1.) it wasn’t Disney who turned down Coco but DREAMWORKS. 
and to those who STILL erroneously insist that Disney/Pixar turned down The Book of Life

2.) People getting mad at this:

Marigolds are traditional to our culture as well as to the holiday, ESPECIALLY in petal form. Not the best example but that’s like getting mad at different Christmas movies for using mistletoe.

3.) “Oh it’s the same plot.” Has anyone looked up the plot for this movie other than outright bashing it from the trailer? 
“The footage, raw though it may be, spun a compelling story about Miguel, a sweet kid who loves music despite the fact that his abuelita banned music long ago, thanks to an ancient drama involving Miguel’s great-great-grandfather—a dashing musician—who walked out on the family. That musician, Miguel discovers at the start of the film, is his town’s most famous son: deceased film star and music supernova Ernesto de la Cruz. On the eve of Día de Muertos, Miguel breaks into de la Cruz’s mausoleum in order to borrow the famous skull guitar that hangs there so that he can enter a talent competition and convince his family to embrace music again. Once Miguel touches the guitar, he becomes something of a living ghost. His family can no longer see him, but Miguel can now see all of his dead ancestors—who look like fantastically decorative skeletons—crossing over a bright bridge made of marigold flower petals from the Land of the Dead. Looking for help and answers, Miguel travels to the Land of the Dead—a dazzlingly vibrant, stacked metropolis inspired by the Mexican city of Guanajuato—himself and sets off an adventure with trickster skeletal companion Hector to find the rest of his family, de la Cruz, and the answer to how he can fix this curse.”  
You know how insistent Pixar is on always making original films. So don’t you think that they would continue that?

4.) “But the white director who thinks he knows everything because he’s been to Mexico.” That’s right, a white person who is not of Mexican/Latinx culture can not truly KNOW our culture simply by visiting it. And Lee Unkrich knows this fact. Which why he assembled a group for the sake of making sure the movie is culturally accurate, rather than him taking on that role

you know, a team of actual latinx. Including someone who was a huge critic of Coco, and is a critic of Disney, Lalo Alcaraz. He is most famously known for his response to the action of Disney attempting to trademark Dia de los Meurtos (which will be our next point). It’s not Alcaraz selling out. It’s him working together with the movie so it’s not just Disney trying to bring in more Latinx fans but rather creating what Unkrich’s true mission: “a love letter to Mexico.” This team along with many other Latinx creatives (like Adrian Molina who was originally just a writer and then promoted to co-director) and a fully latinx cast (again, as insisted by Unkrich), are working together to make it a Latinx piece of media. 5.) We all know and got rightfully angry at Disney for attempting to trademark Dia de los Muertos. This was due to the similar original name the movie had. As expected, it received intense backlash to which Disney quickly revoked the request to trademark. Unkrich was the first to vocalize that this was a mistake. This even leading to that point most likely has to do with him being a white man not of our culture, but this humbling experience is what really knocked that message into him and he began recruiting people like the ones in the above point to make sure that the movie itself is true to the people, culture, and holiday, in ways he himself could never fully grasp.

6.) It’s about the Day of the Dead like The Book of Life. My response to this is easy: look at how many movies are there about Christmas, Halloween, Easter, Valentine’s day, Saint Patrick’s day, etc.

7.) Gutierrez himself doesn’t want it to be a competition but as two wonderful films about one aspect of Latinx that will hopefully lead to more in the future.

I love The Book of Life, and is one of my favorite movies if I’m being honest. When it first came out I was filled with such pride and joy for many reasons. One of course for it being a gorgeously rendered film, but for it being such a positive and beautiful representation and celebration of Mexico. As someone who grew up only seeing white main characters, with people like my family and I as only side characters, it brings me such joy to see more media being produced in which Mexicans are the focus along with our culture (which is agreeably much more diverse than what is being tapped into). We still got a long way to go as Mexico is still only one group of Latinx culture, but we are witnessing the stepping stones of Hollywood beginning to reach out and representing this community by working with people of those cultures. The Book of Life will always have a special place in my heart, but I’m not letting my love of that movie keep me from supporting Latinx creators that are putting out Coco. I’m finally getting the representation that I craved as a kid and loving it.

You know what movie I will always be proud of?

Alien vs. Predator.

Why?

Because it was a stupid premise that was going to get people’s butts in seats for one reason and one reason only, and that was to see the Alien fight the Predator, so they could literally do whatever they wanted with the rest of the movie, they didn’t care, so what did they do?

