I travel to Valdivia and visited my mother. I brought my camera and drone (as always) and took some shots of my city. Fortunately the weather was fantastic and my Mom could make a “cameo”
Valdivia city is located in the south of Chile, 850 kms from Santiago (Capital City). It’s well recognized as “City of Rivers” and here took place, in 1960, the most powerful earthquake ever recorded (Magnitude 9.5).
Nowadays it’s a beautiful and little city with more than 140,000 inhabitants surrounded by Calle Calle, Valdivia and Cau Cau rivers.

middle-earth meme: five locations (4/5) ➝ the shire, home of the hobbits

The most peaceful of all the regions in Eriador, the Shire is the home of the Hobbits. Famous for its rolling hills, quaint streams and green fields, it is one of the most beautiful lands in all of Middle-earth for its simplicity. Hobbit homes are nestled against the countryside, flower beds and vegetable gardens as much a part of the land as several rivers that flow through it.

savvyshelly1113  asked:

Hi Cassie! I have to preface this question with the HIGHEST of praises for this fantastic shadowhunter world you have created! So Clary and Magnus both had visions of Idris running red with blood. If Clary gets visions because of her angelic power why does Magnus also get these visions? Also, as we saw in LoS in the Unseelie lands rivers are filled with blood. Does the blight that's starting to spread in Idris imply we will see their vision come true in QoaaD? What does this mean for our heros?

I love WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OUR HEROES? It reminds me of classic comics!

Remember that Magnus is a really interesting warlock because his father was a Greater Demon — remember when he took that witchlight from Alec in CoLS and it started to glow? Asmodeus is a prince of Hell — a fallen angel. Angels and Greater Demons are not as un-alike as they would often like to think. Lucifer was after all, God’s most beautiful angel: You were the seal of perfection: full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.*

As Cristina points out, the rivers of Faerie having blood in them may not be new — Mark quoted Tam Lin to Emma in Lady Midnight: and all the blood that’s shed on earth, runs through the springs of that country (Faerie.) That has a lot to do with Faerie’s connection to the mundane world and the idea of the mundane world’s evils spilling into Faerie. We’ll learn more about the blight in Queen of Air and Darkness, but perhaps it’s Faerie’s turn to spill evils back into the mundane world?

* (Ezekiel 28:12)

I’m literally in tears right now. This is Multnomah Falls, Oregon. A couple of days ago some teenagers set off fireworks in the forest near here and it started a wildfire that’s now engulfed more than 4,800 acres. Because of our unseasonable lack of rain, and the strong winds we’re getting currently the blaze has managed to even cross over the Columbia River Gorge and into Washington. This is my favourite place on earth. I have had so much fun in these places; it’s some of the most beautiful nature we have here in Oregon. I can’t stand the fact that it’s never going to be quite the same.

So many people have been evacuated from their homes.
The sun and moon have been blood red for days.
It’s literally raining a fine later of ash over our towns.

It just hurts to see all this destruction. I love this place, and these people shouldn’t be being ripped from their homes. I’m exhausted.

-PART 2-

The signs as benders

Fire Benders

Aries

- First fire bending sign. Your bending is dynamic but can be temperamental. Your are pure, active, interested in everything and adventurous, like a small fire that has just began to ignite and is surrounded by kindling. This is where your childlike qualities and enthusiasm originate making you a playful but temperamental fire bender.

Leo

- Middle fire bending sign. Like the sun, your bending is stable, radiant and helps to keep things under control. Your bending is steady, dependable, grand and makes its presence known. Your bending can do good but be careful not to turn a small flame into a raging fireball.

Sagittarius

-  Final fire bending sign. A Sagittarius leans towards the Philosophical, bottom part of their flame that is mystical and out of reach. You are idealistic, creative and the most gentle fire bender. Your fire bending is very dynamic and you will be the first to discover new things with it.

Water Benders

Cancer

When unleashed however, like a river spilling over its banks your bending can be aggressive when the need to defend yourself or someone you love arises.

