The list of Korean Sageuks

Q. If you don’t mind me asking, can you recommend some good sageuks?

Well, I don’t know what kind of Korean historical drama/movie you would like. (Trendy? Traditional? Political? Romantic? Timeslip?) So, I made the following list of Korean Sageuks (mostly since 2000~) in chronological order. You can pick up anything you want. :)

★ = Good for beginners (You don’t have to know much about Korean history in advance)
◯ = Daebak (popular in South Korea. More than 30% viewership ratings on TV, or over 7 million tickets at the box office.)
◉ = Hallyu hit (popular in foreign countries)
↗ = Timeslip genre
♡ = Romance-centric, or Erotic
◀ = My favorites

Title in Bold + Italic  = My recommendation

Is it true SHR is Lee Joong Gi`s last Sageuk? If so I'm quite saddened yet happy for him, he connected with his character so well yet it is a shame his performance will be because of ratings in Korea.

Yes, he said it and I’m not really suprised because he’s already done so many of them, probably more than any other actor (I’m talking about playing the lead role). Who knows he might change his mind one day, but now it’s understandable he wants to have some time away from the genre.

Honestly, I think that despite the low ratings in South Korea, Lee Joon Gi is actually the biggest winner - he is receiving numerous CF offers, his fanmeetings are sold out, everyone wants a piece of him - the drama brought him international fame on the par with Lee Min Ho and thousands of new fans. Wang So will be his career-defining role that everyone will remember him for. In the end, he comes off completely unscathed by the domestic low ratings. Besides, after Iljimae (2008) all his dramas received very low ratings:

Hero (2009) - 4,7 % (* these are the average ratings)

Arang and the Magistrate (2012) - 14,3 %

Two Weeks (2013) - 9,1 %

Gunman in Joseon  (2014) - 9,1 %

Scholar Who Walks the Night (2015) - 6,6 %

Moon Lovers (2016) - 7,3 %

  • Lee Dong Wook & Lee Da Hae : My Girl (2005-2006) — Hotel King (2014) *9 years*
  • Lee Joon Gi & Nam Sang Mi : Time Between Dog And Wolf (2007) — Joseon Gunman (2014) *7 years*
  • Jang Hyuk & Jang Nara : Successful Story of a Bright Girl (2002) — Fated To Love You *K-Remake* (2014) *12 years*
  • Kwon Sang Woo & Choi Ji Woo : Stairway To Heaven (2003-2004) — Temptation (2014) *11 years*

These two…they barely had scenes together in Empress Ki, yet their chemistry was really awesome that my screen was always burning whenever they were having some interactions. They were wasted in EK, by the way. So pleeeeeeaaassseee let the same thing happen to Joo Jin Mo and Ha Ji Won. To the drama gods, we pray.

It’s possible, but I guess I’ll have to wait for at least 7 years then.
