the media is wrong

The problem isn't that Hamilton is "mediocre", it's that Hamilton and LMM are anti-black.

(in reference to this post: )

listen, i’m not gonna say the mcelroys are bad for not knowing an extremely popular and critically acclaimed piece of media isn’t actually the Perfect Progressive Musical it could be. Hamilton is a piece of media that made an honest effort and ended up with some unfortunate implications that anyone who isn’t super well educated in the subject wouldn’t be able to see.

plus like, i really have to wonder about the motivation of someone sending me an ask that says “hey, that thing you’re getting into?? actually, if you squint, the creators are problematique, so you should stop enjoying it.” If you wanna exhaust yourself trying to find media and creators who have never done any wrong, suit yourself. personally, i’d rather enjoy myself a little before i die.

Hey look, it's a buzzfeed article about movies pulling the same shit that you got ostracized for disliking about DS9: katymacky(.)tumblr(.)com/post/158751057109/

this is a REALLY GOOD ARTICLE and despite my general distaste for Buzzfeed I’m actually really surprised at its genuine empathy here.

It’s really vital to recognize that queerbaiting EVOLVES with the times, and that the instances written about in the article - Yellow Power Ranger, LeFou, Reboot Sulu and Unnamed Kissless Husband - are basically included to SHUT US UP.

DS9 and Star Trek in general used queerness to accentuate the taboo and the wrong and nothing else.

The same can be said for media created around that time like Babylon 5, Farscape, Firefly, etc… (I only list sci fi here because it’s what I watch and have the most experience with)

Modern media uses queerness to absolve itself of committing the wrong taboo of non-inclusion by having it in the form of a token and nothing else.

Neither of those are acceptable representation.

And again, we deserve better.
WH official: We'll say 'fake news' until media realizes attitude of attacking the President is wrong
Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, said Monday that the administration will continue using the term "fake news" until the media understands that their "monumental desire" to attack the President is wrong.
By Chris Massie, CNN

Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, said Monday that the administration will continue using the term “fake news” until the media understands that their “monumental desire” to attack the President is wrong.

“There is a monumental desire on behalf of the majority of the media, not just the pollsters, the majority of the media to attack a duly elected President in the second week of his term,” Gorka, a former Breitbart editor who also holds a PhD in political science, told syndicated conservative radio host Michael Medved.  “That’s how unhealthy the situation is and until the media understands how wrong that attitude is, and how it hurts their credibility, we are going to continue to say, ‘fake news.'  I’m sorry, Michael.  That’s the reality,” he added.

Trump and his staff have repeatedly used the term “fake news” to discredit reporting on the presidential administration from mainstream outlets such as CNN and The New York Times, often offering no evidence to back up their disputes with those outlets’ stories.

Earlier in the interview, Gorka was asked by Medved whether he would acknowledge that the administration’s controversial statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day was “at least questionable in being the first such statement in many years that didn’t recognize that Jewish extermination was the chief goal of the Holocaust.”

Gorka replied by calling criticism of the statement “asinine,” arguing that it was motivated by the media’s desire to attack Trump.

“It’s a Holocaust remembrance statement,” Gorka said.  “No, I’m not going to admit it.  Because it’s asinine.  It’s absurd.  You’re making a statement about the Holocaust.  Of course it’s about the Holocaust because that’s what the statement’s about.  It’s only reasonable to twist it if your objective is to attack the President.”

Gorka also sparred with a caller who contended that “every time you call everything fake news, it just turns everyone except your hardcore fans off.”

“Not everything’s fake news,” the caller added.

“You know, I would beg to differ,” Gorka shot back.  “Every single organ that generates these kinds of stories comes from the same clique of media organs that predicted that Hillary (Clinton) would win and that Brexit wouldn’t occur.  I know what fake news is.  And it’s coming from those organizations. It’s time that you yourself understood that as well."

So the Trump Administration outright says they’ll continue to de-legitimize the media until they toe the line and stop "attacking” (i.e. disagreeing with, or presenting facts that disagree with) the President and his agenda.

Samwell Social Media part 3/?

Nursey’s Snapchat

I just made and entire post about Nursey without mentioning poetry, his moms, or the word chill????? Is this really a Nursey post?

Just saw a social media post captioned “setting up a holiday party for underprivileged kids ❤️❤️❤️”

so, a few things:

1) I really, really, really don’t like it when people perform good acts for social media attention. It’s dehumanizing and narcissistic. Just do it without milking it on your social media platform.

