Falasha - Exile of the Black Jews (documentary)

anonymous asked:

Do you have any resources/reading recommendations about Ethiopian Jews? Histories, ethnographies, narratives, anything at all. Book, article, or scholar recs would all be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

I don’t know why all of sudden I’ve been getting all these anons asking for resources on different Jewish communities… This is the fourth one in a row. Is it all the same curious anon? Or a Jewish Studies class suddenly assigned a paper? :P But I’m happy to help.

There’s a pretty solid overview article on Ethiopia at the Jewish Virtual Library, so that should point you in good directions. Some of the “big names” in the field of Ethiopian Jewish studies are Don Seeman, Hagar Salamon, Shalva Weil, Tudor Parfit, Emanuela Trevisan Semi, and Steven Kaplan. So if you can find anything by them it’s solid. As examples, I would recommend (the bolded books are ethnographies, the other ones are historical or sociological analyses):

You can look through my Beta Israel tag for more things I’ve posted, including one of my most popular posts to date, on the tattooing traditions of Ethiopian Jews, based on this article. Hope that helps! Let me know if you need anything else.
