forcefulness that Pidge is young because she has all the stereotypical looks of younger people. It undermines short girls who never grow up to be tall and developed upfront. Some people never get hit with puberty right. I was thirteen and 5′1 and now I’m  nineteen and guess what? 5′1.5. Where is the justice puberty? You didn’t hit me up. You just poked me with a stick once and left.

And just the other day, guess what? I was again assumed to be like fourteen, especially since I was standing right next to my tree of a younger brother who is like sixteen. I probably would be rich right now if i had a dollar for every single person who thought I was fourteen. Pidge may look young by stereotypical standards, sure. But that doesn’t mean she is. She could just be a short 19 year old.

The concept of child-coded is bullshit. I mean look, I look, by stereotypical anti standard, like a fourteen year old therefore when tall people my age or older (who coincidentally also fit the stereotypical adult look standard) theoretically like me, we are perpetuating pedophilia. If we start dating, since they are adult-coded and I’m child-coded, it’s almost as if it is already pedophilia.

If anything, the infantalization of Pidge showed me that people, yes I repeat, people will continue to be misogynistic to women who do not fit the stereotype of what a woman should be. I mean, when did height and cupsize amount to a woman’s age and maturity as a person? It just says you have to fit this shitty standard to be something and to be recognized and that is fucking bullshit.

Oh well, to the antis, I guess I’ll be a minor forever. And to end this segment with another one of your fave defenses, “I”M MINOR-CODED AND CHILD-CODED SO YOU CAN’T ATTACK ME UWU”

IV. “Shiro’s trauma is an issue” anti

This is by far the one of the things I’ve seen. These people say that because Shiro experienced some traumatizing shit, he is not eligible for a relationship with any of the Paladins. It basically says that because Shiro has ptsd, he can’t date anyone who is potentially(meaning they see this character as young or immature and they aren’t actually as such) less mature™ or younger than he is. It basically says that since Shiro has ptsd, he must be toxic by default. It thrives upon the logic that anyone with mental health issues is gonna be toxic in relationships. (except Sha//ura cuz apparently Shiro who they call toxic in all other relationships isn’t toxic there)

V. “go fucking kill yourself” anti

No explanations needed. Assholes with no regard for human life. Suicide baiting, Gas lighting, you name it. Best thing to do is just block these. No arguing with them.

VI. “I’m a minor/survivor/minority group so I am allowed to be an asshole to anyone” anti

These are the people who go and attack others but when you call them out on their shit, they go like “but we are a minor/survivor/part of a minority.”

I’m only gonna say this once so listen well. (Who am I kidding? I’ve stressed this so much.) Being a minor/survivor/minority does not excuse you from being an asshole. You can experience terrible things and be like fourteen but you can still be an asshole. It does not give you a free pass to ruin other people’s lives. Get that inside your head. Someone can be depressed and still be an asshole. Someone can be autistic and still be an asshole. Someone can be gay and still be an asshole. Someone can be part of a general minority group and still be an asshole. Their status as a minor/minority/survivor DOES NOT make them an asshole but this specific person, who coincidentally fits in a certain group, is just an asshole. Their status is merely circumstantial and not the root of their being an asshole therefor it must not be used as an excuse for them to be one.

VII. “Shaladin is okay except for Shidge ft. Ship Sh/att instead” anti

I’m like WHY? These antis act like they are allies and they are good™ but they throw Shidge under the bus and vilify it to somehow make other shaladin ships appeal to the anti standards. You draw the line in Shidge? Well, I draw the line in vilifying ships to put yours on a pedestal. I would’ve understood if it was just basic ‘I don’t like Shidge’ but no, it has to rhyme with the anti logic of infantalizing her and all those things.

And don’t let me get started on Sh/att. Cuz it just shattered all the hope of me getting into this ship. This was good, old friends trope, I couldn’t save you trope. You name it. It has all the layers of angst that normally i would dive into. But the shippers use the same rhetoric shaladin antis use on Shidge. “It’s shidge but gay” Do you know how misogynistic you sound? And how dare you think I ship my ship because ‘aesthetics uwu’.

