the perfect way to end an essay

Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me When I Was Entering University

These are based on my personal experience (and that of people I know directly). Learn from our mistakes, peeps! Life’s too short to keep on repeating mistakes you could have avoided and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make original ones of your own, I guarantee you.

1. Once you have the necessary basic courses done, take the harder courses within your first two years if possible - if you’re applying to grad school they’ll usually look at only the grades of the last two years. (In Canada, anyways - don’t take my word on that for other countries!)

2. If your university has multiple campuses, don’t assume courses are transferable just because the campus is part of the same university.  I know, it makes no sense, but most of the time they don’t actually transfer. Check with your advisor first.

3. Always get   everything  your advisor tells you in writing. That way if the information they gave you was wrong you have a way of proving the mistake was not on your end.

4. a) If you can, take a course during the Spring and one during the Summer semester. That way you can take one less class during the normal semester and make your life a bit easier. You usually end up with a week or two between semesters anyway, so it’s not like you’ll have no vacation whatsoever.

b) If you can, make it a class you know you’ll need to take at some point but you know you’re likely to struggle in/have more work assigned; that way you only have the one class to focus on and you can actually do well on it instead of barely scraping by.

c) Don’t take more than one class per semester in the spring/summer semesters. One a semester is more than manageable. Two is insanity, because they’re compressed courses.

5. Always save screenshots of any and all payments you make online, regardless of whether you get an email reciept. If it gets sent to the wrong place or there’s some internal error you’ll have a copy to show as proof of payment.

6. Do your best on the little assignments. They’re a great grade cushion for the big tests. If you go to a small university (or attend small classes), it will also show your professor that you’re a responsible student, so if you have a problem with handing in something on time in the future they’ll be more likely to be lenient and understanding.

7. Back up  everything. Always. Without fail. Don’t put it off for even a day.

8. Take opportunity of your resources. If your school has a writing centre,  use it. Even if you just want someone to help you get your essay planning in order, look over your final copy of a paper, or to look over the bibliography to make sure it’s ok.

9. If you have the books or readings before class starts, get ahead on notes and reading as much as possible. ‘Cause once the semester starts, ain’t nobody got time for that.

10. Start on your essays as soon as possible, even if it’s just choosing a topic and doing preliminary research. Later on in the semester when due dates and exams pile up it’ll save you a world of grief.

11. Don’t bother to make perfect citations as you write, but make sure you have a way of knowing where the citation came from. You never know what you’re gonna cut out in the end, so taking the time to make perfect citations as you write your essay is a waste of time; but you need to have some way of knowing where it came from so you’re not having to hunt it down later. I usually just use a keyword I know relates to a certain article (or even make a list of which keyword goes with what) and then go back in the end and make the citations.

12. As much as I hate doing them, essay planning actually helps. It saves on a lot of editing later. Dammit.

I was reading this lengthy article/review of episode 10 on this woman (an author’s) blog just yesterday and it was all I LOVE THIS SHOW I LOVE VICTOR KUBO IS A GENIUS (mentions Kubo like 80 times but never mentions Sayo because lol who is that), but then it kept being so weirdly harsh on Yuuri? Like basically mocking him and his intentions and pretty much everything about him and going on about how ‘Victor tolerates it because he loves him so much Victuuri is true love but thank god for Victor’.

It was so upsetting, especially because this isn’t anything new. I’ve seen fans I even otherwise respected do billion word essays on Victor’s perfection and then follow up with an essay on how Yuuri is a jerk and ‘we need to acknowledge that’. I’ve seen prominent Victor fans say that Yuuri was ‘sort of yandere’ in episode eleven. Don’t even get me started on how these fans never hold episode 7 garage scene against Victor, but hold the end of ep 11/beginning of ep 12 against Yuuri. The way people talk about Yuuri in that scene hurts.

So many fans don’t even try to understand Yuuri and just constantly undermine him. They undermine his skating, and they undermine him as a person.

They Won’t Know I Love You

Character: Young!Sirius Black

POV: You

Your family was strict and expected the most of you; you were supposed to be the idle student and daughter, head girl or a prefect, and ready to marry by the time you leave Hogwarts. They expected only perfection. And they were very headset about it, nothing could steer you away from it. Especially not boys. (Though you were somehow supposed to be ready to marry.)

However you didn’t entirely like this path of life, and you refused to let it stop you from doing what you want to. Which involved a lot of maneuvering away from schoolwork. Don’t get me wrong: You always did it. Just mostly late at night while everyone was asleep and the class was only three hours away. But it worked out.

Your muggleborn friends would introduce you to their music (mainly rock) and you guys would stay up late in your dormitory with silencing spells around it, dancing until you passed out or saw the golden sun peak out. Sometimes you snuck out past curfew. And secretly you and a few of your friends explored the Forbidden Forest. You would even flirt with some boys. You would have fun.

