❀ Yooo I was bad and didn’t actually do anything at 500, so here I am at 550 instead!
I figured it’s time to show some positivity/shout outs for my great mutuals, and everyone I interact with! Before I start the (very) long list, I’d just like to say thanks to everyone who follows this blog and puts up with my constant inactivity, lots of OOC, tons of incoherencies, and then of course the RPing on this blog!
I’ve truly enjoyed running this blog, even despite my anxiety and constant mood jumps that have come with it. I’ve truly enjoyed meeting people through this, even if I no longer talk with them or they have left tumblr. I love being able to talk with those that I’ve met and interacted with though, and you’ve all no doubt had huge impacts on me that I will forever be grateful for! I honestly have no clue where I’d be without you all. While I still am struggling a bit with a few things, everyone that I talk with is helpful and supportive which honestly is so kind??? This blog and those I’ve met through it have helped me through when I’ve been feeling down and feeling awful, and I can’t say how thankful I am for it.
Also, I highly recommend following all those that I list, as they’re all quality RPers and people that I enjoy talking and interacting with! ❀
@inverted-iris/ @dxgital-dolls - OMG SCARFY U ARE SUPER NICE IDK WHERE I’D BE WITHOUT UR KIND WORDS AND ENCOURAGEMENT YOU HAVE MY ETERNAL GRATITUDE. If you’re not on here don’t feel bad, I made this in a hurry and I probably just forgot, it probably means I havent been following you very long, or you haven’t been very active lately. If i follow you I still appreciate the quality content you bring to my dash. Also some of you have more than one blog that i follow so you may be on here two or even three times that just means you’re pretty cool i guess. Bolded are just some people that really stand out.
Again thank you guys so much for drawing nice things, providing good commentary, making nice graphics/gifs, reblogging good stuff, talking to me, and everything else you do!!!! You’re all pretty great.
Was DashCon worth the $65 though? (Keep in mind a 3 day pass to New York Comic Con is the same price)
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: I’ve paid more for WizardWorld Chicago and had a worse time. Was it worth the price? It was for me. But … I live close enough to drive there and back every day and can sleep in my own bed, and I can raid my own fridge for food. That saves a lot of the cost for me.
That aside, I am strongly considering going next year in Indianapolis and that will require me to get a hotel room and drive 3-4 hours. I think it’s likely to be worth it, judging from my experience this year. I had a wonderful time. It was an extremely affirming environment, people were kind, treated each other with respect and joy and there was some very serious and intense discussions of geekery, fandom, lgbtqiap+ identities and the way they all intersect.
I felt safe and unafraid of someone violating my personal and physical boundaries, which I can’t say about previous cons I’ve attended. The turnout was between 1500 and 2000 people, so it felt intimate and I met a lot of really amazing people. Like a lot. My dash is going to look so foreign tomorrow when I finally get a chance to look at it again!
Artist Alley had some pretty awesome independent artists, too. It was like strolling through the high-quality aisle if etsy were a physical store (which is a good thing, from me).
I have zero regrets about spending my money and my time at DashCon and I look forward to seeing what happens next year when they’ve ironed out the wrinkles and learned the lessons from this year’s mistakes and bad turns. There was an inordinate amount of bad luck compounding the actual planning mistakes.
My personal theory, FWIW, on the Friday mess is that the hotel event staff reported the lower than expected turnout and reservation/check-in numbers to the Marriott corporate level and the corporate number crunchers didn’t think they’d raise the final 25% of the event reservation cost that DashCon would have paid throughout the weekend as previously agreed. Since they assumed they wouldn’t make the final amount, they called in their marker early, assuming that if they didn’t get it, they could shut down the con and keep the 75% they had been paid months ago. And not expose their wedding parties to Homestuck Trolls on Saturday night (I know nothing about Homestuck, but their costumes were fan-fricking-tastic - I’m very impressed). And if they couldn’t shut down the con, they’d at least have all of their money.
But, draining the DashCon budget and resources 48 hours early caused a snowball effect in chilling potential walk-in registrations on Saturday since tumblr blew the fuck up Friday night, in making WTNV worry that they wouldn’t get paid and changing their original agreement on Saturday morning to demand that they be paid their entire fee in cash up-front, which DashCon simply couldn’t do on two-hours notice, despite their best efforts, in raising the panic and anxiety levels in DashCon staff offices and all of the smaller errors (including the hotel shifting the hotel rooms for Noelle and a few other guests off the master account by mistake - which was fixed as soon as admin learned of it, they said) aggregating into just buckets of chum being thrown at the feeding frenzy on the shark side of tumblr.
There’s nothing that gets internet people more charged up than some delicious schaedenfreude, and DashCon served that up in truckloads. People were rooting for it to fail from the start, so each small thing was already being magnified and then the big things became enormous. The thing is, though, at the actual con, people were having a really great time over all. I was incredibly impressed by the level of discourse being had in the more serious panels by people one and two decades younger than me. I have two daughters, 10 and 12 years old, and if they are half as savvy as some of the kids were this weekend, who aren’t even old enough to drive, I will be incredibly proud.
And the silly panels were, in fact, fun and silly and whimsical and exactly what they were intended to be. This wasn’t a symposium, despite the more serious stuff. People were there to have a fun time, and despite tumblr honestly attacking them all weekend, I saw an awful lot of people having an awful lot of fun.
There are a lot of people who came out of DashCon with some very sour experiences and who had a much worse time, but they certainly weren’t the majority. There will always be people who have a bad time at every con, through sheer chance. The failures of the dashcon staff in some of their planning increased the chance of people having a bad time at this particular con, but I think that people were far happier than they could have been because the staff did everything they could to smooth over the rough spots and were as absolutely transparent as they could have been, all weekend long, despite whatever nonsense you read on here from people who weren’t there.
So. Was it worth $65? Hell yes, it was worth $65 to me and my girlfriend both. This was the most pleasant and chill and fun con experience I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to a lot of cons. This one, probably because of the adversities along the way, felt special, too, like we were all experiencing this thing together. As a first-time con thrown by young people who have never run a con before, I’m willing to grant it a lot of lattitude in passing judgment, but they don’t really need much. It wasn’t the world’s best, biggest or most successful con, but it was certainly a fun, safe and interesting con, and I am happy.
