the other caption was too long but it said reblog this basically so do it

Hello! It’s been a while since I’ve posted something like this… so bear with me! It was requested by an anon that’s entering a university as a Graphic Design major, so here are some supplies I recommend and why! (I may do a spoken and visual extended version as a video, so let me know what you guys think!)

(disclaimer: this is my opinion and I haven’t tried everything in the world, so if you have your own recommendations definitely reblog and say so in your caption! I’d love to check out your favorite supplies!)

if they had tumblr blogs, moomin edition:

lets do this shit

  • moomin: reblogs a lot of miscellaneous content, mostly a personal blog dedicated to talking about his life at the valley. reblogs a lot of gifs and relatable content, and by that i mean there are so many diverse ‘that feel when…’ posts every day that his non moomin valley followers wonder how he gets the time to do all that stuff, or in what a kind of place he lives. also always reblogging his friends’ content and adding commentary. description is something like: ‘Hi, I’m Moomin!’ and his about is nonexistent. to find out about him you rly gotta read his personal posts.
  • snork maiden: pure aesthetic blog. full of pink, fluffy stuff. she takes requests. sometimes edits her brothers posts into aesthetic stuff too. hey, can you blame her, those sketches of flying machines do look really pretty! has a super detailed about comprised 95% of personality quiz results and zodiacs (hufflepuff infj cancer sheep etc..)
  • little my: meme lord supreme. never stops shitposting. always has some quirky commentary or inside joke to add to her friends’ posts. follows every shitpost, meme and discourse generator bot tumblr has to offer. deeply into meme documentation. about is just a picture of guy fieri photoshopped 2 look like he’s riding a surfboard away from a huge explosion with sharks all around.
  • sniff: never posts original content and instead always reblogs from his irl friends with his own added thoughts. doesn’t reblog from or follow anyone BUT his friends and is deeply afraid of internet stranger danger and viruses. every time a virus post comes up, whether it’s real or not, he starts to freak out and go off about he is right about the internet being dangerous. the ONLY exception to this is when he reblogs pretty pictures of jewels and shiny things. he blocks any non jewel related blogs from unknown people that follow him tho.
  • snufkin: default theme. default icon. title says ‘snufkin’. almost never on but sometimes he’ll upload pics of his daily life with simple captions. like a picture of a fish he caught with the caption ‘fish’. he also reblogs once or twice from his friends with short sentences because according to him, typing a lot is hard and he doesn’t understand how some of his friends do it so fast. also it’s his own law that whenever he gets the (rare) time to be on, he goes on the blogs of every one of his friends, checking up on them and sending gentle asks like ‘hello sniff. i see your blog has lots of pretty jewels. i like that rose quartz you reblogged. see you, my friend.’ posted a selfie once n immediately got tons of people declaring they had a crush on him in his ask box. never posted any selfies ever since.
  • snork: science and science only. reblogs those gifs of weird ass chemical and/or physical reactions and sometimes provides explanation to the phenomenons if he can. reblogs sketches of planes and other flying machines tagged as ‘inspiration’ and even once in a while reblogs snork maiden’s aesthetic posts- when said posts feature pictures of the sky.
  • thingumy and bob: pro sj blog, lots of advocating for trans and non binary folk, as well as abuse victims. blog title is ‘bon-ninary’. don’t always understand how things work but are always willing to learn and help out, they’re basically too sweet for people to even have the nerve to argue angrily with them.
  • ninny: great friends with thingumy and bob, she also advocates for the protection of abuse victims. sometimes vents about her trauma. always reblogs little my’s meme posts and is a proud and strong memer herself.

The fanartists in the One Direction fandom are definitely the most talented bunch that I have ever come across and am proud to be a part of. HOWEVER, I have also been astounded by the amount of disrespect that we receive by some people in this fandom.

Us artists make all this fanart because we want to. Not because we have to. We do this out of the goodness of our hearts, taking time out of our lives because we want to share our art with you guys. So much time and effort goes into each post we make and when it gets stolen and discredited we get more and more inclined to stop making art all together. When someone erases our signature it takes away any ownership we have over the art. How would you feel if something you spent hours working so hard on is taken away from you? Like shit I bet. I know the feeling.

I have had my artworks stolen, manipulated, discredited and completely disrespected numerous times, and so have many other artists. Its gotten to a point where we have to keep an eye out on 1D art competitions to see if anyone has stolen our art and report it. And unfortunately, the fact that Zayn has been appreciating fanart more publicly recently means that there has been an increase in art with the original artist’s name erased and replaced by another tweeted at him for his attention.

Perhaps its due to a large chunk of this fandom not being educated enough about how to treat art and creative content, so this is me EDUCATING YOU.