Scorpio

- Middle water bending sign. Your bending has a lot of potential. if not properly controlled it can continuously wreak havoc on everything in its path. You are full of energy, intensity and are similar to a raging river. You need control, your bending needs a lot of self control, all of your energy has to be harnessed to be effective (like putting a hydroelectric dam on a raging river). If controlled your bending could be used to provide power to cities or protect farmers from floods.

Pisces

- The final water bending sign. Your bending resembles a small creek, overly flexible and to adaptable. Air Benders

Gemini

- The first air bending sign. Your bending is the most flightly, like the wind that forms a dust devil, picking up debris, swirling with it and then letting it go, off to explore another region. You want your bending to be peaceful and want to use it to help the lives of everyone you touch, just like air. You want to form relationships of balance, I give you air, you give me life. This is why relationships are so important to you,

Aquarius

- The last and highest air element. Your bending is a powerful force which can make the world go round. It has the power to change areas, and it does. You are the sign of change and originality. You seek understanding and are not afraid to use your bending to knock down any barriers which may be in your way. If not kept under control your bending can become unpredictable and erratic. You are the most advanced thinker of the benders and are concerned with advancing civilization and the future of man kind with the power of air bending.

Igbo Water Divinities

River gods and goddesses are found wherever a significant river or waterbody is found in Igboland, some of the more powerful cults cover larger areas and command more respect and followers by the importance of the waterbodies. Often of fluid gender, the water spirits are powerful ‘images’ of sexuality, fertility, beauty, and wealth and power. The most powerful water spirits are listed.

[Map of major rivers linked to divinities within Igboland]

Ńjābá

Ńjābá is so powerful among southern and specifically southwestern Igbo communities that he outranks Àlà, the Earth Mother, in these communities. Ńjābá is usually male and is the guardian of the river of the same name that is a major tributary of Ụ́gwụ́tá (Oguta) Lake in Imo State, Nigeria. Éké, the royal python, is sacred to Ńjābá and surrounding communities consider them messengers and manifestations of Ńjābá and somewhat of a totem animal of which it is forbidden to harm or eat; serious fines and the responsibility of funding a human-sized burial for the snakes befalls anyone who harms pythons. [Interview about Ńjābá+]

Ímò Ḿmírí

Ímò Ḿmírí is the spirit of the Imo River [pictured] which runs between present day Imo State (which is named after the river) and Abia State and runs into the Atlantic between a section of Rivers State and Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria. She is usually feminine and was associated with the  Ibinukpabi oracle or “Long Juju” of Arochukwu, the most powerful oracle in southeastern Nigeria during the Atlantic Slave Trade, and she is considered as its female counterpart. Ímò Ḿmírí is a largely benevolent fertility spirit. In myth, the Imo is the river that rushed between the Ngwa people of Abia State and their relatives in Imo State creating a permanent cut-off between them. [More+]

Óshìmírí

Also: Ósìmírí / Órìmílí / Órìmírí / Ósìmílí - the female spirit of the Niger River which is named after her in Igbo. As is usual to feminine water spirits she is a fertility goddess. Èzù nà Ómáḿbálá, the confluence of the Anambra and Niger Rivers, is the site where Èrì’s band, the primogenitor of the Umuleri and Umunri Igbo people, migrated from the north to and settled.

Ìdèmílí

Ìdèmílí is the female spirit of the river of the same name that runs through the local government area of the same name in Anambra State, Nigeria. Ìdèmílí means ‘the pillar of waters’ referring to the spiritual force of the water spirit preventing rain-clouds in the sky from falling [ídè also means flood, and water spirit forces are known to punish through floods or other sorts of water-logging]. Like most water spirits Ìdèmílí is a fertility goddess. Éké, royal pythons, are also sacred to Ìdèmílí and to communities that depend on her and are also known as Éké Ìdèmílí. Ìdèmílí’s story also involves appearing to mortals as a maiden. [The Ìdèmílí story+] [Priest of the Ìdèmílí shrine+]