The idea of throwing Shidge out to appeal to the antis like some sacrificial lamb is just anti rhetoric itself. “It’s okay if one ships takes the fall for us.” It’s just pointing fingers at someone, in this case some ship. And honestly, that sucks.

VIII. “I’m gonna misuse social justice to call you all these names and not appreciate social justice when it is working against me” anti

These antis are those who try to shit on ships by appealing to twisted social justice but the moment actual social justice works against them, they try to ignore it and you just know, it was never a social issue to begin with.

A perfect example of this are the “Bi Lance for K/ance” antis. They shout and tell the world,”we got Bi Lance, we got a bi character in our ship. Whoop Whoop representation” but moment someone goes “oh nice, I ship Lance with Allura/Pidge/Nyma/Plaxum/any girl in existence.” They jump at you and call you cis het scum or whatever. But Lance is Bi right? Don’t Bi people like umm girls too???? Yes??? Do you know what a bi is?????

You see, they actually don’t care about bi representational at all unless it is used to put their ships up. And don’t get me started on the hate for ‘Bi Keith.’ I know the idea of Gay Keith is a fan fave but Bi Keith is a possibility. Like Bi Lance is everything to the universe but you are suddenly Zarkon if you as much think about Bi Keith. You love bi representation so much don’t you?

Oh and the antis who go like “we are protecting survivors and minors” just as they attack survivors and minors. Good job on the protecting.

Everything these antis do is just plain crap. When you untangle their twisted social justice and see the ulterior motives, you see their actions for what they are, personal vendettas against shippers, attacks so that whatever shitty ship they have gets to trample on other ships.

IX. “fiction is reality” anti

These are just antis who thrive on the idea that fictitious content is actually reality and therefore every dark-themed content is evil.

Tell me why I’m not marking Priests with hot iron stamps fresh from flames and killing them? I read Angels and Demons. Tell me why I’m not suddenly killing humans and eating them? I watched Hannibal. Tell me how I haven’t butchered the person I like? I watched School Days + Higurashi and I was like thirteen, a minor yes, at the time. Tell me how I’m not suddenly taking people in strange boats and making them go through hell, I was eight, a fucking kid, I watched Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl). They are unanswerable because fiction is in fact not reality.

The idea that fiction is reality is just the same as how way back four or so years ago, there was a backlash in gaming like with fighting and guns because it supposedly perpetuates violence and supposedly hypnotizes people. And you know how stupid that idea is? That is how stupid the idea that ‘fiction’ is reality’ in fandom is.

And if you actually do think fiction is reality, I suggest you seek medical help.

End Note: Antis may appeal to other forms of attacks or a mix of these but you guys stay strong and safe.

Guess who got emotionally scarred again by playing the Platinum Demo after finishing FFXV?

Me. I did. I never played the Platinum Demo (nor Episode Duscae, bad move on my part). So when I saw that it was still available, I tried it out.

DON’T DO THIS GUYS.

Playing as cute baby Noct when you know how his fate turns out is going to HURT. A LOT.

Especially when you:

- learn that one of Noctis’s most treasured gifts from Regis was a soccer ball that he had always asked for. Then what he just wanted was for his father to play with him. But since Regis is a busy king, he can’t. So Noct would just wait by the Citadel steps every sunset waiting for Regis to come home, but no one shows up. So he just learned to ‘not care’ anymore. (tears)

- You’re led to believe that his ‘safe place’ is the Citadel, Insomnia. But after you fight an Iron Giant, baby Noct’s real ‘safe place’ appears: the REGALIA. It’s because when he’s riding the Regalia, he gets to be with Regis all the time. (then he gets to be with Prompto, Gladio, and Ignis later on) This makes the whole crash at Gralea and Noct saying goodbye to the car all the more painful. (It was already painful to begin with; but knowing this makes it especially tortuous).

Noctis has been dealt such a shitty hand. Best worst sacrificial lamb ever. He needs a real happy ending!

