the only reason i'm doing this is because i relate to it

LGBT representation in the media
  • My mother: (homophobically) Are there any shows these days that don't have gay people in it?
  • Me: Biting my tongue back because I could go into a whole rant about how underrepresented the LGBT community is in television and how when we ARE represented it's either stereotypical Gay Best Friends, or good looking, cis, gay white boys. I could tell her that all of it is usually blatant gross fan service and Hollywood throwing the dog a bone, and I could tell her that The Straights are freaking EVERYWHERE and since we've all been doomed to watch them fall into sappy repetitive overly dramatic cliched insta love over and over again in every.movie.and.tv.show.ever the least she could do is not be homophobic while the boyfriends in this show get their 30 seconds worth of allotted screen time (that was only given, in the first place, because Hollywood feel like they have no other choice but to be 'politically correct')
  • So I need backup here to show her.
  • Can you all PLEASE like and reblog the shit out of this post if you agree that the LGBT community on a whole is grossly mistreated and actually, contrary to what she may think, very underrepresented in the media.

  • It has been brought to my attention that I shouldn't use shipping tags on posts like these. I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused by that. It won't happen again! 😊
  • For an explination, though, the reason I tagged ships on this is because I figured you all would understand/relate to what I was trying to say.
Basically, This is Basically What Every Dr. Phil Episode is Basically Like Basically
  • Dr. Phil: Hello, I am Doctor Philip, and today we'll be tackling an issue that is very widespread, but rarely spoken about. Gaming addiction. Now, I know many of you know at least one person in your life who plays video games, whether that be a child or, in some cases, a spouse.
  • Audience: *laughs*
  • Dr. Phil: But, when unregulated, gaming can lead to serious addiction. Today I have with me a mother who's home life has been torn apart as her very own son descended into gaming addiction.
  • Mother: *sniffing and wiping tears away* Hello, doctor. Will you cure my son?
  • Dr. Phil: Well, dear, that's... uhh. Let's just bring the boy out already.
  • *dramatic music plays*
  • Gamer: My name is Gregg, I'm 19 years old, I'm a gaming addict, and I don't give a f*ck.
  • Audience: *gasps*
  • Gamer: Yeah, I game for 19 to 20 hours a day and the other four hours I use for looking up sick gaming strats or beating it to anime porn. I once sucked off a dude because he offered me minecraft diamonds. I don't give a sh*t, I would've sucked him off even if he didn't have the diamonds.
  • Audience: *gasps louder*
  • Gamer: Do I hate women? Yes, I hate women. I've emailed Anita Sarkeesian my address. She knows where I am if she wants to fight me. Feminists, square the fuck up. People always ask why I don't do anything other than gaming. I ask them why don't they mind their own f*cking business. I don't think I have a problem. Dr. Phil can honestly eat my whole an*s.
  • Gamer: *walks out onto the stage*
  • Audience: *boos*
  • Gamer: F*ck all y'all! I don't give a f*ck! *flips off the audience*
  • Dr. Phil: Please take a seat, son.
  • Gamer: *sits very disrespectfully*
  • Mother: *starts bawling*
  • Dr. Phil: Son, do you think that was acceptable behavior?
  • Gamer: The only behavior I care about is the behavioral patterns for enemies in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. I love video games: Master chief, Mario, uhm, Blinx the Cat... Blasto. Love those guys!
  • Audience: *boos*
  • Gamer: I don't care! You think I care! F*ck all y'all!
  • Dr. Phil: All these people are booing you, doesn't that make you feel bad?
  • Gamer: Are you deaf? Have I not articulated the fact that I absolutely 100% do not care about anything except for video games? I. DON'T. GIVE. A. F*CK.
  • Mother: He's always like this, there's no changing him. It didn't used to be this way... just *starts bawling harder*
  • Dr. Phil: I think there is a way to change him, and we'll find out more about that after these messages.
  • *Dr. Phil theme plays*
  • *The lights dim and every goes empty eyed and slack-jawed*
  • Gamer: Heh, this is weird. *nudges mom and whispers to her* Hey, we're getting paid for this, right. Hey, mom? ...Mom?
  • Mother: *completely unresponsive*
  • Dr. Phil: *completely unresponsive*
  • Audience: *completely unresponsive*
  • Gamer: Heh... this is REALLY weird. *looks around nervously*
  • Audience member: Hey!
  • Gamer: Huh?
  • Audience Member: I'm in the audience! Over here! My arms are strapped to the chair! You have to help me!
  • Gamer: *runs to the audience member*
  • Audience Member: Thank god, I thought I was the only one here left with any brains.
  • Gamer: *hastily undoing the straps* What the fuck is going on?
  • Audience Member: I don't know, but this definitely isn't Dr. Phil's show.
  • Gamer: Then what is it?
  • Audience Member: No clue, but we have to get out of here before the commercial breaks ends.
  • Gamer: *successfully undoes the straps*
  • Audience Member: C'mon! Let's go. *grabs the gamer by the arm*
  • Gamer: *resists* Wait a fucking minute. Why am I supposed to trust you?
  • Audience Member: Because I'm normal and everyone else is braindead if you haven't noticed.
  • Gamer: Yeah, but I'm not going anywhere until I know what's going on. Being on Dr. Phil is a huge opportunity for me to, y'know, advertise my brand. I'm a gamer if you haven't noticed.
  • Audience Member: Are you insane? Have you had a look around you? Does this anything happening right now seem normal to you? Who cares about your "brand". Do you even remember how you got here?
  • Gamer: Well... now that you mention, I can't really remember exactly.
  • Audience Member: Yeah, now let's get the fuck out of here.
  • *the gamer and audience member run through the back exit into the hallways*
  • *the Dr. Phil theme blares as the show returns from commercial break*
  • Gamer: My ears!
  • Audience Member: Move it! *jerks gamer's arm*
  • Gamer: Okay, calm down.
  • *the entire audience screams in unison*
  • Gamer: What the fuck is that!?
  • Audience Member: It's the reason we're running! Quick, in here!
  • *the duo duck into a cramped broom closest*
  • Gamer: Listen, you have to tell me what the fuck is going on right now!
  • Audience Member: Shh.
  • Gamer: Don't shush me!
  • Audience Member: *covers the gamer's mouth*
  • *agonized screaming and violently rumbling passes by the broom closest*
  • Gamer: Holy shit!
  • Audience Member: Stop yelling.
  • Gamer: How can I not yell when it sounds the gates of hell just passed by us!
  • Audience Member: You want it to turn back around and find us?
  • Gamer: Alright. I'll calm down... I'll. *start sobbing*
  • Audience Member: Please, please stop crying. You're too loud.
  • Gamer: I can't! I'm under a lot of stress!
  • Audience Member: You'll be dead if you don't shut the fuck.
  • Gamer: I never wanted any of this, I just wanted to go on Dr. Phil so people would recognize me on YouTube and I could become a popular Let's Player!
  • Audience Member: If you don't shut up right now, I'll-
  • *a snake bites the audience member's neck*
  • Audience Member: *eyes roll up*
  • Gamer: *screams like a baby*
  • *snakes slither under the closet door*
  • Gamer: *stumbles out of the closet and falls into hallway covered with snakes* Fuck me! Fuck me!
  • Gamer: *attempts to run away but falls beneath the snakes and into and empty void*
  • *agonized screaming echoes from all around*
  • Gamer: Am I in hell? I have to be in hell. You don't fall through a pool of snakes and wind up anywhere else but hell.
  • Dr. Phil: THERE IS NO HELL.
  • Gamer: Doc, is that you? If this isn't hell then where am I?
  • Dr. Phil: YOU'RE IN MY REALM SON. *Dr. Phil's face appears glowing in the distance, his eyes are empty sockets and his mouth hangs open*
  • Gamer: What the fuck are you?
  • Dr. Phil: I'M DOCTOR PHILIP.
  • Gamer: You're not Dr. Phil!
  • Dr. Phil: I NEVER SAID I WAS, SON. *a wall of gray human bodies lights up surrounding Dr. Phil's massive head, dr. phil's giant snake body slithers towards the gamer and opens its third eye* I'M DOCTOR PHILIP.
  • *the wall of bodies screams in unison as Dr. Phil devours the gamer*
  • *Dr. Phil theme plays loudly*
  • Dr. Phil: THE NEXT EPISODE IS STARTING. I'M LATE. *slithers into the wall of bodies and his snake body slowly transforms into a normal Dr. Phil's body*
  • Dr. Phil: *crawls onto the stage*
  • Dr. Phil: *dusts himself off* Woo, I went on quite an adventure.
  • Audience: *laughs*
  • Dr. Phil: I'm glad we can all find some time in our lives to laugh, but today's episode is covering something that is most certainly not a laughing matter. It's one of the most serious addictions striking America today and it's rarely talked about. I'm talking about people who love to pee on their mattresses and then pay people exorbitant amounts of money to suck their disgusting mattresses clean.
  • Audience: ... *someone clears their throat*
  • Dr. Phil: What's the matter?
  • Cameraguy: Spsss, Doc. That's not what the episode is about. It's about people with terrible gambling issues.
  • Dr. Phil: Oh, ah, fuck! Cut to commercial!

okay i know Hardeen was a Terrible arc for everyone involved, but what if Obi Wan had told Anakin about faking his death? Anakin’s like no worries dude I Got This, except he really. does not,,

the only reason his “acting” is remotely believable is because almost no one has seen him like this before, so it must be due to all the grief and loss and heartbreak and anger and whatnot

he starts by sobbing over Obi Wan’s supposedly dead body for a solid two hours when Obi gets shot down. “LOOK at him, so cold and Lifeless. D: HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE WARM AND FULL OF LIFE, SNIPS. I know last week I checked his pulse because he was meditating so calmly I thought he passed away in his sleep, BUT HE’S USUALLY SO WARM AND FULL OF LIFE.”

