the rules for being human

markd1176  asked:

' ...... the children of Moon, Night, Lilith and Faerie, all are souled. It seems that you rules as to what does and does not constitute a human being are stricter than our own. Do you intend to challange Heaven, like that other Morning Star ..... ' - Raziel in City of Glass. Surely Raziel's own words should carry a lot of weight with the Clave, if Clary were to testify as to what she heard. It would be a strong argument against the Cohort.

This is an interesting question. Clary very likely already has made this testimony. What Raziel said to Valentine wasn’t a surprise. Shadowhunters have known for a long time that Downworlders have souls, or at least that there is no good reason to believe that they don’t. But there are always people who believe that they want to believe, and people who will interpret what they hear in a way that is consistent their preexisting beliefs.
None of the discussion of restricting Downworlder rights in Lord of Shadows touches on whether or not they have souls. Shadowhunters are perfectly capable of discriminating against their own. The root of the Cohort’s hatred of Downworlders is xenophobic fear, not logic.
Essentially you’re asking the question “Why, if God said ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill,’ do we still have war?” I wish I could answer. But as a novelist, I tend to be more focused on exploring questions than on answering them. : )

Something I Learned at Age 11

The teacher of the gifted program at my elementary school gave us a paper to keep along with our final report card of the fifth grade. I’ve had this paper ever since, and when I’m feeling especially down, I read it to motivate myself. Without further ado, here are The Rules For Being Human:

“1) You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period of this time around.

2) You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called Life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant.

3) There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error: Experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately “works”.

4) A lesson is repeated until learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson.

5) Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

6) “There” is no better than “here”. When your “there” has become a “here”, you will simply obtain another “there” that will again look better than “here”.

7) Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.

8) What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools, resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

9) Your answers lie inside of you. The answers to Life’s questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

10) You will forget all of this.”

So, I'm impressed with quite a lot about your writing, but one of the things I'm impressed with the most is how you do characters. The characters are just really /Real/ and alive and vivid. My characters are round and have flaws and motivations and everything that smart people say good characters need to have, but. They're still just not as /Real/ as yours. So if you have time, could you give some tips for developing characters? Thanks!

Dear protecterwinsmith,

Let’s say someone asked you to draw a person.

If you’d never drawn a person before or thought you didn’t have much time, you might do one of these guys:

Example A: stick dude. A stick dude is recognizable as a person because it follows the baseline, easiest rules of personhood. It’s got a head, a torso, a familiar arrangement of limbs. You don’t need more to get the concept of “person” across.

Now, if you had a bit of experience drawing people or thought you had more time, you might do something more like

Example B: Cartoon Dude. Cartoon Dude is even easier to recognize as a human. He follows the rules of personhood even more: he’s got facial features, ears, hair, clothing, shoes. You can tell one cartoon dude from another cartoon dude. You can populate an entire series with cartoon dudes and the storytelling would work, because they would effectively follow the baseline rules of human anatomy as well as being unique enough to tell apart.

Now let’s say you had a bit more time or you had some more experience drawing people and someone asked you to draw a human realistically. Depending on how much you’d done it, you might get

Example C: 3-D dude without reference. A 3-D dude drawn without reference is even more recognizable as human. He can hold all sorts of nuance in his expression because he follows the baseline rules of personhood even better than the previous two. More nuance means more empathy from the viewer, and more empathy usually means more emotional resonance.

And finally, let’s say someone asks you to draw a human but gives you an actual person to look at. In the same amount of time given, you might end up with

Example D: Portrait with reference. This guy (one of my brothers, in fact) follows the rules of personhood, their effectiveness limited only by my ability to capture them in the time given or by my level of experience. He’s recognizable as both a person and an individual because of the specificity of his facial features, and moreover, he is unlikely to look like any other person I would draw using this method because of my close adherence to his, you know, actual face.

If you think about this in terms of characters, you could build a novel with any one of these sorts of character.

Example A: A novel built with stick man characters would be incredibly stylized. Fairy tales are often stick figure characters. Instead of being fully-fleshed individuals, they’re types. This is the stick figure woodsman (we can tell it’s him, he’s drawn with an ax). This is the princess (we can tell it’s her, she’s got a crown and some long hair added to the stick figure). This is the knight (we can tell it’s him, he’s got a sword and a stick horse). People don’t actually look like stick figures, but as long as the characters are all stick figures, the narrative still works at some level, because it tells you the rules and follows them, even if they aren’t the rules of reality. The moment you draw one character as something more than a stick figure, though, the viewer suddenly realizes how the others are merely made of straight lines.

