The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

From The Wind’s Twelve Quarters: Short Stories by Ursula Le Guin

With a clamor of bells that set the swallows soaring, the Festival of Summer came to the city Omelas, bright-towered by the sea. The rigging of the boats in harbor sparkled with flags. In the streets between houses with red roofs and painted walls, between old moss-grown gardens and under avenues of trees, past great parks and public buildings, processions moved. Some were decorous: old people in long stiff robes of mauve and grey, grave master workmen, quiet, merry women carrying their babies and chatting as they walked. In other streets the music beat faster, a shimmering of gong and tambourine, and the people went dancing, the procession was a dance. Children dodged in and out, their high calls rising like the swallows’ crossing flights, over the music and the singing. All the processions wound towards the north side of the city, where on the great water-meadow called the Green’ Fields boys and girls, naked in the bright air, with mudstained feet and ankles and long, lithe arms, exercised their restive horses before the race. The horses wore no gear at all but a halter without bit. Their manes were braided with streamers of silver, gold, and green. They flared their nostrils and pranced and boasted to one another; they were vastly excited, the horse being the only animal who has adopted our ceremonies as his own. Far off to the north and west the mountains stood up half encircling Omelas on her bay. The air of morning was so clear that the snow still crowning the Eighteen Peaks burned with white-gold fire across the miles of sunlit air, under the dark blue of the sky. There was just enough wind to make the banners that marked the racecourse snap and flutter now and then. In the silence of the broad green meadows one could hear the music winding through the city streets, farther and nearer and ever approaching, a cheerful faint sweetness of the air that from time to time trembled and gathered together and broke out into the great joyous clanging of the bells.

It’s Problem Sleuth day!! I spent most of it working on this GPI print, lamenting over my weird unfixable cursive g’s, and wishing I had my nice camera with me. :’)

It’s about time I do another re-read, so maybe there will be more sleuth doodles in the future? I always find myself coming back to this weird story, permanently cemented in my heart, truly a classic. <3

The Gnostic individual feels sympathy with the Unknown Godhead - there is that which awakens and says: “I am a stranger here, when all others feel at home.” They are pulled from automatism by an alien intrusion, a sense of difference - a hijacking which leads them to not only to see the divinity in all things, but to groan under the weight of that which oppresses the world and prevents its manifestation as a unified part of the All.

Nirvana feat. Kim Gordon - Aneurysm (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ‘14)

I watch this video every now and again. I return to it because it makes me feel alive in a way most other music and art does not. And while the vid features the surviving members of Nirvana, that doesn’t mean much to me. The focus here is Kim Fucking Gordon.

Whenever I try to sit down and write something, I feel there is no way to say what I want to say with mere words. I pray for magic and hope for forgiveness and understanding from the audience. I’m pointing towards something. A strange brutal ceremony perhaps. Something like Kim Gordon just letting it all out in a hideous beautiful way that exceeds the sum of its obvious parts. I want to fuck the loss of our tedious frightened minds. I wanna get into it, like a wild animal sacrifice that is the intricate flowering godhead. I want to turn our bullshit into something jarring and transcendent. A feast of death and rebirth and a life finally lived.

I used to have a serious obsession with John Coltrane. Before I joined the Army, my best friend gave me a cassette tape with “A Love Supreme” on one side and “Giant Steps” on the other. I had an old tape player with auto reverse, so it played the tape constantly in an endless loop for 3 months straight until the tape finally broke. I needed that music like oxygen. There was something in it that saw me through an impossible darkness.

Several years later, a Best Buy opened up in my town. They had all these great rereleased John Coltrane CDs. I bought a new one every week and listened to em like a monk studying holy texts. I drew pictures of Coltrane and ordered the only 3 books in print about his life. Eventually, I owned over 20 CDs.

John Coltrane died of liver cancer. He destroyed his liver as a heroin addict when he was younger. The album “A Love Supreme” was made after he kicked heroin cold turkey. Some say Coltrane died from exhaustion. He played from sun-up till sundown every day. He cut 10 records in 1965 alone.

