the hippocratic oath

Do no Harm 7 & 13

7: Where did the title come from?

Do no harm is a phrase that is associated with the Hippocratic Oath, but oddly enough, doesn’t actually appear in it. I thought it was neat, since the story centers around the the moral crisis of everyone’s favorite hot mess doctor. The chapter titles are all translations from the old Greek version of the oath, which makes me sound a lot fancier and smarter than I actually am when all I’m doing it just copying relevant lines from Wikipedia.

13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

Oh man. Dino and I have a Mercymaker playlist that is growing by the day, so I won’t share all of that. It’s getting to be a lot. The top 5 Do No Harm tracks would be:

Coldplay - The Scientist

Rilo Kiley - Portions for Foxes

Zedd -  Clarity

Sia - I’m in Here (Dino demands there must be Sia)

The Decemberists - Make You Better

“Both of my parents are doctors. It’s all I ever wanted to be growing up, I used to practice the Hippocratic Oath. I was obsessed with it. If anyone was even gonna step on a bug, I would say, ‘Do no harm.’ It’s built into my DNA. Unfortunately, my DNA isn’t what it used to be.”

As a Pukwudgie Slytherin

this is what is means to be ruled by a selfish heart

Fuck your Hippocratic Oath, your sweet and cuddly characterizations. We are poisoned arrows and venom in our fangs.

As healers, we are not concerned looks and kind smiles. We are the ones dragging your bodies out of rubble, out of battlefields. We are the ones looking Death in the eye and saying, “fuck off,” as we take your soul and shove it back into your body.

If someone tries to stop us, we will not hesitate to strike them down. We pick who we want to live and choose who we want to kill. “Do no harm” can blow us.

We will heal you with single-minded determination regardless of consequences. Self-preservation doesn’t mean a thing if we can’t stand to live with ourselves.

Losing someone is a personal failure.

The blood on our hands is as red as the anger for ourselves. We are angry at not moving faster, angry at not preventing all this in the first place, angry at not knowing better ways to do this.

Later, we will demand better healers to be our mentors and lose ourselves in research and experiments.

They say it is our ambition, but we feel it as frustration of not being enough.

We do not care with gentleness and compassion.

We care with harsh words, fierce dedication, and sacrifice to ourselves.

We will laugh at our friends when their silly antics hurt themselves and wipe tears from our eyes as we mock them, but we will also make sure their injuries are properly treated and not neglected.

Hurt the people we care for, and you will understand why dying is a mercy.

Our poison will not be quick.

You will suffer where we can see you.

We are hearts, and the heart can be a terrible, wicked thing when it wants to be.

This is what it means to be ruled by a selfish heart.

And if we happen to cook or bake, you can bet it’ll be fucking delicious.

AU where Kanjigar dies nine years earlier and instead of getting picked up by Jim Lake the amulet gets picked up by harried single-mom-trying-to-get-her-kid(s)-to-school Barbara Lake.

Barbara Lake who has a fulltime job, one mysteriously missing (soon to be ex) husband, and less sleep than a medical student. Barbara Lake who’s just trying to keep seven year old Jim and Toby from accidentally killing themselves when they get left with Mrs. Domzalski. Barbara Lake who has no time for magic or destiny, but who gets stuck with it anyway. Barbara Lake who will fight for her child’s future, but who also swore a Hippocratic oath and is going to do her best to Do No Harm, right up until someone threatens her family.

Barbara Lake, Trollhunter extraordinaire and local ER doctor, running off of coffee and prayers. It turns out Trollmarket has some excellent babysitters.

