Michael Dante DiMartino: “We hadn’t mentioned Hiroshi during the previous two seasons, but I always assumed his actions still haunted Asami, so we decided to give them some closure. Here, we discover that Asami hasn’t read his letters or ever visited him in prison. When she finally does, she sees her father has become a very different man, mentally and physically.”

A lone red beret stood out against the gold backdrop. The figure was female, and had a rifle pointed down range at several bandits. There were two left, firing randomly in an attempt to shake the stoic rifle from behind her tree. Their three buddies lie still in the dust. Ignoring the vehicle - who the fuck drove in the wasteland anyway? Roads were uselessly disheveled. Cars got stuck and ran dry more regularly than water bottles - the sniper dropped another bandit. The remaining man thought better of continuing his assault and scampered off, no weapons, his arms above his head. The red beret let him go and slumped against the log to rest, keeping a wary eye on the newcomer.

Most people are not bad. Oh, they do bad things sometimes, and everyone has a little badness in them, but very few people are unspeakably evil, and most of the bad things they do seem perfectly reasonable to them at the time. Perhaps they’re bored, or selfish, or greedy, but, for the most part, they don’t actually want to hurt anyone when they do bad things. They just want to make their own lives a little easier.
