the film that changed my life

I really hope not muh has changed

I really hope they don’t change the appearance of the other ninjas that much. It’s really iconic and their personality grew with those faces. Change always happen I accept that, but they should change it in its own glory. Something that people will remember as its own thing. I don’t want people to say that the series changed just because of the film’s popularity.

I grew up on this show and I treasure it. I’m one of those people who learned something from there.

Sorry for being dramatic. I was just hoping that it sticks with its roots. I am looking forward to the new season, but I would cross my fingers the day they air it hoping that they’re the same characters that led me to being creative. I would write fanfictions of this show then this led me to actually pursue writing.

Amazing how a little show can change someone’s life.

“It’s probably under the moonlight that we see that black boys can be blue, can be sad and sullen and intimate,” he said. “It’s under starlight that we see them differently, or that we get the chance to.”

“Because we rarely see ourselves in those hues or under that gauze. We see ourselves in the harsh police light or the amber of street lights, but what is it when the reflection of the sun in the moon is sitting on these bodies. What beauty can we see?”

If y'all have not seen Your Name yet, GO WATCH IT.
This is, in my opinion, the greatest animated film I’ve ever watched. The cinematography, color schemes, fluidity, and minute details made this an amazing experience. I cannot give it enough praise.

Right down to the character traits changing with each switch that happens… it’s enthralling. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to never see a shooting star again in my life, so yes do this.

I made a post about the whole live action Aladdin movie and my girl Naomi as Jasmine but I’m gonna make another one now that it’s official because Twitter is a mess rn and I’m really conflicted about it all.

Here we go:

1) I really love Naomi and if you follow me you know this, and I’ve been waiting of her to get some recognition like this for so long because she’s a really talented actress and she deserves success. I’m proud that she landed the role, she can definitely pull it off and I understand that she took the role because she’s not a big actress and this will definitely change her life but-

2) The cast for Aladdin should’ve been Middle Eastern. The animated film was based off of a Middle Eastern story and the movie itself starts with a song called ‘Arabian Nights.’ But apparently this wasn’t clear enough for Disney when they were casting for this movie. Disney sent out casting descriptions looking for actors and actresses of Middle Eastern and Indian descent. Apparently Disney doesn’t understand that poc aren’t interchangeable.

3) Honestly I blame Disney for all this. They should’ve known better.

4) Don’t come at my girl Naomi with bullshit like saying she isn’t pretty enough to be Jasmine or saying she isn’t a good actress because she is. I’ve been seeing a lot of backlash on all this and while I agree that Disney should’ve cast a Middle Eastern actress for Jasmine, I will not tolerate any slander for Naomi on any irrelevant shit like her looks or her acting. Naomi deserves better than that.

5) While there is definitely a colourism problem when it comes to casting in Hollywood, don’t erase the fact that Naomi is a woc and don’t call her white just because she’s biracial.

6) This isn’t like the whole ScarJo thing with GITS and it isn’t whitewashing. It’s a whole different thing. Disney was the one looking for actors of Indian descent instead of just actors of Middle Eastern descent like they should have, and it’s really their fault that a Middle Eastern actress wasn’t cast. Naomi auditioned for a role that was asking for people of Indian descent like her, but Disney should’ve just held auditions for Middle Eastern actresses to be faithful to the source material instead of making it seem that poc are interchangeable.

7) Disney and the director (who is white) are mainly at fault here. Disney has done a lot of stuff like this I’m not surprised. Also, the director should’ve been Middle Eastern too.

8) I’m disappointed that my girl Naomi is gonna get a lot of hate for this role because I love her and she doesn’t deserve this mess. Again, Disney should’ve looked for a Middle Eastern actress. (WB and DC can y'all cast Naomi and save her from all this pls?)

9) On the other hand (no I’m not defending Disney, just adding some more facts on why Disney made this casting decision) the animated film took place in a fictional place called Agrabah and there were some Indian culture influences in the film (Jasmine’s palace being based off of the Taj Mahal) and although it took place in a Middle Eastern area, the film kinda blended stuff from other cultures and that lead to Disney being unclear about it all and looking Indian actors for these roles instead of just Middle Eastern actors.

