Australia’s oldest man, Alfred ‘Alfie’ Date, likes to knit mini sweaters for injured penguins

When the Victoria’s Phillip Island Penguin Foundation reached out to Date in 2013 to assist the survival of little penguins after an oil spill, it was a request he could not refuse. The experienced knitter put his 80 years of skill to use.

The foundation says this “is not a fashion statement” but instead they help the little creatures if they are affected by an oil spill. Oil can make their feathers stick together, allowing water to get to their inner layers. This causes the little penguins to get cold and not be able to hunt due to heaviness.

Some things Pens fans can thank Eddie Johnston for
  • 232 career wins as a Penguins coach
  • GM during the 1984 draft, drafted Lemieux
  • As the Penguins GM, he traded for Paul Coffey and Kevin Stevens, guys who helped the Penguins win their first two Cups.
  • As the Whalers GM, he traded Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson to the Penguins, the worst trade in Whalers history. Ulf and Francis went on to be two of the best players in Penguins history and were a big part of the first two Cups.
  • Assistant GM from 1998-2006, the years where we acquired a lot of the guys who helped us win a Cup in 2009, and some of which are still on the team now.
  • 25 years of service to the Penguins organization as coach, GM, assistant GM, and Senior Adviser to Hockey Operations
  • HE INTRODUCED FRED SHERO TO HIS FUTURE WIFE MARIETTE. HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RAY SHERO’S EXISTENCE. HE WAS HELPING THE PENGUINS BEFORE THE PENGUINS EXISTED.
