the magic of vill

making city sigils

last week, something big happened in my city. i don’t really want to get into the details–that’s not the point of this post. the point is i did a protection spell. the thing is, a lot of my magic is very spontaneous. i don’t usually know what i want to say before i do it–i just get an idea, grab what I need, and go.

what i grabbed on the day i did my protection spell was a map. what i traced out as i spoke was the heart, veins, and bones of my city. and now, i’ve used that to make sigils.

here’s how you can do it for your city.

if cities have souls, can it also be said that cities have bodies? … people might sense a bodily intimacy with particular urban spaces that goes beyond the mere fact that being in a city also implies a physical experience. that sensation, we suggest, may have something to do with the way urban spaces leave their traces on human bodies, that is, make a mark on the memory or unconscious of human beings through repeated sensory stimuli.

the city is my churchyou can take my picture, you can take my name, but you’re never gonna take my city away, ‘cause you can burn it to the ground, oh, or let it flood, but it’s in my blood. [a mix for urban magic and worshipping the city you stand in.]

Granite and marble, chert and miscellaneous sedimentary deposits. Rocks that once leaped and flowed when the world was born in fire. And do you see the cobbles on the streets? Surely every single one of them, at some time, has had blood on it. Everywhere you look, stone and rock. Everywhere you can’t see, stone and rock! Can you imagine what it feels like to reach down with your bones and feel the living stones? And what did we make from the stone? Palaces, and castles and mausoleums and gravestones, and fine houses, and city walls, oh my! Not just in this city either. The city is built on itself, all the cities that came before. Can you imagine how it feels to lie down on an ancient flagstone and feel the power of the rock buoying you up against the tug of the world? And it’s mine to use, all of it, every stone of it, and that’s where witchcraft begins. The stones have life, and I’m part of it.
—  Terry Pratchett, I Shall Wear Midnight.

la ville rose“urban spaces have spirits, and cities have souls. some are dangerous, menacing, but also seductive; others are marked by beauty and excess; others again by their dreariness or spookiness. these are contagious qualities that are said to seep into the character of the people living in such cities.” – thomas blom hansen and oskar verkaaik, urban charisma [a mix for the city of toulouse.]
