dating advice: the “captain america” rule

Context: I grew up in a family of nerds, and superheroes were always a really big part of my childhood. Captain America was a favorite, and he kind of became my family’s standard for good behavior and just generally being a Nice Person. (If one of the kids started a fight they’d get hit with, “What would Captain America think of how you’re acting?”, stuff like that.)

So when I got to high school and started dating, my mom told me something that sounds funny but in retrospect actually turned out to be really good advice:

“Date someone who treats you the way Captain America would. Never settle for less.”

And this has actually helped me so much in my dating life, through high school and into my adult years, because even if it’s a little silly, it’s been really helpful to have that standard in the back of my mind when I’m first going into a relationship.

Would Captain America ignore my calls? Would Captain America forget my birthday? Would Captain America get mad at me for cancelling a date because a family emergency came up? If the answer is no, then I know that the person I’m currently dating does not meet my standards, and that I need to break things off before they get too serious.

And your standard absolutely does not have to be Captain America, specifically. It can be any person, male or female, real or fictional, who is known for being respectful and considerate. It can even be an imaginary “soulmate” that you make up yourself. The point is to have a specific idea of how you expect to be treated by your romantic partners, and to refuse to compromise or settle for less. (Just make sure you’re holding yourself to the same standards – you can’t expect to date superheroes if you’re going to treat your partners the way a supervillain would.) This is a really good way to keep yourself from falling into bad relationships where you aren’t treated with the respect and care you deserve.

TL;DR: You deserve to date people who are respectful and considerate of you. You deserve a Captain America. Don’t settle for less.

THEY LITERALLY LIKE THE DADDY WITH THE OTHER’S PERSONALITY I’M SCHOOK

Reasons the first Mythbusters episode is great:

-shoddy camera work bc they only had one or two cameras
-they decide to strap a JATO rocket to a Chevy Impala
-they call the actual Air Force and ask “hey can we have a JATO rocket” and because this is episode 1 the response they get is “… Why???? and who are you????”
-the dirt-cheap used car they buy (to strap a rocket to, of course) breaks down as they’re trying to drive it back to the warehouse, and they have to call triple A to pick them up
-the random urban legends lady who pops in, talks about cars being sex symbols for some reason and is never mentioned again afterwards
-the Air Force people call them back, twice, just to make extra sure they know that of course they absolutely can’t have a JATO rocket for their nutso project, who even are they anyways
-so they weld on three amateur rockets instead as an approximate equivalent
-Adam welding inside the car and keeps accidentally setting the car on fire
-because you can’t safely be inside an amateur-made rocket-powered car, they decide to remote control it
-that’s right
-rocket-powered, life sized RC car. these men are living the dream
-Adam: ‘this is so exciting, I’m going to have to have a grin-ectomy’
-Jamie (yes, JAMIE) giggling wildly when it actually WORKS, somehow
-and then as an encore they disprove the myth that you can pop your stomach by drinking soda while eating pop rocks by mounting a pig’s stomach inside of a plastic skeleton and force-feeding the stomach massive amounts of soda
-I just really love the Mythbusters what a show

I’m in a total Star Wars mood right now and just have to let everyone know that Finn ist best. He’s so brave and heroic and sweet and caring and funny. He’s just such a good person and a real cutie. And I want him to please not get hurt any more in episodes VIII and IX. Please. Just. Let him be happy and healthy and work through his trauma. He’s such a hero and he doesn’t deserve what he’s going though.

The Transformers Reaction Force is indiscriminately hunting ALL Transformers, and Barricade is in their sights! This cruel cop has cheated death twice over - can he do it again?!

More secret files from the TRF have surfaced across the internet! Can you find all seven? Berserker, Dreadbot, Megatron, Mohawk, Nitro, and Onslaught are waiting for you!

man, i don't even know what to do with kenny omega man; first he and kota slaughter us with their undying love. now, he riling the shit out of okada and making mr. stoic mcsparkles FEEL things like anger, disgust, irritation and maybe, just MAYBE some grudging admiration and respect. all while kenny just sort of flirts with him in his weirdo passive-aggressive way he did with kota. he's moving on in the most masochistic way possible, i think, although that title's a nice bonus as well.

okay this turned out more about kota/kenny because I hadn’t thought about Kota at all in the context of Kenny/Okada stuff till this came into my inbox, and then the information about Kota being in the G1 came out today and just. it got away from me.

In a wonderful post that you should all check out @mithen said “Kenny alternately taunts and pleads with [Kota] through social media” and I think that’s a great way to describe it.

A theme that arose in Kenny’s Kota-related interviews in 2016 was that Kota probably isn’t even on his level anymore.

“There are precious few people that can change the face of wrestling. It may even just be the two of us. So I’m going to stay here in New Japan, doing my best and waiting for him. (At the G1 finals) I finally surpassed him. I was chasing Ibushi for eight years and finally outgrew him. I hope that’s inspiration for him, right?” - Kenny Omega, Aug 28 2016 (as translated by Chris Charlton (which kenny retweeted))

He’s spent eight years chasing Kota. He wants Kota to come to him this time. He’s been waiting for him in NJPW. He’s been giving him “inspiration.”

Kota defeated Kenny the only two times they’ve ever been in singles competition against each other. Kota has also had matches against Okada at least twice that I know of (not counting Tiger Mask W, who is, of course, an entirely different person) and lost both times. Beating Okada certainly would put Kenny on a whole other level. Especially beating him clean which is something Kenny has been very focused on.

Kenny doesn’t just want to win. He’s made that clear. He wants to beat Okada. Because he’s not just after the belt and the power that comes with it. He’s after the knowledge that he’s better. Better than Okada. Better than Kota Ibushi.

if you look at it like that, one might almost say that he’s been baiting Kota in his current run for the title. I’m better than you. I’m better than you. I’m better than you. I’m doing things you never could. Come home and prove me wrong.
