The Hick from French Lick
Larry Bird was born in West Baden, Indiana and raised in nearby French Lick. Bird grew up poor, lost his father to suicide in high school and turned to basketball to escape his family troubles. In 1974 Bird received a scholarship to play college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers. After less than a month on campus, he dropped out of school, finding the adjustment from his small hometown to the large student population of Bloomington overwhelming. He returned to French Lick where he got a job as a garbage collector.