  • Toby and Jim get clued in early and mostly sworn to secrecy, but they’re still way too willing to pick a fight for Jim’s mom. Jim is also a burgeoning master chef, who keeps experimenting with troll cuisine and nearly burning his face off trying to make dinner for everyone.
  • No one knows why little James is so determined to feed everyone, Barbara’s cooking is wonderful by Troll standards.
  • Barbara is a brilliant lady with a good grasp of anatomy once she gets her hands on some troll medical books, thanks Vendel! She’s definitely a pragmatist, willing to go for weak points and low blows, but she tries not to do permanent damage.
  • She and Blinky end up as nerdy BFFs remarkably quick, and he and Arrrgh adopt the kids.
  • The confrontation with Draal goes down much as in canon, except Draal is even more of a dumb teenager and Barbara is surprisingly sympathetic. She ends up taking him under her wing, and he’s the cool older brother Toby and Jim need. He knows how hard a Trollhunter parent is, and has lots of emotions about the fact that Barbara isn’t pushing her kid aside.
  • One of the things that does change from canon is that Strickler is principal of the elementary school- probably filling in as a favor to someone on the school board. He’s surprisingly good with kids, even if he does keep quoting classical literature to them. Also, he’s really popular with the PTA parents.
  • It takes he and Barbara even longer to figure out each other’s identities, and before they do they strike up a friendship over worrying about Jim’s nascent martyr tendencies. Post reveal there are lots of awkward parent-teacher meetings. Strickler has a not-so-tiny nemesis crush.
  • Jim adores Strickler, who takes him very seriously and treats him like a tiny adult. Barbara doesn’t tell the kids that Strickler is evil at first, to keep them from doing anything rash. It’s a legitimate concern, when Jim and Toby figure out they get suspended for trying to jump their principal in the teacher’s parking lot.
  • Claire is the most popular girl in the second grade, if something of a tomboy at seven. Jim and Toby are in awe of her, but they become friends fast after Strickler encourages them to talk. She’s also Barbara’s favorite patient who has racked up quite the broken bone count over the course of her childhood. She’s still settling into her more controlled grown self, but everyone agrees she’s going to be formidable when she’s older.
  • Claire’s dad is the head of the PTA, so the Nunezs get involved quickly. Claire sees her little brother get stolen by monsters mid-season and investigates on her own for a while before getting clued in and joining Team Lake.
  • Draal and Nomura’s relationship is much more current, and definitely had something to do with Kanjigar’s death. Draal has Issues. Barbara, who is all too aware how relationships can go wrong, just wants the kids to be happy. As an adult, she’s also more leery of the anti-changeling prejudice, and keeps trying to win Nomura and Strickler over to the side of good. She probably eventually suceeds.
  • The Trollmarket is still hesitant to accept a human Trollhunter, but they warm to Barbara in time. She’s a mother, just like Deya the Deliverer once was. Maybe she’ll finish Deya’s work.
  • Barbara is just trying to save the world, not get fired, keep all three kids now in her care alive, and finish filing her divorce papers. She triple brews her coffee these days.
  • Her co-workers are really concerned about her because she keeps coming in late with strange injuries. On the other hand, weird accidents in Arcadia Oaks are at an all time high, and they need every hand on deck they can get.
  • Warrior medic Barbara Lake, out of her armour and ready to start treating collateral injuries immediately. No wonder Strickler is smitten.
  • Whatever happens to James Lake is eventually relevant and there is so much drama.
The Hippocratic Oath

Before the doctor becomes a doctor, he/ she has to sign the hippocratic oath. A code of ethics with relations to his profession of how he would handle the body of a patient. I was just thinking about the duty of a minister and how he/ she should handles a soul in application.

The Hippocratic Oath

(Modern Version)

I SWEAR in the presence of the Almighty and before my family, my teachers and my peers that according to my ability and judgment I will keep this Oath and Stipulation.

TO RECKON all who have taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of the art of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient.

I WILL FOLLOW that method of treatment which according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous. I will neither prescribe nor administer a lethal dose of medicine to any patient even if asked nor counsel any such thing nor perform the utmost respect for every human life from fertilization to natural death and reject abortion that deliberately takes a unique human life.

