the fact that i've seen them in person will haunt me

Hey! Regarding the sixpenceee fiasco I've been reading her posts and stories for like years and it might just be because I usually skim but I don't recall any specific stories that target mental illness. Do you have any clear examples??? Rly shocked tbh bc I used to love her

I’ve been seeing the stuff go around for a couple of years now and I admit at first I didn’t pay it much attention, which is a shame because a lot of those call out posts had good links that are now all gone because of people deleting. As a result, a lot of the initial stuff that made me start thinking more critically about sixpenceee’s posts have been deleted. I’ve spent the last few days trying to source them again via people’s new urls and internet archives, but literally 90% of the links are gone.

So, I’ve done a bit of digging of my own, and I’ve managed to find some still live posts that I think illustrate what I’m saying a bit better. I’ve screencapped them all and will be hosting the images myself independently of a specific post, so the links should always work.

I’m specifically focusing on the content of this ask here, with posts that use mental illness as entertainment, or treat it in the same way as regular “creepy” (i.e. horror) content.

  • The case of Margaret Schilling is a post about a woman in a psychiatric hospital who died after getting lost in the building, and her body wasn’t found for many weeks. There is a short paragraph at the end about how the hospital is apparently haunted by Margaret now, but the majority of the post focuses on her being mentally ill and the suffering she must have felt being lost and dying of cold and exposure. There’s also a picture of the stain her decomposing body left, so beware of that. It’s tagged #paranormal.
  • The Mentally Ill Man Who Cured Himself With a Gun is a post about a man with serious OCD who tried to kill himself by shooing himself in the head, resulting in brain damage that “cured” his OCD. The photo is of a man with a gun to his head, if that will bother you. It’s tagged as a science post.
  • Short Creepy Story is a story from Reddit where the “creepy” event is a schizophrenic woman acting strangely because of her hallucinations. That’s it. Dude’s mum is schizophrenic and he goes upstairs to find her in the bathtub thinking she’s in The Little Mermaid. The title is “short creepy story” so like, yeah.
  • The Child Star is a story from Reddit which focuses on children being sexually abused and not understanding what’s going on, and the police interviews with one of the grown up children who is now clearly suffering from mental illness thanks to the trauma. (Full story)
  • The Suicide Orphan is a story from Reddit which focuses on an orphan that drives people insane and results in them committing suicide, and I know that this isn’t the only example where sixpenceee posts things that use suicide as the main element of a horror story, which is exploitative and also I personally think it’s inappropriate to use something that comes as a result of serious suffering and imply that it was the creepy ghosts that did it. (Full story)
  • “Psychopath” post includes a link to a quiz where you can see where you “fit in on the psychopath sprectrum”. I’ve seen people mention her using outdated terms in her posts and so this is here as proof that it does happen, and also because “do you have a severe personality disorder?” is a bit of a cheap entertainment trick in my opinion.
  • Karin Catherine Waldegrave is a post about a woman who replies incessantly to her own posts on social media, believing she is the target of a conspiracy. It’s clear she’s likely mentally ill. The post is tagged #creepy.
  • Chinese Water Torture is a post about the torture method that drives victims to extreme stress-related mental instability, and is here both because of that and because the fact that it’s tagged #creepy, which doesn’t seem appropriate.
  • The Edmonton Train attack video shows someone apparently in an altered state of mind through drugs or mental illness (or both) attacking someone on a train. She gifed a video which has since been deleted but a different video of the attack can be found on Youtube, and described it as “insane”.
  • Drawings of a Young Schizophrenic Boy is exactly what it says – a bunch of drawings from a young boy suffering from schizophrenia. The boy is quite obviously distressed by his hallucinations but the post is treated like the other paranormal posts, designed to shock and scare. The post is also tagged #creepy, which is inappropriate. (Close up of caption and tag, as the image is difficult to read)
  • Made By a Paranoid Schizophrenic Patient is another drawing by a person suffering from schizophrenia, also tagged #creepy, and this one with a self-promo in the caption.

I also found a post where sixpenceee addresses the claims of ableism. She says she agrees on the points made about films and stories portraying the mentally ill/physically disabled as “scary”, and that she tries to avoid using words like “insane”. She also asks people to differentiate between her paranormal/creepy posts and her scientific posts. However, she still continues to frequently refer to things as “insane”, both as descriptors and to self-promote her blog (1, 2, 3).

This covers the things I’ve seen people claim she does, but if anyone has any other links (especially things saved from earlier posts like this) feel free to add on.

Gossip

The townfolk of Storybrooke apparently have nothing better to do than to gossip like high-schoolers. Robin overhears.

a/n: posting this regardless of being rushed and un-edited. contains some 3x18 spoilers.