Example B: When I first began to write, I used to write novels with accidental cartoon characters. I knew I couldn’t populate a novel with stick figures, so I tried to flesh them out. What makes a human a human? I asked myself desperately. Specifics! I made character worksheets and dutifully filled them out with attributes. Height, hair color, eye color, hobbies, place of residence, parental occupation, etc. etc. I ended up with characters who followed the rules of being human, and they could carry a story, but they still didn’t feel real.

I’m skipping Example C for now, because it’s a byproduct, for me, of failing to remember the lessons of Example D.

Example D: Example D is how I build characters now. I begin by studying real people instead of by creating lists of traits. I end up with shadows I forgot to draw in my cartoon version, hair that looks like actual hair instead of what I sort of remember what hair looks like, and feet that have all the toes drawn in because with a reference, I can remember how to accurately draw a pinkie toe. Real people are complicated and surprising. If I were building a character with a fear of water without looking at a real person, I might give them the phobia because they’d nearly drowned once: the easiest and most logical answer. It wouldn’t necessarily be wrong — it would follow rules that a reader would understand. But if I looked at a real person with a fear of water, I might discover that their fear developed because of an obsession with quantifying the abstract, and trying to understand the concept of an infinite body of water made them anxious. A much more complicated answer, but more specific and more real because of it. If I populate a book with characters built like this, I’m going to end up with a nuanced story that should have more emotional resonance. Moreover, the more I study real humans and build characters from them, the less I have to lean on real humans to make secondary characters. As I learn the more subtle rules of how people’s personalities are made, I can start to build new humans who don’t exist — who nonetheless appear as if they could.

Example C: I’m returning to example C because it’s a cautionary tale for me. Even though I feel that I’m worlds better than that old version of me writing cartoony people who could only exist in a two-dimensional place, if I get lazy with my character development, or if I try to create a sort of person I’ve never met in real life from scratch, I can still end up with one of these weird cartoon-realistic hybrids. A character who nearly looks real but lacks the subtle, observed nuances that I can only get from keeping an eye on real life. These characters follow the rules, and they have back stories and hobbies and nuance, but they’re still lacking the surprising, non-linear subtleties of a real person, or they’re lacking the specificity that comes from studying a real-life elbow and carefully transcribing the shape of it.

There are particular sorts of things I look for in real people when I’m stealing bits and bobs, but that is a topic for another blog post. For now, I’m going to go figure out why I still can’t draw feet.

WOW  — just wow. I hit 1k followers just about five months ago and last night i actually reached that 2k milestone  🎉 I’m a little bit speechless, because i never thought that so many people would enjoy and love those shitty edits of mine and would actually want to talk to me about my fave characters, my life and literally just anything? It’s amazing and i’m beyond grateful for all of the support and appreciate each and everyone of you; especially my lovely mutuals. And even though all of this is still beyond me, i wanted to give the following people a big and plushy shoutout!
Thanks for following and i love you, guys!  💜

@banesfuture  💜
of course my sweet parabatai has to be the first person on my list that’s going to be mentioned  — i don’t make the rules. mags, you lovely human being. i don’t think i can put my feelings for you into words that actually make sense, but i’m going to try. you’re one of the most amazing people i ever got to meet and i’m beyond grateful for your existence. we’re basically the same person which, let’s be honest, sometimes creeps the shit out of us, but at the end of the day that’s probably one of the reasons why i love you as much as i do. you share my love for harry shum jr and don’t even get me started on necks and collarbones and all the thirst (yes, we need some holy water, babe.) you also share my love for poetry and prose and you’re one of those people i can talk to about literally anything. you talk to me about life changing decisions, drag me for my typos, encourage and support me to be the best version of myself, send me cute pictures of your kitties to cheer me up, send me funny memes and videos, bless my day with your beautiful selfies and most importantly you’re always there for me. and you always make sure that i never forget about that. i’m honoured to be your friend and i love you so much!