Put Sanaa Lathan in as the lead, gave her a shield made of an alien’s crest and a spear made of an alien’s tail and said “go fight alongside the Predator to save the world from an Alien Queen”, and that’s what she did. They didn’t have to do that, they could have had a white guy, they could have had a white woman, a black man, even, but no, they went with a black woman and made her incredible. And when she fought her way to the end of that movie, they made sure that the most dangerous hunters in the galaxy recognized her and respected her, and they marked her because they decided “You are a paragon of your species and we honor you as one of our own” so in this universe when the Predators think of the Best that Humanity has to offer, they imagine the face of a black woman of science with long curly hair.

I SAW SPLIT

BEFORE YOU ALL PUSH THE UNFOLLOW AND BLOCK BUTTONS LISTEN TO ME. THERE ARE SPOILERS BUT I FEEL IT NECESSARY TO MAKE MY POINT.

The movie is being portrayed on here (tumblr) as though it is making people with DID as terrifying and harmful. This is why so many people are boycotting the movie. Now you can hold this belief but I do not believe it.

If you actually see the movie, you will see that it is not about a man who is consumed by evil and wants to kill people. It is about a man with 23 personalities that has certain parts of him that have harmful beliefs but he tries so hard to convince them that they are incorrect and the harmful parts of him only feel this way because they are tired of being ignored and treated like they’re crazy. (Even in the end, after he goes crazy, Dennis and Hedwig (2 of his main personalities) are talking and Hedwig says that this incident means that people have to realize they all exist.) The film highlights the struggle between his different personalities and how they all came about and why they hold the beliefs they do. It also highlights how ignored the illness is in society and even in mental health communities. For this reason, I can say that the movie is not “corrupting society to believe that people with disorders are frightening.” The movie trailers show it the way they do to attract people who want to see horror movies but when you actually see the movie, it is so much more than that.

The film also highlights abuse/trauma victims and not in a way that makes them weak. The main character is beautiful and strong and doesn’t rely on anyone else to save her. She, herself, runs, fights, and helps herself. At the end, she gets herself help for the abuse situation she has been in for a long time, the only help coming from the police officer that she turns to. For this reason, I can say that the movie did not portray abuse victims in a bad way.

STOP FEEDING INTO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE TELLING YOU THIS MOVIE IS HORRIBLE. THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE WITH DISORDERS MORE VISIBLE TO THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA.

Why do you want to fight Nicholas Sparks? And how would you challenge him (thrown glove, e-vite, etc)?

Thrown glove, definitely. This has to be PERSONAL, even though my problem with him is really everything he represents.

I have talked before about how his brand of dreck has basically killed the romcom, but I don’t think I’ve talked about why I hate his brand of dreck, so gather around, chickadees, for “How do I hate thee, Nicholas Sparks? Let me count the ways.”

1. Tragedy porn. Look, honestly, I liked “A Walk to Remember.” Mostly because of “Only Hope” and Shane West’s face, but I liked it (if I watched it today, even divorced from the whole of Sparks’s canon, I would hate it, but that’s a separate issue). But as time went on and I watched a couple more of his movies and then heard about the others, it’s just … look. I know that we make stories to make people feel a certain way. We want to elicit an emotional response. And that’s a good thing, you know? And I know I rail about darkness and sadness a lot, but I’m not even saying that stories should only try to elicit good emotions. That feels shallow.

But with Nicholas Sparks and other tear-jerker-type stories (see: reasons I never got into Grey’s Anatomy, reasons I’m more likely to read straight-up darkfic than what people call “sads”), the emotional manipulation is incredibly blatant and formulaic and … I don’t know, is “cheap” the word I want? I don’t see the point in a story that says “Here’s a thing you love. Fate is going to take that thing you love from you. The main character is going to lift their chin like Scarlett O’Hara and say ‘tomorrow is another day!’“ I don’t feel like it’s something the creator is sharing with me, I feel like it’s something they’re trying to do to me, and I don’t take kindly to that.