It goes on until Anakin has finished everything on his painstakingly written Outline from last night. At least half of Coruscant hears part of this speech. Mace sends Obi the security footage later, at a time he knows Anakin will be there to sit through it with Obi, because if we had to suffer then you do too, Obi Wan.

then at the funeral, Anakin pulls out a twenty foot scroll of real actual paper, because he would appreciate this, I think, and clears his throat loudly and messily before telling the council that he has prepared a few words for the greatest jedi this order, nay, this GALAXY has ever seen, and will ever see, no matter how long any of us live—

five hours later,, he’s still going strong. half the eulogy is Terrible and V Cringeworthy, but the other half is actually v heartfelt and moving. even Mace and Yoda have to blink away some tears.

it becomes easier after Anakin starts going into Unnecessary Details about obi wan’s life, like how he’ll miss holding onto those heavy 327 thread count woolen robes when he’s saving obi’s ass (curvature 48.5 degrees) for the 23094th time, and how he’ll never see a more sincere expression of Compassion than he saw when reading line 83 of Obi Wan’s eighth letter to Duchess Satine last month, quoted now as follows—

Ahsoka enlists Plo Koon’s help and they finally shuffle him over to the side, promising him they can finish his fake eulogy at the council dinner tonight. Obi Wan’s death may be fake, but MY WORDS ARE REAL, SNIPS, HOW DARE YOU. says Anakin, before he (a little gleefully) starts destroying the walls to show how Emotionally Compromised he is over this 100% real death.

he takes the 212th drinking, after having told all of them, too. so now there are 293637 men crying about Obi Wan (relatable af, y/y), all of which have the acting talent of a wilted blade of grass. there are 283747 toasts, and every single person there cries for each and every one of them, despite everyone knowing obi is still alive

Jieun’s Personality + theory on her purpose

So there’s a lot of buzz surrounding Jieun, her personality, and her ultimate fate after chapter 18. In terms of her potential death, it’s a huge probability she won’t live, there’s really no reason for her to stay alive much longer. Now what’s always interested me is how much of chapter 15 and 16 were dedicated to her background and even her own thoughts and internal dialogue. I don’t think Jieun will just be another unfortunate victim of Sangwoo.

A good portion of this post is going to be dedicated to taking a better look at Jieun’s personality in relation to Sangwoo, I won’t go into her treatment of Bum because that’s been hashed out tons of times by now. So there’s Sangwoo’s infamous speech about how she’s shallow and only into appearances, and while it was very intense and elaborate, I have plenty of reason to believe that he was wrong and only spoke so much to make a half assed justification for killing her. Let’s look at some parts of his dialogue:

So Sangwoo is the type of person to use any excuse to kill anyone, it doesn’t matter what they do. The first girl he killed because he felt she challenged his ego, Sangwoo said he killed the old man because he stuck his dick in his face, and now Jieun is about to die because he says she doesn’t deserve anyone for cursing people who don’t look good. It doesn’t matter to Sangwoo whether or not he’s wrong but, he’s kind of wrong.

This is our introduction to Jieun, the first impression of her is that she seems to be bored with being told she’s hot, it’s a reasonable assumption that she’s frequently told that she’s beautiful. She’s the kind of person that didn’t put much effort into anything because she’s never had to try. Things are handed to her for being so pretty, and it’s actually gotten old for her at this point

But then here she is, putting effort into her appearance, getting out of her way and actually trying to look good for Sangwoo. He is clearly special to her just by this small action. Although initially she wasn’t interested in him.

Here is more insight into Jieun’s mind and how she used to perceive Sangwoo, she wasn’t interested in his appearance, but they began to hang out more and she was swept away by the persona he created. When they were singing their duet, there was a montage of moments between them that she was reflecting on. It’s very clear she’s developed feelings for him, not based solely off of his looks, but because of how he treated her as well. Jieun gets flustered when Sangwoo says she’s pretty, not because of the compliment of being told she’s pretty, but because it’s coming from him.

Now given that Jieun has had a decent amount of time dedicated to her personality, thoughts, and even some development, what does this mean for her purpose in the story? She’s been given more attention than Sangwoo’s other murder victims, it would be a waste if she was just killed and never heard from again.

My personal belief is that Jieun will become a martyr of sorts, she has the ability to be the catalyst for Sangwoo being caught. Jieun is within his social circle, and Sangwoo was the last person she was in contact with. It wouldn’t take too much work to connect the two together (maybe her going missing would even bring back Seungbae into the plot). And if she did become the key to Sangwoo’s downfall, then that would almost be as satisfying as when she punched Sangwoo in the eye.

Hi! This blog is a life saver haha! I have a little question; I'm going to be looking for apartments soon and it's my first time ever being away from home,,, is there anything I should look out for in general? Thank you!

Hey I’m so glad I’m helping! I have been meaning to write a post of this nature for a long time, so thank you for asking. Here. We. Go.

Apartment Hunting 101

Overview: There’s no getting around it, apartment hunting is a stressful process. The waiting and wondering gets the best of everyone, so give yourself a break and remember not to be too hard on yourself. The more prepared and decisive you are, the better off you’ll be!

1. Step One: The most important step in this entire process is coming up with your list of “Need and Won’t”. This list can always be adjusted in the spur of the moment, but will act as a baseline to help you easily disregard impractical apartments. Before you even start your search, sit down with any roommates (SO or otherwise) and come up with a list. Here is my list:

  • Need: Dishwasher, pet friendly, heat included.
  • Won’t: First floor apartment, all or mostly carpeted apartment, no closet space.

2. Step Two: Decide your price range. The paycheck to paycheck life is not a great one to live, so try to find an apartment that still allows you to put anywhere from $100-$500 into savings every month. Figure out how much you make monthly, with taxes taken out. If you’re paid every other week, this is two paychecks. If you’re paid every week, this is four paychecks. Start with your total monthly income, and subtract the following expenses. Let’s say you make $1,000 with taxes taken out:

  • Rent - Let’s say you’re living with a roommate, and your rent is only $500 per month.
  • Electric - My electric expense is $60 a month for a one bedroom. Once again, you’re living with a roommate so let’s say that you pay half of that. $30.
  • Internet - $30 a month internet only. Please don’t waste your money on cable. Just use your mom’s Netflix account.
  • Travel expenses - I spend about $85 a month on gas. Let’s say you use public transportation and spend around $100.
  • Food - Figure you’ll be spending $100 per person each month. So that’s another $100.
  • Misc expense: Let’s just add an additional $50 worth of expenses on. Because you never know what’ll happen.

That leaves you $130 a month extra to put in savings or to use in the event of an emergency! That’s awesome. Substitute your own numbers in, and figure out how much you can afford for rent. Immediately disregard any apartments that do not fit in this budget.

3. Step Three: The best way to find dependable apartments is to consult with your fellow apartment renters. Consult with coworkers, friends, family- anyone who is currently renting in the area that you would like to rent in. Get the inside scoop on potential apartments, both their advantages and their pitfalls. If you don’t know anyone who is renting where you’d like to rent, here are some other apartment hunting options:

  • Craigslist: Obviously
  • Drive-bys: Literally drive around until you find a cool looking apartment complex. Find their rental office and go right in, this is how I found my first apartment.
  • Your college: The Dean’s Office will have a list of apartment offerings to give kids who don’t qualify for on-campus housing.
  • This Site: A list of the top ranked apartment hunting sites.

4. Set up an appointment: After finding a potential apartment, consult with the landlord or apartment representative to set up a date and time to see the apartment. Respond promptly to any email or phone call they leave for you. On the flip side, if they aren’t prompt in their response to you RUN.

The first apartment I ever looked at, my boyfriend and I showed up on time and the landlord wasn’t there. We called her and she said that she was running late, and told us that the apartment was open and we could show ourselves inside. Serious red flag, but we gave it the benefit of the doubt and went in. Long story short, she never showed up. She gave us a tour of the apartment over the phone and kept saying that she was five minutes away, but never came. We later found out that her rental office was two minutes from the apartment we looked at. Talk about flakey! We told her we weren’t interested, if she can’t even show up to show us the apartment, how the hell can we depend on her to fix any problems we might have? Because you’re young and inexperienced, some landlords will try to give you the run around. Your age is no concern of their’s, and has no bearing on how you will act as a tenant. Here are some red flags for flaky landlords:

  • Not contacting you within one day of leaving them a message. Disregarding the weekends.
  • Not showing up when they say they will.
  • Repeatedly telling you that you’re “young” or “inexperienced”.
  • Telling you that the apartment “is good for college kids” or “a good first apartment” (that just means it’s a shit hole).
  • If they tell you that the apartment has a large turnover (people are leaving for a reason).
  • If you speak with one person on the phone, and meet a different person who shows you the apartment.
  • If they can’t or refuse to give you the exact rent amount.
  • If they tell you that have to “run some numbers” based on your history. An apartment’s rent should be the same for everybody.
  • If they can’t answer basic questions about service providers for the apartment.
  • If you get a weird vibe from them. Listen to your intuition! This is the person who is going to be responsible for fixing all your apartment related problems, you will be dealing with them every month at least. If they seem unreliable, don’t sign the lease!

5. Step Five: Find your appointment buddy! Never, ever, EVER go to look at a potential apartment by yourself. I don’t care how friendly Wendy seems online, she may be a serial killer. There’s no way to tell. Here’s a list of people who can accompany you:

  • Your older brother
  • Your boyfriend/girlfriend
  • Your Aunt Meredith
  • Your second cousin
  • Your friend who can scream really loudly
  • Your Mother
  • Your Step Mother
  • Your old nosey neighbor who smells like cats
  • Literally anyone you can trust

Bribe them with chocolate, I don’t care. Take someone with you! If you absolutely cannot find anyone to go with you, then you need to take additional precautions. Here are some options:

  • Kitestring
  • “Share My Location” on your Iphone
  • Pepper Spray
  • Posting to Facebook the address you are going to and when you are expected to arrive and leave.
  • Rescheduling your appointment to a date and time when you can be accompanied

Checklist

A mental checklist is good in theory, but will you remember it when you’re actually at the prospective apartment with your Aunt Meredith? I think not! Make a physical list of some of the following points, and feel free to add your own. my list is super extensive, but that’s just who I am. I am detail oriented.