TABATA WHY DO YOU MAKE US CRY ALL THE TIME?!

What Ardyn did wrong... and why everything was wrong with Noctis’ fate

Ardyn is the most interesting character in FFXV, indeed. Mysterious man of no consequences. Despite his horrible actions, a lot of people being sympathetic to him, because Trash Jesus is very charismatic person with aura of tragic, misunderstood hero, who was punished by terrible Gods for nothing.

But people simply ignore a big elephant in the room.

Ardyn didn’t cure Starscourge.

He didn’t fullfill God’s task, he absorbed Starscourge within himself, but didn’t destroy the plague properly.

But why? Why didn’t he sacrifice himself like Noctis? Why did once selfless and kind man choose the path of Accursed?

🌙Encouragement for the Moon Signs Part 2: Libra-Pisces🌙

♎️Libra Moon : You are too kind. Too pleasing. Too balanced. The level scales struggle with the severity of feeling. You are going to have to decide what is right and what is fair, because it can’t always be both. You are graceful and far reaching, welcoming and flowing, but don’t give your hand to a wolf. Guard yourself.

♏️Scorpio Moon : You are so turbulent. Extreme. Severe. Hidden. Extract your feelings and put them on the table. But tenderly. The outside world can’t always handle your intensity so well, but there are ways to express yourself without compromising your essence. You’re so beautiful. A magic sorcerer. Don’t be a hermit always. Let yourself into the light.

♐️Sagittarius Moon : You are the enthusiast, the traveling being, Jupiter expands your emotions, and sometimes it’s hard to reach and grab ahold of them. Ideals and fire are beautiful things. But reach down and grab a handful of earth, a sip of water, and throw yourself off a cliff. You are warm and optimistic, feel yourself close and not always far.

♑️Capricorn Moon : My dear Capricorn, you are the toughest of them all. Too tough. Too guarded. Too strong. Too afraid. But so, so soft on the inside. And this is my lesson to you: let softness reveal its strength to you, and vulnerability be your tender hand to hold when the feelings you bottle inside become too much to handle on your own. Speak up intimately. Shout and scream to your loved ones. You deserve it. Don’t stay quiet and repressed.

♒️Aquarius Moon : Sister, sister. Some call you my opposite, and yet we are so close. You crave (good) attention but won’t admit it. You crave community and acceptance but are confused by the warmth that requires. You feel so different, so unique, so foreign, your emotions are hard to understand. But I know you and I feel you. You aren’t a foreigner, though you feel like one. Be what I shouldn’t: loud, dramatic. Open yourself up and ATTACH.

♓️Pisces Moon : I love you. You are the true empath. The true dreamer under the sea, the psychic healer, the unrelenting lover, always willing to be the sacrificial lamb so someone else doesn’t have to be. So the hurt is evaded. These are my words to you : help the hurting, heal the oppressed, but strike down the evil energy and do not let yourself be walked on, for you are the feet of emotion, the bottom of the sea rising to the surface to break the act and bring us all as one into your compassionate dream. A dream that is a lost reality. Stand your ground. You don’t have to be a black hole for darkness and evil. Absorb the good and heal yourself.

That moment when Hannibal realises Will was lying about killing Freddy. Breaks my heart.

It is honestly, I mean, with Hannibal, there aren’t a lot of moments where you look at Mads’ performance and think, that’s harrowing. Even when he’s beaten and bloody and unable to stand you still think bastard

With Will, when you see him so vulnerable and helpless in Season 1, a complete victim you feel for him so completely.

To feel that for Hannibal is so totally unexpected, and then that whole scene after (that I giffed earlier, so I spent a lot of time looking at Mads’ face) with the sacrificial lamb and he is visibly upset. I mean, the only time we’re used too feeling for a villain is when you’re fed their clumsy “oh woe is me, this is why I kill” story line, and this couldn’t be more different to that. It’s most genuine, and I find that beautiful.

pleasespellchimerical  asked:

Hey friends! I just wanted to say that your posts on spies have been so useful to me. Anyway, I have a character who is an ex-soldier (infantry). For various plot reasons, he needs to infiltrate a very secretive group and gain info on them. He has a mentor, who is an intel agent. Question is: what would a crash course on infiltration look like? They don't have much time, and my solider is a very straightforward person and has some problems with deception. What does he need to know?

