the decadence of the new republic

It’s that special day— The Legend of Korra officially premiered on TV 5 years ago today, can you believe it’s already been half a decade?!

On April 14th 2012, Korra burst onto the scene with Welcome to Republic City and A Leaf in the Wind, starting an unforgettable new era of the Avatar world and franchise. It’s been five years of a city of unity and division, of the art of bending evolving before our eyes, of villains rising and falling, of nations falling and rising, of worlds converging, of light and dark, of service and sacrifice, of death and birth and rebirth, of mentors and guides and family and friends old and new, of heiresses and orphans, and of a fierce girl carrying it all on her shoulders with unyielding conviction and strength.

Thank you Korra! 💚❤️️💛💙 Here’s to five more years, and many more after that! After all, legends never die.

STAR WARS is really good for time travel fic, the urge to give the characters a chance to fix things, now that they have an idea of what went wrong or what to look out for, while still having to relive so many painful things, that balance of suffering and yet it’s worth it for the hope it offers, it’s exactly what the best fic is made of. I LOVE TIME TRAVEL FIC SO MUCH, so I’ve collected together a bunch of my favorites!

“star wars: bloodline” by claudia gray was a fucking wild read, y’all, like, major spoilers but i cannot believe leia in it, okay get ready for this, right, because this is the most carrie fisher thing anyone has EVER written leia organa as doing EVER

so towards the last third of the book leia gets outed as the daughter of darth vader. she’s been a senator in the new republic for two decades and done tons of good work, she’s a major political leader but this truth comes out and nobody gives a shit about her past accomplishments, they’re all “she can’t be trusted!” and “what if SHE’S a sith?” and all other sorts of bullshit

leia’s ostracized politically and knows she’ll never wield any sort of power in the senate again. so then, a couple nights later, when one of her few remaining friends throws a party, leia shows up, and she’s wearing a black dress with a cape, intentionally evoking darth vader imagery.

and her internal narration is basically like “welp if they’re all scared i’m the next vader anyway, might as well give them a fucking show,” and people 100% notice and whisper and comment, but she eats it the hell up, which is just… such a carrie fisher thing to do, both wearing that and enjoying it, and anyway this book is a gem in a lot of other ways and you should all read it, but i just had to share that, because the author, claudia gray, knows leia and knows writing and knows exactly what she’s doing.

Legend of Korra: Cold War AU

The main idea of this AU is essentially to extend the plot of Book 4: Balance, about the Earth Empire and Kuvira, into the entire series. With 3 seasons and a full 60 episodes run.

The main plot revolves around Korra trying to deal with the cold war between the United Republic of Nations and the newly formed Empire of Steel, and prevent the breakout of a second Great War.

Episode 1 Opening (narrated by Tenzin)

70 years ago my father, Avatar Aang, and his friends, ended the Hundred Year War, and brought peace to the world.

Together with Firelord Zuko, he formed the United Republic of Nations from the former colonies of the Fire Nation.

For decades, Avatar Aang kept the peace between the nations, old and new. But then, he died.

In his absense, the nations were thrown into chaos. Revolution swept across the Earth Kingdom, leading to the death of the Queen, and collapse of the nation.

Kuvira, a metalbender calling herself the Great Unifier, used her technology and resources to reunite the fractured nation under her leadership.

Now it’s my turn to help guide Avatar Korra, the successor to my father, in helping bring back peace and prosperity.

Though she’s young and lacks discipline, I believe Korra can save the world.

After that, the first episode of the series is very similar to the beginning of both Book 1 and Book 4.

Korra wants to go to Republic City to see Kuvira’s public appearance as she supposedly is about to hand over power to Wu, the crown prince. Tenzin is against this, so Korra sneaks in on a ship and goes anyway.

Of course, Kuvira denounces Wu and the Earth Kingdom, and declares herself the ruler of a new nation, the Empire of Steel. She makes a speech about how the rulers of the old nations failed their people, and how the United Republic of Nations is rightfully part of her empire.

Kuvira’s people attempt to assassinate Wu, and the rest of the episode is about Korra and Tenzin trying to save him as well as drive Kuvira’s forces off of Republic City.

Regular Episode Opening (narrated by Korra)

70 years ago my predecessor Avatar Aang and his friends ended the Hundred Year War and formed the United Republic of Nations.

For decades, Aang had kept the peace between all nations, old and new.

But with his death, chaos spread. The Earth Kingdom collapsed, and the Empire of Steel rose.

Now I, Avatar Korra, must take on Aang’s legacy, mend together a broken world, and prevent the breakout of another great war.

The rest of the series follows Korra’s training and adventures as she tries to balance the rising tension between the Republic and the Empire, and help quell the chaos that’s been spreading all over the world since Aang’s death.

599. Every time a new first year is sorted, if they are the first from their origin country (Dominican Republic, China, Madagascar, etc.) their country’s flag is added to the multiple ones on a wall. The world map painted right next to it is enchanted so that that new country is colored in to show all the different ethnicities that are in one house over decades of students

can you recommend some korrasami fics?