After making some of the greatest jazz music ever, Coltrane became increasingly avant-garde until most of his band quit. He started playing with young experimental guys and a lot of the music sounds like screaming, wave after wave of noise colliding and being torn apart. Some people hate it, but I just couldn’t get enough.

When Coltrane died in ‘67 the young musicians he’d taken under his wing played at his funeral. One of the young guys took the horn out of his mouth and actually screamed while he played. I guess I can’t think of anything better to say to a dearly departed friend. The unabashed tore-open love of being fucking real.

anonymous asked:

hello ! :) sorry to bother you, but i recently watched a video on youtube titled "7 Reasons Christianity Is Bullsh*t", and while i am dubious about it, the maker of the video did bring up some interesting points that i hoped you'd be able to clear up. would it be alright if you watched it and gave your take on it? if not, i completely understand. thank you for your time.

Not a bother at all! There were a couple different options for that search result, so I’m not sure this is the same one, but I just watched the first video that came up which was this video here (if anyone else is interested in watching it, do be warned that there is profanity). The YouTuber packs a LOT of claims and statements in his video, so I won’t be able to hit every secondary point, but we’ll talk about the general overarching themes brought up in the main seven points. If there is anything I didn’t answer that you’ve got questions on or want more verse to back it up, just ask! The three major problems surrounding each point is a lack of context, a lack of understanding, and a double-standard.

1.) The absurdity of Yahweh
Here the YouTube makes the argument that God shouldn’t have to look like us. Well, he doesn’t always. The Bible says no one has seen the fullness of Father. We can’t even comprehend the fullness of His glory, we would die in His presence. Sometimes God took the form of a burning bush. Jesus took the form as a human when He came down to earth. Why? Because He had to be fully human and fully God in order to conquer death and pay the price.

He says, “Yahweh is primitive” because of the animal sacrifices. The point of animal sacrifices was to show us just how awful and disgusting and serious our sins are.

He says, “Yahweh is inept” because God didn’t magically dissipate sin. That is blaming the problem of sin on God instead of freewill; that is wanting God to be responsible for the sinful choices we make. God didn’t make a mistake, this isn’t Him trying to fix what He broke. This is man deviating from God’s will, and God offering a way of redemption. The alternative is either that we are robots, or that we suffer in the punishment we deserve for the choices we’ve made.

2.) Immorality
YouTuber is extremely confused about what God does and does not condone in the Bible; lack of context.

He makes a statement about how Jesus came to divide households and incorrectly interprets that as Jesus’ declaration of war. Have you read stories about Islamic people turning to Christianity? Their families often reject them, if not worse. It’s not that Jesus wants to divide families, but it will happen. And yes, God is absolutely supposed to come before family.

I think this is the part where he makes comments about God destroying cities and flooding the earth. Three things to remember about God’s wrath are…

  • God punishes the guilty
  • God is perfect and omniscient
  • God is rich in mercy, and always offers forgiveness and second chances to those who turn to Him

3.) Egocentric
He finds it unbelievable that humans are the focus of God’s affection.

You know, I don’t understand how everything is made up of atoms that are invisible to me, microscopic building blocks that I’ll never see with my own eyes, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s true. Just because we don’t understand something, or it seems wild, doesn’t make it untrue. God purposely created us. It makes sense that He would pay attention to something He loves.

4.) Science
He claims that science and faith are and have been at odds for centuries. Funny thing, Galileo is accredited as being the father of modern science and he said this, “God is known by nature in his works, and by doctrine in his revealed word.” Which ties in beautifully with Romans 1:20 where Paul writes, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” Many of history’s most famous and revolutionary scientists were spurred by their desire to know and understand God.

Furthermore, the YouTuber then proceeds to call scientific ideas like evolution and the Big Bang “fact” when there are many solid arguments against such.

5.) Inconsistency
Arguments exhibit a stark lack of context. There are explanations for each as, for 2000 years, people have been trying to prove the Bible as faulty and yet it still holds its merit. Also ignored is the fact that the Bible is the most historically accurate book we have, if we claim the Bible is historically faulty, than every other ancient documentation of history is void.