Ụ̀háḿmírí

Also: Ụ̀hámírí - The ambivalent feminine spirit of Ụ́gwụ́tá Lake of which she owns, she is paired with Ńjābá and she is also known as Ògbúìdè meaning ‘deep floodwater’ and her husband is Okita. Ụ̀háḿmírí roughly translates from Igbo as ‘the shining beauty of the waters’; Ụ̀háḿmírí is beautiful and wealthy and happy and childless. She is a powerful spirit among women in Ụ́gwụ́tá and is considered as somewhat of a spirit of achievement among women; successful women in Ụ́gwụ́tá especially were said to mostly be devotees of Ụ̀háḿmírí.

Ụ́ràshị̀

Also: Ụ́làsị̀ / Ụ́ràsị̀ - The spirit of the Ụ́ràshị̀ (Orashi) River which runs through Imo State and Rivers State. A male, Ụ́ràshị̀’s sacred grove, like Ògbúìdè’s, was marked primarily by the red and white pieces of cloth.

Ọ́máḿbárá

Also: Ọ́máḿbálá - The spirit of the Ọ́máḿbárá (Anambra) River which runs through northern Anambra State in Anam-Igbo land and then into the Niger River.

Ọ̀tá Ḿmírí

Of the Ọ̀tá Ḿmírí (Otamiri) River which runs through Imo State and particularly Ụ́ràtà-Igbo communities where the Ḿbárí votive shrines are dedicated to his mother, Àlà the Earth Mother, and where he plays a significant role.

She was like satin and lace. She felt so fucking good in between my finger tips. Her tongue felt like silk when it was gliding up my neck and her teeth felt like nirvana as they grazed against the underside of my jaw. The way her fingers traced patterns on my hip bones and her sighs landed on my collarbones. I wanted to feel her against my chest. Wanted to feel her body pressed against mine until the heat between our skin lit us on fire and burned us to the ground.

She made me want her body more than I wanted to fucking breathe. A parched man who needed her lips on mine like she was the god damn amazon river. She made my body arch like electricity was running through my veins. Panting like I’d run 5 miles just so I could taste the back of her shoulder blade.
She made me crave her while I was in bed alone, staring at the blackness of the ceiling and pretending it was the sky.

But it wasn’t just her body, it was her fucking mind. She was brilliance in the most beautiful form. The way her eyes relaxed when she talked about earth. She spoke like a trucker but my God, the sound of her voice wrapped around those curse words made my fucking bones quiver. She’d snap and snarl at me just to see my face contort in shock. When she spoke, she spoke of politics and science and the book she read last Sunday. Her mind was tinged purple but her vocal cords red. And her laugh, oh God her laugh was liquid honey, I’m surprised she didn’t drown in it. She was everything I needed. Dramatic, exotic.

She made me fall in love with everything she was and then she left. She drifted away like gravity had been turned off and she’d always wanted to visit outer space. She put her shirt back on then wouldn’t call me for almost fifteen days. She didn’t want my love, wasn’t looking for it in the dark corners of my mind. She didn’t want to hold my hand or meet my family. She wanted me kiss her breathless then erase the image of her from the back of my eyelids.

She’s is the most desired creature and she couldn’t care any fucking less.

Urban Magic Youtubers AU - Marzia - Nereid, A Nymph of The Mediterranean Sea

“Once you see the inner beauty, it tends to show on the outside as well.”

Nymphs have been recognized throughout history as the most beautiful creatures known to mankind. From the dryads of the forest to the lampads of the Underworld, their grace and charm has inspired the Greeks and the Romans to attempt to capture them in written word and painted form.

While the nymphs of history have ranged from kindhearted to neutral to outright evil(as varied as Mother Nature herself), Marzia is possibly the most gracious and graceful there ever was. While most sea dwellers stay away from the surface in this modern world of all-seeing submersibles and iron barges, Marzia ventures onto land, basking the beauty of the world above the waves.