Well, one thing he really should not know, under any circumstances, is that his handler is setting him up as a sacrificial lamb for the other guys to capture and interrogate. A “spy,” who is bad at deception, and very straightforward? He has “doomed spy,” written all over him.

The Doomed Spy is a concept from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. This is a spy you send in, explicitly, to be captured. They don’t know it, but their real job is to feed misinformation to the enemy, either through shoddy tradecraft or under direct interrogation. This could range from something as simple as a false flag operation, where the spy is told and believes they’re working for one nation or faction, when in fact, that entity has no knowledge of their actions, and their handler’s loyalties actually belong elsewhere. Or, it could be as complex as an entire operation, designed to provide the targets with false intelligence.

So, your ex-soldier, who’s bad at lying, and thinks he’s working for one group is, in fact, working for a completely different group that wants to provoke action against the people he’s (probably) loyal to. This may go a step further, where his handler recruits him, specifically because of his prior ties to the faction the handler claims to represent.

Something else that’s kind of important to understand about intelligence work, or at least direct human intelligence work. As a spy, your job isn’t to sneak into an office, or even talk your way in. Sometimes you need to be there personally, but most of the time, you can get someone else to do it for you. Why sneak into an office building, when you can pay a member of the cleaning staff to pass paperwork to the trash, where you can get someone to pick it up later?

At that point, there isn’t a lot of reason to train assets (the people a spy uses as intermediaries to get their information). In theory, they already know how to act in their native environment.

Getting someone into some kind of secret society is going to be a lot trickier, but at that point, your spy’s best cover may be going in as themselves. Okay, up front, this one’s a kind of weird situation, so let’s parse apart how this works.

Normally, a spy’s best option is to get other people to work for them. It creates a layer of insulation, so if something goes wrong, they can get out, and take any intelligence they’ve obtained, before the authorities manage to close in on them. This doesn’t always work, but, the separation between an actual spy and their assets is vital to effective tradecraft. It also means that the spy’s identity isn’t immediately known. There’s a huge jump between walking into a place, and having your face on security cameras, and getting some poor schmuck no one knows to do it for you. This also leads to a paradoxical situation with intelligence work. Spies tend to deal with their most immediately critical cases early in their careers, when no one knows who they are, and then spend the rest of their career working on much less important cases, when getting exposed would be less harmful.

What we have here sounds like a slightly different situation that doesn’t really pop up in the real world, where a spy’s anonymity wouldn’t work.

If we’re talking about some supervillain’s secret society, where they already have intelligence gathering on par with some nations, and have moles in your spy’s intelligence agency, then, as I said a minute ago, the answer may be to go in, “as themselves.”

With one exception, you wouldn’t likely see this in the real world, but a veteran spy, looking to infiltrate some kind of Illuminati/Majestic 12 style, “secret rulers of the world,” type conspiracy, may be better off poking them with a stick and asking for a job. They’d already know who the spy is, there’s no real point in pretending to be someone else. Their own skill set wouldn’t raise any questions when that’s who they’re supposed to be anyway. Once they’re in, they’d probably act as a sleeper (an agent who does not engage in any intelligence activities) to build up their cover, increase their access, and only act when they have the opportunity to fully achieve their goals, (which could take years).

Just to be clear, you could shove an entire series in here, about a spy who infiltrated some conspiracy, and is building their cover and working their way up through the ranks while wrestling with their ethics and what they’re having to do.

In that context, it’s possible they may pick an ex-soldier off the street to send in, in order to get the organization’s people knocking on their door.

In general, you’re not going to see this with national intelligence services, because no one trusts defectors. But, if you’re talking about an extra-national service, they don’t really have the option of producing their own talent (at least, not at first). They’d also be more likely to poach members of their host nations’ intelligence communities.