Of course being in the same year as the marauders always helped with that. As immature as they could get, they made you laugh. Their pranks never failed to impress and entertain, teachers scolding the group for them made it debatably that much better. Some students disapproved. You couldn’t even bring yourself to shake your head.

And as you watched them over the years you (unwilling) fell for the Black boy.

It was five in the morning. Your charms class started in two hours and you had only written the half of your essay. Working on it, you mentally cursed yourself for it. Of course you spent the last week swimming in the Black Lake and dancing to muggle rock late at night instead of doing your homework.

You sat, hunched over your parchment. The hair on your head was pulled into a messy bun with strands falling out and your fingers were stained with black ink. After writing for so long your hand was already cramping. It was too dark for you to read your notes. So you alternated between using your wand to read your pages and pages of notes and actually writing the essay with the dimmest of light from the dying fire.

Suddenly someone sat down next to you. The quill falling from your hand to the table. You quickly grabbed your wand and point it towards them.

“Lumos.” You harshly whispered.

The white light that burst forth from your wand landed on an all too familiar face. A pair of grey eyes stared back at you. Mr. Sirius Black. He blinked and recoiled, squinting into the bright light.

“Put that down love.” He muttered.

“Sirius! Why are you up so late?” You hissed, lowering your wand slightly.

“I could ask you the same.” He leaned forwards as he talked. You rolled your eyes and ran your hand across to table to find your quill again. Sirius spoke up again. “So why are you still awake?”

“Charms essay.” You groaned, earning a chuckle from him.

“It’s the night before, not even, why don’t you just not do it?” He asked, staring at you.

“I can’t just not do it. My parents want me to be perfect.” You explained, setting your quill on your essay.

“Ha.” Sirius scoffed. You looked at him, clearly offended. “What? It’s nothing against you. But aren’t you the same Y/N L/N that somehow wiggled her way out of detention for swimming in the lake and supposedly befriending and riding a huge squid and going into the Forbidden Forest past curfew.”

“Uh.” You started, but he cut you off.

“There’s also a rumor going around that you and a few friends went skinny dipping in that lake.”

“Well-”

“And Y/F/N was talking about how late you guys ended up staying dancing to rock music like two days ago.”

“That-”

“Because I’m pretty sure that not doing one essay won’t ruin your reputation.” He finished.

“Yeah, but my parents will know if I miss an essay.” You pointed out, hovering your wand over your notes and reading a bit more.

“You mean they don’t know and of that stuff.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I would be grounded until I die.”

“What do they expect from you?”

“Top marks, some sort of title, and ready to marry by the end of school.”

“Marry?”

“Yes, I said marry.”

“That’s bloody insane. Besides haven’t you only been on like one date?”
“Yes, because I’m supposed to get good grades and date without boys distracting me at all. So I picked the former.”

“Marry.”

He muttered the word to himself again, acting like it was the craziest idea he’s heard. Marriage. It was pretty foreign to the both of you apparently. You looked up from your essay. Watching him fondly as he stared at his lap, biting his lip. A small smile formed on your face.

You wrote the last sentence to your essay. If you went to bed now you should be able to get an hour of sleep, hopefully.

As you looked back to him, you found his eyes meeting yours. You must have seen something in them. Because a wave of something like confidence washed over you and you leaned towards him. Dear God. Something in you urged you to pull away, it told you that it wasn’t worth it. You didn’t know he felt the same way. But you couldn’t help but ignore it, you’ve been living for the thrill of everything you do for a while now.

Your lips brushed his. And suddenly you pressed your lips to his. It didn’t take him long to react. He pulled you closer to him, moving his lips against yours. As he kissed you the world fell away. You couldn’t remember how long you’ve been waiting for this, and it felt surreal now that it was happening.

The two of you pulled apart and Sirius smirked at you. You picked up your stuff. Looking back at him, you could help but smile.

Finally. You thought to yourself.

“And they won’t know about that either.” You smirked and left, sleeping soundly with the memory.

The days in between

Little fluff and angst, but thought I would give writing ago again and see how it went.

The first time, it was just sitting on top of her laundry pile. She assumed the house elves had mistaken it for hers and planned to return it to him when he returned from Quidditch practice. She set about tidying her school supplies away and changed from her robes into more casual clothing before heading off to Gryffindor tower to meet the girls; Mary had a date tonight and they had all been sworn in to help her prepare.

“How can you possibly have a date, already?” Alice asked in astonishment, “we’ve been back for all of two minutes?!”

“Hardly, try two weeks!” Mary replied.

“That’s definitely later than last year, she was dating Sam on the Tuesday after we arrived.” Marlene replied flicking through her magazine, looking bored with the conversation.

“Guys, you’re here to help me prepare, remember?”

“Mary’s right, this isn’t helping you two,” Lily said sitting on the edge of Mary’s bed, “let’s see what you’re wearing then.”