●  @wonderchesters  💜
DAMN GURL is the first thing that comes to my mind when i think about you, brooke. you’re not only one of the most beautiful and sweet girls i have ever seen (please never ever stop sending me those gorgeous selfies!) but also one strong and genuinely kind and caring person. you’re like a little sister to me, except for the fact that i’m the vodka mom friend™ and your mom would probably kick me out within two weeks :’) i love that you speak your mind and how enthusiastic you are when you talk about the things you love. you’re so open minded, share my sense of humour and i can have those 3AM kinda conversations with you at any time of the day. i’m so so glad that you’re a part of my life and that i’m able to call you my fufe. i love you! … and don’t forget the fact that, if someone were to hurt you, i’d fly over to the US in a second to wreak vengeance for you c; #lol

@canislytherinthings  💜
where do i start when it comes to you, yael? god. i remember the day i saw that you followed me and how i instantly freaked out for a second and had to remind myself that i’m an adult and that we fangirl in silence c; you were and always will be one of the editors i admire the most. you’re so incredibly talented   —  and i’m not only talking about gifs and editing in general, even tho i always get those heart eyes when i see you posted another one of those gorgeous sets of yours. but you’re also seriously talented in cheering me up when i’m at my worst and you make me feel like i can talk to you about anything. it doesn’t matter if it’s just fangirling and fandom talk or those moments when my anxiety is rising and it feels like it’s crushing me down; you’re there. and i can’t tell you how grateful i am for that. you’re such a kind, strong and intelligent woman and you inspire me. i love it when you talk about your religion and traveling, share your personal stories and expierences with me and the fact that i can still learn so much from you. please, don’t ever change and please, take me to jerusalem and show me the city. i love you so much!

●  @jaceslewis  💜
you’re the cutest little bean on this planet, brie. thank you so much for instantly writing me when i posted your blograte  —  we might’ve never talked if you didn’t, because i’m a shy chicken and i seriously wouldn’t want to miss you and our conversations for the world. you have a thing for poetry, just like me and are a quite talented poet yourself (even though you don’t always see that yourself) and i’m amazed at how much talent and kindness you carry in your heart and brain. the second we started talking i knew that i had made a new friend, because that’s how you treated me from the start, even though we didn’t really know each other at the time. you’re such a warm and loving person and way too precious for my anxious ass; seriously. i love your honesty, your humour, your love for stephen king and the stories about your family (#zwetschgenknödel are the best 😉) and how you’re not someone who’s quick to judge others and always makes sure the people around you are feeling welcome and good. i know you tend to underestimate yourself and that we haven’t talked that much lately, but please let me tell you that you’re an awesome human being and that you can do absolutetly everything you put your mind to. you don’t have to hide your talents, mein mädchen. i love you!

@mel-iorn  💜
it feels like i’m an open book to you, mel, but i love that feeling. when i’m talking to you i feel genuinely understood and most importantly safe. i don’t have to think about something twice when i’m talking to you, because i know i can be completely honest. you’re so open minded and i love that we share an interest and passion in other cultures and religions. if we could, we’d probably travel the whole world! i also love it when you send me poems and little texts that made you think of me, ramble in your tags and how we’re just on the same wavelength. you’re so unapologetically yourself (and that’s a gorgeous self btw!) and i admire that so much. even though we haven’t talked that much lately, it’s always a blessing to know and see you on my dash. you make me smile and i love you! (that’s a #leveup for our friendship, right? c; )

i want to throw puppies at you because you’re so perfect it frustrates me #absolutefaves  | |  blessed by your existence

Friendly reminder, lest we lose all common sense and decency. The Ten Commandments are neither profound nor difficult, at all. They are meant to distinguish us from barbarianism and narcissism. They are basic rules for being a human—bottom line. You don’t even have to believe in “God” or read these terms “literally” to comprehend the basic principle of love at any cost and the very clear prescription for humanity. Don’t do as your corrupt leaders do. Don’t do as your corrupt celebrities do. Don’t do as I do. Don’t do as the world implores you to “get what’s yours.” You are not entitled to anything. The breath you breathe is on borrowed time. Your days are numbered. Take captive all selfishness and evil and be abundant in life! Eradicate your bullshit. This is the day the Lord has made. Do as kindness and love concede to purity and grace and gratitude. Love your enemies. Love yourself. Give up your life for your brothers and sisters. Be a servant and a steward and nothing less than a saint. The world is abundant and I am so happy to be in it with you. Amen! — Sufjan Stevens

That post about the stolen art is scary! Do you know who else is affected? Credit is so important to artists and I would love to tell my artsy friends about it. Could you mention the name of the Facebook group or whose art was stolen? Or how I could access it? Thank you.

