the outlier

So I was thinking about music earlier in a Earth is Space Austraila/Humans Are Space Orcs kind of way

  • Humans have a way of singing that if you are not careful can permanently damage your vocal cords
  • Humans are incredible mimics
  • Whenever we hear “This song can’t be sung by humans” we Immediately go “lol” and do it anyway
  • Humans have a wide variety in which they can pitch their voices naturally, Freddie Mercury being a shining example of this (even though he is an outlier)
    • Likewise some people’s voices are naturally super high pitched or super fucking deep, there’s a lot of factors in human vocals

Which got me thinking about how varied music would be in some Galactic Federation type of thing. How interpersonal relationships may be affected by a human hearing a song that is from a species that maybe descended from birds and a human is dancing and singing in the breakroom to some Avian Boy Band just nailing the lyrics.

A alien crewmate walking in to find that one of their human crewmates are trying extremely hard to sing this song that, as far as anyone could tell, isn’t possible for them to do but What would you Know they’re getting better and better and might just be able to Do It

People who are singers have to have amazing breath control because of famously long notes in various songs and are able hold them and keep on going where as a human who doesn’t have that same kind of practice or an alien that just might not be able to do it it would be really impressed at this.

idk man just, intergalactic music

The Magicians is a show where you can have a favorite and least favorite of the main cast but none of the main characters are inherently unlikeable so you’re just stuck caring about the mental and physical wellbeing of an entire cast and it’s very stressful because all of their lives suck and they’re assholes but they deserve to be happy god dammit

“Average person screams 3 times per day” factoid actually just statistical error. average person screams 0 times per day. Refurb, who screams over 10,000 times each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted

Things that I think some people forget are canon in the IDW universe, or think are just fanon
  • The usage of “frag”, “slag”, and “scrap” as cuss words
  • Lovers (conjunx endurae) being called “sparkmates”
  • Queer-platonic relationships (amica endurae)
  • While Megatron and Optimus are seen as very old, they are not. Megatron is five million years old, and OP stated that Megatron is a little older than him. Bots older than them include but are certainly not limited to: Rung, Whirl, Ironhide, Kup, Ratchet, Cyclonus, Tailgate, Rewind, Red Alert and Minimus Ambus/Ultra Magnus
  • Starscream was a representative in the Senate
  • Camiens laud those who have carried the Matrix as gods; they would view Rodimus just as they do Optimus
  • Young Cybertronians being called “sparklings”
  • Rodimus spent three days trying to program his holomatter avatar to have a sweatband
  • Before becoming Optimus Prime, Orion Pax was close friends with Megatron. He read and quoted Megatron’s Towards Peace and was even unsure if he was on “the right side”
  • Whirl likes French films
  • Rodimus is 4.2 million years old - only 800k years younger than Megatron
  • Mecha from Caminus have different spark frequencies than that of normal Cybertronians, causing their energon to be blue rather than pink
  • Megatron and Impactor worked together in the mines and were best friends
  • Cyclonus was on the Ark-1
  • Alcoholic beverages (engex)
  • Rodimus, Whirl, Skids, Swerve, Tailgate, and Ultra Magnus have all customized their holomatter avatars
  • Soundwave and Drift both grew up in the gutters of Rodion and were taken in by Megatron
  • There’s a mech on the Lost Light named Toaster, who turns into a toaster
  • Whirl was alt-mode exempt and a watchmaker of sorts. After the Empurata procedure, he changed his name (Whirl was not his original name), frame, and started hanging out in Rodion’s gutters, where Drift and Soundwave lived. He then became a prison guard and beat up Megatron, causing the latter to be pushed over the edge and start the war
  • Nautica is the exact picture of Pipes’ Dream Conjunx, but he died before getting the chance to meet her
  • Rodimus, formerly Hot Rod, grew up in the streets of Nyon and took care of other homeless people, and was approached directly by Megatron, who was hoping to recruit
  • Before becoming Rodimus, Hot Rod was about Rung’s size
  • Certain Decepticons in high standing with Megatron had special ceremonies performed by one of the Warriors Elite or Megatron himself in which the chosen Decepticon would have a piece of their spark casing removed and forged into their Badge
  • On both sides of the war, some mecha had real, physical badges, while others were simply painted on
  • Megatron is a forged spark in a cold-constructed body
  • Shockwave was a senator, and ran an academy for outliers (which Skids, Trailbreaker/Trailcutter, and Damus/Glitch, who would later become Tarn). He and Orion Pax (who was later to become Optimus Prime) were close friends
  • Mecha saying “I could hug you!”
  • Drift is filthy rich for a reason undisclosed
  • Rodimus and Swerve are both religious, just not obnoxiously so
  • Orion Pax had his insides rearranged by Shockwave’s techs to make a hole in his chassis - unbeknownst to him, Shockwave was doing this to MANY mechs to make it possible for them to carry the Matrix of Leadership. Had it not been for the hole created by Shockwave, Orion Pax would have never been able to become Optimus Prime
  • Even then, it hurt Orion Pax when the Matrix bonded with him and made him into Optimus Prime - when the Matrix bonded with Hot Rod and made him into Rodimus Prime, it felt good and right
  • Even by Cybertronian standards, Prowl is considered “heavy”
  • Chromedome was still able to lift him over his head and throw him off a cliff
  • Rodimus (Hot Rod at the time) broke into Styx, one of the most high-security Decepticon-owned prisons to ever exist, to break out Dealer, a former member of his unit (who then promptly betrayed him)
  • Chromedome and Brainstorm worked for The Institute, which was responsible for mind-wiping, Shadowplay, and Empurata
  • Drift joined the Decepticons at the very beginning of the war and only became an Autobot near the tail end of the war, less than a century before its close (He became an Autobot after meeting Wing, and then pretty quickly became a Wrecker and went to Earth in a time period likely to be the 80s or 90s). For nearly all of the 4 million years the war went on, he was Deadlock, amongst the most horrifying Decepticons out there, and was favored by Megatron enough that the warlord sent his most notorious bounty hunter out to go find him even after Deadlock had betrayed his superior officer’s orders and went rogue
  • Megatron never got an Autobot badge of his own; he still wears Bumblebee’s