Tuck this list in your back pocket and consult it when the person showing you the apartment is not looking.

Expense related

  • How much is the rent?
  • Is the rent just the rent, or are there any amenities included? Some apartments include heat, hot water, or electric expenses.
  • Is hot water included (if the apartment has a washer/dryer in it, then the water is probably a separate expense)?
  • What Internet service providers are available?
  • What electric service providers are available?
  • Do I have to pay for garbage removal?
  • What is the average electric expense that other renters deal with?
  • Ask when rent is due. Find out what the rent check procedure is.

Basic

  • What type of heating/cooling is provided?
  • What appliances are in the kitchen? *If there is no oven or fridge and you are required to buy your own then run*
  • What is the apartment complex turnover rate?
  • Do you have a choice of carpet vs. hard wood floors?
  • Will window blinds be provided? *If the apartment complex won’t pay for something as simple as window blinds then the landlord is a cheapskate and can’t be trusted*
  • Is there a “curfew”? Most apartments have a time of night when all the tenants are supposed to be quiet. This is generally not enforced.
  • What will your address be?

Additional

  • Is any furniture included?
  • Is there a Laundromat in the complex? If not where is the closest one?
  • Similarly, is the Laundromat in the complex card operated or quarter operated? Do you have to pay a fee for the card? Is there a quarter dispensing machine?
  • Will you be given a free parking permit? *If parking is not free then run*
  • Ask about local shopping and gas stations.
  • Ask where your mailbox will be.
  • Ask what their pet policy is. (some apartment complexes charge an fee)
  • Ask what their policy on repainting/decorating is.
  • Ask what their maintenance request policy is.
  • Ask where the nearest dumpster is.
  • How often does the complex loose power?
  • Is there a nearby police station or fire department?

General check

  • Check all cabinets (for bug infestations or mouse droppings or that they open properly).
  • Open all the windows and check to see that there are screens installed. Especially important for us cat owners! If there are no screens- are they going to install screens before you move in?
  • Check that all the light switches work.
  • Check that the water turns on.
  • Flush the toilet.
  • Check all the closet space (for size, mold, and water damage).
  • Check how all the doors are set (some apartments will put doors in incorrectly and they’ll never close properly).
  • Check the outlets (bring a phone chord and plug it in).
  • Check any balcony access.
  • Take a look at the paint- is it chipped? Is it stained? Will they be repainting?
  • Knock on the walls to see how hollow they are (hollow walls require studs if you want to hang anything up).
  • Open up the oven and make sure it’s clean. If it’s not clean make it clear that it should be cleaned if you want to move into the apartment. It’s not your job to clean up after the previous tenant.
  • Check that none of the floorboards are sticking up/creaking.
  • Check for nails and screws in between hardwood floor, tile and carpet (I’m not even kidding).
  • Check your phone to see how much cell service you have.
  • Can you hear any neighbors? Could you hear them in the hallway?

Final Decision

If the apartment you visited fits all your criteria, feel free to tell the landlord that you’re interested in pursuing this apartment. This way they can advise you of the next steps. Before you sign ANYTHING, visit the apartment complex twice more to make sure that everything is kosher. Do NOT tell the landlord that you will be coming by.

  • During the day: Do a drive-by of your prospective apartment to see what it looks like during the day. Is it safe? Are there lots of people standing around outside? Is it loud?
  • During the night: Come back another night to check the safety of your apartment. Ask yourself- would I feel comfortable taking the trash out late at night? Having friends over? If the answer is “no” then run…

sharkie-heart  asked:

Hi there! I'm not sure if you've answered something similar to this, but I'm wanting to write an autistic character. She's very severe, and has trouble communicating (slurred speech), her personality is also very spacey and oblivious. Any tips, or things to learn about writing an autistic character when I myself am not autistic? Thank you! Take your time!

Thanks for your question, love!  I apologize for the wait, but I’m happy to finally get to answer this :)

So first, I’ve got a a note on what you’ve described about your character.  For one thing, it’s preferred among most autistic people that there be no “sliding scale” of severity – because there are so many different symptoms and combinations of symptoms, and “severity” seems to only relate to symptoms that bother allistic people most.  Here’s a masterpost on how to handle this topic.

So now that this is out of the way, here are my official tips for writing autistic characters!

How to Write Autistic Characters

So it took me some time to prepare for this question, primarily because I saw so little information out there for writing about autism!  And that’s understandable, since it’s such a complex topic – after all, no two autistic people have exactly the same symptoms and coping mechanisms.  Plus, since autism is basically a top-to-bottom different living experience, it’s difficult for allistics to identify with.

But I’m going to discuss this in a few different parts: symptoms, coping mechanisms, positive qualities, and stereotypes to avoid.  I’ll try to keep it as brief as possible without sparing any information :)

Symptoms of Autism

There are many different symptoms of autism, although the mental/emotional aspects of the disorder is most often overlooked by the general public.  It’s important to recognize that every autistic person’s experience and symptoms are different.  Some people have few social problems but they can’t handle the sensory experience of a restaurant; some have few physical problems, but they struggle with OCD and can’t maintain a conversation.  The only difference between symptoms is that some are talked about and some are not, which makes them seem “uncommon.”

Physical Symptoms

  • Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) – SPD is defined as the struggle to process different sensory input – visual, auditory, tactile, taste, olfactory, proprioception, vestibular and interoception.  SPD causes hyper- or hyposentitivities to certain sensory stimuli (e.g. certain clothing textures, food textures, scents, and lighting – especially fluorescent lighting.  Ugh.)
  • Dyspraxia – A result of SPD, dyspraxia makes it difficult to control one’s physical movement.  It creates problems with planning and executing actions, as well as speaking or judging spacial proximity.
  • Sleep Disorder – Many autistic people struggle with sleeping for various reasons – hypersensitivity seems to be the greatest cause.  Offensive sheet fabric, noises, or lighting can cause sleep problems, as well as racing thoughts or anxiety.
  • Lack of Energy (or Spoons) – Often caused by sleep problems or SPD, a lack of energy intensifies normal symptoms.  Understand that when an autistic person engages in a stressful or energy-consuming experience (prolonged socialization, insomnia, bad sensory environments, anxiety, etc.)
  • Nonverbal Communication – This type of communication is used by nearly one-third of autistic people, either because they aren’t able to use language in a meaningful way, because it requires an excessive amount of mental/social energy, or because they suffer from a learning disability.  Some people go temporarily nonverbal in times of stress to conserve energy.  Most nonverbal autistic people learn other means of communication, like writing, sign language, or scripting/echolalia.

Mental Symptoms

  • Executive Dysfunction – This dysfunction makes it difficult for some autistic people to start, finish, and quit tasks; to make decisions and switch activities; and/or create, organize, and follow through with plans.  This should not be confused with procrastination, as it is not a decision – it’s a result of low energy.
  • Alexithymia – Alexithymia can cause autistic people to struggle to identify their own emotions, or separate physical feelings from emotional feelings.  It’s closely tied with lowered interoception, which is defined as the struggle (or inability) to define and assess physical sensations like hunger, thirst, tension, etc.
  • Meltdowns – Meltdowns are an emotional response to overstimulation and stress, causing some autistic people to “lose control” of visceral emotional responses (e.g. shaking, kicking, crying, shouting, etc.).  There is another type of meltdown called a shutdown, which causes an opposite reaction: dissociation and lack of external response.  It’s a flight reaction rather than a fight reaction.
  • Increased Likelihood for Other Mental Disorders – Since the world isn’t exactly built for autistic people, there are plenty of everyday challenges and stressors (as well as difficulty maintaining supportive relationships) that can cause other comorbid disorders, such as OCD, anxiety, and depression.
  • Learning Disability and Late Childhood Development – While autism itself is not classified as a learning disability, it’s often comorbid with different types of learning disabilities.  Autism can also cause late development of speech and motor skills, among other things.

Social Symptoms

  • Hyperempathy or Low Empathy – On two ends of the spectrum, autistic people often struggle with the “right balance” of empathy – being either unable to identify, express, and empathize with emotions, or unable to shut off or control their own emotions as well as to separate themselves from other people’s emotions.
  • Impulsive Behavior – Because of a (sometimes) weak understanding of social rules and/or imbalanced empathy, an autistic person may struggle to stop and think before they say or do something impulsively.  This can cause interpersonal issues, as impulsive speech may offend or hurt others, while impulsive actions may feel too “out-of-control” or “hard to manage” for loved ones.
  • Difficulty Interpreting or Expressing Social Cues – Autistic people often struggle to understand facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, sarcasm, flirting, or figures of speech – and because of this, they can often come off as “oblivious” or “simple” (although this is inaccurate and contributes to a lot of misrepresentation).  It can also be difficult to express social cues, which is why some autistic people can appear to be awkward, clingy, aloof, or uninterested in friendship/romance.
  • Social Anxiety – Social situations can be especially stressful for autistic people, due to the amount of thinking it requires – to interpret cues, to “pass” as allistic, to express themselves clearly, to curb impulses, to handle sensory challenges – and this leads to social anxiety.
  • Social Isolation – As a result of social anxiety, some autistic people experience isolation, as they may feel more comfortable in their own environment, alone.  This is an unfortunate result of ableist culture, and may be worsened by executive dysfunction which can make it difficult to reach out to others.
  • Struggle with Change – Whether in routine, environment, appearance, or the natural changes of life (such as graduation, moving, marriage, death in the family, new job, etc.), change can cause great stress for some autistic people.  This is why many autistic people enjoy comfort objects, old music, childhood memories/interests, or specific, consistent colors, styles, or textures for their belongings.

