-The first guest of my shift placed their babbling, giggling newborn on my conveyor belt for me to ring up, instantaneously paving the way for a bright and joyous day.
-I became ecstatic to find a roll of fresh, new, spring-themed stickers the size of my face at my register. The sticker renaissance shall now commence.
-I rang up an intimidating biker with a wizardly beard for his purchase of one single Dr. Seuss book. I now consider him a close friend, as I stand by my lifelong belief that not a soul who reads Dr. Seuss can do anything wrong.
-Shortly after the discovery of my spring stickers, I came to the realization that they were, in fact, a heretofore undiscovered strand of Christmas stickers that we had not previously had on hand. I do not understand why we have such a large and untapped stock, but I am prepared to make the most of it.
-A man in his sixties, phenomenally spry and smooth-skinned for his age, purchased forty dollars worth of dried prunes. I believe he may have uncovered the secret to immortality. While I appreciate the scientific progress this man is making, I will embrace whatever final form nature has in store for me so long as I do not have to give up my crunchwrap supremes.
-A mother asked her child if he wanted his shoe back, pulling one single Croc out of her purse. I am not sure what he may have done to lose his shoe privilege in the first place, but I am glad to see that he is earning it back.
-After I gave her a sticker, a mother told her daughter, “Say thank you.” In a brilliant moment of word association, she peacefully replied, “You are welcome.” I consider myself blessed by this small person and will live out my life in bliss.
-I befriended the kindest and most eloquent child named Bennett. We shared a lovely conversation, touching on such topics as how nice our respective names are, his recent go-karting accident, his subsequent recovery, and stickers. I believe I may have found my Best Man.
-A woman in her seventies attempted to run her husband over with her cart, gleefully yelling, “Beep beep beep!” Hopefully, I have just received a glimpse into my future.
-I have adopted a new motto in life, and that motto is as follows: “You have never seen true purity until you have seen an infant in glasses."
Stop putting down other girls. Stop hating other girls. Stop feeling threatened and insecure and jealous because that’s just getting in the way of you knowing a really awesome human being. You know, no one can ever be you. No one IS you. So there’s really no sense in feeling any kind of competition.
reasons why i’m proud of LABOUM’s win: coming from an unknown, small company must be really hard for groups to build a fandom or even appear on radio/ tv shows. LABOUM who have been working non-stop for recognition for three years won against IU, one of the greatest soloist in kpop rn, that makes their win even more meaningful and memorable! I’m proud to be their fan. If you love a group, please continue supporting them, patience has its rewards.
The future is a master’s degree. The future is changing the lives of children everywhere. The future is making the world a better place. The future is making a difference, no matter how many obstacles I encounter along the way. The future may be anything we make it out to be! Bring it 2017 💕
“Sunday night I was taking a flight back from San Francisco to Toronto and was stopped by security and ordered into additional screening. Now this is nothing new to me, as I’m a brown dude who flies quite often and these types of extra screening and searchings are regular occurrences. In this specific case however I was asked to remove my turban so it could go through an additional extra check. my first inclination was to say nah, I had a flight to catch and taking off a turban and tying it back on before a flight would be inconvenient. I asked to have a pat down instead (i get my clothes patted down, and those too are made of cloth, never asked to remove those) the manager insisted that either I would take off my turban and or I would be escorted back into the public area and I could book a flight with a different airline or airport.
They provided a private screening room, and after they had done a complete body search and scanned my turban through another x-ray… they came back and told me I was good to go.
It was at this point I asked for a mirror to retie my turban again, because unlike a hat or a shoe, tying a turban back on takes time and skill (great skill, only the manliest of men know) plus I gotta make sure i look extra crispy and good ALWAYS (my motto in life, most of the time when I’m not lazy of course) The officials responded that they don’t provide mirrors and one of them had even told me to walk down the nearest bathroom at the other end of the terminal, in public, without my turban on. Which completely defeats the purpose of being in a private room in the first place… why “undress” me and then tell me to walk out “undressed” to the nearest bathroom to retie my turban again? The turban is a sign of royalty, respect, dignity, courage and has a huge significance for my people.
I followed all the security protocols, asked whatever they wanted me to do, the issue isn’t JUST with the fact that I was asked to remove the turban (however silly it still is) but with the lack of respect and insensitivity when I asked for a simple request like a mirror to tie it back on again.