Soon, she bid her home waters farewell and set off to explore more of what the solid earth had to offer. Swimming inland by rivers and streams all over the world. She arrived in New York eight years ago, falling in love with the hustle and bustle and quickly making a name for herself among the Manhattan elites as an up-and-coming designer determined to spread her admiration for the world to others. Though behind closed doors, her socialite peers wonder what someone as exceptional as her is doing dating a hot dog vendor…

(I was already gonna make Marzia a nymph of some kind then I learned that the Aegean/Mediterranean Sea have nymphs specifically for them. 50 of them actually. all named. but to heck with that. I realize i made her a bit The Little Mermaid-sque but less with an obsession for the surface world and more an equal love for both land and sea)

“Are you sure you’ll be okay?” Hoseok’s worried voice sounded on the other end of the line as you walked down the stairs towards the trash room of your building. He was always looking out for you, especially for the last few months. Without him, you wouldn’t have known what to do. “You haven’t been alone ever since he left.”

Four years ago I followed this body of water 1500-miles, source to sea with @mountainworld and @davidcmorton to document its beauty, magic, mystery and water contamination – to understand the state of the most revered and reviled river in the world. The full story of our journey is told in an hour long documentary titled #HolyunHolyRiver which is at festivals worldwide. The Four Elements

Air

Tool: Wand

Direction: East

Astrological Signs: Aquarius, Gemini

Archangel: Raphael

Elemental: Sylphs (their ruler is Niksa)

Tarot suit: sword

Energy: projective (“masculine”)

Air is the Element of the intellect, mental processes, and communication. It is considered an activating Element. The direction that corresponds to Air is the East, where the day begins. Air is the springtime, new beginnings, and, in the foundations of Magickal thought, Faith. Faith (confidence) in Magickal energies comes from knowledge (intellect) and from understanding the processes of ritual and focused thought, then applying them with sure result.  The tool of Air is the Wand, which is used to direct and channel energy in Magick. When it is used in healing to absorb the energy of the Universe and channel it into the patient, the Wand corresponds to the caduceus of Mercury/Hermes, a God of Air—you will notice that this same symbol is used by physicians today.  The Astrological Signs associated with Air are Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra. Aquarius is the innovator, the Sign of original thought and ideals. Gemini is the communicator, the comedian, the experimenter. Libra is the balancer and harmonizer, interested in partnerships and relationships.

The Archangel of Air is Raphael, the Archangel of healing, teaching, and travel. He is visualized on a mountaintop, in robes of yellow and lavender (the colors associated with the Element Air), which blow gently in the wind.

Sylphs are the Elementals attributed to Air and are similar in form to humans, although they are transparent and have lovely, delicate wings. They travel on the wind, and you can hear them talking and laughing as they drift in and out of the trees. Paralda is the name of their ruler. Sylphs are very articulate and logical and prefer the mountaintops where the air is the thinnest. They are related to the nervous system in the human body. Their favorite scents are the mints and light flowery essences such as tulip, and they love the sound of bells and wind chimes.

Fire

Tool: Athame

Direction: South

Astrological sign: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius

Archangel:  Michael (pronounced Mee-kee-al)

Elemental: salamander (their ruler is a Djinn [pronounced Jeen])

Energy: projective (“masculine”)

Fire is the Element of Will and Passion and is considered an activate Element in relation to energy. The direction that corresponds to Fire is the South, which we associate with heat. The season is, of course, summer the time of growth and culmination of that growth.

Fire is the drive and motivation used by an individual as he strives toward his goals. In the foundations of Magick, Fire is the Magickal Will.  The force of the Magickal Will enables the Magickian to carry through with goals, plans, and dreams. The focused Magickal Will serves as the force or stimulus for the Magickal energy that is sent forth to act on the physical plane to manifest the goal of any ritual.  The tool of Fire is the Athame, the ritual dagger, which is used to inscribe the Magickal sigils in the ether during ritual, describe the circumference of the Magickal Circle, banish phantasms and defend against them, and heal via the act of removing holes in the aura through cauterization on the astral plane.

