You Can't Escape, You Know

Chapter 1 of Technical Difficulties.

My brain has been full of computer Jenova vibes today. I needed them out.
Title taken from the soundtrack of the first “Portal” game, which was the background music for writing.

Warning, there’s panic attacks and self-mutilation going on!

You can also read this oneshot on AO3!

It was their first mistake, the first of many. The one mistake they made, and then just kept making, over and over.

U n d e r e s t i m a t e.

When they find her she is safely trapped inside a mummified, dead body, preserved and crystallized. She is old, so very old, a relic of a time long before any of them came to be.

They see. And they assume.

They do not know.

I Think Cyberpunk Shouldn’t Explain It’s Backstory

One of the important things about Cyberpunk stories, at least to me, is the constant feeling that it is the inevitable result of our civilization.

But when it starts explaining the setting’s history, specially  in RPGs, it breaks the spell. The authors start adding convoluted events and out-of-nowhere catastrophes just to justify specific elements in the story.

There’s always that war that caused that country’s separation, or the epidemic that caused this panic, or the computer virus that led to technology X. It’s stops being about our future/exaggerated-present and feels like just a distant alternate earth.

Show me a f**ked up civilization and tell me they got to this point just by boiling the frog slowly enough.

So I was determined to get through both Virus and Trip’s route so I could do ALL of the character routes. But I didn’t like their routes at all, and I even had a minor panic attack when Virus locked Aoba in that box for three days. Since then, I can’t even look at the two without feeling a uncomfortable. I haven’t finished either of their routes.

The government’s response to the AIDS crisis was infamously terrible. Former President Bush, Sr. once “responded to a reporter’s question on HIV research with the insipid comment that most people don’t approve of ‘that lifestyle,’ implying that funding HIV research wasn’t a priority,” recalls Peter. It could be worse: Reagan’s White House press secretary Larry Speakes once mockingly implied that another reporter who pressed the issue must be gay himself, to even care.

That kind of allergy to action is despicable, but at least they weren’t campaigning for concentration camps, like California’s Proposition 64, sponsored by the Prevent AIDS Now Initiative Committee. Yes, they actually called themselves “PANIC,” presumably because “Early Virus Identification and Liquidation” was taken. PANIC insisted that all they wanted to do was add AIDS to the CDC’s list of communicable diseases, but public health authorities warned that PANIC was downplaying the consequences of this, including mandatory testing and mass quarantine.

5 Dark Realities Of Living Through The 1980s AIDS Crisis

That fall we were at a dinner party when the subject of vaccines came up for what felt like the millionth time. I asked the parents at the table how thy went about making decisions about concerning their children´s health. Did they talk to their pediatricians? Other parents? Were they reading books? Poking around online? One friend a forty-one-year-old first-time father, said there was much conflicting information out there he hadn´t known what to do. In the end, he said. he and his wife decided to delay some shots, including MMR vaccine, which he´d heard was particularly dangerous……
At the time I had no idea what the evidence supported. Still, I cringed when my friend said he´s made his decision based on what he felt rather than by trying to assess the balance of the available evidence. Anecdotes and suppositions, no matter how right they feel, don´t lead to universal truths, experiments that can be independently confirmed by impartial observers do. Intuition leads to the flat earth society and bloodletting, experiments lead to men on the moon and microsurgery.

Hundreds of thousands of eyes are on the auditorium as the Bethesda press conference begins. The opening bars of The Ink Spots’ I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire play out over the darkened hall. “War… war never changes,” croaks Ron Perlman grimly. The audience are slavering. The word “Fallout” fades in on the large screen at the back of the stage. The people cheer. But the “4″ never arrives. The cheering stops dead, and a colon appears.

“Bro”

Oh no.

“the”

Dear God, no.

“rhood”.

One man stands, shrieks; a savage, animalistic sound.

“of Steel 2″.

Panic spreads like a virus throughout the bodies gathered in the conference. Chairs are heaved up from the floor and become makeshift bludgeons. Some members of the gaming press forego weaponry, choosing instead to simply beat each other with their fists. The room inexplicably catches fire. Jeff Gerstmann, stood at the back of the auditorum, can only put his head in his hands and weep quietly.

“Coming 2016.”

In order to understand why this is true, it’s important to keep in mind the role randomness plays in all areas of life. For example: Both of the boys who lived on my block and were in my school year when I was growing up were named Seth. This does not mean that one hundred percent of the male population is named Seth, or that one hundred percent of the population in my grade in school were named Seth, or even that boys who lived in my town and were in my grade were at an elevated risk for being named Seth. This demonstrates one of the major hurdles in proving causality: In order to demonstrate that the apparent “Seth cluster” on my block was not just the result of random noise, you’d need to explain how and why it occurred and not simply demonstrate that it had occurred.