6.) Absurdity of scripture
He blames God’s wrath and righteousness on a lack of goodness.  With free will comes responsibility, and what we see here is the desire to do whatever we please without having to reap the consequences. God is just and cannot let sin go unpunished. We have broken God’s law, we are sinners, lies, thieves, murderers at heart, adulterers at heart, blasphemers, idolaters, we have rejected God and yet we expect His blessings? God’s goodness is found when He punishes the wicked, just like a good judge imprisons the criminals. Yet, God’s goodness is also revealed in the fact that He sent His son to die on a cross to take the punishment for our sins if only we believe. We cannot reject God’s gift of freedom while demanding release from our punishment at the same time. It doesn’t work that way.

He goes on to call Christians out for never reading the Bible they claim to revere, and I would absolutely agree. BROTHERS AND SISTERS THIS IS THE IMPACT WE ARE HAVING ON THE WORLD. We have the antidote for our soul, the Word of Life, and yet it sits and collects dust. IF WE HOLD THE SCRIPTURES AS DEAR AS WE CLAIM TO, IF THERE IS NOTHING IN THIS WORLD MORE PRECIOUS TO US, THEN WE NEED TO START ACTING LIKE IT. Our lack of respect for the Bible is shameful, and it is causing unbelievers to laugh in the face of God.

7.) Concept of the after life
Arguments can be boiled down to an altered perception on who gets to heaven and why. Like I previously stated, we cannot reject God and still expect His gift of mercy.

He starts ridiculing the idea of us being like robots in heaven but earlier in the video, he was rebuking God for not creating us as robots so that we would never sin. You can’t have it both ways, but we won’t be robots in Heaven either. And, the fact is, Heaven isn’t a place where we will just sit around singing all day. It’s eternal LIFE and we will be living it to the absolute fullest! The Bible talks about food and working. This YouTuber hates the idea that we will be servants to God, but the fact is, as Christians, we already are. Our lives revolve around serving God right here on earth, Heaven is simply the perfect culmination of a life intent on glorifying Him.

An Epitaph for Mighty Sarpedon

Ausonius, Epitaphia heroum qui bello Troico interfuerunt 16 “Sarpedoni”

I, Sarpedon of Lycia, born of Jove,
Hoped to reach heaven through my father’s godhead;
Instead, I am covered by this mound of earth
And bewept with tears of blood.  O iron Fates!
He too feels grief who had the power to prevent it.

Sarpedon Lycius, genitus Iove, numine patris
sperabam caelum, set tegor hoc tumulo
sanguineis fletus lacrimis: pro ferrea fata,
et patitur luctum, qui prohibere potest.

Sarpedon is slain by Patroclus (right) while Glaucus tries in vain to protect him.  Protolucanian red-figure hydria, attributed to the Policoro Painter; ca. 400 BCE.  Found in the so-called “Tomb of the Policoro Painter,” Heraclea; now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Policoro.

So, I took a sabbatical and played sonic adventure 2 through again for the first time since becoming attuned to the floews of majjyck, and it turns out that this game is a kabbalistic ascension metaphor and sega might be powerful reality wizards…

but hear me out.

The game makes heavy use of Tarot symbolism, specifically in the destruction of The Moon (representing illusions), and that the last image we see at the end of the game is Shadow, the ultimate lifeform, imposed over The World (representing perfect unity)

The story revolves around the collecting of 7 chaos emeralds, which have a 7 faceted cut.. These seven alchemical stones that turn our heros to gold. the seven tiers of the tree of life leading up to godhood. Even within the story itself, they clearly are metaphysical objects. Characters pull them out of thin air, the master emerald changes sizes, and is always in knuckles’ possession, but not always seen.

And consider–the prayer knuckles recites to turn the tide of the battle:

“The servers are, the seven Chaos. Chaos is power; power is enriched by the heart. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos. Only you can do this; stop the Chaos Emeralds!”

It’s also worth noting how this relates to Sega, that is to say “SErvice GAmes”, Sega itself are the creators of the games which act as the service, read: mass/group ritual

Chaos is power. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos. It’s literally chaos magic.