Don’t repost art without the artist’s consent.
Fanartists are motivated by the amount of feedback and love we get from you guys. One form of this is the amount of notes that a post has. By reposting art instead of reblogging, retweeting or liking the art you are effectively taking away that feedback from the artist. If your only intention is to spread the love for this artist by posting it on a social media platform that the artist is not on, then make sure you ask the artist for their consent before posting it.

Don’t alter the art without the artist’s consent.
We spend hours perfecting our skill, style and art. When you alter it in any way its basically insulting our talent and decisions as an artist. One of my past artworks of an OT5 drawing was altered because it was too “Larry”. If you want an artwork that caters to your tastes then create it yourself or find another art account. Don’t alter a finished work just because you like it better that way.

Don’t use any part of the artwork for your own creations without the artist’s consent.
You want to make a video? An edit? Any creative material that contains the artwork? Make sure you’ve asked the original artist first before doing it and give credit where its due.

Don’t erase/alter the caption underneath the artwork.
Even if the caption says “AWURUNFEDIOJS:A"RK” you have no right to erase it from the original post because at least the artist has their url linked when you reblog with their caption so that others can find the original artist. And captions usually contain information about the art, perhaps dialogue, links to inspirational songs etc., so bottom line is don’t erase it.

Don’t send the boys any art without the artist’s consent.
Whether or not you are allowed to send art that is not yours to the boys depends on the artist and their content. I’m frankly fine with it as long as you give me credit and do nothing to alter my original artwork. But, this is different to every artist, because some artists create content that they absolutely do not want the boys to see. So please, before you go tweeting the boys, ask the artist if it is okay.

DO NOT ERASE THE ARTIST’S SIGNATURE
This is the absolute worst thing you can do to an artist. It means that you are erasing any sort of ownership that the artist has over the drawing and giving yourself credit for all the hard work that they have done. THIS IS STEALING ARTWORK. I’ve had many people erase my signature and insert their own and its basically the reason why I have watermarks all over most of my art now.

*Note To: Artists, please make sure you always have a legible signature on any art you post online because that is your stamp of copyright and ownership. For an extra blanket of protection, a watermark is a good idea !

Don’t profit off the artworks without the artist’s consent
You want a t-shirt with the artist’s design? Then go to the artist’s store to purchase one. If the artist doesn’t have a store, then ask them about it. Do not, under any circumstances use an artwork for merchandise and the like to sell and profit from. Its not yours, it’s the artist’s. Any profit form the product should go to the artist unless explicitly agreed upon by the artist and the seller themselves.
Entering competitions with stolen art also falls under this category: By entering a competition with another artist’s work you are taking away the profit (prize) that they would have gained if they themselves won said competition. If you want to design something for any competition, you do not have the right to use art that is not yours in any facet of the design without the consent of the original artist. And its entirely unfair for those entrants who worked hard on their own designs for the prize to be taken by an entrant with stolen art. Even though we have the right to take down stolen entries, the fact that we have to go to all the grief of contacting the competition organizers is just unnecessary if you all do the right thing.

To put it bluntly: profiting, altering, posting and using art without the artist’s consent is an infringement of copyright. And the artist is well within their rights to ask you to take it down and/or report you to the related organisation (i.e. tumblr, facebook, twitter, SONY). In severe cases they have the right to take legal action against you.

It boils down to the artist's consent. If you have their permission then you are allowed to do whatever it is you want to do with the art. But only if the artist has explicitly given their consent. Check the artist’s FAQ about this information, and if its not there, send them a message. Its always good to check first if you are unsure.

I absolutely love being part of this fandom and creating art to entertain you guys as I am sure all my fellow fanartists are too. However, you guys need to respect us and our creative content by adhering to these basic principles. If not, you’re gonna be seeing tonnes of heavy watermarks all over beautiful fanart in an effort to protect our ownership. Or worst case scenario, we will stop making fanart all together x

PLEASE RESPECT THE ARTISTS.

A guide as to why reposting utattemitas without permission isn’t good

Before I start, I’d like to say that I’m not condemning anybody for having posted utattemitas as audio posts without letting the singer know. Even I used to do it. This just isn’t commonly spread information within the utaite community on tumblr, so I understand your lack of understanding. Trust me. I’ve been there.

So, let’s start with the basics (if it gets too long for you, just skip to the TL;DR):

How am I possibly being a hypocrite by reposting utattemitas without permission?

A lot of people on tumblr (at least that I’ve gotten to know) are advocates for getting permission to repost art from pixiv before doing so. Because, yea! The artist deserves to know when their art is being used elsewhere! You can’t just take their art without their permission to get more notes yourself while the original artist is stuck getting no views!