Coping Mechanisms for Autistic People

There are many methods of coping with the negative aspects of autism, but there are a few that are most popular:

  • Behavioral & Occupational Therapy – Therapy (often combined with medication) is a continuous process of reducing symptoms, coping with stressors, and learning how to function in an allistic world.  (The most common method of behavioral therapy, ABA, has reports of being abusive, so be mindful of this if you’re researching/writing about therapy!)
  • Stimming – “Stimming” or self-stimulating is a physical coping mechanism for sensory overload and similar stress.  Stimming can be healthy or unhealthy depending on the action involved (some unhealthy stims include skin-peeling or hitting one’s head), and it can be conscious or subconscious.  It’s often seen as “weird” or “bad” by allistics (especially parents), so some autistic people train themselves out of the habit from a young age.
  • Special Interests – Special interests are half a coping mechanism and half a natural part of autistic people’s lifestyles.  It’s defined as a devoted interest to one or two subjects or activities – special interests can reduce stress, help focus, and provide motivation against executive dysfunction.

Positive Qualities of Autism

Now that we’ve gotten all the bad stuff out of the way, I’m gonna list a few common positive qualities of autistic people.  Remember that these do not apply to all autistic people, but may be a natural consequence of autistic traits:

  • Determination
  • Dedication
  • Divergence (from trends and social expectations)
  • Passion
  • Honesty
  • Uncritical nature
  • Attention to detail
  • Good memory
  • Logical reasoning
  • Active imagination
  • Integrity
  • Understanding of what it’s like to be judged or left out
  • Skilled with children

Autistic people, of course, have many other great qualities, and may struggle with many of the above.  Creating a character with all these qualities will yield you a stereotype, so be mindful!

Stereotypes of Autistic People

Finally, there are a few popular stereotypes of autistic characters, which should be avoided at all costs:

  • Autistic People are Psychic – We get this courtesy of shows like Touch, where the (usually nonverbal) autistic child suddenly starts speaking because they see ghosts or are somehow connected to “another world”.  Autistic people joke about themselves being “aliens”… but allistic people really shouldn’t.
  • Autistic People Need Caretakers – While some autistic people do struggle to manage their lives alone, it’s a pretty harmful stereotype in media considering the lack of positive representation autistic people get.  Plenty of autistic people (whether you consider them high- or low-functioning) lead successful lives on their own, and they deserve representation.
  • Autistic People are Burdens – The most stereotypical portrayal of autistic people is that they are the weight pulling on their parents’ ankles – that they destroy parents’ sex lives and make teachers crazy and their friends need a “night off” from their autistic friends.
  • Autistic People are Childlike – While many autistic people enjoy activities geared toward children, and while meltdowns can resemble an allistic child’s temper tantrum, autistic people are not childish or unintelligent.  Autistic adults are adults, no matter their struggles.
  • Autistic People Look Different – Autistic people don’t all look a certain way from birth – this is a myth that has been debunked time and time again, the same way that the Vaccines Cause Autism myth has been debunked, time and time again.  Don’t perpetuate these myths in your writing.
  • Autistic People are Like Robots – Autistic people may not express their feelings well, but they have feelings.  Being nonverbal, being dissociative, being aloof or awkward – none of these things make an autistic person unfeeling or non-human.  Be mindful to show the emotional side of your autistic character, even if they struggle to express it to others.

Resources for Researching Autism

A lot of these are courtesy of @anonymusauthorin, whom I thank very much for her information and deep connection to the autistic community!

  • Ballastexistenz’s blog (on her personal experience with multiple disabilities and autism). [NSFW language]
  • Yes, That Too (blog on the personal experience of an autistic person with other neurodivergencies).
  • Aspects of Aspergers (specifically about Asperger’s, which is now called Autism Spectrum Disorder).
  • Disability in Kid Lit (discussions of disability representation in children’s/YA literature).
  • @scriptautistic is an active advice blog for writing about autism.
  • @autism-asks is an active blog that takes questions about autism.
  • @undiagnosedautismfeels is an active blog that receives submitted anecdotes about autistic struggles, some specific to being undiagnosed/self-diagnosed.
  • @autisticheadcanons is an active blog that receives submissions of characters that actual autistic people headcanon as autistic.  You can find some common submissions (e.g. Lilo Pelekai, Newt Scamander, Sherlock Holmes) and check them out for examples!

Final Note: You may notice that none of these links are affiliated with Autism Speaks, which is for a purpose.  Autism Speaks has a long history of promoting eugenics, abusing autistic children and adolescents, silencing the voice of actual autistics, and promoting a “find a cure” narrative that’s harmful to the minds of both autistic people and potential parents of autistic children.  When doing research, I’d advise you to refrain from using their resources.

Anyway, this was hugely long but I wanted to really go into it, since I didn’t see many other extensive guides on writing about autism.  Note that while I, myself, am autistic, this is only the perspective of one autistic person.  Either way, I hope this helps you with your character!  If you have any further questions, my inbox is open and waiting :)

Good luck!

Small dump of random ideas I have on improving Fates’ plot in general

Because I’ve had these ideas for quite a while now, and it’s extremely unlikely that I get around to doing anything with them any time soon.

  • An explanation of what Valla actually is: My idea is that it was originally an entire country between Hoshido and Nohr, at the place where during the main story the Bottomless Canyon is. When Anankos went mad and rampaged, the magic energy involved created a rift between Hoshido and Nohr in the form of the canyon, while transporting Valla into this “floating island dimension”.
  • Explaining how the royal families of Hoshido and Nohr came to be/got their “dragon blood”: The divine dragons of Hoshido and Nohr (y’know, the ones depicted in the statues) could for example have chosen to permanently assume a mortal human form instead of risking to go insane like Anankos. They could have founded the royal families.
  • Replace the curse on Valla with something else: Instead of causing everybody who talks about Valla to “disappear” for vague reasons, they curse could cause everybody not from Valla simply constantly forget about it whenever they mention it (unless they’re IN Valla). For the main story, this’d mean that Azura and the avatar are the only characters capable of remembering the place because of their heritage.
    • In the backstory, this curse could be justified by the people of Valla starting the curse to prevent Hoshido and Nohr from attacking them - ‘cause let’s face it, having Anankos do that kind of rampage would mean that Hoshido and Nohr would damn well want to kill him.
  • Give Mikoto a bigger role by having her actually live past the prologue chapters: If those first couple of chapters are really kept the same, she could just fall into a ~~magical coma~~ from which she’d wake up either halfway or towards the end of the game, so that she only sees what the avatar decided on a while after it happened.
  • Give Garon a better role: Namely, don’t make him an undead slime monster, and let him act like an actual person instead of a generic villain. He could for example be still alive and well in theory, but at the same time be corrupted/possessed by Anankos.
    • On that note, the entire dynamic between Garon and Iago could be like that Theoden and Grima in Lord of the Rings, in that Iago is a servant of Anankos who’s making sure that Garon is under his control.
    • And related to the above, Yukimura could be repurposed into a villain another servant of Anankos on the side of Hoshido with Kotaro as his lackey. That could also help Hoshido being less of a “~~uwu sweet cinnamon peace nation~~* and be more morally even with Nohr.
      • On a rewritten Conquest, Yukimura could also basically lead Hoshido into war under the guise of acting on Mikoto’s orders.
  • Give the sisters legendary weapons.
    • Seriously, just do it.
    • I don’t give a shit if that means that the Yato’d have to have eight traffic lights on it for being powered up by each individual one, just do it.
    • Camilla wouldn’t even have to get an original one, she could just inherit Bölverk from Garon with the story noting that Xander originally was supposed to get it, but Garon saw that he was shit with axes while Camilla was great with them, so she got it instead.

Even in a world of heroes Los Santos is too corrupt for any true good to prosper. The Supers who come to fight the good fight soon fall, retreating from an unwinnable battle, being brutally murdered and made public warning or, worse, plunging fast and hard into the ever growing ranks of villainy that rule the city. And really, is there anything more dangerous than a villain with a cause? A baddie with all the self-entitled righteousness of a former hero, the taste for glory, for public deference, for power.

It’s not like there are rules, no handbook for the Powered to follow, checkboxes for being good vs being evil, no set destiny determining that one must be one or the other but things always seem to play out in the same way. Humans aren’t half as complex as they’d like to believe, all follow the same broad paths sooner or later; the ones who hide themselves away, the ones who take what they want, and the ones who think to stand up and protect their idea of justice.

When the Powered came into the public eye there was fear, jealously, there were calls to register, to lock up the powerful, demands to go to any extreme to ensure the protection of the Non-powered. Not all Powers are equal, for every terrifyingly notable gift there are dozens of negligible abilities, little more than party tricks or cosmetic changes, but most Non-powered didn’t care to see the difference. The lack of rhyme or reason scared them, the fact that unknown powers may have manifested in anyone from a childhood friend to a nephew, a nun to a super-max criminal, newfound supremacy with no regard for class or wealth. Many of the Powered were talented beyond belief, some stronger than anyone could deem reasonable, but the Non-powered would always have numbers and the ever reliable quality of hating anyone who was different.

Overall it was handled poorly, even in areas not screaming for imprisonment or execution, places where Powers were seen as gifts, amazing and awe-inspiring, society simply lacked adequate infrastructure to support so many new abilities. Prison cells were no longer adequately applicable to all people, some were now immune to necessary medicines, the limits of human weight and strength had gone out the window and airspace no longer belonged solely to machines. Worse though was the fact that there was nothing in place to protect the Powered from the hateful masses, nothing to help identify and channel the newly Powered into appropriate support and education programs, nothing to mitigate the growing tensions and unease. And, yes, nothing at all which could combat the inevitable pushback, fight off the onslaught of Powered coming for law-enforcement and society alike, not just actual criminals but also mismanaged children and the inescapable furious retribution from regular Powered when it all goes wrong.

It was a dark time, Powered persecuted without cause or mercy and Non-Powered constantly looking over their shoulders lest they be the target of rebel vengeance, a world-wide uproar which eventually gave rise to the Supers. Because there were of course Powered who believed in justice, who wanted to help, who stood up to stand up against their own kind when things got dire and led the charge to bring peace and understanding between Powered and Non.