I think that the fact that sonic can use chaos control without a chaos emerald is worth of note. Especially with Shadow telling Sonic that he might actually be the ultimate life form. This implies so much about Sonic as a character in this game’s universe. And just as much, the choice to call one side “Dark” rather than “evil” frames the vying between these two factions in a more nuanced way, especially in that it’s a story where you have to see both sides to understand. And only when you understand boths sides of the story can they converge.

This brings to mind the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, which begins unified at Malkuth, the “Kingdom” (keeping in mind how Sonic begins by promising us he will lead us out of the city/kingdom), but then splits into two branches which cross paths at points before finally reuniting at the top where exists divine wisdom. The Tree’s split paths each are made up of 3 sephirot, which aligns with each side consisting of 3 playable characters. On the left side we have “Understanding”, “Severity”, and “Splendor” and on the right side we have “Wisdom”, “Kindness”, and “Eternity”.

The dichotomy of good/dark, instead of good/evil, brings to mind the notion of the left-handed and right-handed paths of magick and how it helps us to transpose the symbolism of the tree onto the cast of SA2. The Dark, left-hand path: Rouge the bat, who is obsessed with the splendor of gems, which in this universe are directly related to mystic enlightenment, Rogue represents the dogged pursuit of esoteric mysteries driven by their splendor, “Our unconscious desires come from [Eternity] (Knuckles’ Sephirot, which sees gems as metaphysical rather than material) , and are given form in the symbolic realm by [Splendor]”. Dr. Eggman is Severity, whose methods are at all times turned up to 11. He uses the power of knowledge to wield the power of the ARK in order to hold the world in his hands, “[Severity] is ‘the essence of judgment (DIN) and limitation, and corresponds to awe and the element of fire“. Shadow is represented by Understanding, which is the end goal of Shadow’s role, his mind is pure, but he is torn between the will of his creator and the promise he made to Maria, and his enlightenment comes when he grows to understand the world he was asked to protect.

Meanwhile, on the right-hand path we have Knuckles, represented by Eternity which, “communicates the idea of long-suffering, strength, endurance unto completion or patience.” reflecting Knuckles’ role as lone guardian of the Master Emerald. Tails represents Kindness, which needs little explanation. Finally Sonic represents Wisdom, the counterpart of Shadow’s Understanding, seemingly alike, but fundamentally both different yet reflections of one another.

In Escape from the City-the first song of the game from the hero story- the song is sung from sonic’s perspective. Even in the first verse, “Got places to go, gotta follow my rainbow!” 7 colors to a rainbow, heavy symbology of peace. There is even a literal ARC involved. “Trusting in what you can’t see, take my lead; I’ll set you free.” – “find the next stage no matter what that may be” – “trust me and we will escape from the city” – “Take my lead, I’ll set you free.” This makes no sense in relation to the story. Sonic is never helping anyone escape from the city… if you merely look at the plot!

Clearly the meaning lies elsewhere. Sonic is a godhead.  the penultimate step before the divine, still split in twain, guiding the player to enlightenment. 6 points on his literal head, even. The city he is leading us out of is not the one we see in the game, but the city of the mundane plane.

Live and Learn goes further. As the endcap of the series, the lyrics tie this all together.

“Can you feel life, movin’ through your mind?

Ooh, looks like it came back for more!

Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Can you feel time, slippin’ down your spine?

Oooh, you try and try to ignore!”

It starts, describing the pain of the human experience in. Talks about time slipping down your spine, the reverse from the flow up the spine to the divine, but rather back down into the mundane. It’s the creation of the universe, flowing from the top of the tree down.

“But you can hardly swallow

Your fears and pain!

When you can’t help but follow

It puts you right back where you came!”

This condition is unescapable without breaking away from following the past. It even says “when you can’t help”, really highlighting the coercive, entrapping nature of the mundane.

“Live and learn!//Hanging on the edge of tomorrow

Live and learn!//From the works of yesterday-ay

Live and learn!//If you beg or if you borrow

Live and learn!//You may never find your way”

The chorus reminds our tenuous grasp on the future, the ideal tomorrow. Our origins from the established real, and states that finding our way to the tomorrow, away from fears and pain, is impossible when we rely on just what we’re given on face value. Telling us to live and learn, to become the process of changing towards that ideal.