The one real world example where you might see a spy walking in the front door without a cover would be in dealing with businesses. Companies who are concerned about corporate espionage have a real incentive to hire former intelligence officers as security consultants and advisors. At the same time, this isn’t an extremely likely outcome for a couple reasons. First, private sector jobs like this are a very lucrative gig for ex-civil servants, meaning going after one would be biting the hand that (would have) fed them. Second, they’d still be in competition with other ex-intelligence officers for the position, people with the same kinds of training they received, which would make getting in tricky. Finally, when it comes to the business world, you rarely need a spy; it’s overkill. Most of the things a business gets into would be better suited for investigation by normal law enforcement channels.

Come up with a situation where a spy would need to tear into a company’s actions, and they’d benefit more from directing police action against it, rather than going in directly.

In all of this, I don’t think I’ve answered the direct question. The kind of videogame, sneaking in through the vents, infiltration approach doesn’t (usually) work. Infiltration, in the real world, is more about walking in and looking like you belong there, not hiding behind crates and climbing the drainpipes. (Somewhat obviously, this isn’t going to work out for your straightforward ex-soldier who has hang-ups about lying to people.) The biggest lessons are in social engineering. Learning how people function (psychologically), and exploiting inherent vulnerabilities in “normal” social structures.

Social Engineering often gets broken down into individual tricks, that play with expectations, for example: using a business card as false identification when making an introduction. This would never get you through a security checkpoint, but it might get you in the building to talk with someone, and give you access to information they normally wouldn’t.

As a gestalt, social engineering is fairly complex, but the basics are looking for ways to get people to give you information they really shouldn’t, by making them think you’re someone who is supposed to have access.

But, that’s what a spy’s job is, getting people to tell you things they shouldn’t, usually by misdirection and deception.

Two films that come to mind in this specific genre which may be worth watching are The Recruit, and Spy Game.

The Recruit (2003) focuses on a programmer (Colin Farrell) who is tapped by the CIA to become an agent, and the film spends a lot of time working through the training of prospective CIA Officers.

Spy Game (2001) focuses on a retiring CIA Officer (Robert Redford) discussing the training and career of his protégée (Brad Pitt). To a degree, this is probably the most on point to what you’re after, so if you’ve never seen it, it should be part of your lit review.

As always, Burn Notice’s, “when you’re a spy” routines may also be useful. The show spends a lot of time on social engineering (though it rarely uses the term). The discussions on how people normally behave, and how to work around, or exploit, their expectations are what you’re looking for.

You may also want to pick up and watch Ronin (1998). This is more about veteran spies interacting, but it has a very slick approach to tradecraft that may be useful.

I wonder if LJ Smith ever sits back and goes ‘what do you do to my babies?!’ after glancing at an episode of this show.

Let’s see, in the books Elena was a snot in the beginning but when she met Stefan he knocked her down a few pegs and she grew to appreciate her friends and family a lot more. (Caroline’s show story. Shocking.)

Bonnie was a central POV character. Wasn’t afraid of Damon and even though he made goo goo eyes at Elena, Bonnie was RIGHT THERE and he couldn’t get her out of his head.

Stefan is a self sacrificial lamb for quite some time until Damon and Elena cure him from that.

Matt is an important player, doesn’t complain all the time, is one of the few people in the beginning that shows Stefan kindness and friendship. (We were robbed of that on the show. Stefan and Matt’s friendship was so good and didn’t promote toxic masculinity. Smith wrote that so well.)

Meredith wasn’t fridged. Klaus was an actual villain instead of a woobified baby. Katherine and Elena are not doppelgangers but they do have a strong resemblance to each other. Katherine is an actual villain as well but you still see the little girl in her.

I better stop. We could be here all day.

queenmorganlafay  asked:

Hey, out of curiosity, is MCU Steve's origins closer to Ultimate Steve's origins? What's Ultimate Steve like, and is he different than he is in the 616 universe? And, is it true he dated Janet Van Dyne?