3. His whole brand is marketed to women, books and movies both, they’re chick flicks, date movies, stuff For the Women, but he sure is a dude. Not that men aren’t allowed to write romances, but it’s just that slimy feeling of “a wise man making money off all those silly weepy romantic women” rather than “a wise man showing that it’s okay for both women and men to cry over a love story where tragic things happen.” Like. Nora Roberts sure doesn’t have this kind of franchise. And I can’t say I enjoy reading Nora Roberts, but one could excise the sex from her books and make movies and market them to women, but somehow nobody got to be a romantic-book-adaptation juggernaut until Sparks. Partly because he’s a man and partly because

4. Happiness Isn’t Art. There seems to be this implication that because things end badly, because they’re sad, because they make you cry, it’s okay that they’re romantic. The sadness makes sure that they’re art. And fuck that, honestly? Tearjerkers are fine, whatever, they can (and should, I don’t want to stop people writing for the genres that appeal to them) exist in the world even if I don’t want to consume them, but nobody in this world gets to tell me that the unhappiness elevates them higher than the romcom. That it’s better than Nora Roberts not because he’s a man but because the sadness makes it somehow more worthy.

5. Look at that face. Tell me you don’t want to punch that smug face.

6. Sometimes you just read a book or watch a movie and know that the person behind the story is ideologically opposed to you in pretty much every possible way.

Just to sum up, I guess … I’m a person who loves reading and writing love stories. I always have been, since I was a little kid. If there’s tragedy and difficulty along the way, sure, I’m willing to go along with that, but when there’s someone who consistently says “no, this is only worthy if I take happiness away from you, because happiness isn’t art, because romance is only worth of attention if tragedy interrupts it,” then I get ready for a fight. And since he’s very much the trend leader there, I am pretty much ready to meet him in the pit at all times.

I hate that there’s a limit to the Gay™ I can reasonably expect from modern media. Even though there are millions of books, movies, and tv shows with purely straight characters I could never hope for a show with more than a few or, god forbid, only queer characters. It’s like there’s an unspoken rule that I can’t hope for more than one, maybe two non-straight characters or relationships because any more would be ‘unrealistic’ or 'pandering’. Fucking pander to me man, to all the other queer people invested in the worlds you create, because it’s not fair that because there’s a lesbian couple there’s an invisible cap and now I’ll never see a bi main character, or that having a trans side character is “enough activism” and that trans character will never have another friend on the show like them. Why do you have to maroon all your gays in this heterosexual world? Why can’t you let us find each other??

I was at a con recently. And while looking at some of the art, I made a comment to a guy who had a collection of cat avengers prints that he was missing the best avenger. So he goes, ‘oh and who is that’ and I just kinda look sideways at him and say 'hawkeye, the only one you don’t have’. To wich he of course smirks and says 'is he really the best or is it just cause of jeremy renner?’

First of all… Jeremy Renner is a gorgeous human being and he is more than enough reason for Hawkeye to be awesome, so why the hell you got that smug look on your face like I’m just some random ass fangirl who don’t know shit about comics. I was fuckin dressed like Captain Marvel, 100% comic accurate costume thank you very much.

So my dad starts laughing cause he can see I got my 'fight me’ face on. And I proceed to list each and every reason why I have loved Hawkeye since waaaaay before the movies and why he gets even better with new movies and comics.

NUMBER ONE, he is the only fully human Avenger in every single story line.

To which of course I get 'well what about Black Widow’ well sir you must not know your comics very well because in the Earth-616 universe she has the Red Room version of the super soldier serum which gives her enhanced physical abilities as well as a very long lifespan.

Then comes the 'well Scott Lang is human’ well yeah but he’s got a mother FuCkiNG SUPER SUIT. What does Hawkeye have? Spandex or leather, not quite the same thing. And you take away that super suit, is Scott still a super hero? No he is in jail for being a thief. You take away Hawkeye ’ super sui… oh wait that’s right HE DON’T GOT ONE.

'But what about Black Panther he is human right?’ Do you know anything about comics dude? The dude eats a magical plant and is gifted his powers by the Wakandan Panther God and has enhanced speed, strength, agility, healing, reflexes, stamina, etc. NOT FULLY HUMAN he also is proclaimed King of the Dead and is granted the power and knowledge of past Black Panthers and gains the ability to control the dead… so awesome but still not human.

Hawkeye is 100% human 100% of the time (except a very brief moment when he borrowed pym particles just to help out on a mission) and still manages to keep up with super humans, gods and guys with fancy super suits.

NUMBER TWO, he is deaf, canononically.

'Well Daredevil is blind’ his accident enhanced his other senses… and not an Avenger… so your argument is not even relevant.