Thank you for this. I’ve been meaning to get the word on this issue, and I need all the help I can get.

The group is

And the matter here isn’t simply that the group members have been posting lots of art without crediting; it’s that they’ve vehemently refused to do so when requested. They kept going on and on about how it was not a requirement of the group to credit art even though @captain-is-king and I repeatedly pointed out that this wasn’t a matter of group rules but about the wishes of the artist(s). They insisted their sharing of art could only be a compliment to the artist and also that it was unrealistic to “force” someone to credit the source.

I found some of my art there too, and since they were so hostile (had actually told me they’d kick me out if I didn’t back off) so I reported those posts for copyright infringement, and when Facebook deleted those specific posts, the admin (because it was not just members arguing that crediting was unnecessary, but several admins as well) contacted me and told me that it wasn’t “okay” for me to report their posts just because I was “upset.”

So you see, these are people with complete disregard for someone else’s work. Hard work. And even though they’re clearly in violation of facebook’s guidelines, and, well, you know, basic intellectual property rights, they not only do not care, they think that it’s ridiculous for artists to want credit and “unrealistic” of them to expect even that.

They say, it can’t be forced. That they can’t be forced to credit artists. They’ll continue with their reposts, just like they have been before.

But you know what? I think they can be forced. I think they should be. If enough of us report their use of our artwork (Facebook doesn’t allow anyone else but the content creators to report copyright claims), and enough of their posts get deleted, I think they’ll most certainly find themselves forced to rethink their group rules about crediting the artist being decent human beings.

I have an incomplete list of some artists whose work I glimpsed there while looking for my. own. There are many, many more, but I no longer have access to that group because they kicked me out for reporting my art for copyright infringement. I’m tagging the ones I know at the bottom of this post. And if anyone reading this is in the group, it would be a great help if you could help out the artists whose work has been stolen. Or if you could all collectively ask the admins to understand the issue.

For those who aren’t in the group, and want to help, or if you think you art might be there, you’ll have to send in a request to be added as a member and you’ll be in once one of the admins have approved of your request. They’re a closed group and while their posts aren’t public, they do have a strong number of members, and occasionally even have a few authors in for Q and As, including our queen Marissa Meyer.

So, anyway, this post is getting long. Here, are the artists whose work I’ve seen posted without credits in the group:

The doors opened and you entered, keeping your head down so you didn’t seem too confident. The number one rule of being a human in the Volturi castle was not to piss off the vampires who dwelled there.

Eric Harris journal writings about Humanity

He said that everything apart from science and maths is manmade, he believed that because the lack of people who are aware and that realise this, that I personally believe this is why he labelled himself as “Godlike” in his own meaning as being aware that laws are made solely by other humans and that it does not dictate the laws of nature and that he was above people in being aware about how the world works in a natural way beyond society and modern human traditions and the human race being limited from their true natural free will. And also because humans no longer use or need basic survival skills and instincts they were given from birth apart from the sexual desire to mate and human bodily needs such as eating and whatever, we no longer need to hunt and kill to survive or use our brains for learning strategies of survival that it is causing humans to actually become dumber and weaker instead of become better and stronger beings that think for ourselves outside of Laws and authority. And that We adapt to a manmade society and way of life which is raising generations of humans to become dumber and weaker and less self aware because humans no longer need to live constantly aware of their environment in order to survive but instead follow strict rules that have been enforced onto the majority by other human beings that make up governments in order to control people and make people live their way of life instead of their own way of life in entirety. Many people do not acknowledge this part of Erics journal and fail to realise what an important part it played in the events that followed.

Anon: What do you think about the whole idols are fangirl’s boyfriends thing? It makes me really uncomfortable to watch it, the other day i saw a fansing and cringed everytime someone called them oppa. I feel it feeds people being obsessed with them, which can end up in some of them not respecting idol’s privacy or their close relationships (like hating on them for having girlfriends), and is also objectifying them?  I’m asking because I honestly haven’t been in the  kpop culture very long, so I wanted  to consult you about it.

I’m not a history buff, but I am aware the idol industry was first established back in Japan some decades ago. But the core premise of what an “idol” is hasn’t really changed since then. Idols are manufactured, and I know that can sound like an ugly word, but that’s the truth: kids are scouted, companies invest in them, and they help create a marketable “image” that they can sell. And this “illusion” - that these young men and women are our friends, the boy/girl next door, or even the “ideal” boy/girlfriend… that’s actually an intended part of the product.