10) We’ll have to see if they change the location of where the story takes place to explain why Jasmine is Indian while Aladdin is Middle Eastern. They could do that to justify the whole thing, but for the millionth time, Disney should’ve had the entire cast be Middle Eastern (I don’t know if Genie counts because that’ll just be voice work and he’s not human).

So yeah, I’m happy Naomi is finally getting big roles but I don’t want it to happen like this and it makes me sad. She deserves better, and there’s a Middle Eastern actress out there who could’ve had the opportunity for this role who also deserves better.

Please don’t send Naomi any hate tho. This is mainly Disney’s mistake.

Happy 2nd birthday, Cinderella 2015! (March 13, 2015) with some of my favorite tags from last year’s post:

#such a pure movie #this movie is my life #this movie changed me #the costumes are enough reason to watch this #I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH #perfection  #THIS WAS SUCH AN UNDERRATED MOVIE #i love this film so much it’s so magical #what precious children #i should watch it again tonight to celebrate

Beauty and the Beast isn't what Tumblr's been saying it is.

I can completely get over Emma Watson being Belle for the sheer amount of representation that’s in the film. What representation?

 Let’s begin (spoiler alert!):

1. Black People in France. Yes, honey. For the first time in my life, I walked into a widely released period piece that doesn’t ignore the existence of black people. Not as mere servants and slaves, but as actual fucking court members and townspeople. Also, interracial couples. Y'ALL.

 2. Le Fou. I was concerned about this, but he actually undergoes character development. He eventually abandons Gaston and has a change of heart (Disney-style, but I’ll take it). The scene with him “dancing with another man” at the end is led up to- it’s not just random. It doesn’t send the message that gay people are stupid and deserve to be mistreated (Mrs. Potts literally tells him he deserves better), which were my main concerns for this film. TL;DR, the LeFou plotline isn’t what Tumblr made it out to be, I promise.

 3. The Gender Fluid Character. There is a scene in a which a character normalizes a man in a dress in a positive way. I was expecting him to be mocked, but this doesn’t happen! (Also, I believe this is the same character LeFou dances with at the end).

 4. Belle teaches a child to read/ LeFou realizes he can’t read. Watson aside, the actual perils of living in 17th century France are explored, like the Plague, and also the importance of literacy. As children’s literacy is very important to me, I LOVED this.

There’s more, but I think the representation needs to be supported (listen, I almost never see myself in a period piece, I was expecting this cast to be vanilla as hell) and Disney needs to know that we want more of it.

ALSO: to the white and non-black POC who straight up lied about the representation in this film, I SEE YOU.

So for those of us keeping score at home, after Yousef No Chill Acar got the call from his soulmate asking to meet up, he peaced the fuck out MID-FILMING the Hei Briskeby video and, logically also must have
-ran home (could have power-walked but lbr he sprinted)
-slammed the door open to the kitchen and begged his mom to make a romantic carrot-based fast-breaking dish STAT
-changed his entire outfit because he had to look fresh af for his date with the light of his life and future mother of his twelve children Sana Bakkoush

My Own Private Idaho (1991) – When I turn twenty-one, I don’t want any more of this life. My mother and father will be surprised at the incredible change. It will impress them more when such a fuck-up like me turns good than if I had been a good son all along. All the past years I will think of as one big vacation. At least it wasn’t as boring as schoolwork. All my bad behavior I’m going to throw away to pay my debt. I will change when everybody expects it the least.

anonymous asked:

So are you Jewish just because Jake Gyllenhaal is Jewish or...

Great question! Despite my parents and every single other member of my entire family being Jewish, I, as a small infant, decided to became a proper Jew because I, a newborn child born into a Jewish family before Jake Gyllenhaal had even starred in a movie, thought that if Jake Gyllenhaal was doing it, I must do it too. In fact, I base all my life decisions on what Jake Gyllenhaal does. At the age of 5 I decided to change my ethnicity to Swedish and English and Swiss-German because Jake is Swedish and English and Swiss-German. Also, I loved Jake’s role in the 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain”, an emotional story about two gay cowboys, and Jake’s dedication and acceptance towards the gays that I even decided to become one myself (a gay). Everything I do is based around Jake Gyllenhaal.