NUMBER THREE, he shoots a bow, usually a recurve, in battle with people that have magic and laser guns and other shit and he can shoot it with out even looking!

'But he has trick arrows’ wich are guaranteed to be weighted terribly and that weight changes depending on which arrow it is. So he not only has to compensate for the strange weight but he has to do it on the fly in the heat of battle for each individual arrow. Not to mention when he shoots multiple at once.

And come on, have you ever tried to shoot a bow and arrow, it’s not easy. It takes a lot of practice patients and skill. Especially to get as good as him.

NUMBER FOUR, I mean have you read the guys backstory? If you looked up tragic backstory in the dictionary, you would see a picture of Clint Barton. He was orphaned after his abusive father got into a car accident that killed his mother as well. Was sent to a children’s home, ran away to the circus, was trained by Swordsman and Trickshot who were not the best mentors, was betrayed and abandoned by Swordsman and his brother and left for dead, ended up severely injuring his brother, had to leave Trickshot, when he tried to do the hero thing he was mistaken for a criminal, was manipulated into trying to kill Iron Man, kept falling in love with women who didn’t love him back, left the Avengers at one point believing he was unwanted, was passed over because he was not super human, watched his brother die, was forced to leave the Avengers, had a bounty put on his right arm, lost former mentor Trickshot to cancer, split with his wife then watched her die saving him, sacrificed himself and came back, was almost assasinated, went to prison so the rest of his team could go free, was shot and conducted a suicide mission that saved the planet but killed him, lost his memory, was vanished into nothingness, doubted he was himself or even alive, faked his death, and that’s just the short list.

NUMBER FIVE, he ran the West Coast branch of the Avengers, as well as other treams.

NUMBER SIX, he took on the mantle of Captain America for a short time.

NUMBER SEVEN, Caw Caw Mother Fucker.

So yeah, suffice to say that I left the guy speechless surounded by his friends who were nodding along and adding in their own bits of info and laughing hysterically at him. I turned to walk away after that mic drop and heard him mumble, 'well I guess I’m making a cat hawkeye’

Mild Spoilers For the New Beauty and the Beast

I can’t stop thinking about LeFou subtly slipping coins to the various bar patrons to “encourage” them to participate in the Gaston song. What a great touch, Disney.

Also can’t stop thinking about Josh Gad’s performance like dude I underestimated him. He brought real dimension to a character that was previously just a prop more than a person, but in this movie he becomes this voice of reason and you actually see him start to doubt Gaston as the story progresses like yes character development!

Literally my only true bone to pick with the movie overall is the fact that Disney had an opportunity to give the Beast a name and they fucking didn’t why. You wanted to humanize his story by giving him a tragic past but you never give him a fucking name???

Go Go ‘Power Rangers’ (2017 Review)

Is this good? Is this bad? Will my inner-child allow me to judge this appropriately?

“Power Rangers” is a reboot of the classic 1990s action-packed children’s show “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” which in turn is based on the Japanese tokusatsu “Super Sentai Series.” It’s directed by Dean Israelite and stars a cast of young actors, as well as Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader and Elizabeth Banks. The film is set in the small, fictional town of Angel Grove, where local high school students Jason Scott, Kimberly Hart and Billy Cranston (Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott and RJ Cyler, respectively) are all caught up in detention. Through a series of shenanigans, they come across Trini and Zack (Becky G and Ludi Lin, respectively) as they all discover an ancient, otherworldly construct. It’s there where they meet Zordon (Cranston) and his robot assistant Alpha 5 (voiced by Hader), and attain the responsibility of becoming a powerful team known as the Power Rangers, and to stop the destruction of an ancient, powerful witch known as Rita Repulsa (Banks). 

This is the absolute perfect “what if” movie. The answer to “what if they remade ‘Power Rangers’ for adults” question. This is the film we asked for, albeit cautiously. We really owe it to franchises such as the “Transformers” series, because without them, this film would be seen as an impossible reach.

Being a millennial, I was very much a child when “Power Rangers” had its long television run, and I stayed true through each incarnation, from “Mighty Morphin” to “Lightspeed Rescue,” and considered myself a retired fan after “Dino Thunder” (I was already in middle school at the time). So yes, shameful as it is, I know my shit. As you can see, I want this to be good. But was it?

Yes. Surprisingly, it was pretty good. It’s not shockingly “I thought this was going to be shit but it ended up being amazingly amazing” good. It’s just good.