Oh boy. I have so many, many thoughts on this topic. Poor @queenmorganlafay, you’re probably going to be sorry you set me off. ;)

Short answer: Joss Whedon was writing Ultimates!Steve, Markus and McFeely are writing 616!Steve. And yes, Ultimates!Steve dated Jan at one point.

Now the long answer: Did you ever watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer? The slayer mythos went like this, every generation a slayer is born. The Watchers Council usually took that child as a baby, isolated her, and raised her to be 100% committed to her duty and purpose, with no space left over for friends, or family or love. They basically molded the perfect soldier and sacrificial lamb. Buffy escaped that fate, not being activated as a Slayer until she was already a teenager. She was raised by her parents, she formed friendships and emotional ties, and despite coming from a broken home, had a strong support network in her mother and her friends. Ultimates!Steve is how Captain America would be without his emotional ties, someone 100% committed to duty and honor and sacrifice. Someone with whom Steve Rogers got completely buried under Captain America.

For Steve HOW he woke up from the ice made all the difference in how his personality would evolve. I like to explain things this way: Steve Rogers is very much an introvert. He’s socially awkward, he once told Rachel that his idea of leisure-time was reading a book or working out, all solitary activities. Captain America is an extrovert. They are completely different skins that Steve wears. When he woke up in the 20th/’21st century (depending on which run you’re reading) Captain America had reached legend status. Steve woke up to a time when his alternate persona was absolutely revered. Which was immensely disconcerting for him, because what he found is that people had built Captain America up so much, had this ideal in their heads of what Captain America was and should be, that Steve Rogers was completely overshadowed. No one outside of his circle even knew who Steve Rogers was. And Steve struggled for decades trying to live up to the ideal of Captain America, the side effect being one big massive case of existential crises.

In the 616 universe Steve, like Buffy, has had a very strong support network. All the women he has loved: Sharon, Bernie and Rachel, have all left their imprint. His bond with Sam also left a tremendous imprint. And, very poignantly, his relationship with Tony Stark. In the 616 the Avengers (Tony, Thor, Hank and Jan) found Steve, and right away Tony took Steve under his wing. Gave him a home, helped him adapt, was fully committed in integrating Steve to the future. Ultimates!Steve didn’t have that. He was found by SHIELD, and unfortunately SHIELD was not really invested in getting to know Steve Rogers, they wanted Captain America, thus Steve Rogers got buried.

For 616!Steve, the people Steve surrounded himself with, the ones who said ‘you know, Captain America is great and all, but I really want to get to know Steve Rogers, can you bring him out, please’ made all the difference. So while Steve’s origins in the MCU matches that of the Ultimates universe, the various MCU writers have completely different takes on Steve’s personality.

I honestly believe that Joss Whedon was writing Ultimates!Steve. I also believe, because they’ve stated as much, that Markus and McFeely resent Joss for it and are very adamantly writing 616!Steve. I actually posted that quote from them once were they cast aspersions to Whedon’s characterization of Steve, just a minute let me find it… ah, here it is, from the 2016 Markus and McFeely SDCC panel…

McFeely: We don’t think of him quite as square as he was in the Avengers.
Interviewer: Darker edges basically?
Markus: He is… he’s a little more… he is a boy scout in the Avengers. And I don’t think our Steve ever was… that… pure. I mean, he’s pure, that’s the whole basis of him, but he’s not naïve.
McFeely: That said, if I had written “there’s only one god, ma'am and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t dress like that” I would be really happy.
Markus: See, I would have cut it.

So that’s probably way more than you wanted, but yeah, as in everything, it depends on which writer is writing him.

Magnets; 1220 words

The trip to the hospital is mostly silent.

Isak seems to have gone into shock, leaning against Even in a daze, and the boys are coming down from the adrenaline rush.  Isak is all Even can focus on, though.  The boys don’t need him; they’re only here to be there for Isak.

Isak who got hurt because of Even.

Not directly, but Even feels the guilt so vividly it’s as if he hit Isak himself.  The thought actually makes his stomach heave, but he’s adamant not to throw up on the tram and stress Isak out.  Isak feels so light against his side, as if he isn’t even there.