WITH PURITY, HOLINESS AND BENEFICENCE I will pass my life and practice my art. Except for the prudent correction of an imminent danger, I will neither treat any patient nor carry out any research on any human being without the valid informed consent of the subject or the appropriate legal protector thereof, understanding that research must have as its purpose the furtherance of the health of that individual. Into whatever patient setting I enter, I will go for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief or corruption and further from the seduction of any patient.

WHATEVER IN CONNECTION with my professional practice or not in connection with it I may see or hear in the lives of my patients which ought not be spoken abroad, I will not divulge, reckoning that all such should be kept secret.

WHILE I CONTINUE to keep this Oath unviolated may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine with the blessing of the Almighty and respected by my peers and society, but should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse by my lot.

Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humility and awareness of my own frailty. - The Doctors’ Hippocratic Oath

“mercy saved genjis and reapers lives!!”

1) tbh we only know that she saved genjis life. i dont think the stuff she did to reaper could possibly have been absolutely necessary to keeping him alive, it seems more to me like she was experimenting and used him as a way to test something new. which. is exactly why i joke that she probably never took the hippocratic oath. so like it seems like mercy ruined gabriels life and thats why i dont like her

2) she saved genji and yeah hes okay now but do we even know if he had any say in what was done to him?? probably not. this goes for reaper too and thats why i dont like mercy part 2

Sebastian Stan as Dr. Chris Beck in Ridley Scott’s The Martian

Dr. Beck graduated cum laude from the Yale School of Medicine where he was also a recipient of the Norma Bailey Berniker Prize, awarded to graduating students that best exemplify the disciplines and precepts of the Hippocratic Oath. Also served as a captain in the USAF Reserve.

I’m rewatching Into Darkness, and Pike is giving Kirk the dressing-down of his life, accusing him of “using blind luck to justify playing God!” and oh my word what would Pike say if he was alive long enough to hear about McCoy bringing Kirk back from the dead??

Like McCoy was this close to getting a dressing-down for smuggling Kirk onboard in the first film, and here he’s violated his Hippocratic Oath (”I will not play at God”), again for Kirk.

I think that Pike would gladly give McCoy the worst lecture of the doctor’s entire life, and then buy him a drink because somebody’s gotta watch out for that kid, and Pike’s not going to be around forever.

[Bashir- “Now, that is ridiculous! I mean, if anything, by spending your free time in the bedroom, a place you intimately associate with Keiko, you’re actually expressing a desire to be closer to her, during her absence. It’s quite touching, really!”]

O’Brien- “Exactly! Exactly! See, you understand!”

O- “Now why can’t she see that? Why can’t she be more like…

B- ”More like…?“

O- ”Err… A man, more like a man.“

B- ”So… You wish…”

What it means to be British, from Captain Britain and MI-13 #5 (2008)

Faiza Hussain is a British-born Pakistani medical doctor whose powers were triggered by an alien weapon while she was working triage during the Skrull Invasion of Great Britain. Later, she became the wielder of the sword Excalibur and joined MI-13 as the steward of the Black Knight, Dane Whitman.

Blessed as it is with mythical properties, Excalibur is capable of slaying even immortal beings such as spirits, gods, and vampires, but Faiza takes her Hippocratic Oath very seriously, and even uses her powers in a non-offensive capability to neutralise her foes. She can disassemble anything- including people- into their component parts, manipulate them on an atomic level, and reassemble them, restoring them to their original condition and repairing any damage. She can also immobilise groups of foes, and has even demonstrated the ability to resurrect herself and others from death by falling from great height by restoring any damage sustained at the precise moment of impact, effectively healing herself as the impact forces kill her.

Faiza lists her three main fandoms as cricket, British superheroes, and the S.A.S. In the Age of Ultron continuity (Earth-61112), she was chosen by Brian Braddock to succeed him as Captain Britain before he sacrificed his life to try and repel Ultron’s takeover of the United Kingdom. Although this version of her hasn’t been seen since the Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders limited series published during Secret Wars, Faiza’s creator Paul Cornell has expressed an interest in the possibility of having her take on the mantle in the 616 continuity.