Here’s one thing that the film does better than the TV show: the acting. In a great departure from the “Saved by the Bell” mood that the 90s actors gave us, we now have grounded, realistic, rebellious teenagers. These new actors fit the “teenagers with attitude” description way better than the 90s actors ever did. You have Montgomery as Jason, playing the rebel who ends up having to deal with the most responsibility. Scott plays Kimberly, the girl who does a good job of not just being the obligatory female casting, or the fighting damsel-in-distress, unlike the original. The dialogue between these two is usually filled with charm, whether its casual banter or a proclamation of their contempt for Angel Grove. 

But they do something different with the rest of the cast, which helps to modernize them. Cyler as Billy provides the humor and keeps the grittiness from ever getting lower and lower. Of the five teenagers, he is the one with the most charisma But he also serves to represent autistic teens everywhere. Yes, unlike the television counterpart, they made the Blue Ranger autistic, which is a pretty bold and commendable step for something based off a children’s property.

To keep the ball rolling, they then make Becky G’s Trini represent lesbians and confused, oppressed teenagers everywhere. Okay, this film had me at shedding light on autism, but encouraging more LGBT representation? Hats off to you, Lionsgate and Saban. Despite this, I found Becky G’s performance to be slightly annoying until about halfway through the movie, when they developed her much more, and gave her a more integral role in the plot. 

While I praised the rest of the cast, I’d have to drop the axe on Ludi Lin as Zack, the Black Ranger.  Compared to all these convincing performances, Lin’s is absolutely haphazard. The way he is introduced is to set up how much of a cocky outsider he is, so naturally he’s by himself. He then starts speaking to himself, which is one of my absolute biggest pet peeves in a movie. I despise movie moments where normal-functioning people start speaking or quipping to themselves, the only sensible reason being that the writers assume the audience is too dumb to know what the character is thinking. I get it if a character has schizophrenia or another mental illness, or if the words are limited to comedic inner-banter, but not in this case. He’s someone with decent social-competence and no reason to quarrel with himself, other than provide exposition to the audience.

But like Trini, I did find him to be much less annoying when he opened up. They gave him a pretty touching backstory with his own troubles, and they make his motivations really apparent. And just to keep the ball rolling, he’s also the most foreign one of the group, being bilingual, unlike the original black ranger. Now that I think about it, many of the Power Ranger series’ casts don’t feature any overtly foreign characters, apart from maybe of an alien race. 

That is precisely why this casting works. Whether or not you find these characters annoying, you can’t doubt that they’re there for a good reason, and you might even warm up to them as the movie progresses. They also help to introduce bouts of political correctness, but they aren’t preachy or condescending about it (which is really the only good way to go about political correctness). They represent people of various colors, mental states and social capabilities, showing (but not telling) that everyone is capable of extraordinary things as long as they have camaraderie.

I can’t say much about Cranston as Zordon. It’s a great homage, seeing as how Cranston has actually been a part of “Power Rangers” since the original television show, where he voiced many of the villains they face. I do love his voice-work here, and while it took some getting used to, I ended up really liking how they presented him. Rather than a chubby, floating head in a tube, they made him manifest into a wall, kind of like one of those pinpression toys. Not to mention they could have easily made him a one-dimensional character. But they went above and beyond to give him his own arc, his own set of feelings and doubts, and a world of lore behind him.

If you thought Alpha 5 was annoying in the television show, then you can rest your worries because Bill Hader fixed him up good. The original’s voice was so high-pitched and screechy; basically in typical 90s fashion (or how the 90s thought Aliens would sound like). This time, he just kind of does the same thing he did as Fear from “Inside Out,” except less screaming. His design had me slightly worried but I got used to it.

Now, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa has me split down the middle. On the one hand, I do like that at least ONE person in this entire film is trying to recall the absurdity and campiness of the original series. At the same time, I found her to be over-the-top, and incredibly outlandish compared to the rest of the grounded cast. She is guilty of overacting here, which is both a blessing and a curse. The prosthetics on her are amazing though, from both start to finish. She starts out as an outright horror character, which is something I didn’t expect to see even in the gritty version of a children’s property. 

If you kept up with me for this long, you know that a recurring theme here is that this film takes several risks that are rather uncharacteristic of a children’s property. Sure, there are hints of silliness to try and match the youthful appeal of the original, but they also throw in more mature bits of humor, about things such as drug tests and jacking off a cow (no joke). Me personally, I welcome these jokes. If anything, this is much more of a film for the adults who grew up watching “Power Rangers,” rather than children. The maturity really shines through in the form of character development and chemistry.

