the lucky one 2012

anonymous asked:

I'm sorry if this is bothering but do you know when holy ground was written? Assuming the line "note on the door with the joke we made" from dianna's bday party in April and EHC (I believe EHC was written with ed in May if I can remember correctly) could possibly been around that timeframe assuming both of those songs are about the same person.

You are very much not bothering me, anon; I am always happy to answer any and all such questions as I am able to.

I am afraid that I don’t know precisely when Holy Ground was written. I do think, however, that sometime between May and June 2012 is a reasonable hypothesis.

  • The liner note would suggest at the outside that the song post-dates the 21st October 2011.
  • According to Jeff Bhasker, who produced Holy Ground and The Lucky One, the lyrics to both were complete already by the time of his first meeting with Taylor (x//x). This can have taken place no earlier than the 19th March, when Taylor returned to LA from Sydney, where, by her own admission, The Lucky One was written in a hotel room (x).
  • If we accept (i.) that our ‘note on the door with a joke we’d made’ is  the note on Dianna’s door and (ii.) that it was written at her birthday party, then Holy Ground can not have been finished before the 28th April 2012.
  • Bhasker has said previously that his four-hour studio session with Taylor took place on a particularly uncomfortable ‘Summer day.’ Taking him at his word, the earliest estimate for production (and, thus, the date by which Holy Ground must have been written) is the first week of June; the latest the last week in August. Given that Red’s lead single debuted on 13th August (and, less convincingly perhaps, that she was shooting promotional materials in July) the later date is unlikely.

When it is considered, in addition to these criteria, that May-June 2012 was, as you observe, a period of special activity in Red’s production history, there is no obvious incongruity. It is entirely plausible that Holy Ground should be a close contemporary to several other songs, which also have been associated with Dianna. Notably, Taylor wrote Everything Has Changed between the 15th May (when she and Ed met in Phoenix, for a first writing session) and the 28th May (when they were photographed together outside a studio in Santa Monica). Treacherous and Come Back…Be Here probably were written at roughly the same time: co-writer Dan Wilson has suggested that he and Taylor met over two days in the spring of 2012, with the final recordings being made a few weeks later. If we are right that Come Back..Be Here was a reaction specifically to the visit to London which Dianna made with Naya Rivera in mid-May, this writing session most likely took place between the 17th and 25th of that month.
