the path before us

The future: a dark, desolate world. A world of war, suffering, loss on both sides. Mutants, and the humans who dared to help them, fighting an enemy we cannot defeat. Are we destined down this path, destined to destroy ourselves like so many species before us? Or can we evolve fast enough to change ourselves… change our fate? Is the future truly set?

“If I die, I am going to haunt your ass,” I smirked at Elijah, who was caring my weak body trough the dark forest, which was now more quiet then ever.

“This is not the right time for jokes,” he looked down at me with concerned look before looking back at the path in front of us.

God Is For You (And What That Means)

Today’s world is one of constant support. We wear t-shirts with the name brand we like best and proudly boast jerseys with the name of our favorite players. We put bumper stickers on our car that display our political affiliation and can easily share it on Facebook or Instagram whenever we go out to eat at a restaurant or to exercise in the gym.  Yes, we live in a world where we are constantly supporting some cause or brand, so why is it is so hard for us to understand that God is for us.

Now we need to be careful with this. This statement, which people will tout with verses like Romans 8:31 that says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” but we miss the context of those verses. Paul, who wrote the letter to the Romans, was talking about God being for us in the context of His mercy and grace. He wasn’t talking about your relationship with your boyfriend working out or you passing all you college exams. However, in the context of eternal life and salvation, these seem like small things. We can take comfort in knowing that whatever hardships we face (and Paul lists some big examples such as persecution and famine), God does not withhold his forgiveness from us based on our circumstances.

So imagine next time your struggling with temptation, or when your wondering if you’ve done the right thing, that God is next to you, tweeting His support for you, tagging you in photos saying, “This person right here, there with me.” And even though we may get tempted by sin, or fall on hard times, we are still conquerors because the blood of Christ has redeemed us.

Take for example a woman named Rahab. In Joshua 2, she hides some Israelite spies who are trying to infiltrate Jericho. Rahab was a prostitute. She had lived a life that that was not honorable to God among a people who did not believe in the God of the Bible. Yet, Rahab saves the spies, hides them in her home, and when the Israelites later take over the city, they spare her. She later goes on to become an ancestor of Jesus. Do you see how amazing that is? God didn’t look at her and call her worthless. Despite her history and background, God was for her. Her faith in God was all that was required to save her from dire circumstances.

God’s support is not support for our sin. We can’t go on living a sinful life knowing His great love for us. Additionally, God’s support is not support of whatever we want in life. I am sure that when the walls were falling around Jericho, Rahab must have wondered if she had made a mistake trusting God’s plan. But as Paul says in Hebrews 11:40, “God had planned something better for us” and we can have confidence in His plan.

So what are you struggling with? Finances? A relationship? Something that feels like it will destroy everything you’ve worked so hard for? Know that this might happen (although I pray it doesn’t). But when we feel frustrated with the path set before us, we can trust that the route we walk ends with eternal life in Heaven with Jesus. God is for us, and knowing that, who can ever stop us?

Words for a Weekend - Quantico Chapter 8

Dear everyone who asked - this has been a really loong time coming and I’m sorry for that! I debated for an age whether to do one long ending post or to subdivide into the end of Saturday and Sunday as the finale. In the end it divides best here. I have Sunday mostly written and am very excited and hopeful you will enjoy the ending and will try to get it up by the end of the week. This is a shorter chapter. But I like how it came out… I hope you will too.

Saturday Afternoon

Scully wakes, confused but comfortable, in a room with white curtains, afternoon sun and a sea-scented breeze. She can hear the nearby ocean roaring, and while her current prone position hides it from her gaze, she’s not complaining about the view.

Through an open french window she can see Mulder, bare to the waist, with his skinny ankles poking out from plaid flannel pants that look childhood soft and are at least four inches too short. He’s looking seawards, his shoulders sloping and relaxed and the sun is catching gold flecks in his hair that glimmer like his eyes did when he pulled her and the blanket close at 6am and kissed her to sleep. Scully stretches extravagantly in the crisp sheets and, slipping on his shirt, pads over. She is pleased when he doesn’t hear her, too lost in his own private world to expect her arrival until she announces it by running her hands over the warm relief of his abdomen and stepping in to press her lips to his shoulder blade. Wordlessly he invites her into his happy place, spinning her in front of him to look out over the water, and she melts into the space between his body and his arms, fitting and filling a vacuum that could have been created to her exact measurements. For a few moments there is silence, stillness in the face of the endless, immense battle between land and sea ahead of them, and neither of them thinks about how easily their battle ended, how giving into one another feels somehow like a victory rather than a concession.

Even on the edge of paradise though, reality has a habit of creeping in, and as Mulder’s fingers hover possessively in the grooves of her ribs, Scully can’t help but wonder what this means beyond the present. Downstairs in a still unopened bag, the weighty tomes of her future lie unread, the unpaid balance of the last gamble she took. Her training at the FBI is barely underway and yet here she is, leveraging a precious free weekend against another unknown, investing in another instinctive choice.

She’s not aware of her shoulders stiffening, or the way she is chewing her lip until Mulder softly says.

Scully turns in towards him, her eyebrow already forming the question she hasn’t yet worked out how to verbalise and he doesn’t hesitate to caress her cheek, to reconnect them while he begs her,

‘Don’t think yet. Not today. You’re a brilliant scientist and I’m a conspiracy obsessed psychologist. We can both reason our way out of anything… but I don’t want to. Not yet. Be unreasonable with me. Just until tomorrow.’

The Divine Liturgy is a bethrothal to Christ, it is a wedding. It places us in His Kingdom.

Later, we will go out again, we will go back to our house with our passions, with our sins, and with our miseries.