SHOULD I WATCH GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

okay listen.

listen.

idk if u have seen the first film.

and u need to watch the first film to understand the second, which is, arguably, the better story of the two.

now, the first film. it’s. its a film, okay. its a movie. its ur typical bad guy is gonna destroy the world protagonists enter in STAGE LEFT & whilst they have a couple bumps at first they TEAM TOGETHER and SAVE THE WORLD bc they are Good Folks despite their questionably legal professions!

great!

like, it’s a decent film. it’s funny, it’s action packed, there’s a lot of heart to the characters. it SETS THE STAGE real well.

but the thing is it leaves u feeling kind of “eh whatever” UNLESS U FOLLOW IT UP WITH THE SECOND MOVIE.

film 1 is genuinely very good for worldbuilding and character setup, and, imo, not that great if you’re looking for a film with powerful emotional heart and a strong narrative message. like dont get me wrong, it’s good. it’s fun, it’s entertaining, and u get some warm fuzzies at the end. it’s originality is decent, considering the inherent originality of the setting of the film, but in terms of “wow, that was so creative, i never saw that coming” content … it’s average. like, “wow, that movie changed my life, i’ve got so much to think about now”, it’s …. okay. like it’s good, but it’s not genius, u know? it ain’t art.

vol.2, on the other hand? KNOCKS THAT STUFF OUT OF THE BALL PARK.

this film is ART.

u got character-centric storytelling. u got powerful narrative metaphors w strong and Good life messages. u got excellent character relationship growth, u got genius in the creativity department, u got originality, u got unique and complex villains, u got some TOP NOTCH JOKES, u got bammin’ slammin’ action sequences, u got GORGEOUS visuals, u got the most incredibly incorporation of song into story that i have EVER SEEN.

and. AND. on top of that, it takes so many of the vague attempts at subversion of Generic Superhero Tropes in film one and REALLY GOES TO TOWN WITH THEM, in that it is one big Think Outside The Box. the whole story subverts, deconstructs, and rebuilds some of the most problematic trends in superhero – or in fact, most generic action-y – storytelling.

PLUS, on top of all that, it explicitly shows characters on screen engaging in some really healthy behaviours. it has three separate female characters with three separate independent arcs, none of whom are sexualized. it allows male characters to be emotional and vulnerable and it delves into complicated heavy issues like breaking the cycle of abuse, or the many insidious layers and effects of toxic masculinity.

the entire story is about deconstructing and subverting toxic masculinity. and it is told so well.

and, on top of all of that Excellent Content, u literally, my friend, feel as though u are immersed in a particularly colourful gotg comic book for 2 and a half hours of your life.

WHAT an icon, tbh

and so u see, anon, guardians vol.2 takes all the excellent premise content that vol.1 set up – rag tag gang of criminal losers accidentally become a family and save the world bc they’re Good people – and really expands on that beautifully. it takes the universe its built for itself and it tells a genuinely Good and complex and emotional story within that universe, about the characters that it’s set up for itself.

and it is, truly, in every sense of the word, an ensemble superhero film. every character has their own individual arc, which are simultaneously independent of each other but also strongly interrelated bc the whole point of the story is that they’re a family whom loves each other. EVERYONE has an arc. and they’re all satisfying. they’re all important. they’re all powerful, even if they’re humorous or cute or kind of ridiculous at times.

and then, u know what happens, anon? u know what u get when u have a whole film, a whole 2 hours, that explores its characters in such depth?

u get a whole new perspective on vol.1, on that first, mostly decent generic-ish superhero film, and then u have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE re-watching the first one. bc u are invested in these characters now! u know where they’re going! how much they’re gonna love each other! how much they’ve dealt with in their lives! u have so much emotional context. so that first movie? it becomes important. it becomes relevant and poignant, when juxtaposed to the narrative of the second one, to the arcs in the second one.

truly? truly? what a way to write a story. what a WAY. i wanna do that someday.

so.

SO.

u should., ,,,, imho … in my humblest onion ….. Please Watch Guardians of the Galaxy. bc if u havent seen the first one, u cant understand the second one, and personally, i think that guardians of the galaxy volume 2 is genuinely one of the most important films that marvel studios has produced to date.

Crea Magazine, July 2017: Kyungsoo interview

[D.O.] is a main vocal of the well-acclaimed performance group EXO, and has gained popularity for his calm air. We went to Seoul to hear more, starting with his first romantic comedy.