The Astrological Signs that correspond to Fire are the Fire Signs of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, all Signs of action and vitality. Aries initiates new projects, Leo is the Fire Sign of flamboyance and flair, and Sagittarius is the Sign of freedom and physical activity.

The Archangel of Fire is Michael, the Archangel of authority, victory, initiative, and splendor. Michael is visualized in robes of scarlet and green, bearing before him a flaming sword.

Fire is the activating force giving vitality and energy to the ideas of Air, bringing them into physical reality as we perceive it.  Salamanders are attributed to the Element of Fire. They are not considered a part of the physical flame as such but the essence that enables the flame to burn. Naturally, they are most active in the summer months and geographically prefer the hotter regions. When they live in cold places, Salamanders reside in the hearth. They are full of passion and enthusiasm and for this reason are sometimes considered dangerous, as their unpredictability can be disconcerting. However, they are actually very generous and warmhearted, if treated with the respect due them. Salamanders relate to the heart in the human body as well as to the circulatory system. Their King is called Djinn.  Salamanders love the smell of burning wood and spicy odors such as cinnamon and nutmeg.  Candles, lanterns, and mirrors are attractive to them.

Water

Tool: Chalice and cauldron

Direction: West

Astrological sign: Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio

Archangel: Gabriel

Elemental: Undines (their ruler is Necksa)

Energy: receptive (“feminine”)

Water is the Element of love, intuition, emotion, fertility, understanding, and imagination. It is considered a receptive Element. Water receives the ideas of Air, the force of Fire, and begins the alchemical process of transmuting them into a form that can be made tangible. The direction that corresponds to Water is the West. Human emotions and feelings belong to the Element Water. The season is autumn, and in the foundations of Magick, Water is imagination. Imagination begins in our dreams and in the language of our subconscious minds. Without it, our rituals would be dry and emotionless. Imagination allows us to see what might be and is therefore creativity, fertility, and inner vision.

The tool of Water is the Chalice, which is used to contain the water of purification when we cleanse a space or an object for ritual. The Chalice holds the ritual wine and the liquid for the practice of scrying. The Chalice represents wisdom, transformation, and receptivity. In the legends of ancient times, the Grail of Immortality was sought by the valiant for its life-giving and regenerative powers as well as for the knowledge it brings. The Ritual Cauldron is also of the Element of Water, and the stories that surround it—the regenerative Cauldron of Dagda, the Cauldron of wisdom belonging to Ceridwen, and the Cauldron of Baba Yaga—reaffirm the theme of wisdom, life, transformation, and regeneration.

The Astrological Water Signs of Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio correspond to the Magickal Element of Water. Pisces is the Sign of emotional connection and inner vision; Cancer is associated with family connection and nurturing; and Scorpio is known for occult ability, psychic power, death, and regeneration.

The Archangel of Water is Gabriel, known as the Prince of Change and Alteration. He can be seen on the Judgment card of the Tarot, blowing his horn, which represents fertility and authority.  Gabriel is visualized in robes of clear blue and orange, holding a Chalice from which torrents of water spill.

Undines are the Elementals of Water. They are extremely graceful and seductive. Undines are similar to humans in form and the majority of them are female. They will impart psychic knowledge and ability. If you work with them in this area, be sure to give them extravagant and appealing gifts in return, for they have feelings that can be easily bruised. They correspond to the human digestive system, and Necksa is their King. Undines live in oceans, rivers, springs, creeks, and raindrops.  Their most beloved scents are cool ones—camphor, cucumber, and citrus fruits such as lime. They delight in beautiful shells, silver jewelry, boxes for their treasures, and flutes.