After a long few hours of preparing Mary, Lily return to the Head’s dorm and attempted to complete a Charms essay due for Monday.

She didn’t see James for the rest of the night and hence forgot all about his jumper sitting in her trunk.

The second time it was an accident, she was lying in bed and had awoken during the night from a bad dream; all these newspaper articles about death eater attacks had now invaded her sleep. She couldn’t escape it. Glancing at the clock she noted the time, 5:27, she had to be up in an hour. Is it even worth going back to sleep? She thought to herself.

After deciding it wasn’t, she got out of bed and grabbed her latest novel to read in the common room. It was colder than she had expected at this time and rummaged in her trunk for a jumper to wear over the top of her pyjamas. She found the one she had forgotten about from last month and threw it on before heading to the common room.

Despite being very obviously too big for her, she was unaware that this jumper was not in fact hers and sat reading The Great Escape until James appeared down the stairs just over an hour later.

“Morning.” He said smiling at her, “have you been up a while?” he asked.

“About an hour, couldn’t sleep,” she replied.

“How come?” he asked as he came and sat on the opposite end of the couch to her.

“Just a bad dream. I got a ‘B’ on a potions essay and it was the end of the world!” She joked try to hide the fear she really felt.

James laughed with her but didn’t seem very convinced. She wasn’t laughing the same way she naturally would but he didn’t question it, despite being friendly for a while he was still never very sure when Lily was close to shouting at him again.

“Oh well, I’m going to shower before breakfast. Meet you down here in an hour?” James asked.

“Perfect! See you then,” Lily responded as they both stood off the couch and headed to their separate rooms.

It was just as Lily was getting undressed to go into the shower and she removed the jumper she saw the golden letters POTTER on the back of the shirt.

The third time it was because she needed the comfort. She felt so alone and there wasn’t anyone she could talk to. She wanted to talk to someone, but he was off on a date with some Tara-twit; not that she would ever admit to wanting to talk to him of course.

Her friends had tried to help, but they couldn’t understand and she just didn’t want to explain her feelings to them, she just wanted held and she just wanted him.

Lily pulled his shirt out from her bedside cabinet and put it on before returning to underneath her covers. She felt numb, her brain couldn’t process what she just heard. It was too much.

Professor Dumbledore’s words still rang in her ears and try and she might she just couldn’t shut them up! She felt angry, she felt hurt, she felt like her whole world had just imploded and there was nothing she could do about it.

Why does it have to be like this? Why did this have to happen? She thought.

She cried herself to sleep wearing James jumper, she needed to have something around her that belonged to someone she really cared about and someone that wasn’t dead.

The fourth time, was one week later. She had been absent from classes and everyone had noticed but only a few knew why. Feeling hurt and angry, Lily had yet to tell James what was wrong but took all her feelings out on him whenever he tried to help. It was straining their friendship, Lily knew that, but she couldn’t help it.

At least one of her friends was always with her, no matter what time of the day or night, as they didn’t want her to feel alone and segregated. James tried to badger them to tell him what was wrong, but out of obligation to Lily they refused.

One day Lily was lying on the couch as James return from classes, she was alone and reading yet another from her endless supply of books.

“Hi,” James said cautiously

“Hi,” Lily replied, she doesn’t look mad James though, so he sat at her feet on the other end of the couch. “How was class?”

“It was awful, as per, herbology is really not my thing.” James replied, smiling at her.

She smiled back before returning to read her book, she was wearing James’ jumper again but he didn’t notice.

“How are you?” James tried

“I’m embarrassed,” Lily confessed looking at him properly “I’m so so sorry for how I acted. It was hurt and took all my emotions out on you, that wasn’t fair and you didn’t deserve it. I’m sorry.”

James saw tears forming in her eyes and without thinking he grabbed her hand and pulled her in for a hug. He rested his chin on top of her head and she buried her head into his chest. They stayed like that as she continued to sob quietly into him.

It could have been minutes or hours that passed, neither knew, but when they eventually pulled apart James wiped his fingers under her eyes to brush her tears away.

“I’m always here for you, no matter how big or small the problem is, please remember that.” James whispered to her, he leaned in and gently kissed her forehead. That was all the encouragement Lily needed as she told him everything that had happened as he held her hand and wiped away her tears, almost as fast as they fell.

She told him about the arguments she had with her mother and father because of her relationship with her sister and how they didn’t come to see her off at the train because they had to go dress shopping for Petunia’s wedding. She confessed all the problems she had at home with her sister and how was never truly happy when she was there.

When she got on to the reason why she was so broken, James thought she was going to break in half because of how violently she was crying. But he just held her tight as she told him they had died in a car accident and how Petunia was arranging the funeral but Lily was allowed nothing to do with it.

Petunia blamed Lily; there was no reason for it, but she was hurting too and this was the only way she could cope. Lily knew that, but it didn’t make it hurt any less.

