Does people really care about the fact that Dan was 18 when he met 22 year old Phil? I really don't get it. They could literally get married. Dan was legal age and it's just 4,5 years between them. I'm not sure if antiphannie was joking or not this is not against them, but I've seen this discussion several times and I don't understand why would someone get worked up about it. There is nothing wrong with it.
Look, you know I’m as big a fan as anyone of the fairytale that is Dan and Phil’s life and story and how they fell in love and how almost eight years together their lives still revolve around each other and only each other.
But when they met Phil was twenty two, and Dan was just turned eighteen. Phil was a celebrity, as far as the situation is concerned, and Dan was a fan. Dan was a teenager sending declarations of love and nudes to his favorite youtuber, and then said favorite youtuber invited him to come spend the weekend alone together in an empty house. The age dynamic plus the youtuber-fan relationship put Phil in a position of authority and Dan in a position ripe for being taken advantage of.
Which didn’t happen! Because Phil is a nice guy! And they were in love/falling in love! And we all know that! … now, at least. Because we have the power of hindsight. But I’m not going to pretend it wasn’t a dubious setup - in general - just because I know in this case it turned out well.
For the record, I’m not worked up about it. I just think it’s really important to understand that situations like this - not Dan and Phil specifically, but situations like this - are not about strict legal guidelines, they’re about human people who can be influenced and taken advantage of by people they look up to.