Earth

Tool: Disk/shield/pentacle

Direction: North

Astrological sign: Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo

Archangel:Uriel (pronounced Ah-ree-el or Yuh-ree-el)

Elemental: dwarfs (Their King is Gheb)

Energy: Receptive (“feminine”)

Earth is the Element of secrecy, deep wisdom, possessions, creation, perseverance, birth, and death.  It is considered to be a receptive Element. Earth receives the idea of Air, the force of Fire, and the transmuted substance of Water and manifests the form into the physical world. The direction that is associated with Earth is the North, the place of endings. Earth corresponds to the bone structure of the human body. The season is winter, and in the foundation of Magick, Earth is Secrecy. Hidden beneath the Earth are many treasures—jewels, minerals, oil—which must be sought out. They cannot be obtained without perseverance and labor. So it is with the Magickal secrets that the Element Earth hides; only through dedication and patience can these secrets be brought to light, yet they must always be protected and guarded.  The tool of the Earth is the Pentacle, which is used both for drawing in and projecting energy.  The Pentacle can also used as a shield for psychic self-defense. The Magickal Cords are also of Earth and are used to bind energy.

Capricorn is the Sign of pragmatism and wealth; Taurus is the Sign associated with sensuality, acquisition, resources, and practicality; and Virgo is the Sign of the healer and the organizer.

The Archangel of Earth is Uriel (pronounced Ah-ree-el or Yuh-ree-el), also called the Lord of Awe, who presides over protection and strength. He is visualized in robes of olive and russet, bearing a Pentacle.  Gnomes and elves are attributed to Earth and are seen in very small human form. Their King is Gheb (also known as Geb or Gob, as in goblin). Earth Elementals are the most mischievous of the Elementals and love a good practical joke. They prefer to live in the forest, crags, heaths, and caverns, although with the human population cutting down on gnomes’ habitats, the more sociable ones actually enjoy being around sensitive and sympathetic human beings and will share living quarters. Gnomes and elves love jewels, gold, interesting rocks, moss, and living plants of all kinds.  Their favorite scents are resins and woodland smells such as patchouli and vetivert.

The gnomes are ruled over by a king, whom they greatly love and revere. His name is Gob; hence his subjects are often called goblins

ASALAAAAAAM ALAYKUM !!!! 😊😊😊😊😊 I really want to send my friend a super inspirational and uplifting and motivational QUR'AN ayah that will make them feel special and loved by Allah swt and just great!!! Please do you know any good ones ????? Jazak Allah kheyr ! ❤ may Allah bless u TONS sis ! ameen

Wa Alaikumussalaam habibti

Jzakallahu khairan wa ameen.

Sorry for the late reply. I had to think about some Quran verses that personally speak volumes to me. It’s all about reading the Quran for one’s self to find peace and contentment in it. This is the first thing you should recommend your friends.

I recommend Surah Taha, Surah Yusuf, Surah Rahman, Surah Duha and Al-Inshirah

As to the verses. Many ayat behold a lot of tranquility for the believers. Some might not speak immediately to someone, but once you understand them you really feel the love of Allah. Please note that every verse has also a context it is in. So please do consider also reading the whole surah of the Tafsir for them. There’s a lot of wisdom inside. (There are more than I am able to list and they are not in some sort of order)

Surah Taha, Verse 1:
طه

Ta Ha.

We have not revealed the Quran to you that you may be unsuccessful.

Nay, it is a reminder to him who fears:

تَنزِيلًا مِّمَّنْ خَلَقَ الْأَرْضَ وَالسَّمَاوَاتِ الْعُلَى

A revelation from Him Who created the earth and the high heavens.

The Beneficent Allah is firm in power.

His is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth and what is between them two and what is beneath the ground.

And if you utter the saying aloud, then surely He knows the secret, and what is yet more hidden.

Allah– there is no god but He; His are the very best names.

———–
AL-FATH , Verse 4:

He it is Who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they might have more of faith added to their faith– and Allah’s are the hosts of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Knowing, Wise

——–

Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 50:

Therefore fly to Allah, surely I am a plain warner to you from Him

——

Surah Al-Hadid, Verse 21:

Hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and to a garden the extensiveness of which is as the extensiveness of the heaven and the earth; it is prepared for those who believe in Allah and His apostles; that is the grace of Allah: He gives it to whom He pleases, and Allah is the Lord of mighty grace.