So… are utaites not artists? Did they not go through a lot of hard work to train their voices so well just as someone who draws had to practice a lot before they could become so good? Because when you say that people need artist’s permission to repost their work and then turn around and repost an utaite’s cover without their permission, that’s basically what you’re saying. You’re belittling their existence as an artist just because they don’t draw and you’re belittling their hard work just because you can’t see the product of it on a screen.

I’m not trying to say you automatically believe this because you repost without permission–I know that a majority of the people who repost utaite’s covers do it out of the utmost respect and with the best intentions, but that’s really not how it works. If you truly want to help an utaite, you need to ask them before you share their work like that.

TL;DR Utaite are artists just as pixiv users are artists, so if you need to ask pixiv users for permission to repost their work, you need to ask utaite to repost their work as well.

How does uploading utattemitas as audio posts hurt an utaite?

It’s true that only a small percentage of non-Japanese-speaking utaite fans use tumblr for their findings, and I should probably be directing this speech at YouTube if anything, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t make an impact. There are reposts of utattemitas that have thousands of notes on here, that I’m sure an utaite would love to see those numbers added to their views/MyList count. But the thing is: they don’t. A huge majority of people liking/reblogging audio reposts on tumblr aren’t clicking on the link and watching the video/MyListing it.

But I tell everyone to check out the original video in the caption/my description!

Yea, well, that’s not working. On my old NND blog, where I used to repost utattemitas without permission, I did the same thing. But after translating one of the videos on NND that I had reposted, I realized then that I wasn’t helping. I was actually hurting. As some of you may know, when you translate a video on NND, you can see how many people from your region have viewed that video. So, when I saw that the view count was below 100 views for the English server, I was disgusted. Now, I understand that not everybody on tumblr uses the English server, but on the other hand, not everyone using the English server is from tumblr. And I also get that there’s always the chance that one person gave my repost 2 notes, but…… My repost had almost 1,000 notes. So, even if every person had liked and reblogged the post, that would still leave about 500 people who had listened to the song. And about 400 people who didn’t bother clicking on the link. Now, I understand, it’s a lot easier to just listen to the song on tumblr than it is on NND if you don’t have an account there, so I’m not blaming the people who gave the repost notes. The responsibility falls on the person from tumblr who reposted it to begin with.

TL;DR Nobody on tumblr watches the original video, which is taking away views from the utaite that you’re trying to support.

But I want the notes on tumblr!

It’s okay to want notes, I’m as thirsty for them as the rest of you. However, there are alternatives to reposting utattemitas as audio posts in which you can still get notes.

Make a cool gifset!!

People love them some pretty gifsets and you can get tons of notes from them. If you link the NND song in the caption, then people will be drawn in with the nice-looking PV and will want to listen to the song.

Just!! Ask for permission!!!!!!

It’s really not as difficult as it seems. As long as you can find the utaite’s e-mail/twitter, you can easily ask them, and I’ve only ever gotten very polite responses in turn. If you need help finding their e-mail or asking them in Japanese (bc it’s kind of rude to ask in a language that they don’t speak) just ask me for help–I’d be more than happy to assist you.

Post it as a link instead!!

I understand–some people don’t have the means to make gifs, and some are too intimidated to ask for permission. Therefore, I’d like to recommend the simple option of literally just linking to the song. It is so easy. So much easier than uploading an audio post. And you aren’t limited to only 3 posts a day like with audio posts.

But nobody reblogs links!!

Yea, well!! We gotta make them do it!!

People don’t reblog links, because they could just as easily reblog an audio post that is much more convenient. But, hear me out, if everybody stopped uploading utattemitas as audio posts when they don’t have permission to do so, then people would be left with only one other option and that would be to reblog the link. So please, just stop reposting without permission it’s really not cool.

TL;DR Just ask for permission if you want to repost the audio, or simply post it as a link

Why are you so heated about this?!

Because I’ve made dozens of posts addressing this issue (mostly on my main blog) and it still continues to happen. I’ve asked, on multiple occasions, for people to explain to me why they believe it’s okay to repost without permission and I’ve only ever gotten one response which was basically, “Because it’s easier to do so.”

When I found out I was taking away views from the girl who’s been my biggest inspiration since I was 13, I was distraught. And I just can’t understand how people, after reading this, could justify not asking for permission from the people who inspire them the same way. Honestly, talking to your favorite utaite for the first time is exhilarating, so I just don’t see why you wouldn’t want to ask for permission?

TL;DR Because you have every reason in the world to not repost without permission, yet people do it anyway

Please, at least take what I’ve said into consideration, if not into practice. And even if you don’t repost without permission, you can still help by not reblogging those posts. I hope everyone has a wonderful day, and I’m sorry for such a long post.