It doesn’t matter. Again we will go to Liturgy, and again we will seize Christ, He will deify us again. And thus, with continuous struggle, with a continuous path, with the Priest before us and we behind, we will reach the Kingdom of Heaven.

Do we go to the Liturgy with this desire? We obtain the Kingdom of the Heavens.

9x05 “Dog Dean Afternoon”
On Diseases and Cures

Posted as part of the Series “Of Blood, Bone and Darkness”:
A Carver Era Rewatch Hiatus Meta-Series

In the previous post in the series (see here) I already started talking about how this episode in some ways referenced the story of “Breaking Bad” and Walter White with Chef Leo’s story. But there isn’t just a similarity to be seen between these two fictional characters and their descent and turn into villain, Chef Leo’s story also imo can be read and analyzed in relation and parallel to Dean’s descent in S9 linked to the Mark of Cain.

“See, when I was diagnosed, I was way past standard treatment. No one could save me. But then with the help of a Pawnee shaman and a zoo membership, I found a cure, albeit a temporary one. Cancer always came back. […] Well, what can I say? Combination therapy works. I felt stronger, and the effects lasted longer.”

This entire quote of Chef Leo imo can be translated to Dean’s struggle very much as well, especially as the show framed Dean’s MoC situtation as both a disease, but also an addiction. Whereas Chef Leo was diagnosed with cancer and couldn’t be helped anymore and therefore started to look elsewhere for treatment and eventually was forced to kill to remain healthy and while doing that became the villain, Dean similarly lost any kind of stability after the fallout with his brother. And in trying to do penance and feel like his life mattered he took on the mark and the mark provided a cure for a multitude of things Dean struggled with massively prior. For one the mark provided “calm”, but also as a disease and addiction forced Dean to kill more to keep up with feeling better and with that feeding the mark with bloodshed and ultimately strengthen its control over Dean.

Neither Chef Leo nor Dean had planned or wanted to kill anyone (in fact, Dean very much only took on the mark to save people from Abaddon), yet in the end people became collateral damage so they could remain cancer - or in Dean’s case - pain free. But of course it was just a matter of time before that lead them down darker paths. The more Chef Leo used his “combination therapy” the stronger he felt, similarly the more Dean killed or otherwise fed the mark and held the blade, the more dependent on it he became. It’s a vicious cycle. And eventually as Chef Leo said they became the predator. On top of that in relation to the MoC and the blade as a drug or addiction, Sam finding lots of prescription drugs like methadone and oxycodone in Chef Leo’s office feels further comparable to Dean, whose entire Mark of Cain storyline and especially his time as a demon Jensen himself spoke of in comparison to Dean being a heroin addict.

And last but not least of course the aspect about Chef Leo saying that a) he “was past saving” is repeated by Dean himself multiple times later on throughout Carver Era (the most memorable one being the one as giffed above when confronting Cole) and b) that the cancer always came back and that it was only a temporary fix, but no true cure is comparable to how the sanctified blood cure Sam worked on Dean was just a temporary fix, but not truly a cure from the mark either. In this regard it is also interesting to mention that Chef Leo wants to consume Sam for his healing powers, which of course were due to Gadreel. And that, ladies and gentleman, marks one of the moments where the “angel grace as the antidote against the MoC”-theory originated for me.

We would commiserate with each other about how high school felt like a farce, like a four-year-long audition, and then we would go on to attend Ivies and top state universities and small liberal arts colleges and we would eventually switch our majors to something safe, like economics or computer science. And we would rebel, sure; we would dance on tabletops and kiss the wrong person and backpack through Europe, but inevitably, the intoxicating allure of the corporate world and all of its comforts would yank us back to the paths drawn for us before we were born. And by age thirty, we would make six-figures annually; we would have a mortgage, two-point-one kids, and a nice house in a nice neighborhood, and we would have grown into the boring-ass adults we swore we’d never be.

↳ I’ve realized that even though we must learn from those who came before us, we must also forge our own path. So that is why I’ve decided to keep the portals open. Humans can now physically enter the Spirit World, and spirits will be free to roam our world. I will no longer be the bridge. Humans and spirits must learn to live together. My mission will always be to use Raava’s light spirit to guide the world towards light and balance. Harmonic Convergence has caused a shift in the planet’s energy. I can feel it. Things will never be the same again. We are entering a new age.

30 Day Writing Challenge - Day 26

Day 26: Getting Married Proposing

Summary: Sherlock tries to give you a magical and romantic night before he proposes to you
Author: Maddy (@laterthantherabbit)
Words: 1500
Characters/Relationships: Sherlock x reader
Warnings: None

Author’s Notes: I decided to change this to a proposal, which is a step to getting married anyway, I suppose. Oh well, I just wanted to write for a proposal instead and I am super happy with this. I really enjoyed writing this and I can’t wait for you all to read it!!

It was unusual to say the least. Sherlock had suggested to actually going out somewhere to eat together. Not just you but him as well. He was sitting across from you at that moment in Angelo’s eating a helping, though a small one at that, of lasagna with a side of salad whilst you had the fettuccini alfredo, a bottle of wine being shared between the two of you. He was talking animatedly about his latest case, which was normal in any other circumstance however his last case was over a week ago and you knew that it had already been sorted and stored in his Mind Palace the day it had been finished. There was no need for him to be talking to you about it now, a fact that he had confirmed only a few months ago when you asked him to go over a case with you that was over two weeks old.

Part One: Jedi Temple, Coruscant, 32 BBY

He had lived.

Had the molten red blade been one iota to the left, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn knew that it most certainly would have killed him. He’d spoken fervently with Obi-Wan, after his padawan had dispatched the Sith Lord, begging him to care for Anakin, to train him. Wrung a promise from the distraught man’s lips. He thought he was going to die.

But he had lived.
