How Nations Age

I’ve been thinking about this lately, so here’s how I personally headcanon the nations aging.

  • We never see any actual infants in Hetalia. Since these people are born representing their nations and likely don’t have anyone to raise them from infancy, they’d come into existence already old enough to have some level of independence. So, old enough to walk and talk and eat solid food and the like. Therefore, nations come into being around the rough human age of 3-4.
  • From the time they are born, nations will age rather slowly (but steadily) as their government and society develops and they kind of begin to define who they are as a nation. The growth rate at this stage can vary.
  • As a young nation gains more control over its own affairs, it will prosper and grow faster. 
  • However, this growth is often stunted if the young nation is a protectorate or colony, or otherwise being strongly influenced by a foreign power. Nations will generally stop growing at a prepubescent age if they are still being controlled by a foreign power (this is why the micronations are generally young).
  • When a young nation/colony has a strong push for independence, they will start growing again even before they gain that independence (this is why America aged so rapidly).
  • Nations age more quickly during periods of mass upheaval (like American revolution), or events that drastically affect their land and people (such as a civil war, invasion, foreign occupation, or war that takes place heavily on their own soil). This aging is usually comparatively fast for a nation and may even approach the rate at which humans age from time to time.

Example: America would have been discovered by European nations bearing an appearance age of about 3. He would have aged as the American colonies began to develop but would have begun to stall just before puberty. After England leaves him alone for a while, he starts yearning for independence and begins to age again. By the time the revolution starts he’s about 14. He continues to age during the revolution, and by the time it’s over he’s about 16. He stays pretty steady until the civil war, then ages another couple of years and looks about 18 by the end. Since WWI took place mostly off American soil, he didn’t age much during WWI. He aged to 19 during WWII due to more involvement and a more direct homeland connection through Pearl Harbor and territories in the Pacific theatre.

Visitors (A Growing Family Fic)

Summary: Nic and Ashur stop by the palace to visit the newest addition to the Damora-Bellos family.

Nic knelt on the cool marble floor so he could hug the two small figures that jumped into his embrace, shaking them lightly to the point where all three were laughing. When they separated, he held them at arm’s length so he could assess his nephew and niece. Prince Mathias, practically a spitting image of his father but with bright blue eyes that always shone with  more intelligence than his seven years of age let on, was smiling widely. At his side, several inches shorter, was Princess Lianna. Her soft, light brown curls fell down the sides of her blush colored dress.

Even though Nic wasn’t related to the Damora-Bellos children by blood, he had been best friends with their mother, Queen Cleo Bellos, for as long as he could remember. They had always considered the other to be family, so naturally he had been a part of the lives of her son and daughter.

An earlier post today says that ANON thinks RF wrote himself out of the series with the letter in S5X12. Do you mean that Gansa & Co. decided it was time for him to go but allowed RF to write his own letter so he could control how he was going to be written out of the series? Or do you think RF himself asked to be written out of the series at the end of S5? Very interesting either way.

This is a complicated and smart question. Neither, imo.

Here’s what we can say with some degree of certainty:

  • Rupert thought he was being written out in season 5 and wrote a beautiful letter. By his own admission he, Lesli, and Gansa wept when it was read for 5.12. It seems like it was a goodbye.
  • We have a tweet from a Homeland casting directer (since deleted) that says they had to convince him to stay for season 6.
  • The writing for Quinn’s character, since season 4, has been uneven, at best - tortureporn et al. And they clearly didn’t know what to do with the Carrie/Quinn romance. 
  • Given that Nina Hoss was under contract through season 7, it’s likely Rupert was as well.
  • Rupert - with class and humility -  conveyed the following in his Facebook feature: 
    1. His desire to give Quinn a hug and for Quinn to be given “a break” - arguably this reveals some degree of frustration with the writing. [Though he’s also praised the writing.] 
    2. His surprise at the killing when he read the 6.12 script.
    3. His wish that Quinn had a more recognized goodbye in 6.12. He underscored the last issue with a tweet and invitation for his followers to chime in on a better memorial for Quinn.

What does all that say to you? I suspect Rupert was somewhat frustrated and wanted a better story for Quinn - as did we all. 

Perhaps season 5 haunted him as it haunts us. We just can’t quite believe that, after bringing Quinn back from the dead in 5.12 and presenting him with 2-3 new and distinctive arcs, 6.12 was how they chose to end him. That is, with no resolution and a clumsy death.

Because, really, what tf was the point?