So things eventually settle, an uneasy truce, but there will always be those who use their Powers for their own benefits, society be damned, just as there will always be the do-gooders using their Powers to police how others behave. It of course takes the general public no time at all to start referring to them as Heroes and Villains, the comparison too close to ignore despite the general lack of spandex, but there was never going to be such a clean division.

Clearly those who think it’s simply black or white have never had to define the Powered who were scouted for shady corporations or government wet work, never had to draw the line between political or military ‘heroes’ and vigilante ‘villains’. Clearly those people had never been to Los Santos, where the heroes could be just as bad, could be far, far worse, than the villains had any hope of being.

It’s all well and good for the villains in Los Santos, at least a while - better to have the heroes get on board than have them chasing you down and ruining your every plan -  but it’s getting a bit crowded to be honest. It’s hard to stretch your wings as a bad guy when there’s no one left to push back against, when on every job you trip over half a dozen bozos running their own gigs. When the levels of depravity some of these assholes stoop to start giving all the regular villains a bad name.

So, something has to be done, and if the good guys can’t hack it, the bad guys are going to have to. Or at least that’s how Ramsey sells it when he’s dragging a pack of semi-reluctant crooks together, cherry picking powers and personalities to build what will be an undeniably formidable crew so long as he can get them all onside. Considering Geoff’s gift of telepathy and thought implantation, limited though it may be, getting everyone to sign up and play nice with one another isn’t quite as difficult as one would expect.

Some of his choices are crooks he’s already worked with, Powers tried and tested, those who Geoff trusts more than anyone else on earth. Most notably of these are his ever faithful right hand, Jack, who manipulates wind and weather, and the ineffable Lindsay with her flaming wings. Then there’s Matt Bragg’s technological genius, Trevor’s ability to defy notice and walk unseen, Steffie’s unearthly level of multi-tasking and information analysis, and the host of loyal Powered friends they bring to the table.

Even the ringers who Geoff’s not actually trialled have been vigorously investigated, carefully selected from the hundreds of possible Powered criminals in Los Santos. He’d built up some rapport with the foreigner, Free, who’s been running with two other Powered, a little crew he won’t leave behind, not that Geoff actually wants him to. He was after Gavin’s power, inherent luck and the manipulation of probabilities an indispensable quality in his endeavour, but he’d be a fool not to snatch up Gavin’s friends while he’s at it. Jones with his control of heat, of fire and ice, and Dooley’s ability to change his own density at will makes the pair near indomitable in a fight, an unquestionably powerful duo to have in your corner. And last, but by no means least, was the terrible Vagabond, the corrupted healer who takes people apart from the inside out, a living nightmare even in Los Santos. Ryan was by far the hardest to win over to the cause, but once he’s in Geoff knows they’re golden.

It’s quite a line-up but even with that security there is no scattergun approach, Geoff’s done his homework, has villains and ex-heroes categorised by the danger their powers pose and the difficulty in taking them down. The first few jobs are so quick and ruthless the targets have no time to see them coming, to prepare proper defences, no chance to combat the array of abilities they’re faced with. From there word gets out, but while they lose the element of surprise they’re still in the unique position of being united; it’s so rare for those who are Powered to truly combine forces, rarer still in a group of more than two or three, and without any backstabbing or infighting Ramsey’s collection have found themselves to be near unstoppable.

Between them they have the best plans, horrifyingly efficient fighters, have infiltration, manipulation and extermination completely covered. Hell they even have a preternaturally skilful wheelman to get them all the hell out of dodge when things take a turn. Perhaps best of all, though, is the fact that to some degree they have the support of the city; law enforcement, struggling Supers and civilians alike, who’ve noticed this new group shaking up the powers that be in the underbelly of the city. Who might not all be actively helping but certainly aren’t hindering, stepping back and giving Geoff and his people free reign to finally fix up the wicked city.

So for a moment they are beacons, a spot of light pushing back the darkness in Los Santos, persevering where others have been crushed, relentless in their quest to take out the worst elements of the city. It is, of course, difficult to be swayed from the right path when you were never on it in the first place, can’t fall from grace when you never had any to start with. Ramsey’s gang seem invulnerable to the filth and corruption of Los Santos simply because the darkness was in them all along, their goals have never been anything close to altruistic.

Some still believe, see only what they have intentionally been shown, think Ramsey’s crew vigilantes, perhaps too harsh, too violent, but only out of necessity, the strong hand of justice the depraved city of sin has been crying out for. They think the attacks will cease once the city has been cleansed, cheer on their counterfeit champions right up until the moment they finally realise that they’ve been played, that Ramsey and his gang of reprobates will never be the good guys.

Because no matter what the idealists would like to believe, no matter what other crooks might sneer and spit, no one who’s paying attention could truly think Ramsey’s crew had gone light side, not by a long shot. They take down other villains, yes, but not in ways the so called good would approve of, not peacefully, not humanely, not even remotely quick, clean or painless. They take down other villains, sure, but for their own benefit, for their own power and greed, their own amusement. They take down other villains but they don’t spare the cops. They take down other villain’s but they aren’t saving civilians, aren’t restoring peace, they don’t return stolen goods or misappropriated funds, don’t seek to inspire children or bring safety back to the streets.

When all the Powered formidable enough to have half a chance of beating them have been overthrown, Ramsey and his crew are right there to see their plan through. They’ve not been cleaning up Los Santos so much as they’ve been claiming it, taking full control over the city that has been thought for so long to be utterly untameable, all the while ensuring there will be no one left to challenge them. An empire built on fallen bodies, tacitly approved by the masses, a violent take over sold under the guise of justice. And in that they have found a whole new way to be devious, a fresh take on villainy, giving hope to those who’d thought themselves hopeless only to dash it all away again. Those false heroes, those reprehensible Fakes.

A Game of Thrones - a rant of sorts

You know, I still see hate for Sansa, for what she did in A Game of Thrones, namely tell Cersei that her father was planning on sending her and Arya back to Winterfell. People hate on Sansa so much, because she thought she was “in love” with Joffrey and they think she betrayed her father. And that she essentially was the reason Ned was killed. #whatthefuckguys #comeon

Well, my friends, let me tell you some things here, that other people have probably said before, but I’m bitter so I’ma do it anyway 😂

First and foremost, Sansa was an 11 year old girl, naive and innocent and full of dreams, raised to be a lady, having drilled into her head that she would marry a knight/prince/king/whatever and have babies and all that jazz. If I look back to when I was 11, I still hoped I would actually turn out to be a princess, so hey, I can relate. When she was faced with the possibility of losing all that, without her mother there, she went to the first person who thought would understand - Cersei, who had, until that point, treated her right. In her eyes, she wasn’t betraying Ned, because she didn’t understand the gravity and consequences of what she was doing, because, again, she was and 11 years old with absolutely no clue as to what was happening behind the curtains.

Secondly, let me present a list of the batshit crazy fucked up decisions that my buddy Ned (an Adult™ and Warden of the North, which was kind of a big boy position) made:

1. He went to Cersei and told her he knew about the lineage of her kids. He made the mistake of assuming Cersei was submissive and scared of Robert. Despite evidence of the contrary. *facepalm* (I mean, Littlefinger showed him the amount of spies the queen had, seriously Ned wake the fuck up; he also knew that Robert made no secret of the fact that he still loved Lyanna and had absolutely zero love for Cersei, which should have made him question “hmmm, I wonder if Cersei is bitter about this”)

2. He refused Renly’s help when it was offered. Renly told him he’d give him 100 men, and advised him to take Joffrey from his mother and keep him as a bargaining chip. Which made fucking sense. Renly knew the workings of the court, knew the people and despite not being the rightful heir to the throne (as the younger brother to Robert and Stannis), he made a fair point (I don’t remember for sure if it was Renly who said it, but the point still stands) that Robert himself wasn’t the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, having taken it by force from Mad King Aerys and the Targaryens. Ned was like “nah my dude, this is dishonorable fuck it”

3. He also refused Littlefinger’s plan. Which again, made fucking sense: recognise Joffrey as king, stand as Regent until he came of age, make peace with the Lannisters, wed Sansa to Joffrey, have Cat release Tyrion and preserve the peace. It would have given him time to come up with a different solution. But nooooooo, this was treason. Well, he also fucked up because he trusted fucking Littlefinger jesus h christ.

I mean, I love Ned with all my heart, but damn boi you stupid

Also, let’s not forget something that Catelyn did. “Something”, I say, as if it wasn’t fucking huge: she captured Tyrion, the only proof she had being a dagger that he owned and that was used to try and murder Bran. By capturing Tyrion, she determined Jaime to attack Ned in King’s Landing and kill his men, and then flee to Casterly Rock to Tywin and thus start the march towards Riverrun and essentially start the fucking war. This determined Robb to call his banners and march towards Riverrun as well, in defence of his mother’s House. All because Catelyn felt that someone who wanted to murder someone else would use a weapon that could very easily be traced back to them. IT STUPID.

Ned’s precious honour killed him. And the actions of his wife. Not what Sansa did. So can we all pls lay off her kthxbye

There wasn’t a reason for you to pick up your phone.

You knew who it was, and you knew what he wanted. Yet every time, you would answer, telling yourself that this time was different, or that you were over him, or that this time, you were just coming over to tell him to stop calling you.

You called him just as often however. When you were feeling lonely, or had had one too many drinks. You had been known to leave long voice mails on his phone, one’s that he would never listen to, but he would show up the next day, pinning you against the wall because he knew exactly what you were calling about.

Would Mori kill Chuuya if Odasaku wasn’t enough to drive Dazai out of the Port Mafia?

Short answer: No.

Let’s make two things clear before we begin with the long answer. First: The blogger who put out this idea is one of my favorite BSD theorists, I respect them. This is not an attack or an attempt to take them down, just me protecting my sanity by saying what I think need to be said. Second, I might come to the fandom because of Odazai, but I stayed for Soukoku. So no, I’m not doing this because I hate the pairing.