————————————————————————————–

Regina and Robin were having a conversation. From where she was sitting - it looked to Tinkerbell like the conversation was light hearted, and fun. Like they were teasing one another and thoroughly enjoying the attention from the other. It made her smile… they’d finally found each other… and it was clear to anybody - even those who knew nothing of the spell revealing them to be soul-mates/true-loves whatever you wanted to call it - that they belonged together.

‘So, what uh- what do you know about that?’

Tinkerbell was snapped out of her trance of watching them and turned her attention to David.

'What?’ she asked.

'You’ve been watching them quite intensely for the past fifteen minutes.’ Snow chimed in. 'And come to think of it - you and Regina have been rather close recently… you must know of whatever is going on between them.’

'Between who?’ she tried playing innocent.

'Regina and Robin.’ David said.

'Oh… right… yes.’ She said.

'So…?’ Snow asked.

'What?’ She asked - still playing the part of innocent.

'So… what’s going on?’

Her resolve broke and she grinned. 'They’re perfect for each other, don’t you think?’

Snow frowned. 'I don’t know… Regina and Robin? I don’t see it working… not long term.’

'Oh but you’re so wrong. They’re made for each other.’

'I’m going to have to disagree with you there.’ David said. 'Regina is the evil queen - she had Robin hunted for years. She is everything he stands against.’

'No.’ Tinkerbell shook her head. 'They are actually made for each other.’

Snow frowned. 'What aren’t you saying?’

Tinkerbell looked back over to the pair - sure enough they still only had eyes for each other - so she was safe.

'You cannot tell anyone.’ She said. 'But… years ago - before the curse, Regina came to me, looking for help and so… I helped her track down her true-love. The man she’s supposed to be with.’

'And…?“ Snow asked.

'It was the man with the lion tattoo.’ She grinned.

Snow and David exchanged a glance. 'Robin has a lion tattoo… on his wrist.’ David said.

Tinkerbell nodded enthusiastically. 'True love, soul mates… whatever you want to call it.’

'Regina… and… Robin?’ Snow asked.

Tinkerbell nodded. 'Mmhmm.’

'Wow.’

She sighed. 'And aren’t they perfect together - I’m so happy they finally found each other.’

I've seen a lot of comments & fic describe Hiroshi as a good man/good father/hero, & I just... maybe he once was some of those things & was trying to be them again before his death, but as you've so succinctly put in your recaps, he tried to fucking kill Asami. And people seem to forget that part? She may have found it in her heart to forgive him, but I doubt that takes away all the confusing, complicated feelings she must have about him & his sacrifice. It's not as simple as "I miss my dad."

I always thought about her line “at least I was able to forgive him” of meaning more like…”at least he heard me forgive him.” Because how much would it have broken Asami if her father died still thinking she partially hated him? She places everyone’s emotions before her own, even her homicidal father’s.

IMO, it was kind of clumsy retconning, but it was done for the benefit of Asami’s character arc. Like, it’d be one thing if he had just become a shamed Equalist, but he literally said “you are beyond saving” and tried to attack her. Even with Asami being the most forgiving, caring, perfect human that she is, I don’t see how that could be dropped.

That being said, for her character, of course it’s still a complicated dynamic. She may not know how to process her dad’s death because there’s still so many issues there. Like, let’s say hypothetically he had survived. Well, she’s now dating the Avatar, the person who he directly opposed, and a powerful bender to boot. Maybe his time in prison was eye-opening in an American History X kind of way, but it wasn’t shown to us, so for all we know, he still holds his very problematic views. And even in absence of that prejudice, I doubt that in that AU, Asami would suddenly be a happy, content, daughter…there’d most certainly be distance there. Ignoring the attempted murder, Asami was super close to him, and yet he hid his true self from her and assisted a terrorist.

Back to the universe where he died, Hiroshi pops out and talks about how he loves Republic City. Well, he likes it in the “purified” vision that Amon had, right? We needed more. Did Asami show Hiroshi the blueprints of the hummingbird while they played Pai Sho? Did Hiroshi make any other apologies rather than telling Asami she was the best “thing” he created?

During the Day of the Colossus, Asami “forgives him” by telling her dad that he’ll be the reason the city is saved if their plan works, and that she loves him. Given the fact that their risk of death was very, very high, this seems in keeping with Asami. Keep in mind, she couldn’t even bring herself to be mad at him when she visited him in 4x05 simply because he looked sad and older. So here he is, still sad and older, but actively assisting her to save the city. It was an apology for his benefit, but I don’t think it necessarily means Asami forgave everything that happened.

tl;dr: You’re right. It’s not as simple as “I miss my dad.” His death was a fucking awful and complex moment for her, and as I jokingly said in my recap “years of therapy in the making.” I think Hiroshi’s influence and untimely departure is going to haunt Asami for a bit, but fortunately she’s got a girlfrien who is more than happy to wade through that with her.