I must say that if you are bringing a child to watch this, keep in mind there will be mild swearing, and several mature jokes.

A common criticism (ad nauseam, pretty much) is that this film is a forced collision between two different movies. Two thirds of the movie is essentially the origin story, which focuses mainly on character development. At the same time, this is the section that appeals to the audience the most, whether you’re fans of the original or not. No one comes into anything titled “Power Rangers” and expects to feel for the characters. But through one particular scene where all the characters develop a kinship, we develop a peculiar attachment to each of them. It was at this moment that I’m glad these people are the ones I’m spending five more movies with (Yup, that’s right).

But when it sticks to the original, it definitely sticks, and that’s where the last third of the movie comes in. If you’re looking for cool looking suits fighting monsters with martial arts and gymnastics, you will get it. If you’re looking for giant robot dinosaurs battling another giant monster, you will get it. And MOST OF ALL, if you want to, at least once, hear the iconic theme song, you will get it. In all it’s pure, epic goodness.

But this is where I have to defend my appreciation for this movie, because many people will come in accusing me of being “blinded by nostalgia.” Despite having these borrowed features from the original show, there is really nothing nostalgic about it. The action here is far better than most of the show’s episodes. There is no silliness to be had apart from what would be silly by realistic standards (as opposed to having two obligatory bully characters).

Even some elements taken from the show are vastly different. Case in point: Rita, who in this film is actually getting shit done by herself rather than sitting up in some moon tower yelling at everyone.

Even the formula of the show is broken up here. Back then, everything was so fast-paced to where every time a new series was brought in, the new team of Power Rangers would unrealistically form intimate familial connection and extraordinary abilities within 20 minutes. This film actually shows you that the Power Rangers had to train for this, both physically and mentally. They didn’t just have these abilities bestowed upon them as a result of the plot rushing it together. You see them work for it, which is something I really appreciated about it.

I had to bring that up because many of the people who didn’t like this film will be quick to see reactions like mine and guilt me for “nostalgia.” But that “tone difference” that they’re faulting this for is the reason why you can’t pin nostalgia on this. All that means is that everything I liked about this film has been on its own merits, maybe (at most) perpetuated by quick little homages to the original. 

I suppose before I wrap this up I should mention one more thing. Not really a problem, but more like something I wish happened: I wish they played the theme song more. It was wonderful hearing the iconic theme song, perfectly borrowed from the 1995 film, and at the height of its “Power Ranger-ness.” But I felt that if they really were gonna throw it in there, they should have totally owned it and at least left it playing for a bit longer. If not that, then at least make an instrumental cover to play in the background during the climax, rather than GODDAMN KANYE.

This is a film that has fans and critics alike split down the middle, but it’s pretty clear that everyone who hates it is hating it for the same two reasons: (1) It has a massive tone-clash towards the end, and (2) It caters way too much toward product promotion for Krispy Kreme donuts. I do agree with the latter, make no mistake. But when I hear people complain about this tone-clash, it reminds me of people who complained about the “slow parts” of every other superhero film, whether it’s “Captain America: Civil War,” or “Batman v Superman.” Apart from being a “Power Rangers” movie, this is also an origin story film. And for something as ridiculous as “Power Rangers,” it definitely requires a slow initiation process. To get us going on a six-movie deal, the creators will have to help casual viewers acclimate to the premise, because chances are the naysayers are the ones who skipped out on this franchise as children, and therefore missed their window of opportunity. Ironic how a movie based on a children’s property requires a mature level of patience from the audience.

As I said before, if you came into this wanting to see colored suits, martial arts, explosions and giant robots, you will get it. If you’re dragged into this film but appreciate elements like character development and chemistry, you will get that too. As someone who enjoys both, I actually would go so far as to say I loved this movie. I don’t care if I’m alone on this, but I can comfortably say that I loved the “Power Rangers” movie.

If you’re looking at Tina Goldstein and Newt Scamander, then reading the blurb about FBaWtFT2 and wondering how long it could POSSIBLY take for these two idiots to get their shit together and get married…you really didn’t pay attention to the first movie at all, did you?