The premise that I want to talk about was the idea that if Odasaku’s death hadn’t driven Dazai out of the Mafia, then Mori would kill Chuuya in order to finish the job.

Sadly, unless we are in one of those soukoku fanfics where Chuuya’s an innocent tsundere angel in a star-crossed romance with Dazai and Mori’s barely anything more than a devil incarnate made specifically to create the perfect Soukoku habitat, then, no, this scenario is not happening.

Now, even the blind can see that Dazai and Chuuya have a strong bond. The closest I could describe it without dipping into fangirl fantasy was brothers, complete with the sibling rivalry and childish pettiness everyone would display in front of their annoying family member. They’re also partners whose bond was made stronger by hell fires. I mean,

(Really, Bones?)

But is this enough to make Dazai leave? Probably. Would Mori risk it? No.

First, let’s look at the mother bear that has taken Chuuya as her own; Kouyou. As we could see in the manga, she has taken Chuuya either as her protégé, son or at least a little brother as seen from how he called her ‘Ane-san’ or the archaic, formal Japanese for ‘older sister’

If Kouyou is even half as attached to Chuuya, who she has known for years, is as she was to Kyouka, who only knew her for a few months, then do you even think that she will stay silent if she knew Mori killed Chuuya simply to drive Dazai out? To put in the way that would win the Understatement of The Century award, she will not be amused. Look at this scene where Kouyou told Tanizaki why she couldn’t let Mori die;

That’s the reason Kouyou is supporting Mori. When she found out he’s basically doing the same thing as the old boss, she will fight back.

Best situation Mori will lose her support; this is serious because not only she is an executive she is also one of its strongest ability users. Second-degree situation, she will kill him both in revenge and demeaning him no longer a leader deserving of her support.

Worst situation, Kouyou would defect from the Mafia, taking her faction with her along with the people loyal to Chuuya (Notice how caring Chuuya was to his subordinates, it will not be a farfetched to say he got many people loyal to him that would be enraged by the boss killing him off for such a shallow reason) It will break the Mafia in two with a possibility of a gang war fueled by revenge in Yokohama.

Think of the casualties, both monetary and personnel, if this is were to happen. Will Mori risk all this, just to drive Dazai away? Short answer is no. Long answer is no way on earth.

Second, the circumstance of Oda’s death. I hate to admit this but in objective point of view Mori’s scheme was a stroke of genius. It’s carefully planned for the best outcome with minimal casualties.

Positives of Oda dying

1.       The most obvious, The Gifted Business Permit. This is the biggest reward that came out of this sacrifice. With the Mafia should no longer fear the government’s punishing fist if they step out of the line, the freedom to do as they like as long as they’re not caught red-handed by military police.

2.       The cut-down to Port Mafia’s budget. As Odasaku himself has mentioned, Mori calling low-ranking members to his office meant they would be disposed of, indicating this has happened before and will happen again. This is important because the money and resource going to those useless goons can go to more important places, like weaponry or bribery. By killing off Oda, Mori take out a useless member of the Mafia whose only worth was calming marital problems, scaring thieving little kids and hunting for cats.

3.       Cementing Port Mafia’s name to not only the other gangs in the area, but also to the government. This would also be true for International scale since Mimic was supposedly a fearsome terrorist group with a powerful leader.

4.       Dazai lost his best friend and leave the Mafia.  With him gone, so was the threat to Mori’s reign.

Negatives:

1.       Losing one member with irreplaceable Ability that would have been OP if not for his creed to not kill.

Now, to Chuuya.

Positives of Chuuya dying

1.       Dazai losing his partner and driven out of the Mafia

Negatives of Chuuya dying.

1.       Kouyou starting a war on Mori, breaking Mafia in half, and possibly demolishing the whole thing to the ground.

2.       The loss of Mafia’s best martial artist

3.       The loss of the subordinates under Chuuya who was loyal to him

4.       The loss of one-half of Soukoku, will affect the morale of people under him because he was known to be strong both physical-wise and ability-wise.

5.       The loss of people’s trust to Mori’s credibility, making rebellions and defection more common.

6.       The loss of the man who was so invulnerable he would be made Executive sometime in four years, when he was only 22.

As you can see, the negatives of killing Chuuya far outweigh the positive of having Dazai driven out of the Mafia by having him dead. Then this brought up the question; what would have Mori done if Dazai didn’t get out of Mafia?

The answer is: none. Seriously.

This is because there is no way Dazai won’t defect after that. Just like the planning for getting the Permit and getting Oda out of the picture, this has been calculated by Mori from the very start.

Notice this scene,

Now here’s the light novel version

The question arising from it is as such: why would a boy considered to become an Executive soon, scour the remnants of dead soldiers with its lowest-ranked member?

There’s a high possibility Mori was purposefully nurturing the friendship between them. This is also prevalent in the way he didn’t make any negative statements when he remarked about Oda having close relations to Dazai and why he didn’t take out Oda before this, or at least intervene with their friendship.

The same way Dazai’s confident in how his plans will come to fruition, Mori is also a being cut from the same cloth. There is now ay Dazai won’t leave the Mafia both because this has been carefully calculated for a long time and because Dazai himself will know that with this, he is no longer welcome in the Mafia.

I rest my case.

On the other note, the reason why I need to say all of this is because this theory is because how it makes Chuuya’s role into just a foil for Dazai, disregarding all of his worth as an important Mafia member. I love Chuuya, and not even as Soukoku. I love him because of how he is portrayed in the canon.

Killing off Odasaku was logical, it has many upsides and very little downside. Killing off Chuuya when he was clearly an important member was not only out of character, it distort both him and Mori as characters deserving respect.

Chuuya’s a person of his own rights, is important to many people and have people important to him and the list is longer than just Dazai. He’s a beautiful character with well-developed personality, have a life, ambitions, dreams and achievements of his own and I hate it when people just made him out to be a one-dimensional character whose world revolved around Dazai. Let me tell you; he’s not.

jukesboxblues  asked:

how do you feel abt whizzer being portrayed as a narrator throughout falsettos??especially in "marvin at the psychiatrist" and "jason's therapy". i don't see many people talking abt this so,,i'm rather curious abt your opinion

Well, I actually have a lot of Feelings about this, some might say.

If you really pay attention, he’s more of a narrator only in act 1 (I mean, disregarding his portion as a narrator in A Day In Falsettoland bc he wasn’t the only narrator in that song). And here’s why I think William Finn made Whizzer the narrator in March of the Falsettos (the orginal one-act play) and not its sequel, Falsettoland (i.e.: Act Two).

In March of the Falsettos, Whizzer was the narrator because he was consistently portrayed throughout the play as an outsider. He was the most detached character from the rest of the action. I mean, just think about the plots of the play:

1) Marvin wants to maintain a tight-knit family (Tight-Knit Family, This Had Better Come to a Stop, Tight-Knit Family (Reprise), Marvin Hits Trina, I Never Wanted To Love You).

2) Marvin wants to connect with his son (Marvin at the Psychiatrist, Father to Son, I Never Wanted to Love You).

3) Marvin tries to make a housewife out of Whizzer (Thrill of First Love, This Had Better to a Stop, The Chess Game).

4) Jason is scared of turning into his father and so subsequently acts out (My Father’s a Homo, Everyone Tells Jason to See a Psychiatrist, Jason’s Therapy, March of the Falsettos).

5) Trina is trying to get over the divorce and gathering her life back together (Love is Blind, I’m Breaking Down, Trina’s Song, Trina’s Song (Reprise)).

6) Mendel and Trina fall in love. Mendel gains a new family and fights to keep that family (Love is Blind, Please Come to Our House, Jason’s Therapy, A Tight Knit Family (Reprise), A Marriage Proposal, Making a Home).

By contrast with the other characters, Whizzer doesn’t really have his own subplot (save for the one he shares with Marvin - which Marvin primarily dominates by being the main cause of the problem) or a strong, full-frontal dynamic with any other character except Marvin. His strongest relationship was with Marvin. Whizzer and Trina aren’t really shown to interact directly long enough to have their own conflict/rapport; Jason and Whizzer only have that single moment in “Everyone Tells Jason to See A Psychiatrist”; Whizzer and Mendel rarely interacted and so their relationship is never established as anything more than acquaintance. Compare Whizzer’s relationships with the other characters in contrast with how strong the relationships between the other characters (most noticeably Jason and Mendel, Trina and Mendel, Jason and Marvin, Trina and Marvin, and Marvin and Mendel). In Act 1, Whizzer is essentially a prop kind of character, serving narrator purposes and driving Marvin’s character development.

(I mean, Finn did give Whizzer one solo but that’s really the only time we hear about Whizzer’s character that isn’t in relation/involving another character - again, unlike Mendel and Trina and Jason and Marvin).

All the other characters play a more active role in the play (Jason acts out; Trina struggles with a breakdown; Trina and Mendel fall in love; Mendel and Marvin fight; Marvin fights with everyone) Meanwhile, Whizzer is like a quiet observer to the events, watching them unfold and narrating them as an outsider.

So what does this mean meta-wise, you are probably not wondering? Well, I’ll tell you:

Whizzer wasn’t really considered part of the tight-knit family. Or, more like, he didn’t consider himself part of the family. It was easier for him to be detached and narrate the events. After all, he was also the only character that left the tkf after act one (after his break up with Marvin). The other four characters had to stay and co-exist with one another. Whizzer wasn’t portrayed as having deep ties with any other character except Marvin (and arguably Jason but still, that’s established way more in act 2).

The reason that Whizzer isn’t a narrator in Act 2 is because he plays a more active role in the musical (yeah, no kidding) and subsequently can’t be so detached from the events because they directly involve him.