Verse 22:

No evil befalls on the earth nor in your own souls, but it is in a book before We bring it into existence; surely that is easy to Allah

So that you may not grieve for what has escaped you, nor be exultant at what He has given you; and Allah does not love any arrogant boaster:

——

Surah At-Taghabun, Verse 11:

No affliction comes about but by Allah’s permission; and whoever believes in Allah, He guides aright his heart; and Allah is Cognizant of all things

Surah An-Naml (60-62)

Nay, He Who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down for you water from the cloud; then We cause to grow thereby beautiful gardens; it is not possible for you that you should make the trees thereof to grow. Is there a god with Allah? Nay! they are people who deviate.

Or, Who made the earth a restingplace, and made in it rivers, and raised on it mountains and placed between the two seas a barrier. Is there a god with Allah? Nay! most of them do not know!

Or, Who answers the distressed one when he calls upon Him and removes the evil, and He will make you successors in the earth. Is there a god with Allah? Little is it that you mind!

—-

(16) And certainly We created man, and We know what his mind suggests to him, and We are nearer to him than his life-vein.

(17) When the two receivers receive, sitting on the right and on the left.

(18) He utters not a word but there is by him a watcher at hand.

—-

(12) Surely the might of your Lord is great.

(13) Surely He it is Who originates and reproduces,

(14) And He is the Forgiving, the Loving,

(15) Lord of the Arsh, the Glorious,

(16) The great doer of what He will.

Surah Luqman

Verse 22:

And whoever submits himself wholly to Allah and he is the doer of good (to others), he indeed has taken hold of the firmest thing upon which one can lay hold; and Allah’s is the end of affairs

Surah Az-Zumar, Verse 53:

Say: O my servants! who have acted extravagantly against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; surely Allah forgives the faults altogether; surely He is the Forgiving the Merciful

—-

Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. (2:257)

—–

Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 156:

Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return.

—-

Surah Al-Isra, Verse 44:

The seven heavens declare His glory and the earth (too), and those who are in them; and there is not a single thing but glorifies Him with His praise, but you do not understand their glorification; surely He is Forbearing, Forgiving.

Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 43:

He it is Who sends His blessings on you, and (so do) His angels, that He may bring you forth out of utter darkness into the light; and He is Merciful to the believers.

Surah Ghafir, Verse 14:

Therefore call upon Allah, being sincere to Him in obedience, though the unbelievers are averse:

Surah Ghafir, Verse 15:

Possessor of the highest rank, Lord of power: He makes the inspiration to light by His command upon whom He pleases of His servants, that he may warn (men) of the day of meeting.

Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 214:

Or do you think that you would enter the garden while yet the state of those who have passed away before you has not come upon you; distress and affliction befell them and they were shaken violently, so that the Apostle and those who believed with him said: When will the help of Allah come? Now surely the help of Allah is nigh!

Surah Ar-Room, Verse 5:

With the help of Allah; He helps whom He pleases; and He is the Mighty, the Merciful;

(This is) Allah’s promise! Allah will not fail His promise, but most people do not know.

—-

Surah Ash-Shura, Verse 28:

And He it is Who sends down the rain after they have despaired, and He unfolds His mercy; and He is the Guardian, the Praised One.

Surah At-tur, Verse 48:

And wait patiently for the judgment of your Lord, for surely you are before Our eyes, and sing the praise of your Lord when you rise

And in the night, give Him glory too, and at the setting of the stars.

Surah Ibrahim, Verse 12:

And what reason have we that we should not rely on Allah? And He has indeed guided us in our ways; and certainly we would bear with patience your persecution of us; and on Allah should the reliant rely.