Feel free to add your own!

Fort Briggs memes
  • “Oh, I dunno, BEARS?”
  • [holds up an inanimate object] “Is THIS a Drachman spy?”
  • [talking about Olivier] “That’s why her hair is so big, it’s…full of secrets
  • “what the fuck is a summer”
  • “Ahh, I’m so thirsty!” [tilts cup to take a sip. several ice cubes spill out]
  • [a very tiny animal/insect appears] “GET THE TANK”
  • “Let’s ask Major Miles!” [soldiers turn to a pineapple with glasses on it]
  • “statistics show that on average, every briggs soldier owns at least 2 ugly shirts. neil, who owns approximately 12,047 ugly shirts, is an outlier and should not have been counted”
  • [picture of soldiers doing something really stupid, like planking or hanging upside down from the ceiling] “this is the briggs way”
  • snow/ice puns EVERYWHERE

“average writer publishes about 1 book a decade” factoid actualy just statistical error. average writer publishes several books per decade. Westeros Georg, who lives in a new mexico and only publishes when the stars are aligned , is an outlier adn should not have been counted

“average person must have his wealth seized and redistributed to the people” factoid actually just statistical error. average person must have little to none of their wealth seized and redistributed. john c. miller, who is the CEO and President of the Denny’s corporation and a capitalist running dog, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

more langst prompts my dudes, more overused stuff

-shiro is missing. everyone is devastated. allura tries getting Lance to move lions, but blue raises her particle barrier and doesnt let Lance out. lance gives blue permission to put him into a cyro-frozen sleep state for however long he needs to be, just so blue wont be taken from him like his family

-keith gets to be the black paladin. lance gets dissed and doesnt get any credit for anything he does, while keith gets all the attention now. lance ends up angry kissing keith while crying, sobbing out his fears and insecurites while keith hisses out apologies and kisses his cheeks.

-lance runs from the castle after some incident with allura yelling at him in a fit of rage. he ends up at the balmera somehow, and he is given comfort and love from the balmera and it’s inhabitants while no one on the castle notices him missing. they realize after a day or two. then they go looking for him. (he doesn’t want to go back, not really)

-lance suddenly realizes how useless he is in regards to how everyone reacts with each other, he’s just the outlier that makes everyone roll their eyes and groan whenever he so much as speaks. he ends up sobbing his heart out in his room, not quite noticing that his comm is on. (coran and hunk get to him first. then pidge does. shiro and keith are busy training.)

-blue starts learning to speak in spanish for him. he starts crying because he’s so so homesick and blue is actually making an effort to cheer him up (because no one else would).

-coran marks some points on the star map that lance was looking at. lance and coran bond over the stars and memories of their homes. allura eventually joins them, and lance and the princess bond over their families and rain.

-lance turns out to be faintly altean. coran and allura are overjoyed. lance doesn’t want another family.