Afternoon in Seoul in a studio by the Han River - he entered quietly and appeared suddenly at the corner I was sitting in, waiting for him.

“Konichiwa.” I rose and greeted thoughtlessly in Japanese, caught off guard. He bowed with an honest smile, replying with “konichiwa.”

Gray jacket and sneakers. Pale skin and thin, silver-framed glasses. The outfit made D.O. seem like an unassuming college freshman more than a celebrity.

He has been balancing acting with EXO’s activities for three years. In South Korea, where it takes time to be recognized as an actor, he stands out from even within EXO for featuring in projects alongside movie stars like Ha Jungwoo and Shin Hakyun.

South Korean artists often make their actor debut in school-life dramas, but in D.O.’s case, he’s left strong impressions acting as an alter ego (IOIL) and as a psychopath (IRY). Even his film debut (Cart) was a social critique of the treatment of precarious workers, where his character’s mother led labor strikes.

“Maybe because I go by my birth name for acting, apparently some who’ve seen me in a drama or movie are surprised to learn ‘that guy is in EXO.’ But to me, there’s no such distinction between singing and dancing as EXO or acting for a drama or movie. It feels natural to change for each circumstance. All I think about when choosing a role is if I want to try being him.”

His first romantic comedy, the webdrama Be Positive which released last fall, is a social phenomenon with over thirty million views.

“Hwandong dreams of becoming a movie director. He’s bright and restless, completely different from any other role I’d had, so he was novel. […] A lot like Hwandong, I try to be positive about everything. But I don’t seem to have the energy to start dancing on the streets (laughs). I don’t really like spicy food either. Ochazuke, kasuzuke! Even in Korea, I often visit Japanese restaurants. (When someone who works at SME) asks if I didn’t go to one just yesterday, I can’t lie about eating sushi again (wry smile).”

Ok so, anti Kylo Ren people - I don’t understand them. Not in the sense that I can’t understand why someone wouldn’t like Kylo - you like what you like or not - but it’s the analysis of the character, something you can interpret on a sliding scale of better or worse accuracy, that strikes me as profoundly odd. It’s completely in defiance not in just to what we’ve been given in the material but also to the things the directors and actors have said themselves explicitly. Which is just…weird. It’s like alternative facts land. It gets especially weird when comparing him to Anakin, which antis always seem to do in a way that treats suffering as a vulgar balance beam of precisely measurable and predictable quantity and quality.

“Unlike Anakin, Kyle Ron grew up with 2 parents who loved him”

No offense but - so?? Barring the very few wrongheaded outliers who label Han and Leia as abusive and uncaring (and to whom antis seem determined to sniff out and then cling to like a barnacle as a way of judging the wider fandom), most of us recognize the genuine parental love Han and Leia have for their son. My question is since when has love alone ever been enough to keep a young man from falling into darkness? Especially when said young man is growing up in a complicated family situation. If that were the case our world would be a less fucked up place than it is now.

Yes, Han and Leia loved Ben. But guess what? You can love your child and still be a dysfunctional family. You can care a lot for your kid and still make bad choices. You can still try to do your best and fail miserably. You can even do these things and inflict damage because you love them so much. Leia recognizes this - she thought she was doing good in sending Ben away to Luke for training. She was wrong and the decision hurt rather than helped, regardless of her intentions. She said so in the fucking movie.

I find it funny that the people who are vehemently against the idea of love, either from Leia or Rey or Luke or whoever, playing a part in Kylo’s redemption because they think love doesn’t redeem bad men and the notion is toxic are the same people who think love should have kept Ben Solo from becoming Kylo Ren in the first place. That’s some outstanding cognitive dissonance. The idea that because Han and Leia loved Ben and he grew up in a materially comfortable setting compared to his granddaddy somehow eliminates for him profound suffering and turmoil or immunizes Han or Leia from making long-lasting errors as parents and human beings is laughable to me.

I grew up with a super critical and moody father. It often felt like he didn’t like me or my brother. It was only later that my dad confessed that he thought he was being helpful by chewing us out all the time even though it had the opposite effect on us. And my dad loved the shit out of me. But he didn’t realize the damage he was doing and it wasn’t intended but his own flaws kept him from realizing that and by then, the damage was done and there was no taking it back. Granted, I didn’t join a murderous regime, but then again I don’t live in a galaxy far, far away.