2) As a professional, who is both someone who grew up as an “underprivileged kid” and a current educator, I’m really annoyed at the way we romanticize childhood poverty and systemic trends of oppression for Feel Good Non-Profit™ Culture

3) I really hate the way such deficit based language about children is used behind their back. And often, this deficit based language is used as a Feel Good Non-Profit™ marketing pitch to get more people to donate or volunteer with certain organizations. Don’t work with a group of young people if you’re going to refer to them with dehumanizing language that you won’t actually say to their face. (and if you actually do use deficit based language with young people, stop now. I can speak from experience that it takes a lifetime to un-internalize)

Use the language that was used for the event, for the kids, for the community. Just say “I’m setting up for [event name]!” Reducing it to just a “party for underprivileged kids” is, once again, just for social media “look how selfless I am” attention.

Why are the gods so displeased that they have sent the four horseman of the apocalypse into the wlw community?

Conquest : Queerbaiting and badly written shows.
War : Division in the community over petty shipping wars
Famine : Lack of good representation or 3 minutes of screen time.
Death : literal death to wlw characters. rip.

What I would like to see in the coming weeks and months

  • A recognition of how titanically wrong most major media outlets’ predictions were. Not only did Hillary not win 80%/20% -  news outlets had her chances of winning between 80-98% - Trump won the electoral college (EDIT: and possibly the popular vote). Republicans won the House AND the Senate.
  • An acknowledgment that perhaps Hollywood celebrities and national media outlets are wildly, embarrassingly out of touch.
  • Given the many utterly outrageous statements Trump has made, an attempt to understand why a majority still voted for him rather than Clinton.
  • Really, any attempt at all to understand the majority of the country, rather than demonizing and dehumanizing them

What I will likely get

  • “Trump supporters are literally Hitler”

So…white people are reblogging a gif set packaging moments from S4 OITNB supposedly showing the parallels between what the show did and real live actual tragedies like Ferguson, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, etc. in order to praise the (white) writers for “going there.” Things like this make it so obvious that so many of these people aren’t about solidarity or allyship but simply performing faux progressivism in defense of white racism.

White corrections officers accidentally killing Black folks in custody is a white lie (and not the little “innocent” kind, lol at white being equated with innocence but that’s a post for another day). It is purposeful and malicious and systematic and systemic. But white people don’t wanna hear that. Those aren’t the truths white people laud as “realistic” and “important.” It’s so telling that so many white people can look at what was done to Poussey and think “Yes, this is what is actually happening. Yes, Black people are dying in police custody but it’s accidental and the white people are like me–well-meaning–it’s just an accident that can’t be prevented…so sad that white man’s life has been ruined. If only the Blacks would understand and not be so angry.”

This. Is. White. Propaganda.

And if any white folks had been paying attention to Ferguson, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, and all of my other brothers and sisters turned into hashtags by the police, they’d know how shit narratives like the one the nonblack writers of OITNB cooked up only further service white supremacy and state sanctioned violence against Black people by humanizing and purposefully creating empathy for a murderous white cop in a world where people think saying Black Lives Matter is a call for police to stop “doing their jobs” and be murdered.

Take note of the white folks who’ve never said anything about Ferguson, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, etc., but suddenly are passionately defending OITNB. Know that it's because white people are falsifying Black people's stories so that they’re palatable entertainment for a white audience (i.e. profitable). These people don’t care about the movements and social justice language they just picked up long enough to silence Black folks critiquing whiteness. They care about protecting whiteness. They are defending the privilege of whiteness to falsify Black truth. They are defending the privilege of whiteness to control the narrative and then telling us to be happy and grateful that “at least white people are listening.”

If they actually cared about us and were the allies they claim to be, they’d close their mouths and attempt to learn something. Instead, actual real life Black people, especially Black WLW, are telling these white people it’s garbage and wrong and inaccurate and harmful and antiblack and white people are saying “shut up and let me enjoy the show.”

still the wrong story

Amazing. American mainstream media are yet again telling the wrong story about the election, this time about Jill Stein’s recount push.

They’re so busy interviewing mudslinging Republican “experts” who are poo-poo-ing it and getting balance with po-faced Democrat “experts” who are also dismissive, and pro-and-con scientists who can debunk each other, that they are completely missing the actual story.

The story is this: millions of everyday Americans don’t trust the American electoral system, to the point of (currently) over five million of their hard-earned dollars, and the reason they don’t trust it is because the Democratic Presidential nominees have now won two popular votes in recent history, and lost the election, and a bunch of other wonky shit has gone on as well.

Like, that is actually a good reason to doubt the outcome, no matter how well it can logically be explained by the Electoral College system. If people think they are living in a democracy, and then the majority’s votes count for less just because they live in cities… surely that can’t sit right. It doesn’t seem legitimate, even though it’s following the rules. Throw in Russian hacking, Nazis in the Whitehouse, fake news, and statistical anomalies, and only people completely out of touch with the common consensus could possibly wonder at the grassroots push for an audit or recount of at least the key states in question. Frankly, if I were American, I’d be insisting on audits in all the states at this point. It would be money well spent.