But no, Even’s arm is securely around Isak’s shoulders to keep him close.  Under the grimy layer of blood – that Even tried his best to clean off – Isak looks more grey than white.  He doesn’t seem to be having trouble breathing, and Even silently thanks whatever guardian angel Isak may have.  He’s pretty sure watching Isak unable to breathe would be too much for his already fried nerves to deal with.

He knows logically that there’s always a chance he could run into people he knew at Bakka.  He just wasn’t expecting to be so fucking exposed when it happened.  It wasn’t like they’d been at the same bar and happened across each other.  Even had been right up there on the god damn stage like a sacrificial lamb for the slaughter.

That’s how it felt anyway.

His life had flashed in front of him up on that stage, and for a split second all he could think was Isak can’t find out like this and I’m not ready.

It had all been such a blur, but for as long as he lives Even will never forget the crack of bone colliding with bone.

“Even, our stop.” Magnus nudges his shoulder and all Even can do it nod, helping Isak up and pulling him in close for the walk into A&E.

Even’s starting to think he might be in shock as well.  He doesn’t feel like he’s attached to his body at all.  He tries to concentrate on the places he’s connected to Isak as they leave the warm Norwegian evening behind them and enter the harsh cold of the emergency room.

So Enzo died.

Seriously, is anyone actually surprised? Of course he died. I knew he would since S8 started. He was just some random-ass, irrelevant character that only got any significance paired up with Bonnie … and in a fucking flashblack episode at that. You think Bonenzo was going to get a happily ever after, written that way? Lol no.

If Enzo comes back in the finale?  It just means Enzo died so Bonnie could be put through completely unnecessary grief for plot. It symbolizes hatred of her character. Bonenzo symbolizes hatred of her character. Everything on this show symbolizes hatred for her character and you are naïve to think otherwise.

You think Bamon’s going to happen now? Lol no. Because Damon belongs to the sacred Elena and Bonnie’s just meant to serve Elena. God forbid you pair her with a male lead or pair her with ANYONE. Canon ships (Bonenzo, Beremy) or potential ships (Bonkai, Bamon), JP fucks them all up because to her Bonnie ain’t good enough for ANYONE.

Bonnie never gets to be happy. JP is a racist, obsessed fangirl that goes out of her way to make sure she has the worst of everything. She was depowered for nearly all of S8 for no goddamn reason and gets it now conveniently when the plot demands it. Because Bonnie has never been a character for Plec. Bonnie is a plot device. A sacrificial lamb. If she dies for DE and reunites with Enzo in the afterlife or gets some fucked unrequited love for Damon and then dies for DE, I wouldn’t be surprised by any of this. I don’t care what bullshit we heard about Bonnie getting a “unpredictable happy ending”, knowing Plec, it’s going to be unsatisfactory.

Bonnie Bennett deserves everything. She deserves the world. She deserves it all and will get nothing because this is Plec’s world. Expect nothing else.

“The disguising of the terror of love in a piece of mindless, innocuous pop is an intriguing concept. Better The Devil You Know contains one of pop music’s most violent and distressing love lyrics…..When Kylie sings these words, there is an innocence to her voice that makes the horror of the chilling lyric all the more compelling. The idea presented within this song, dark and sinister and sad, that love relationships are by nature abusive, and that this abuse, be it physical or psychological, is welcomed and encouraged, shows how even the most seemingly harmless of love songs has the potential to hide terrible human truths. Like Prometheus chained to his rock, the eagle eating his liver night after night, Kylie becomes Love’s sacrificial lamb, bleating an earnest invitation to the drooling, ravenous wolf to devour her time and time again, all to a groovy techno beat. “I’ll take you back, I’ll take you back again.” Indeed, here the love song becomes a vehicle for a harrowing portrait of humanity, not dissimilar to the Old Testament psalms. Both are messages to God that cry out into the yawning void, in anguish and self-loathing, for deliverance.“ - Nick Cave