So what I’m saying is this: There is supposed to be some suspension of disbelief from both sides of the party.

ARMY really isn’t Bangtan’s girlfriend and JJK isn’t really my oppa - we know this, they know this. Fortunately, a large majority of the people abide by social rules and respect their privacy like decent human beings. And as long as you’re operating within normal social boundaries and treating the boys/girls with the same respect you’d treat anybody else, there really shouldn’t be a problem. Even the “cringey” fans you’re talking about - and hey, I have enough self-awareness to know that I’m one - will go onto form healthy relationships with other people, get married (or not; it’s up to them), and look fondly back at BTS as just another phase in their lives. That’s normal, and that’s probably what’s going to happen to 99.99 percent of fans.

But some people, regardless of anything, are just more wired to be obsessed. The “idol” industry is like adding fuel to their fire. Sasaengs are deplorable and they have no excuse for their shit behavior. (And like this is sort of related but.. why the fuck did some fan sites attend Kook’s graduation? I admire their work and shit but if you’re not family and invited press, then don’t go to their personal events. You’re a fan, not a friend;;;; Some people need to chill and this comes from me so…)

And let’s be honest, some people are just straight up dicks. It doesn’t matter if somebody is young or have other more personal reasons as to why they’re rude - that doesn’t excuse the fact that you’re rude.

And finally, Anon, the idol fandom just isn’t for most people. You don’t have to dive head first into this craziness. Being a casual fan is A-OK. Buy their albums if you want, attend a concert, avoid youtube and twitter (this is good advice for everybody really), and don’t feel pressured to be a part of the group. Do what feels comfortable for you; you’d be surprised to know there are many more people like you out there.

7 Ways Relationships Change Over Time

It is inevitable, long-term relationships provide comfort, love and support. At the benign everyone tries to put their best foot forward, but as the relationship settle you learn each other’s quirks and secret habits you do when you think nobody is watching.

Comic artist Sarah C. Anderson composes hilariously honest illustrations, which capture the authenticity and grit of being in love and comfortable. The artist behind “Sarah’s Scribbles,” Anderson recently published a book called Adulthood is a Myth: A Sarah’s Scribbles Collection, where she doodles the existing challenges of adulthood in our society.

We urge everyone to check our her realistic and hilarious blurbs below.

We have power… Our power isn’t in a political system, or a religious system, or in an economic system, or in a military system; these are authoritarian systems… they have power… but it’s not reality. The power of our intelligence, individually or collectively IS the power; this is the power that any industrial ruling class truly fears: clear coherent human beings. ~ John Trudell

Type Spotting Guide

People want to type others for a variety of reasons but when you look around the internet for opinions about famous figures or fictional characters, you will often find very conflicting assessments. Sometimes this is because those doing the analyzing do not know enough or perhaps they identify too closely with the subject, and in terms of fiction, it can be due to complicated writing or inconsistent characterization. When you cannot ask someone for clarification about their behavior, the only thing you can do is look for clues and make guesses, which then opens up the typing process to error and misinterpretation. My approach to typing other people always involves “building a case” by methodically gathering details and analyzing evidence for/against all sixteen types.

Just throwing this out here – I actually have this largely plotted out, but just wanted to get this first part written down in case I come back to it. Think it would be just a couple of parts, it’s not meant to be a HUGE story (yeah, I say that now), but something that got kicked off with me thinking ‘what if Neil was Death instead of Andrew’ – like in a lot of stories.  Consider this an homage of sorts to Neil Gaiman’s incredible Sandman universe, with a lot of tweaking.

Death didn’t understand where humans had gotten the whole ‘one day out of a year, Death will live as a human’ story, but then, he didn’t understand a lot when it came to humans. He didn’t understand the whole skeleton with a scythe thing, either, though his uncle took great delight in mocking him for his overlarge hooded t-shirts and sweatshirts, which he supposed was only fair after how much he’d mocked the… well, for how often he’d mocked Wrath for looking like a stereotypical gangster the last several decades. Wrath’s suits were better now, while Death always had favored something that he could pull over his head and hide his face while walking around, even if no one could see him unless he willed it.

He missed cloaks. Things just hadn’t been the same since the nineteenth century. Though the one good thing about the twenty-first was that so far, he hadn’t seen his father. He’d like to keep it that way, even if Destruction was busy as always.
