the discworld series

I think Hagrid from Harry Potter and Sybil Vimes from Disworld would probably get along pretty well, especially given their similarities of both being large friendly people who are kind of obsessed with dragons.

Look imagine Hagrid helping out at her dragon sanctuary. Imagine Hagrid sitting down with numerous swamp dragons on top of him. He wouldn’t even mind the fact that they have a habit of spontaneously exploding. It brings back fond memories of the Blast-End-Skrewts (well fond for him if not for anyone else). Also lets be real, if a magical creature doesn’t possess the ability to seriously harm and/or kill him, it is not one Hagrid is that interested in.

Sybil would probably be very interested in seeing the Harry Potter-verse dragons. Her husband however, would really rather not.

on Big Deal Moments in Discworld

Guards! Guards! has one of the first Big Deal Discworld moments for me, and I’m not very good at articulating what that means.

The moment I’m thinking of is the dragon’s speech to Wonse – “we were supposed to be cruel, cunning, heartless and terrible. But…we never burned and tortured and ripped one another apart and called it morality.” That’s a passage that always makes me stop and reread it a couple of times. And it’s a small moment – it’s the only time we hear the dragon speak at all, and it’s a speech that has no bearing on the rest of the story. It could have been taken out of the book entirely and nothing would feel like it was missing. But the fact that it’s there is a Big Deal moment. The great big monstrous antagonist’s judgment of humanity is unavoidable in its accuracy.

And the Discworld series is full of moments like that. Sometimes it’s just one line, sometimes it’s a full scene, and most of the book is so full of shenanigans coming so quickly one after another that you don’t always see the Big Deal moments coming. We think of Pratchett as a humor/satire writer and yes, the books are hilarious, but in between the jokes are these Big Deal moments that casually rearrange our perspective and stick with us even after we think we’ve forgotten.

Then there are the other Big Deal Moments, that are Emotional Meteorite Strike Moments (e.g. the phrase “that is not my cow” can now instantly put me in the fetal position) but I’m having a hard enough time describing this one as it is so I’ll probably go on a tirade about those ‘round about that One Part in Feet of Clay. (You know the one.)

Fan art of the second Tiffany Aching book: A Hat Full of Sky. I love this series so much so far!

Some of the things in this book may well be familiar, and you will say ‘but everybody knows this.'  But the Discworld series, which on many occasions borrows from folklore and mythology, twisting and tangling it on the way, must be the most annotated series of modern books in existence.  And one thing I have learned is this: not many people know the things which everyone knows.

But there are some things we shouldn’t forget, and mostly they add up to where we came from and how we got here and the stories we told ourselves on the way.  But folklore isn’t only about the past.  It grows, flowers and seeds every day, because of our innate desire to control our world by means of satisfying narratives.
—  Terry Pratchett, “The Folklore of Discworld”

(the british library flickr+discworld 2/?)

The Patrician flashed one of those sharp, fleeting smiles to say that something that wasn’t very funny had nevertheless amused him. ‘Veni, vici…Vetinari.’

I think one of the things that I enjoy so much about the discworld novels is the sheer variety of characters, especially the female characters. It’s just so completely refreshing and they’re all unique and well created???
Like from Mrs. Cake to Nanny Weatherwax to Sybil Ramkin to Seargant Angua to Tiffany Aching to SUSAN STO HELLIT (loml) and more like. They’re not stereotypes. They’re as fleshed out and complex and as imperfect as the dudes. They’re wonderful and difficult and *present* and I LOVE IT. I love Discworld.

I haven’t really tried to draw these guys in forever ( I think I attempted once i middle school? haha)  But yes I really do adore this book, it’s very uplifting and my favorite thing to read whenever I’m feeling particularly down. I had more than a few asks like this about Good Omens in my inbox so I finally got around to sketching a little something. One day I’d love to have the spare time to draw out a comic of the scene just before this one! If you’re into the concept of a comedic apocalypse you’re going to want to take a peek at this book.

While you’re at it I highly recommend other works by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett too! (may he rest in peace) I adore these authors. Neverwhere, the Discworld series, The Sandman, and The Graveyard Book are always on my favorites lists!

Thanks for  all the support as always guys <33

I’d appreciate it if you didn’t remove the caption, too!

This is my contribution to the amazing Ladies of Literature Volume 2 project ( ladiesofliterature )! It was an honor to work alongside so many talented artists and to get to illustrate my favourite female book character as well!

This is Tiffany Aching from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novel series. She’s a young witch, struggling with growing up and finding herself and it’s one of my favourite book series to date.

Discworld Tattoo

Do you know a Discworld-familiar tattoo artist in the Los Angeles area?

I’m finally in a place (graduated! Full-time job! Savings!) where I can afford to get the tattoo I’ve been dreaming of for 6 years. It’s gonna be a Discworld tattoo. It’d be great if I found an artist who is familiar with the Discworld series. Bit of a long shot but who knows, LA is home to lots of tattoo artists and Discworld fans are many.

If you know of such an artist, please point me in their direction so I can reach out to them.