“Can you feel life, tangle you up inside?

Yeah! Now you’re face down on the floor!

But you can’t save your sorrow

You’ve paid in trade!

When you can’t help but follow

It puts you right back where you came!”

The second verse tells us that our pain in the mundane is because there is something we trade away, that because of this trade, we cannot be rid of it. What we get from the mundane world will never be enough to become untangled, un-split.

“There’s a face searching far, so far and wide

There’s a place where you dream you’d never find

Hold on to what if?

Hold on to what if?”

The final verse tells us to hold on to what if, to grasp dearly to our greatest desire to be free from a world of pain and second bests. It tells us that there is somewhere out there so fantastical that we cannot even imagine it as we are now. All of this in the background as our godhead(s) have transcended their previous forms, transformed to gold by the alchemist’s stone. The two twisting halves of the story twine together, like the tree of life.

Just venting more abt the disconnect between what terfs think being trans is like and what its actually like:

“Bullying/assault based on effeminate behavior is just redirected homophobia!!!”

Ok then why did the boys (and girls) harassing and sometimes assaulting me throughout school make especial note/observation about the fact that I “acted/walked/etc like a girl”?

“You faced bullying as a GNC male sweaty : ))) transphobia isnt real. i know that, as a gay cis women. haha reblog, syster, i felt that burn from here : ) )”

The key bit there is “gender non-conforming”. Almost like….. Being bullied for rejecting the gender assigned to me….. Almost like…. Being rejected for behaving/existing in a way that contradicts gender. If only it had a better name. One that actually described it…. Like…. Transphobia.

“But we’re trying to abolish gender! We’re actually working FOR your goals as well, you just don’t know it!! If only you stupid genderist mogais actually had critical thinking haha!! well once we abolish gender by making snarky thinkpiece articles about not shaving our legs, and shooting down other marginalized people trying to tell us about their experiences by constantly referencing some of THE most oppressed people in the world (ie, women forced into sex-trafficking or who have experienced genital mutilation), while doing absolutely shit all to help them at the same time, and only actually bringing them UP in the first place in order to downplay the marginalization and oppression of transwomen, particularly nonwhite, non-American, poor trans women, you’ll have to thank us!! Because you’ll be free of gender haha!”

Oh boy that’s great. Except it solves absolutely none of my issues whatsofucking ever because even the completely hypothetical and largely unrealistic concept of “abolishing gender” does shit all about the massive amount of bodily/sex/sex-trait dysphoria I suffer and have suffered from since, uh, like, 4. Same for every other dysphoric trans person, which is, uh, most of us.

“I’m so sorry the medical system is capitalizing off of your dysphoria like this. If only there were… Other solutions available.”

You’re right. I am being capitalized off, as is pretty much fucking everyone else on this hellish shitplanet. Are you going to take on and abolish the privatization of the medical system or maybe capitalism itself, too, or is this just another “I’m bringing this up so I can look smart and fit as many critiques of society into my praxis as possible while arguing with people, without actually EVER bringing them up on their own outside of the context of using them as conversational tools to make myself look good” things? Seems like the latter, but, y'know, what does a dumb genderist know?

By the by, what are those other options? Are you going to try to talk me out of my dysphoria? Because I tried doing that for the first 17 years of my life, and it kinda just made everything worse and sorta fucked me up/delayed my development as a human being.

When that doesn’t work, what are you going to do? Are you, perchance, maybe, just going to go full-circle with your hypocritical bullshit and start giving conversion-therapy to dysphoric trans kids to try to brainwash it out of us? Maybe I’m reaching here, but “other options” sounds a tiny bit sinister to a deeply dysphoric gal who’s dysphoria is rooted heavily in her own body and not some bullshit societal standards, like y'all seem to always think.

“Always arguing and trying to force your opinions on womyn/lesbians. What typical male behavior. Male socialization is never, ever admitting you’re wrong in an argument while women are forced to walk away frustrated.”