To refresh, reminder that these are canon facts: 1. Han admitted to being uncomfortable around Ben because of his powers. 2. According to both Carrie (”We neglected him a little”) and Adam Driver (”having these incredible powers and not having his parents really be around”), and supplemental material (Bloodline) that Leia and Han ran a contentious household with their work keeping them divided at times. 3. Ben didn’t even know about his true heritage and he found out not through his family but through someone outing his mother as Vader’s daughter. By then he had already been sent to Luke to learn to control himself.

And honestly, to reduce the Solo/Organa family situation as being informed above all else by the love Han and Leia had for their son is to completely erase the strength that outside forces had in tearing the family apart.

Antis will unfavorably compare Anakin’s life to Kylo by saying “Anakin was a former slave who was then manipulated by Palpatine so it makes him more understandable” but like uh Ben was preyed upon by a dark entity since he was in the womb - since he was in the womb. Mama Leia says even says in the movie that it was Snoke who seduced their son, so I don’t get what distinguishing Palpatine’s manipulations while erasing Snoke’s does except make anti-Kylos look like hypocrites.

And then there is this whole “Han offered Kylo redemption and he didn’t take it so that’s that!”

Yeah. Han offered Kylo a chance to come back. It was the last thing he did. And he did it 6 years after Kylo fell. And after 29 years of constant struggle and misunderstanding that constituted Ben/Kylo’s life. He did so at Leia’s prompting. Not that he didn’t want his son back too - he did and he was sincere about it - but he also showed more doubt than his wife. This is gonna sound harsh but from an in-universe perspective and certainly from the character’s perspectives that’s not good enough. That’s not to downplay the love with which the gesture was made or the wrongness of Kylo’s decision. But what Han offered in that moment was just that - a moment. And redemption needs more than a moment, it requires a journey. Han even acknowledges his failures in the last moments of his life, hoping that Kylo will someday forgive him too.

What Han did wasn’t showing a way back, it was a more of a drop-everything-and-run-away-with-me proposition that did not resolve all the underlying issues subsequent actions that led to their estrangement in the first place.

Again, there is a certain irony that anti-Kylo/anti-redemption folks who quip this line that Han was offering redemption and Kylo rejecting it and killing him therefore his chance are over are often the same ones who scorn the idea of Rey or Leia playing a role in Kylo’s redemption. Yet (putting aside that this is mischaracterizing how most of us envision the redemption arc going) by taking the position of the former, aren’t you contradicting yourself with the latter by acknowledging that yes, redemption can be given through love? Because that is what is being said when you say Han had the solution.

At any rate, the way back must be something that Kylo finds on his own, not have given to him, with others serving as influences and inspirations but not as his patrons of good. This whole analysis of redemption being closed to Kylo Ren, of him being a “privileged white boy” who threw it all away or of his life being so comparatively better than Anakin’s thus rendering any parallels between them moot is just wrongheaded. There is a lot we don’t know yet and have been promised by those involved in the film to see, including Kylo’s “humanity”. If you’re one of those people with the viewpoint that I have spent this entire post taking down, my honest to god non-snarky recommendation is that you either adjust your reading of the material and change your expectations or not see Episode 8 at all. You will be profoundly confused, angered or disappointed otherwise.

Telling specific stories about personal matters can start the debate that is needed today, and that connect you with realities that you had no idea were connected. Film is a tool of change… I’m connected with parts of the world, a few I wasn’t even aware of, and others I wasn’t paying attention to, wasn’t paying attention to a connection the films are reestablishing somehow. I think the most dangerous thing today is to feel alone, to feel that your issues don’t matter because there’s so much shit going on on the planet… If they don’t feel we’re here, if they don’t feel we care, if they don’t feel like we’re following their stories and there to support them and that the injustice they’re living today matters to us, if we don’t find a way for them to know this, that is what I fear. That will cause damage that will take so much to repair. All of these broken families and broken dreams. And I think film is exactly that. Film can take a very specific voice and put it in the minds of everyone. So being in this festival reminds me of that power. And I go, like, “Fuck yes, the cinema is needed more than ever!” (x)