Here we have Tina who:
- is the career girl, a MACUSA Auror at 25 (I mean holy shit that is impressive)
- supports her baby sister
- probably has no interest in playing house for any reason (see: Career Girl)
- almost certainly doesn’t want kids (see again: Career Girl)
- does not want to live in England OR a suitcase and actually only wants to live in NYC (see: MACUSA and sister)
- doles out 10 “oh no you did not just do that” looks for every half-smile
- dresses in menswear
- literally is too oblivious to notice mustard on her nose
- can’t verbally express actual emotions to save her life
- Thunderbird

And then there’s Newt who:
- is happiest when he’s traveling the world
- works at MoM (England) when he’s not traveling the world
- has a fierce connection and loyalty to Hogwarts and Dumbledore
- literally lives out of a suitcase
- already has like a hundred children (make no mistake I mean he calls himself “mum.”)
- annoys people
- sulks when he doesn’t get his way at age 29
- gets flustered and sad when Tina yells at him
- is still hung up on his ex who is clearly a sociopath
- can’t verbally express emotions to save his life
- Hufflepuff

I mean, you guys. This could take a decade.

The thing is that Godfrey’s Magnus was the only reason I even bothered with that goddamn movie. The one only reason I watched it. I did like his Magnus…

But when people say that “Harry is trying too hard - Harry’s Magnus isn’t good enough - Godfrey’s Magnus is the best” I can’t help but think that what they are really saying is that Magnus should be reduced to 3 seconds minutes of screen time, and never be heard of or seen, unless the main white characters need his services to move the plot. Because that what Magnus was in that goddamn movie.

And that’s how some parts of the fandom prefer to see characters of color on their screens.

This reminds me of the time, few years ago, when I was in the TWD fandom, and was looking through one of the fandom forums. There was that one racist person who kept hating on Glenn in every post they made in the thread. And then in one of their posts that person said something along the lines that they used to like Glenn in season 1, “until the show ruined him”… With character development, I assume.

What is interesting, a lot of people in the [general] fandom, the ones that used to hate Glenn later in seasons, considered season!one Glenn to be the best version of the character.

It’s easy to love a flawless helpful sidekick, who cracks a joke or two, but never is the center of the plot. Just like the genral TWD fandom loves Jerry now, they claimed to love Glenn back then. Coincidentally, the fandom started to hate Glenn viciously during the s3b arc – when he had the most of the character growth and development…

Don’t get me wrong, I love season one Glenn too, but he was just a character with great potential back then, who only grew more complex and interesting through seasons.

Same with Godfrey’s Magnus – he had a great potential, that sadly was never realized. Harry actually has this opportunity to flesh out this character and he is making it happen.

Yes Sakura, why? She hasn’t done anything for him apart of being a stalker, she is a ninja no? She has to know how to protect herself, she is not weak isn’t she? This part is so stupid. Like if Naruto have feelings for Hinata why he never showed any interest in her, after her confession he ignored her. After the war he ignored her again, that says a lot. He doesn’t care for her or simple, he doesn’t show the same feelings. He only see her as a friend. What they did here was a intent to making him look like an idiot and an asshole for the only reason of not corresponding Hinata’s sama feelings. Like what? And Sakura did this, knowing well that Naruto has feelings on her and Sasuke. What a disgusting movie.

Thoughts on “Logan” (Spoilers Ahead!!)