:: - ::

I mean, so yeah. That’s my opinion on it. I like and understand why he was the narrator in act one and not so much in act two.

so here's the deal: i'm gay and sure i'll die alone. is this a bad thing and if so what do i do

i’ve been sitting on this message for a long time, and it admittedly often runs through my mind. it’s an idea i’m still answering or analysing for myself, and i wanted to give the best possible answer. short and snappy, direct guidance.

something i think many gay people have had to reconcile: the idea that you are alone. without a community, that you are an unwanted abnormality. with a community, that you are alone in your specific brand of loneliness—so, again. an unwanted abnormality.

i can see my way through these things rationally. as a woman, i in part feel this because it has been pounded into my head that my sexuality is only acceptable as a symptom of male desire. as a child in a small town, i internalise that i might be the only one. stories of crones and spinsters, women who are only free from their eccentricities once they completely reject the notion of trying. once they physically become their isolations.

we live in a society where, for a variety of reasons good-natured and terrible, there’s a pressure to settle down (however that is defined for you). you are running out of time to not only fall in love, but to experience it. an extension that i don’t know how to relate to straight people is that my scope feels limited. i have spent life as an outlier, and i can come to think it’s because i am inherently unlovable.

divine punishment, or something. cosmic comedy.

i’m ranting to say you’re not alone in that, and i hope you know you can trace that anxiety back to somewhere. even if you can’t deconstruct it entirely. it’s hard. a loneliness which encompasses friendship, family, romance. but there are people who share your experiences, who in some sense already know you intimately.

gay relationships of any kind massively miss the opportunity of being portrayed the way straight relationships are. whether it is not discussing the intensity or honesty. you can have any sort of relationship you would like, or could have. they all exist. these connections and people all exist.

mostly, that’s what i would like you to know. as someone still struggling with this anxiety, that’s what is easiest for me to accept. what is being experienced has recognisable roots, and the world is all but infinite. it’s possible, these people exist, this connection exists.

Fire boy and Ice Ice baby

After a while in the fandom, i was in the mindset of “ Hey but it makes perfect sense for Keith to be fire and Lance to be water
Because they blue and red ahah”

But then,

Actually it’s more than that : listen ;

Because at first, honestly :

Lance’s bright, loud personnality ScrEAms fire to me. A true good Leo. He got the bragging, the look, the style, the lead thingy. He’s a shiny sparkle. He lights the mood and he throws tantrums sometimes.

Keith’s calm, arms crossed while leaning against a wall silent is a Signature™ move for him, he’s rather cold at first. He’s a lonely broody boy. He relies on instinct more than skill, apparently.
And if he’s actually a scorpio it’s bonus round for making Him : WATERBOY.

But then we had “Keith’s a hothead” and some Insecure™ Lance, added to a whole lot of battles.

And while Fighting actually, Keith litterally jumps in the fire. Like, really, litterally, the boy straight dived from a cliff to a burning village. He’s never gonna stop until he runs out of things to punch. He goes for the face. He’s fast, and well… Burns. He’s all emotionnal about fighting, barely thinking before throwing a punch.

On the other hand, Lance’s pretty cool headed while under fire. He sats down and look around, reason differently depending on his teammates, wait and he’s silent as needed. He keeps cool. He’s fluid and doesn’t stop the mission but he never really bursted in them either. He’s what you need to make things flow.

His Bayard’s a long ranged one. More on the protection side, he’s a support. He can reach everywhere, we’ll see this.

Keith’s bayard is a Sword. It progresses little by little, piece by piece, tearing down anything at its fast pace. It’s deadly but only to what touches it, to what encounters it directly. It propagates.
Across a battlefield, Keith is a raging fire propagating.

Have you seen those rainy tragic moments of warzones movies ? Rain’s everywhere. In the ocean, every single person, ally or enemy, has their feet in water.
Water flows. It saves, protects, covers and drown, but everywhere at the same time. Funny how only some kind of rifles-like weapons can relate to this omnypresence and versatility on battlefield ?

So in battle, they meet up fire & ice/water expectations ; ( more under the cut because this is getting long).

hello. first of all, i wanted to say i'm in love with your dio analysis. i think i agreed with everything you've written about him so far. you're truly amazing at getting his character! anyway, i wanted to ask - do you think The World's power fits dio (like his personality, life, etc)? and how? i'd love to hear your thoughts over that. if you answered such question in the past i'd love to be linked. have a nice day!!!

First of all, thank you!! for that.  Yes I definitely think The World’s power fits Dio (and there’s a scene in SDC where Enya tells Dio his Stand is a guardian spirit that’s been protecting him his entire life, which I kind of love the idea of).  Za Warudo’s my favorite stand so this reply’s a little long and freeform:

For me, it’s always felt like Dio’s been motivated primarily by 2 things – freedom and mastery – and Za Warudo’s timestop taps into both of these.  First off, Araki’s explained Za Warudo’s timestop as the manifestation of Dio’s desire to be free from the constraints of Time. That’s a nice parallel to his becoming a vampire in Pt.1, it’s like first Dio mastered time by becoming immortal and then later on he’s actually able to force-stop time and to move through it alone.

One of the cool things about the timestop power is how it creates a stage - not a stage like an actor would have during a performance (it’s sort of the opposite since Dio’s actions during the stop are unobserved), more like a stage in the sense of a space where Dio can take advantage of everything that’s around and set up the most effective and diabolical way to attack. The reason Dio’s been such a formidable adversary is b/c he’ll use anything and everything that’s around him during a fight.  The timestop really exploits this fighting style, creating a space where he can set up elaborate attacks on his victims.

The World’s power feels like it’s been custom-built as an enhancement to Dio’s improvisational fighting style.  And Dio’s a villain with a strong sense of play - he likes toying with his opponent - so obv The World’s perfect for enabling that too (ie, Polnareff on the stairs). The idea of the timestop setting up a type of gamespace is cool too because it relates way back to Dio’s love of chess in Pt.1, so much so that he literally uses the phrase “Checkmate” after setting up his multi-knife attack on Jotaro.

All this ties back to this idea of mastery, The World’s power lets Dio hone and test out both his skills and his limits.

Personality-wise, the idea of a space in which only one can move relates back to Dio’s confidence and arrogance, really.  Dio consistently thinks of himself as a man who stands alone and at the top, and during the timestop that’s pretty much the case.  Stopped time is Dio’s alone.  That’s why he gets so unnerved when Jotaro moves just one of his fingers a little during that stop, it’s like a personal affront to Dio because no one should be even allowed to approach his level.

(fwiw another element in line with Dio’s persona is it’s audaciousness. “Toki yo Tomare” is a command-type phrase, Dio’s directly commanding Time itself to stop.  It’s notable that Dio’s less-confident Part 7 counterpart, Diego, doesn’t use that “yo” command.)

And then there’s just the strength element. Araki talks about how when he wrote Pt.1 he asked himself, “who’s the strongest man in the world?,” the way a child would ask.  In Pt.3 and with Za Warudo it’s like Araki’s applying that same question to stands, asking, what’s the strongest stand power in the world?  In later Jojo parts the timestop becomes one of many OP powers but in Pt.3 it’s so huge that it’s almost unthinkable. So it’s like both Dio and his Stand have their genesis in this same question.

And ZW’s power is physical.  I get the sense Za Warudo’s timestop isn’t just a matter of its master exploiting the flow of the timestream (I think of Kira’s Bites the Dust that way, it’s like Kira and Killer Queen and everyone else slip back through timestream). With Za Warudo though, it’s as if the Stand’s physically forcing the gears of Time to a standstill. It’s drawn this way:

obv it’s figurative but Araki’s emphasizing The World’s raw strength here.

And there’s other stuff, like how elements of The World’s design create a mechanical, robotic impression (versus Star Platinum’s more organic design).  Dio’s got a stand that looks a lot like an unkind machine, it feels symbolic of Dio’s own ruthlessness and cruelty.

Anyway that’s a lot of my thoughts on it.  Thanks for the ask!

Hi! Can we get the RFA trying to comfort an MC who feels inadequate joining the RFA because everyone's so accomplished in there (either rich, a genius, or talented tbh) and she was just kind of thrown in because of Unknown? I'm sorry if that's oddly specific, but I just had that thought earlier and I love your scenarios/imagines. Thanks~!!!

i’m such a huge piece of shit for taking this long. i have over 60 requests. i suck ass. i’m sorry. i’m sorry. i’m sorry but like i have other stuff i need to do and inspiration just doesn’t come and it would turn out really shitty otherwise. oH, and thank you so much! and also, it was kind of easy to write this since i can kind of relate. i’ve been feeling like that lately.

Two days ago, the entire RFA attended an interview since the association started getting more and more attention with each passing day. Your actions not going unnoticed by the world, so it was only natural for the world to want to know more about all of you.

You were ecstatic about the interview.

They started with Jumin, CEO of C&R International, who was followed by Zen, renowned and incredibly talented actor, then Jaehee, (was/is) head assistant at C&R International and an incredibly hard working woman. After her, they started interviewing Yoosung, who was now an incredible student at one of the most prestigious universities in Korea and who had an extremely bright future.

Seven decided not to take part in the interview for security reasons, but he was a genius and the brains behind the app and security of the organization. But everyone knew he was essential to the RFA.

Finally, it was your turn to be interviewed. You had the possible answers for the interview well-rehearsed thanks to Zen. Everyone had done an amazing job which only made you strive for perfection.

How did you join the RFA?”

“What do you do for the organization?”

“Is it true that you took the last Coordinator’s place?”

“Do you think you’re living up to the last Coordinator’s prestigious reputation?”

You noticed that the questions started getting harsher and harsher, and it wasn’t until some technical difficulties with the lights and sound, that the interview came to an end.

You were sure Seven had something to do with it.

Your friends and lover weren’t dumb, they noticed the anxiety that soon started suffocating you thanks to your body language. Zen was the first one to notice, so when the interviewer asked if they could continue the interview elsewhere, he intervened and told her in his ever-charming way that they were unable to stay any longer.

It didn’t surprise you when the interviewer and the producers decided to call it a day.

You were finally home. Everyone was gone because they all had work to do and you conveniently had a day off.