L’Officiel Hommes April 2017; Chanyeol’s interview (Part 2)
L’Officiel Hommes: You’re 25 years of age now. If you were to choose something that you would like to pursue and accomplish while you are still in your twenties, what would it be? Chanyeol: I have many things that I wish to do within this period of time. It’s almost too much. I don’t simply wish to just accomplish merely one, but all. But if i really had to choose just one out of the list, it would be to release a solo album of my own. By that i mean an album that lives up to not only my personal expectations, but those of the people around me as well. L’Officiel Hommes: As the saying goes, “With youth, comes pain”. You’re currently at the primer of your youth, what significance does being a youth in your twenties hold to you? Chanyeol: I personally feel that it’s everyone’s time to shine the brightest when they’re in their twenties. It’s as though we’ve transformed into adults overnight, fueling our desires to take on new challenges that we’ve previously been shying away from. That, i feel, is where the true essence of being in your twenties lies in. When i was in my high school days, i yearned to be 20 years old quickly. It was almost as though it held they key to the doors that opened up to a whole new fascinating world. I still have the same sentiments now that i’m actually in my twenties. Being in this age group is truly a period of time where one’s mental and physical abilities are at its prime. It allows you to undergo the various challenges, while sustaining the tenacity to overcome the underlying failures and obstacles that come your way. It’s a time where instead of feeling isolated, you feel a sense of euphoria in whatever you do. However, being in your twenties isn’t always a bed full of roses either. It’s one where it lets you have a chance to really explore and harness your talents. Hence, to truly enjoy this experience, you would have to physically act on them. In order to achieve what you desire, you have to constantly be pursuing and striving towards them, at the same time keeping yourself in good shape! L’Officiel Hommes: You’ve recently collaborated with a fellow artist Junggigo on a song entitled “Let Me Love You”. How has this experience made you discover distinctive aspects about working with other artists in the music industry? Chanyeol: Besides working with people that i’m familiar with, i enjoy the refreshing feeling of being able to meet with new people as part of the learning process. When i’m collaborating with other artists, i enjoy the process of discovering our similarities in music. When we are in the process of discussing about the lyrics, we discover and learn about our mutual passions and concerns outside of music as well, i really enjoy that. Both Junggigo and i harbor a soft spot for a particular line in our recent song “Let Me Love You” that goes “And now, you would just have to nod slightly in agreement”. It’s about a guy professing his love for his partner. I’ve always wanted to bring up this suggestion during my process of lyrical composition, and finding someone who shares the same sentiments. Collaborating on a song is as special as the process of falling in love. L’Officiel Hommes: You’ve recently portrayed the role of Lee Yeol in the drama series “Missing Nine”. You’re similar to the character in terms of the fact that you’re a composer as well. Where do you particularly harvest your inspirations from and how do you go about doing so (composing)? Chanyeol: Going as far to label it as “inspiration” sounds a little too far fetched for the time being. If you were to ask me during which point of the day i feel is the easiest to draft out an idea for a self composed song, it’ll be at times when i’m feeling the most empty and lonely. This often happens when i’m overseas during concerts. By the time i return to the hotel at the end of the day, i find myself inevitably absorbed into the realms of composing a song. After performing in front of thousands for a period of 3 hours, i’m alone again once i’m back in the hotel. I’ll just be there sitting quietly, but due to the loud noises during the concert, my ears would still be buzzing. On a whole, how should i put this, i feel a sense of tranquility. And at this moment, i would have various thoughts floating through my mind, and this is exactly when i’m the most fluent in composing. The songs that i’ve revealed on NAVER Vapp are often those that i’ve penned down when i’m in the hotel during my overseas trips for concert tours. L’Officiel Hommes: During the 4th E-daily Culture awards ceremony held on the 16th February, EXO won the “Most outstanding” award in the concert category. What aspect of the EXO concert are you particularly most detailed and concerned about? Chanyeol: The preparation of the stages as well as the choreography. I would always make sure to make a constant effort to remember the notes made, as well as the layout and positions that i’m supposed to be in. Also, the certain degree of fan interaction that i would require. Whether they are able to thoroughly feel the energy and message that i’m trying to bring across. I would always say a quick prayer before the start of every concert. “Please give me the peace and the strength for everyone to thoroughly enjoy the performance fervently”. I would feel an immense sense of accomplishment if i felt like i was able to accomplish what i had set out to do. Alternatively, should i fail to do so, i would seek to find ways to improve the situation in the future.
L’Officiel Hommes: Recently what are the 3 things you personally feel you find strength and vitality in? Chanyeol: Lyrical composition, my beloved animal companion (Toben) and my current interests. I’ve been extremely busy recently, but whenever i feel like it, i would always take the time off to go snowboarding. It is through this that i feel that i’ve fruitfully made use of my free time. L’Officiel Hommes: My final question for you, what’s your life motto? Chanyeol: It’s “Just Enjoy”. I’d like to make everything that i do enjoyable for everyone. When i’m enjoying myself, i make sure that not only do i find joy in the process, but to also strive for a positive outcome at the very end. With my recent desire to pick up the Japanese language, i’d love to see it as a light hearted past time, as opposed to pure learning, hence i see myself gradually making improvements along the way. When i make sure to make my lyrical compositions for EXO songs an enjoyable process, i would pour in more effort into it, and in turn embark on a more professional-based betterment of myself.