-Lotor ends up legitimately falling in love with lance after he manipulated lance. after the paladins rescue lance, lotor ultimately turns to the reasoning of, ‘if I can’t have him, no one can’. lance is then either recaptured or killed.

“Americans are so self-centered and don’t know anything about anyone else’s politics/history”

I hope this isn't rude, but I'm following a LOT of witch blogs. you being one of them. yet, when I look at the witch-related asks & answers for all of those blogs, other blogs are helpful and list spells and such. you just "no" whenever someone asks? Can I ask why you reject magic for a lot of your situations, considering you run a magic blog and are quite literally a creator of a magical how-to book?

simply because magic is not needed in every situation, nor is it advisable. recognizing when magic is and isn’t needed, or even a good idea is important in the life of the witch.

here are a couple of examples of such:

things i have answered “no” to today:

  • bewitching your significant other (consent issues anyone?)
  • bewitching a non-signif to find out personal things (consent again)
  • asked for a spell for communicating with spirits (just because a skill isn’t developed doesn’t mean a spell will replace experience)
  • weight loss spells (dangerous and against my personal morals)

however, the one outlier i include is this, because it’s important:

  • easily google-able question (as stated in previous posts, i encourage people to develop their own research skills so they can grow in their craft when they reach an area of their path where there isn’t someone around to hold their hand and slip them the answers)

as for your “other blogs are helpful and list spells and such”, i’d like to direct your attention to the many posts of lists and ~stuff~ i make for people. such as the:

Programmers are praising Styles’ new direction, as the song starts at No. 29 on the Pop Songs chart.

“Sign of the Times,” Harry Styles’ solo debut single apart from One Direction, has soared onto pop radio.

After three full days of availability, “Sign” (released at midnight ET Friday, April 7, on Columbia Records), launches at No. 29 on Billboard’s Pop Songs airplay chart dated April 22 (which encompasses plays on 167 U.S. mainstream top 40 stations, as measured by Nielsen Music, in the April 3-9 tracking week). It opens with nearly 2,000 detections at the format, translating to a pop radio audience of 16 million.

All charts will update tomorrow, April 11, on Billboard.com.

Programmers playing the song, which exudes a heaviness in both its rock-leaning sound and lyrics, say that even as it’s a departure from the gloss and tempo of much of today’s top 40, as well as 1D’s catalog, “Sign” is an obvious fit for the format. In fact, some say, it’s off to a good start in large part because of its distinctive feel.

“What a dynamic pivot. Mash The Beatles with Oasis and you’ve got Harry’s song,” says Kid Kelly, SiriusXM’s vp of music programming, which includes the pop-formatted Hits 1 channel. “Atypical? Perhaps. Forward-thinking? Absolutely. As far as the texture, outlier-styled songs have never frightened me, as it’s that uniqueness that I gravitate toward in hopes of providing maximum variety to our listeners.”

Phil Guerini, vp music strategy Disney Channels Worldwide and gm Radio Disney Networks, also asserts that “Sign of the Times” is atypical for the sound of many pop stations. “I not only think it can be a hit, but hope that it’s a massive one, in as much as it encourages other artists, labels and programmers to expand what is considered viable at mainstream radio today.”

Notably, Kelly, Guerini and other programmers played “Sign” in its original 5-minute, 40-second-long version Friday; “We’re all in or we’re not at all,” Kelly says. Columbia subsequently serviced a 4-minute, 8-second-long edit Saturday.

“There’s no question Harry wanted to make a statement and set himself apart from his past work,” says Chris Patyk, KEGY San Diego program director. Per that past, One Direction has tallied 13 Pop Songs entries, including three top 10s: its No. 3-peaking 2012 debut “What Makes You Beautiful”; “Story of My Life,” which hit No. 4 in 2014; and the No. 6 hit “Drag Me Down” in 2015. And, only one of those 13 songs started higher than the No. 29 bow for “Sign” (“Steal My Girl,” No. 27, 2014). “The response so far from our listeners is that they like ["Sign”] because it is different. A few weren’t One Direction fans to begin with and like the song.“ Looking ahead, Patyk says, "Ultimately, the listeners are our jury and, right now, there’s definite interest.”

“Sign” is a “great example of how music curators and music consumers don’t put boundaries on what a hit record is supposed to sound like,” muses Michael Martin, KMVQ San Francisco PD. “The only people putting music in lanes is the industry. Harry has come out of the solo gate with a rich, intricate and heartfelt smash. It’s bigger than any one format lane; it’s a cultural moment, which is what pop radio is supposed to capture.” - Billboard