With nothing needing to be said, the pair lay there until they fell asleep with Lily lying on James’ chest still wearing his jumper.

The fifth time it was a rushed attempt to cover up the previous night. They were late for class, very late, and professor McGonagall was not the teacher you wanted to be showing up late to class to, especially as head boy and head girl.

Lily and James grabbed whatever clothes were nearest and threw them on as they ran out of their dorm and down to transfiguration.

Professor McGonagall gave them a stern look when they both arrived over 10 minutes late, but James spoke before she could,

“Sorry, Professor, we were finishing house point tallying and didn’t realise the time,” he lied with a cheeky grin. McGonagall knew he was lying but gave a curt “don’t let it happen again.” And returned to her lesson.

James took his seat next to Sirius, Peter and Remus as Lily took hers two rows in front with Alice and Marlene.

“Head duties, eh James?” Sirius asked with a suggestive wiggle of his eyebrows.

Looking confused, Remus coughed and drew his attention to this jumper Lily was wearing. Looking at the golden POTTER emblazed on the back gave their lie away, James looked sheepish but Sirius just patted him on the back as the other three boys laughed.

The sixth time she thought she was going to die. Her head spun whenever she sat up, she felt like she was going to vomit every time she opened her eyes and her nose was absolutely useless was it came to breathing. She was feeling very sorry for herself and James, being the very loving boyfriend that he was, sat beside her for the whole night after he returned from practice.

“Why don’t you go to the hospital wing” James asked genuinely concerned,

“Because she might make me stay overnight and I don’t wanna sleep without you here. So, no.” Lily replied stubbornly.

“Hellooooo?” Sirius shouted from the common room,

“In Lily’s room,” James responded, “Enter with caution, she may throw up at any minute!”

“Ew Evans, that’s most unappealing.” Sirius had now sat himself upon her chest at the end of her bed.

“Get out then, didn’t ask for you here,” was Lily’s response.

“Ouch Evans! I know we aren’t best friends yet but I thought you would treat me nicer than that!” Lily just rolled her eyes in response and pulled James’ jumper over her nose so she could breathe him in as she tried to sleep.

“I think I’m gonna be sick,” she mumbled as she ran into the bathroom. James got up to follow her but Sirius just looked disgusted and asked,

“Are you sure you aren’t pregnant?”

“Get OUT Sirius!” Lily demanded as she hung her head over the toilet seat.

The seventh time was the final quidditch match of their Hogwarts career; she couldn’t not wear it now. She roared and cheered with the rest of the crowd as the team flew high above their heads throwing the quaffle and chasing the snitch.

At this point, there was no reason to hide it. Lily wore his jumper proudly with red and gold all over her cheeks and the biggest smile on her face. The game was close and the snitch had been seen. Whoever caught it would win the match, either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, and then the Quidditch Cup.

Each side of the stadium screamed for their team as if they were competing against each other. With the final blow of the whistle the teams returned to the ground and the Gryffindor’s celebrated their triumphant win.

The crowd ran down to the pitch and as soon as he saw her, James ran toward Lily, picked her up and swung her around, her face beaming with nothing but pride. She pulled his neck down until their lips met and kissed him hard, for a moment they forgot they weren’t alone.

She wrapped her hand around his neck and ran her fingers through his hair as he wound his arms around her waist and picked her up until she was straddling his waist. If Remus hadn’t pulled them apart the crowd would have seen another show that might not have been as pleasant.

Lily remained in that jumper until very early the next morning when James was pulling it off her himself.

The eighth time was the worst day of her life. Her heart was pounding in her ears, she couldn’t hear what Mary was shouting at her. She felt nothing. There was blood, so much blood, all over her, all over Mary. There was so much blood.

She looked around, people were running and screaming and she wanted to help. In her head, she knew she could help, but her body wouldn’t move. Her best friend was lying on the floor, eyes open and glazed over. It was Marlene’s blood.

Mary dragged her with tears streaming down her face in any directions there wasn’t flashes of green light. There was so much blood. She felt nothing.

Mary almost collapsed with relief when she saw them. Remus, Sirius, Peter and James ran over to the girls and it was clear James was more freaked than he had ever been. She couldn’t hear what he was saying, she saw his face and his lips moving but couldn’t hear what he was saying. She felt nothing.

James picked her up and threw her over his shoulder as he ran with the four others until they couldn’t run any further. There was no one around and the screams and cries had been replaced with silence, an eerily deep and haunting silence.

Yet Lily still saw blood, so much blood.

They got home, she doesn’t know when or how. But they got home. James pulled his jumper off her and threw it to the ground as he pulled her into the bath, he sat her facing away from him and against his chest as the lay there in silence.

Lily hasn’t said anything but the tears don’t stop falling down her face, she’s shaking and petrified. She doesn’t know what’s happening. All she sees is blood; so much blood.