Sitting on the couch, you started going over the interview and it suddenly hit you.

You weren’t worthy of being in the RFA.

There was a sudden tightness around your throat as the fact that the only reason you joined was because you had to. That the only reason you were part of this amazing organization was because you had been dumb enough to listen to a stranger and go deliver a phone that wasn’t even yours. The only thing you did was put yourself and the entire organization at risk.

You were not special.

You were nothing.

Care to elaborate on your tags re: Harry's music and your worries concerning content vs form? I don't get it. Thanks.

So short version (I’ll try and write a post that explains what I actually mean some time in the future - but I can already feel that this post is going to be long).  my concerns about Harry’s music are quite personal.  I really value specificity in music and also fun/joy.  Harry’s interview further suggested that I probably couldn’t expect much of either of these things from his album.  I’d kind of figured that from SOTT and ESNY.  I don’t think joy or specificity are where he’s at as a songwriter - and I also think there is a lot about his position that would discourage joy (and even more so) specificity in songs.  I find the reasons that he might not be into joy and specificity in songs quite endearing and I have huge sympathy for them.  So it doesn’t necessarily change the way I respond to him as a person, but it will change the way I respond to his music.  And it does make me sad, for me, that the music he’s putting out won’t be the sort of music that most resonates with me.

The content vs. form thing of his interview is kind of a feature of the form itself.  Long celebrity interviews are this dance where the celebrity performs being accessible and intimate, while staying on brand and the journalist writes as if they’re revealing while also maintaining access.  To me there were these really jarring juxtapositions to the words Harry was saying and the form of the promo campaign that he was saying it.

So Harry says: “ “Who’s to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy?” etc in his first in depth print interview with a magazine whose entire mission has been to uphold the supremacy of the 30-year-old hipster guy.  This venue and the interviewer were very definitely chosen to signal to those 30-year-old hipster guy that it was OK to like Harry.  On top of that Harry carefully and repeatedly uses the word honest - to signal to those readers that his music is better and more authentic now than it was in One Direction when those teenage girls liked him.

Or Harry says: “I feel like they were always thinking, ‘OK, this ride could stop at any point and we’re going to have to be there when it does.’ There was something about playing the album and how happy I was that told them, ‘If all I get is to make this music, I’m content. If I’m never on that big ride again, I’m happy and proud of it.'” While part of an incredibly highly controlled, high-stakes, promo campaign, designed to make him a solo superstar.

Now that’s really normal, that’s kind of a feature of this sort of interview.  But the impression I got from to the totality of the interview was not that Harry was not just carefully selling an image, but also quite mixed up about who he wanted to be and how he wanted to relate to people, mystery vs honesty and so on.  That this jarring juxtaposition wasn’t just a feature of the form of the celebrity, but also showing how ambivalent and unclear Harry was about all this stuff.

In particular, it made me think of two different statements kind of about being seen.  One was Harry’s own, from a year in the making, “I want to be someone who doesn’t care what people think, but I just don’t think I am.” For me, everything about this promo campaign has demonstrated how much both of those things, wanting not to care, but really caring, are still absolutely true for Harry.

And the other was Jodie Foster’s coming out speech - which is a mess, but I’ve always thought a really profound mess:

…be a big coming-out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age, in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now I’m told, apparently, that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. […] But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else. Privacy.

 […]

I will continue to tell stories, to move people by being moved, the greatest job in the world. It’s just that from now on, I may be holding a different talking stick. And maybe it won’t be as sparkly, maybe it won’t open on 3,000 screens, maybe it will be so quiet and delicate that only dogs can hear it whistle. But it will be my writing on the wall. Jodie Foster was here, I still am, and I want to be seen, to be understood deeply and to be not so very lonely.

(transcript here - full speech easily accessible 2013 Golden Globes).

The juxtaposition between the really deeply felt desire for privacy and the just as deeply felt desire to be seen and understood really moved me when I first saw it and I thought she made it really clear that both could be true at the same time.  And I think the speech demonstrates that when you’ve been in the public eye as long as Jodie Foster, the two desires are impossibly intertwined.

I got the same desire and contradiction (although obviously not nearly as openly laid out - which is what makes Jodie Foster’s speech extraordinarily) from Harry’s interview.

How could he feel anything else? He’s been exposed, told stories about, hidden and lied about.  How could he feel anything but a desire for privacy and a desire to be seen and understood.  How could he hope to untangle them, or even know how to act on them at his age?

And that made me very sad for him - because I want him to have it all.  I want him to be seen and understood and I want him to have all the privacy and space he needs.  And I think either will be very difficult for him to get, let alone both.

i’m writing and I’m not even drunk!

For illnesses that the healing pods couldn’t be used for, Lance had sort of been elected the team nurse. It wasn’t that he knew anything about healthcare, not in the slightest. It was just that he was better at not knowing what to do than the rest of them were.

Keith often worked himself into exhaustion, and though it was rare for him to seek help at all, when he did, he always went to Lance (though it should be noted for the record that it was much, much more common for Lance to intervene uninvited.) Keith would let Lance take care of him in these rare and vulnerable moments. He’d complain about the list of things he had to do, and Lance would listen astutely and tell him not to worry. A special lavender candle that very secretly calmed Keith’s nerves would find its way onto his bedside table, and he’d close his eyes as Lance massaged the tension out of his shoulders and neck util he fell asleep. And the next morning, when he woke to relaxed muscles, the candle hidden away to prevent the others from embarrassing him about it, and an inexplicably finished list of chores, he would greet an always-tired looking Lance with unspoken gratitude and a mutual agreement to never tell a soul about those nights.

While Hunk was used to the motion sickness, every once in a while, it made him really miserable. After a particularly harrowing battle, when he was already exhausted and sore and just wanted to go to bed, the vertigo and nausea associated with flying his Lion back to the castle was sometimes too much for him to handle. At times like this, Lance would set Blue on autopilot and join Hunk in Yellow, rubbing his back and not even flinching when he occasionally vomited on his shoes. Lance had cleaned his shoes more times than he could count. Sometimes tears would escape from the corners of Hunk’s eyes, much to his embarrassment, and only in front of Lance would he not feel the need to immediately wipe them away. Lance would simply wait until Hunk’s stomach calmed down and wipe his mouth with a soft cloth, then wipe away the tears with gentle thumbs. Hunk would allow himself to lie exhaustedly against Lance until they arrived at the castle, where Hunk would once again put on the mask of strength for the others. Lance would never tell anyone about it.

Pidge’s allergies sometimes made it hurt to breathe. Though it was normally nothing beyond a benign but annoying congestion, every once in a while, they would get bad, and she’d end up feeling like there was a weight on her chest. She’d been a bit intimidated to go to anyone at first. At home, her father had always helped her rub vapor rub on her chest, but she’d been younger then, and it was her father. She knew that it wasn’t something she’d expect or even want from the paladins. And when Lance had asked her privately whether she needed anything when he caught her wheezing after a particularly rough sparring match, she’d hesitated. She’d told him she was fine through a blocked nose and a rough voice. But she hadn’t protested when he entered her room just a short while later with a bowl of hot water and a towel, and she hadn’t shrugged him off when he’d rubbed light circles into her back as she breathed in the steam. She’d even been open to the spicy soup (or, as close as the Alteans could get, anyway) that his mother had apparently sworn by. When Shiro commented at dinner that she sounded like she was feeling better, she’d simply nodded, and Lance hadn’t said a word.

Shiro himself was perhaps the most insecure about seeking help when he wasn’t feeling right. It wasn’t uncommon for him to wake in the middle of the night dripping in sweat and shaking with the memories of his time in the Galra prison. He could never go back to sleep after that. So, he always made his way (usually rather loudly) (past Lance’s room) to the common area to sit on the couch and read. It never helped. Shiro couldn’t get his racing thoughts to focus on the books in front of him. It was easier, however, to distract himself with the two cups of tea that Lance was always so conveniently about to enjoy on these nights, but wouldn’t mind sharing with Shiro, since he was up. If he wanted to talk about the nightmare, he could, though Lance never asked. Usually, he was still too nervous to keep good conversation, and if the nightmare was bad enough, sometimes he felt like it was a strain just to stay grounded in this reality. Lance’s feet outstretched on his lap helped with that. Shiro didn’t like having his back rubbed, not like Pidge and Hunk, but the non-invasive contact was a good reminder of where he was, and the stupid stories about all the pets Lance had ever owned and who Lance believed of the team would look best in drag (besides himself, of course) and theories about the cutest space animals helped him remember that he’d never, EVER be back in that horrible place again, because he had people that would die before they let that happen. And if Shiro fell asleep listening to Lance talk, he’d always wake up to find a book in his lap and a blanket on his body that made it look as though he’d simply fallen asleep reading. If the others questioned it, Lance was always just as confused as they were.

Not only did Lance take care of his friends, but he respected their privacy enough to ensure that they all believed they were the only ones he ever sat up with through sleepless nights and worriedly-nursed fevers and queasy tummies. Maybe Lance didn’t always understand why that secrecy was so important to them, but he respected it. He didn’t need the recognition of the others, after all, or even a thank you from the person he was caring for. Often, he didn’t get one. But that was okay. As long as they knocked on his door again the next time they needed someone, that would be enough. As long as he could take pride in knowing that each of his friends felt safe showing a side to him that they couldn’t show to the others, he was okay. That unguarded Keith, that sensitive Hunk, that candid Pidge, that vulnerable Shiro–those were his and his alone.

So if Lance had to build up his own invincible walls of cockiness and flamboyant confidence in order to keep them coming to him, then so be it. If he had to hide probable bruised and broken ribs and laugh off his own migraines and tension, then that’s what he’d do. Whatever the cost of keeping that trust, whatever the price of that naked bond; he’d pay it.

He’d pay it if it was the last thing he did, if it was the only reason he was on the team at all, if it was the only impression he ever left on the world while the other four Paladin names went down in history as the greatest heroes the universe had ever known.