Surah Al-Isra, Verse 20:

All do We aid– these as well as those– out of the bounty of your Lord, and the bounty of your Lord is not confined

There are three iconically potent female archetypes in Hispanic culture, La Malinche, La Llorona and La Virgen de Guadalupe. Walk into any Latino household and your chances of seeing some representation (you might even find an entire shrine) of la Virgen de Guadalupe is very high. In Hispanic culture, she is the ideal; the revered Catholic icon, the purest form of woman. She is the mother of God and the saint we pray to when our loved ones are on their deathbeds, or after we have just purchased a lottery ticket. In her form we are told that this is the impossible standard to which we should aspire to, which is the most obvious form of bullshit. If I had read the last sentence I just wrote out loud to my Grandmother she would scold me for the disrespect.

La Malinche, or Dona Marina, the slave and mistress of the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes has become the Hispanic representative of female sexuality. She is iconic in our culture for playing a role in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire and later, for giving birth to one of the first Mestizos (a person of European and indigenous American ancestry). The Mexican people would likely not exist without her. Malinche is known for having seduced Cortes and because of her role in the war, people believed she was treacherous and disloyal. To this day in Mexico the term malinchista refers to a disloyal person. La Malinche’s blatant example of sexuality is something that many Latinas are told from a young age to deny and/or repress, otherwise we run the risk of being called a whore, a woman asking for it. There is not one thing more disappointing than this to a Hispanic father.

La Llorona is something else entirely. First introduced to me as a child, I knew her story to be folklore, however in reading texts about the history of feminism in Mexico, I learned people believe she was a real woman who existed sometime in the 1500s. She was a woman betrayed. Known to be the most beautiful woman in Mexico, she married a man outside of her rank. Later, when he decided he was done with her, and he left to be with another woman, she drowned their two children in a nearby river out of despair and anguish. The legend is that she roams rivers and lakes in Mexico and the American southwest searching for her children, wails coming from the pit of her soul, she is doomed to live eternity in “the in-between”, not quite on Earth, not quite in the afterlife. Hispanic parents tell their children this story as a cautionary tale so they don’t wander far from home, but in my research I’ve come to believe that one of the reasons La Llorona’s story has been perpetuated and has survived as long as it has is because it reinforces a belief of the Hispanic patriarchy that women are inherently sinful and must be controlled. This belief is ancient and still prevalent.

These three figures represent the roles available to women in Mexican heritage, la madre, la virgen, y la puta. (you are either a mother, a virgin, or a whore). Many Chicana feminists (such as Sandra Cinseros and Ana Castillo, just to name two) are invested in exposing and deconstructing the ideological structure which is severely limiting. The belief is that if we dismantle damaging ideologies which are revealed and perpetuated through stories about “Our Three Mothers”, as they are sometimes referred as, we examine the virgin/whore dichotomy and reconceive the role of women in Hispanic culture.

Feminism is an ideology I was not raised with, in fact I would bet that most of the women in my family wouldn’t even call themselves a feminist. This is not because they don’t believe in equality, but more that the ideas of feminism were just not something they’ve given second thought to. The patriarch of my family my stern, lion-like Grandfather, was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico and immigrated (illegally, at first) to the States with his parents and fifteen (yes, fifteen) siblings in the early 1950s. My Grandmother, aunts, and my mother were too busy working, raising families and throwing impromptu BBQs for no reason other than it was a nice day and they could, to consider things like reproductive rights or, even though it was something one of my aunts (and myself) have lived through, sexual violence. My Grandmother, for example, certainly did not have the luxury to sit back and think about her status in a male-dominated world and what did it all mean?, while raising six children, keeping up their modest home, dealing with racist neighbors (my family was the only non-white family in town at the time) and getting back-handed by Grandpa if she raised her voice at him at the dinner table. A thing like feminism was reserved for gringas…

They came to me when they were little children, the whole family. I’ve had them since River was, like, nine. He was the most beautiful child you’ve ever seen, like a little Elvis. They’ve all got different names, who the hell knows. Heart, Liberty, Summer. Every week they’re changing. Earth, Wind, and Fire.
They said they wouldn’t do commercials, because they were vegans. I said, “What the hell’s a vegan?” I thought it was an alien. I said, “So I guess you don’t do Kellogg’s commercials. I guess you won’t do McDonald’s.”