The ninth time it takes them by surprise.

“Lily? Did you just wet yourself?” James asked laughing

“No.” Lily turns to him, “that was my water!”

“oh, my god, oh my god! It’s happening? Like now? What do we do? The hospital…we need to go there!” James responds as he grabs the baby bag and apparates, leaving Lily still standing in the kitchen.

It takes him longer than she expects to return,

“It would be good if I took you with me though, wouldn’t it?” James asked

“Yes,” Lily replied laughing. She had never seen James look so out of it, it was the only thing distracting her from the pain.

As the pair arrived at the hospital, together this time, the nurse began to check them in.

“And your surname please?” she asked. James spun Lily around and he pointed to the back of her jumper.

“Potter then?” the nurse asked laughing as she wrote it on the chart. “Well good luck to you!”

Five hours later, she is still wearing his jumper until she takes it off, James charms it and dresses their new baby boy in it.

“Welcome to the family, the newest Potter!”

The tenth time is the final time. Harry is wearing it before he goes for a bath. Lily washes him and plays with the rubber broomsticks in the bath as James tidies his clothes away into his room.

The jumper stays there as the family play downstairs and get ready for bed, Lily takes Harry upstairs just as the door opens.

She hears James’ voice and she hears the other, the flash of green light is that last thing she sees as she runs with Harry into his room. Lily comforts Harry as she puts him in his cot, she promises him that he is so loved and that she was always love him no matter what happens.

As he enters the room she protects Harry with her life, in her last few moments she sees the jumper on the shelf and smiles as she remembers all the good times that jumper has seen. The memories almost distract her from the voice and the pain and the light.

Almost; but not quite.

Uhm hey? To be honest I am a big Zutara shipper but at the same time I am okay with Kataang too. I saw some posts, which are representing Aang "worse than he actually is". I think the only reason he does some inappropriate things is that he is just a kid who fell in love for the first time and doesn't understand how he should handle it in a right way. I think maybe if he was more mature and grown-up it would have turned out differently.

kafkaschild said: I am not trying to hate or something, I just feel bad for my baby because he is sometimes shown as a “misunderstanding little prick”, who doesn’t know anything about Katara’s feelings. And maybe I just want to protect him from such opinions who are cutting away the real beauty of his pure character. Like I said: He is just a kid and Bryke should have waited with such a serious relationship, cause he still don’t know how to act rightly. I hope you understand what I try to say.

kafkaschild said: Oh shit, I am sorry for spamming you here… I just want to add that some people say that Katara doesn’t even care about Aang. The fuck? She cares about him deeply and always looks out for him. Well, she acts more like a mother than a lover and I agree with that, but to say that she doesn’t love him, is wrong. She loves him. Unfortunately, she loves him like a mother, but not like a lover. I think that was everything I wanted to say. I am sorry for disturbing you with my rant.

Hey, first of all, I’m not the type to feel disturbed or get offended when a follower puts their calm, rational opinions in my inbox! I actually like getting mini essays from people. But, I will respond with my own…

Let me start by saying that a lot of my dislike for Aang is Bryke’s fault. The way they wrote him towards the end of the series and then in the comics turned him into this perfect angel of child who could never be wrong. So when you say: “Maybe I just want to protect him from such opinions who are cutting away the real beauty of his pure character.” I have to strongly disagree with you for a number of reasons:

First of all, no character should be protected from opinions. They all have flaws and they all get called out.

Unfortunately, Aang is the only one who never seems to be “called out.” While the other characters show tremendous growth, respond to challenges, and change their entire world view, Aang remains stagnant.

  • He remains unquestioned. He remains the same. His beliefs were never really challenged. He was never brought face to face with some of the consequences of what he had done. Bryke treated him as someone who was always right and anyone who had a differing opinion was wrong.
  • His belief in pacifism is never challenged. All of his friends are portrayed as being wrong.
  • His belief in forgiveness is never challenged. All of his friends, especially Katara, are portrayed as being wrong.
  • His massacre at the Northern Water Tribe is ignored.
  • His destruction of the Earth Kingdom fort is ignored.
  • His temperamental outbursts at anyone who dared disagree with him are ignored and all of these disagreers are portrayed as wrong and end up apologizing for their opinions.

To say he was a pure character, is to fall into the same trap that Bryke did.

Now there are a few things I can agree with you on:

He is just a kid who fell in love for the first time and doesn’t understand how he should handle it in a right way.

Precisely. He is young, immature, and needs to grow. All the more reason why he was not a good match for Katara- someone who was very mature, strongly opinionated, and passionate.

I think maybe if he was more mature and grown-up it would have turned out differently.

Again… you’re right. If Aang had developed his beliefs a little more, faced some real character challenges, or just grown up to the point that he could respect differing opinions, he may been a better match. However, this does not happen in the show prior to the kiss, nor does it happen in the comics. In fact, his god complex only worsens in the comics.