Furthermore, Stein’s motives are completely transparent, despite all the hoo-ha about her possible ulterior motives. She is doing her job, which is being a politician, and she’s doing it well. Sure, she comes across as a crackpot on a lot of her policy issues (and Americans, our Australian Green party used to be like that too, until they got their shit together and started to be a more holistic party, so there’s hope your Greens might improve too). But this is strategic and it’s clever:

  • She’s aware of the popular dissatisfaction with the lack of auditing and wonky election practices, in this election in particular. It makes sense that with the current high-profile moment and her unique position, she can win serious kudos for her and her party by championing this effort, and she  has. That is good politicking.
  • Her party does actually seem to have a history of fighting for election reform, so this is consistent with their stated goals. This is about as high profile as you can get in terms of making that issue public. It’s now definitely in the conversation, and she’s created momentum that will carry on for some time, no matter the outcome. That is good politicking.
  • Some people are calling her a patsy for Clinton and the Democrats, but that’s almost beside the point. Maybe she is, maybe she isn’t. The point is that Stein wins no matter what the recount finds. If there is an irregularity, Stein and the Greens are heroes for allowing it to be found, and if it’s an error in Clinton’s favour and it means Clinton wins after all, the Democrats owe the Greens a favour without Stein ever having publicly stumped for them. If there isn’t an irregularity, she’s still made her point on the world stage, satisfied the majority of voters it was a clean(ish) election, while also clearly distancing herself from Trump, for whom there is obviously a lot of hate right now. That is good politicking.
  • If there’s money left over, her party can do some more stuff about election reform and raise their visibility. That is good politicking.

She and her party saw their moment and took it. This is win/win/win for her and the Greens. The only possible downside is that Trump will hold a grudge, which is potentially no small thing. But as he himself said the election might be rigged, he’d have to do one of his crazy public about-faces to call her out on it.

All of that said, going by most of the mainstream media, you’d never know that this was a politician doing her job, or that it’s pretty clear the American public don’t trust their elections. Because the mainstream media are still playing the game of This Expert vs That Expert, as though they learned nothing at all about false equivalence in the election race they just covered.

Russia's Ambassador To Turkey Shot And Killed In Ankara, Russian Official Says
Andrei Karlov was shot "multiple times" Monday evening as he delivered a speech at an exhibition opening in Ankara, Turkish state media reported.

Editor’s note: This is a developing story. Some things that get reported by the media will later turn out to be wrong. We will focus on reports from police officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene. We will update as the situation develops.

look i love kyle rayner’s stupid turtle mask

PETTY reminder that celebrating the death of a character who serves as crucial positive lesbian representation is homophobic. Being happy that the lesbian is gone specifically because it gives opportunity to the m/f couple is homophobic. There is nothing inherently wrong with m/f relationships in media but celebrating the removal of same-sex relationships because they now no longer stand in the way of the m/f ship is homophobic. It was homophobic then. It continues to be now. Anyone who celebrates Lexa being dead and boasts in the faces of Clexa shippers that their representation is gone or purposefully flaunts the likelihood of their straight ship happening as a direct result of the death of the lesbian is homophobic. Remember kids, is costs approximately $0.00 to choke.

Modern headcanons

Yooooo but just imagine

Christine with a beautiful Instagram and every picture gets a ridiculous amount of likes

Meg getting into sassy twitter roasts on the daily

Erik using Nadir’s social media because he wouldn’t be caught dead making his own accounts

Nadir suspecting something is wrong with his social media accounts because he’s suddenly following random people / pages

Raoul with a generic Facebook account and nothing much on it, he’s not that into social media

Meg and Christine with a vlogging YouTube channel that has a pretty decent following

Erik always being up to date with the latest tech and news

Nadir sneaking photos of Erik and half jokingly threatening to post them

Said photos being deleted by Erik

And Erik has a Snapchat just to keep tabs on everyone, including Nadir,Christine, and even little Meg.
Can you imagine him angrily staring at his phone watching Nadir’s story like “It’s 4 in the bloody morning why are you STILL OUT”

Ok so

I don’t have the full story and I refuse to pry further because that just spreads possible misinformation but from what I understand

A player has potentially (I say potentially because the name is not going around, but that doesn’t make it any less severe) been outed as queer by a partner

This. Is. So. Fucked.

Period. End of sentence.

Like I don’t care if you think “well they were on x dating app, they had to see this as a possibility”

Sharing any sort of information from any sexual partner on social media is disgusting, disrespectful, and wrong. I don’t care if they’re it’s a regular person, a pro-athlete, or the fuckin Queen of England. Posting anything online that you have not been given explicit consent, by every party involved, to post is wrong and straight up illegal.

This is not me defending whatever player this is. This is me defending the fucking personal privacy of another human being.

If you think anything to the contrary or think that this was okay on even a microscopic level you can fuck right off