Oh, you mean like how you constantly hardline when your ideology is challenged, purposefully and spitefully misgender any trans women who has the godawful, stubborn gall to disagree with you, and keeping bringing up and rebranding the same tired, twisted bullshit to justify your transphobia even after it’s disproven, over and over again? Like that? God I’m sorry wanting basic respect/the correct pronouns is so horrible and aggressive of me. Wanting Terfs to stop running off at the mouth about issues surrounding trans women they have no knowledge or understanding of is just,,,, god, guys, I guess they beat me. The terfs one. We can all go home now folks.

“Well, regardless, womyn are still oppressed for their biology/reproductive role in a way that a dumb male tranny male like you could just,,, never understand.”

OH, you mean like reproductive organs? Like, uh, the uterus, or maybe the ovaries and endometrial system? The kinda ovaries I have? The kind of ovaries I possess inside of my stupid fleshbody as an intersex trans women? THOSE ovaries? I want to outright make a reference to the “the poison for Kusko” line here but this is dragging on long enough.

“Ok!! But!! Unlike crippled sex slaves from X third-world country I just now googled to have a leg up in this argument, you were never OPPRESSED for having those organs so uhm, checkmate. Also, I guess now I’m going to have to carefully avoid gendered terms when referring to you and address you in tones of thinly veiled pity because regarding you, an intersex person, as anything other than a negative exception, an aberration, and a mistake of nature would compromise my hard-line position of sex being a rigid, immutable, unchanging, and entirely binarized system where everyone has one exact experience in life or another!! It’s gonna get, like! Really bad! To the point where I’m being an ableist piece of shit and basically insinuating you have less worth as a human being than most other people, because you lack a reproductive role!! Haha. Its not hypocritical of me at all though just so you know!”

Well, Tiffany Rose Anne Terf Bangs, I guess you aren’t experiencing too much maiming or oppression yourself, right now, if you have time and inclination to be an asshole on a blogging website.

“How DARE you make light of-”

Hold up. Freeze-frame. I’m arguing more, like the evil, violent male I am.

How come, uh? How come, whenever you bring up the plight of abused/circumcised/sex-trafficked, non-white women? How come it is that you almost ALWAYS bring them up EXCLUSIVELY in the context of using them as a source of leverage in petty discourse with “genderists” on tumblr? I see maybe, like 1 post freely and independently discussing the plight of non-white, non-western, heavily-oppressed women for every 8 I see using them as a rhetorical tool to outdo trans women trying to tell you that we, y'know, oftentimes get shit on too.

That’s just kind of funny to me. Kind of odd.

Mind you, I don’t pretend to be some incredibly intelligent, educated, massively intersectional feminist praxis godhead. I’m white as hell and first-world and most of the time, just far enough above the poverty line to pay for the essentials.

I have privileges many people don’t.

But at least I have the common DECENCY to let my arguments stand or fall on their own legs.

At least I just make my own fucking points without dragging in marginalized groups I otherwise demonstrate that I give absolutely no shits about in order to one-up other people.

At least I don’t hide my spite for “genderists”, particularly camab women, behind really thin veils of feminism I really only preach when it’s convenient to tearing those same fucking people down.

I’ve got my privileges and I mostly only focus on my own issues, or issues relevant to people like me in areas where I can reach, because that’s about all my pathetic, poor, mentally ill ass can handle, but at least I don’t fucking pretend to care about suffering people when it’s really, really, really obvious I only see them as a discourse foot-stool to stand a little taller and look a little better on.

If you actually gave a SHIT about the people you’re bringing up, I sort of doubt you’d have a blog devoted to whinging about trans people on Tumblr. You might, at the very least, have a blog devoted to actually discussing those peoples’ issues and ways to help them, and invest your time there instead.

But what the hell do I know?

Not much, probably. I don’t pretend like my praxis and beliefs are the end-be-all, unlike some.

There’s a lot more I want to shriek and shake tree branches and rant and run in circles about, but I think this individual post is big enough, and I need to sleep.

Does anyone else have a pet horse in the corner of their page?

His name is Absolute Godhead? I guess?

What is this???? Have NanoPets come back into style?