Bryke should have waited with such a serious relationship, cause he still don’t know how to act rightly.

YEP. What twelve year old knows how to treat a girl right? If Kataang was destined to be endgame, Bryke could’ve spent more time developing a mature relationship between the two- one that grew over time until both were ready and old enough.

Side note: This is why Zutara appeals to so many of us. It was a relationship that slowly built upon respect, then forgiveness, then understanding and trust. It was slow. It had natural chemistry.

Zuko listened to her and didn’t try to run her over with his beliefs. If Zutara had been destined to be canon, it would have continued to build on this foundation. They would have grown closer, learned more about each other, dealt with these underlying feelings of attraction until finally, both admit there’s something more than friendship.

With Kataang, all we got was a temperamental twelve year old planting kisses on his friend/mother figure and then suddenly, she reciprocates those feelings. Why? Because he’s the “hero” and I guess the hero “deserves” the girl.

Because she’s totally an object who can’t make her own decisions. At least according to Bryke.

Just want to add that some people say that Katara doesn’t even care about Aang. The fuck? She cares about him deeply and always looks out for him. Well, she acts more like a mother than a lover and I agree with that, but to say that she doesn’t love him, is wrong.

I’m not sure if you’re calling me out on saying this because I know I haven’t. I know Katara cared about Aang. I know she was very close to him and loved him. But like you said, that love was motherly in nature. Again, I never said she doesn’t love him. She did- but the love wasn’t the right kind and when it turned into something romantic it came off very forced.

One final thing, and this is Bryke’s fault but… in TSR episode, we catch the first glimpse of the image of Katara that Aang has in his head. He has her on this pedestal of perfection (first crush… makes perfect sense) but as soon as she differs from his view, she’s “wrong.”

This grows leagues worse in the comics. Suddenly, Katara isn’t Katara anymore. Bryke literally had to turn her into a Mary Sue with no opinions and no fight and no spark to get her to fit Aang’s mold and be a good match for him.

If you have to completely alter a character’s nature to be in a relationship with another character, it’s not a good relationship.

hekitumbles replied to your post “silver-arrows replied to your post “Iain at the end, ‘No.’ He knows…”

Honestly everything you’re saying is like BIG MOOD. I had to quit aos at the same time for the same reasons and I lived for fitzmack. The way Mack would actually try to understand Fitz when everyone else wrote him off was just. It was perfect.

mack took fitz as he was. everyone was looking at fitz from before he had brain damage, and trying to make him the same as he was before (and i could write you an essay on them just magically “fixing” his disability with a handwave but that’s another rant).

and that’s not to mention that whoooole hallucination scene with fitz calling mack hot, that’s canon!! that’s canon!!! you can’t take that away from me!! and just, them spending time together and getting closer and then suddenly simmons is back and fitz and mack just like….don’t talk anymore? their friendship? gone?

regardless of what shipping dreams i may have, to erase their friendship did such a disservice to both their characters.

i could go on, but i should either keep working on the ash/lorca fic i’m writing instead of hand of metal and wheels oR GO TO SLEEP IT’S 3AM

but imagine hermione and draco having an epic rivalry over their grades. draco interrupting hermione’s constant hand-raising by loudly giving the answer before she can open her mouth. hermione stealing all the books on the topic they’re covering from the library. the two of them studying at nearby tables late at night and waiting to see who will break and get up to go to bed first, and they’re both so damn stubborn they end up just falling asleep over their parchment. both of them slaving away over their essays and stressing over getting every detail perfect because ‘there’s no way i’m letting them one-up me again DIS FOOL IS GOING DOWN’. eventually they both resort to sabotaging each other to get ahead- draco starts this first obviously, but hermione eventually joins in just to even out the playing board (and because deep down there’s a part of her that’s really a vindictive queen bc come on who the heck doesn’t love getting revenge). draco slips a powder in hermione’s inkwell that makes it turn invisible the day after it’s put on paper, hermione makes draco’s bubotuber plant explode all over him in herbology, they both continually flick subtle spells at each other’s assignments in transfiguration (i swear it wasn’t me who gave my apple a duck’s bill! *glare*) then one day in potions when they’re stuck at a table together and are exchanging snarky comments about how poorly the other person is doing, hermione says something about how getting draco to screw up isn’t even a challenge and he scoffs and rolls his eyes and says ‘i’d like to see you try.’ and hermione just smirks and kisses him right on the cheek and draco’s so rattled he forgets to stir his potion clockwise six times and it starts smoking and turns dark grey and slughorn tut-tuts at him disappointedly while hermione smiles smugly. and then all of a sudden it’s a game of who can make the other person more flustered and they’re flirting and touching and cheek-pecking left and right until one day someone just groans in exasperation and says ‘for merlin’s bloody sake, just kiss already!’ which draco promptly does two seconds later. after, when hermione pulls away, the whole class is cheering and she’s blushing like crazy and she asks if draco’s gone insane, because at the moment she really believes he has, but he just puts on this devious cheshire cat grin that’s so reminiscent of the weasley twins it makes her actually reach for her wand and goes ‘nope. i’m getting revenge.’ and then proceeds to point to hermione’s potion, which is boiling over. she slaps him. (they both end up dating anyway ofc) (cause they’re really in love) (and after that kiss i mean it doesn’t take long for them to figure out ‘holy crap i enjoyed that and i think they did too we bloody like each other’)

Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me When I Was Entering University

From youtuber PaddySnuffles

These are based on my personal experience (and that of people I know directly).

 1. Once you have the necessary basic courses done, take the harder courses within your first two years if possible - if you’re applying to grad school they’ll usually look at only the grades of the last two years. (In Canada, anyways - don’t take my word on that for other countries!)

2.If your university has multiple campuses, don’t assume courses are transferable just because the campus is part of the same university.

 5. Always save screenshots of any and all payments you make online, regardless of whether you get an email receipt.

 8. Use resources available to you for help.

Dammit.”

I’m-.. I’m utterly flabbergasted. I haven’t checked my followers count in a while and so you could imagine my utter disbelief when I saw that I’ve passed the 10 thousand followers mark. So basically I just sat staring at the sceen for about a full minute trying to process all of this… I never expected this when I joined Tumblr a little while ago and every time I look at my followers count and see that I’ve gained a new followers my heart still does a little leap inside my chest and so this is just unbelievable to me.

This is a thank you to all of my followers and mutuals. Every single one of you.

Sappy love-letter ahead (you have been warned!):

Definitive Ranking of Book 4 Episodes, #10/13

10. 4x07 “Reunion”

Varrick and Bolin transport Chewie to Cell Block 1138. Opal’s not cool enough to get sushi. Wu’s in laundry. Korra and Asami don’t listen to Mako for an entire episode.

I love going back and picking apart media, neurotically analyzing every moment, and whatnot. But I think there’s sometimes we should step back and try to appreciate just how exhilarating a story can be to experience the first time. I remember feeling so on-edge during the first six weeks of Book 4 because I was desperate for Korra to be back around everyone. It’s not like those episodes really drag when you think about it, but waiting a month and a half, especially when experiencing first time Shipper Feels…

And holy crap this episode delivered. I don’t want to make it all about Korrasami because I do think that’s a disservice to a lot of the other truly great aspects, but like…I was walking around grinning for a week because of the “snazzy” line, you know? Hell, in my posts from back then, you can feel me trying to restrain my enthusiasm because I was so scared of being wrong and let down. Also I used to be a lot more formal for some reason. Everything changed when I began analyzing Asami’s clips.

What Is Hip Hop? Part 3

Grandmaster Flash, a Hip Hop pioneer who invented many of the techniques DJs use today.

Our view of Hip Hop is flawed and we need to reinvent our culture. And that starts by identifying what Hip Hop is to us. We need to decide our roles and decide if our values and intentions are pure, for the sake of the youth who are influenced by the actions we take. Hip Hop is no longer defined by four elements. It is twenty, fifty, a thousand elements. I have people ask me all the time if I make beats. Beat making has to be an element of Hip Hop. I know people who are photographers, dancers (not B-Boys), promoters, dudes who sell mixtapes at the mall, my friends who tell me everyday “you have to hear this new song.” These are the individuals who live Hip Hop everyday, and they outnumber The DJs, MCs, B-Boys and Graff Writers of the world.

So, with that being said, we still haven’t answered the question we set out to answer. Which is: What is Hip Hop?

Hip Hop is a jam. A jam that started in the South Bronx and has since taken over the entire world. It is a collective consciousness of millions of people all over the world, all locked in the sonic pleasure of a Hip Hop groove. For example, right now as we speak people all over the world are discovering the new J. Cole album. Think of how many people are all jamming to “January 28th” and how many have been amused by the line “the real is back. Flow bananas, here, peel this back…” Hip Hop is a beautiful phenomenon, that allows us to experience a feeling of joy in synchronicity. At any moment in time, somewhere in the world, someone is experiencing a song, or throwing up a tag, improvising a dance move or a freestyle rap, perfecting their mixes, copping some new gear… or reading this essay; and if you find yourself doing any of these things, even if you are by yourself, you are adding to the worldwide, never-ending jam - and if we can hold an idea in our heads while we do it, and if we can express it in our truest way, we can transcend ourselves and ascend to the level of a God. One love. Peace.

Haru in the supporting role

So we’ve all worried what it would be like for Makoto to sit in the stands and watch Haru in his hypothetical olympic glory with Rin. Makoto would, of course, be good at being the supporter. We know that.