  • Logan is a lot of things: a western, another sequel, a comic-book film, and just a downright great film in general. I can’t think of any other way to say goodbye to both Hugh Jackman and his version of Wolverine than this. The story, script, acting, cinematography, and score all perfectly blend together to help the film transcend above most others in the comic-book/superhero genre. Logan is also the best X-Men or Wolverine film hands down, and that’s including X2 and Deadpool.
  • Both Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart give fantastic final performances as their characters, bringing a sense of the pair truly becoming like father and son. The way their characters have changed since the very first X-Men is astounding, and they should both feel very proud for the work they put into this film and all the other films before it. (Well, maybe not Origins.)
  • Dafne Keen, the young actress who portrays Laura, is so perfectly cast it’s unreal! Not only is she capable of holding her own against greats like Jackman and Stewart, she can do it all without even speaking a single word for 2/3 of the movie! Her body language and facial expressions perfectly convey everything her character is thinking or feeling, you don’t need for her to speak to know what’s going on with her. Also, she’s a surprise but welcome Lantix and Spanish representation!
  • The film is rated R for a reason people! Do not take your children to see this film unless they are of age, I don’t care how much they like Wolverine! The film is possibly even more violent than Deadpool was, with it’s more grounded approach having more of a traumatic impact than Deadpool’s tongue-in-cheek humor influencing it’s violence. There’s a lot of limbs being sliced off in this movie, and even a disturbing scene where a family of nice farmers is murdered by a younger clone of Logan shortly after they offer him, Charles, and Laura a place to stay. (Like, it’s pretty fucking horrifying.)
  • The story is also much darker and tragic than the previous X-Men films, tackling themes of growing old and mortality that are very much a reflection of what so many of us go through with our loved ones. I won’t sugar-coat it guys, it’s extremely hard taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. It’s very difficult and draining both physically and emotionally for us and the person suffering. Logan taking care of Charles in the film is a perfect example of this.
  • Quite possibly the most tragic thing about Logan is that we learn the X-Men are dead because Xavier kills them. It’s an accident of course, his degenerative brain disease causing him to have seizures that also produces deadly psychic shockwaves, but it’s still sad and horrible nonetheless.
  • Also when you think about it, Logan actually takes place in the new timeline Logan helped create in Days of Future Past. That means all that effort to save mutantkind was pretty much wasted.. Logan can’t catch a fucking break can he?
  • The main villain of the film, Dr. Zander Rice, is the only part of the film I disliked. The secondary antagonists like Donald Pierce and X-24 held much more weight and were definitely more impactful than Rice, one being the leader of a cyborg security squad and the other literally serving as a physical representation of Logan’s animalistic “Wolverine” side.
  • “Family” and “Legacy” play a huge part in Logan’s plot, specifically when it comes to the character’s relationship with Laura. She is the product of his DNA being used to essentially recreate him to create the perfect soldier, but this also makes her his biological daughter and as such she offers him something he’s never truly had before. This comes full circle in Logan’s final moments before his death, where he tells her that even though she’s like him that she shouldn’t be what they made her to be. Though she is like him in so many ways, Logan wants her to live as a better person than he could have ever been.
  • His final words, “So this is what it feels like..,” can be interpreted as both him finally being able to experience death or as him finally being able to see some part of him become something good.

Logan gets a 10/10

So I started watching 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. I remember reading this book when I was in my teens, probably around the age 15. The first and only time I ever read it, I “enjoyed” it. Well, as much as you can enjoy a book about teenage suicide. It’s been 10 years and I still find it to be an important book, if not a bit draggy and filled with teen angst and melodrama. I was a bit disappointed to see a few reviews for the show that completely missed the point. Sure, it might drag a bit. We all know that book to movie adaptations sometimes (most of the time) miss the mark, so we all go in with lower expectations. And they tend to add or cut off certain scenes that may or may not mean a lot to the plot. But when the journalists writing the articles complain about the amount of teen angst or the fact that Hannah used cassettes instead of something more modern or the usage of 80′s music or other trivial. The point of 13 Reasons Why is to address the fact that a teenage girl killed herself and that there were many reasons why she did so, none of which have anything to do with the minor issues found in the show or book.


Rant over. I get salty when older men who seem to forget what it is like to be a teenage girl in high school.

So the countdown. Valentine’s Day, friendos. You see that goop covering his face? Yeah, valentines day, 50 shades feels, I’m throwing that bullshit out of the window. That is not what this is, I do not believe.

The successful businessman ploy seemed to lead to 50 shades parody, adding on with the makeup in the VHS letsplay. However, something is odd. 

Alien Suprise. The name of that picture. 

Set that aside, we see Mark’s suit all torn up. Only the jacket. Everything else is clean and proper. Not a single bruise or cut. A liar, perhaps. 

Let’s have a look at his tweets.

This backs up my sister’s theory on a parody of John Wick. Something about a man who loses his dog and now murders people? Unsure myself, I need to see the movie.

But that doesn’t explain the jelly on his face. I originally thought lewd, but my mind has changed. The picture’s name does however make me think of some Alien movie parody, something romantic with Amy. Since Valentines day and all and her love for aliens.

But why the fucking jelly? Why the feared expression? Why the “shitty business man” thing? Why the jail?

Fraud? Gang related shit?

This is a real stretch, but the jelly made me think of a particular trap from SAW. The flamable jelly trap… Where our protaginist Mark (YES THE GUY’S NAME IS MARK), is a lying man who feigns illness and ends up getting burned to death. A stretch and most likly a coincidence, but something nonetheless.