But here we see Makoto being in the limelight for once. And guess what. Haru is a perfectly good supportive boyfriend to him as well! Brings the food, brings the kids… what a perfect wife seriously

Haru, like Makoto, deals with jealousy too. Unlike Makoto he’s fairly obvious, far too obvious. Not even making an effort to conceal it. Though I suppose he’s deliberately pissy and huffy around Kisumi so that Makoto realizes. I don’t think he will tell Makoto, no, instead Haru is relying on Makoto’s ability to read his thoughts and realize Haru is uncomfortable with Kisumi.

Kind of also makes you realize what an angel Makoto is for having hidden everything to himself. Maybe that’s because he’s not jealous of Rin or the Rin/Haru friendship (as Haru clearly is of Kisumi) but rather just of Rin’s ability to match Haru as a swimmer. Haru, however, has shown that he’s rather possessive of Makoto himself here, which I think is cute. He’s so used to being the one Makoto tells everything to, the only one who gets to monopolize Makoto’s time and attention… and that’s why he resents Kisumi. He even ignores Kisumi’s attempts at friendship with him, his priority is to just keep him away from Makoto. I could literally go on writing essays about this episode but I will end with this:

THANK YOU KYOANI, this is JUST what we needed, this is perfect. Jealousy and possessiveness from Haru’s side, Haru’s obvious discomfort at Makoto distancing himself and going his separate way… seems like Makoto has accepted that they will have to drift apart but Haru clearly hasn’t. It’ll be nice to see how it all builds up and finally explodes (hopefully in a fight with tears and then hugs yay)

Also Kisumi you are #4 right now on my list of favorite Free! boys I effing love you so much (1 is Makoto, 2 is Rin, 3 is Haru)

…and that’s the last random thing I write tonight, sorry for spamming!

Planning doesn't always work

A/N: In which James attempts the perfect proposal.

Things never went as planned for James Potter. From the outside it looked like everything went perfect for him. At school he had been popular, charming, good looking. And now he was out in the big bad world absolutely in love with his girlfriend, fighting for what he believed in.

But it was the little things that didn’t go his way. Like one time he planned to ‘woo’ Lily and long story short, he ended up with a broken arm. Another time he had planned a prank with Sirius but it ended up back firing. There was the time he did all his homework for McGonagall, writing a very long essay, only to find he had done it on the wrong topic.

But this time, this time James Potter was determined that things would go his way. This time was important. With that in mind he had everything ready. He was going to ask Lily to marry him. So far Sirius was the only one who knew, James being a tad too nervous to tell anyone else. He had every detail planned, even the tiniest thing. And the day to propose was Saturday. Today was Friday.

It was nearing half eleven at night and they were lying on the couch, watching some muggle movie Lily loved. James was draped across it, leaning against the armrest with Lily lying against him, her head at his chest, their feet tangled together. James was playing with the fingers on one of her hands, not really paying attention to the movie, talking to her every now and then. If James had been paying more attention to the movie he might have noticed it was about marriage. The couple in the movie were very like James and Lily. They had overcome many obstacles and were deeply in love, the boy fighting in World War Two. The man died while out fighting and the woman was left behind, never even having the chance to marry the love of her life. Neither of them ever found out how exactly the movie ended.
James was still watching Lily, when she turned towards him suddenly. He just had time to raise his eyebrows before words shot out of her mouth.

“Marry me,” she blurted. “I know we’re only nineteen and that’s way too young to be married. I don’t want to die during this war without having married you first.” James felt his mouth open and close like a fish. “I get if you think we’re too young or I’m being stupid,” she continued, “But I love you. So much. So I had to ask because I want to marry you, even if there wasn’t a war I’d want to marry you-”
“No,” James interrupted, coming to his senses. Lily’s face dropped and she opened her mouth to speak again. “No no no no no, not like that,” he said quickly, cupping her face in his hands. “Of course I’ll marry you. I’d marry you today if I could. Look,” he said, sitting up so he could pull something out of his pocket. It was a little black box he had become accustomed to carrying around. He opened it carefully, watching Lily as she gasped. Inside was a beautiful ring with a thin gold back and a diamond that James knew wouldn’t upset Lily because it was too big. “The reason I was saying no is because I had everything planned. I even had a speech planned.” he smiled, slightly embarrassed at her. “You only had to wait until tomorrow.” And then he was tackled into a hug, causing him to be back lying down, Lily on top of him.

“Yes,” Lily muttered into his chest, tears in her voice. “Of course I’ll marry you.”
Although he hadn’t asked exactly, and it certainly hadn’t been as planned, James felt a grin split his face in two.
“Your left hand, Evans?” James said. Lily sat up into James lap and he sat up as well, taking her left and and kissing her ring finger before slipping the ring on.
“I love you,” they both said at the same time as their lips connected.