Of course I can! Man, I don’t even know where to start, but these are some of the ones that come to mind (they aren’t ranked in any particular order):

March of Progress by @threehoursfromtroy

The Avatar must protect nature, foster peace, and keep the world safe.
The CEO of Future Industries must expand, innovate, and, at the end of the day, turn a profit.

Korra and Asami have fallen in love, and fallen hard. But when their duties come between them, their world convulses around them, and their pasts still haunt them both, can the world’s most powerful couple survive?

~ I’ve recommended this many times and still stand by this fic (and the whole Comes Marching Home series). We get to see the development of Korra and Asami in terms of their relationship, their characterization and their hardships. Also, the author is an absolute sweetheart!

Place in the World by paxbananaKorra struggles to find her place in the world. Continuation-fic. Related to One on One.

~ Honestly, I think this may be one of my favourite ongoing korrasami fics so far. The author alternates between Korra and Asami’s perspective in this story and brings about brilliant characterization/introspection as well as culture (we get to experience a lot in regards to the Southern Water Tribe). Seriously… just read it when you have the time. (Yes, I know some people have a problem with the labels used in this story and I completely understand, but try to give it a chance. I think the author has been quite respectful in how they handled the whole situation - but, if this type of thing really does bother you, consider giving this fic a pass)

The Everthere by @guileheroine

Korra and Asami on the steady, special road to life partnership. A post-reunion, post(ish)-college roommate AU.

~ So, I’m not usually a fan of AU stories, but this one has left me stunned on multiple occasions. The characterization of Korra and Asami is divine, their relationship progression is so pure and beautiful and the story is captivating. It’s a slow burn story that is definitely worth your time!

(The characterization in this story reminds me of Nightmares and Daydreams by SorbetLaitier - another sort of slow burn type of story that I would highly recommend ~

Absence of Light by @sniperct

Ten years ago, Avatar Korra opened a spirit portal in the center of Republic City. In the decade since, Korra has overseen a new era of peace. But there are dangers old and new, creeping shadows threatening to strangle and choke out the light and throw the world back out of balance. In the absence of light, what hope remains?

~ I’ve recommended this to some people because it’s honestly one of the best stories that I’ve ever read (this too, has its own series called The Avatar and the Inventor). Here, we have a badass married Korrasami couple and a very interesting/dangerous villain. We also get to see some good ol’ characters from ATLA!

All These Broken Hearts on That Pole by Gummy

Korra knew this was insane. Absolutely utterly mad. The first time she ever stepped foot in a strip club and of course she had to fall for one of the strippers. The entire thing felt like a tired, worn out cliche. But cliche or not, something was happening and she sure as hell wasn’t going to let it slip through her fingers.

~ This is another AU involving a strip club - need I say more? I haven’t read this one in a while, but I would definitely say that it’s worth the read!

Parts to Play by @darling-gypsum

Asami Sato has been raised her whole life to distrust benders, but now, she doesn’t know quite what to make of the Avatar. The two girls bond as the Equalist threat looms over Republic City, but the threat could be closer than Korra realizes. Asami’s allegiances are tested. (designed to blend the “Asami Equalist AU” into most of the show canon, so Korrasami, Makorra, and Masami ships are all acknowledged and explored)

Unseen moments in the last two books, as Korra and Asami fly out of and back into each other’s lives.Sequel to “Parts to Play” Books 1 & 2.

~ This is definitely a must-read story! It takes an alternative path in books 1 & 2 with an equalist!asami narrative. Book 3 & 4 are more of what we are used to in the show. The characters really get fleshed out and we get to see lot of behind-the-scenes moments/interactions. A very beautiful story/series indeed!

Book 5: Light by @asami-snazz

A complete Book 5 story following Korra and Asami from the final and beyond as the couple navigate through their new relationship whilst also dealing with rising anti-spirit tension at home and considerable political instability in the rest of the Four Nations as Korra and Asami are tested more than ever before.

“The canon seemed to be being fired carelessly from the Spirit Wilds. Korra…No…Gut instinct told Asami that the Avatar would be there.”

~ I’ve always had a great liking for this story! Very nice characterization and relationship-building for both Korrasami  with a really neat plot! It starts out fluffy but gets very interesting as the chapter go on! We get to Asami have some amazing moments and we also get to see a bit more about Korra’s mental state. Highly recommend this!

Haikyuu!! + Fantasy Kingdoms AU

I’ll just leave this here… :3

The Anarchy of Karasuno

  • Once a powerful and prestigious country but lost its influence after angry citizens rebelled against its incompetent king.
  • Now a highly undeveloped kingdom with no central government, and land ownership is unofficially split between the leaders of various tribes.
  • Most influential tribe leaders include Sawamura Daichi, Sugawara Koushi, and Azumane Asahi.
  • Tribes often skirmish with one another for petty reasons but will just as quickly form alliances for the purpose of self-defense against a more powerful, common enemy.
  • Home of the masters of guerilla warfare.
  • Its landscape consists almost entirely of wilderness: sparse forests, vast fields of tall wild grass, and dangerous cliffs.
  • A kingdom that tends to mind its own business and in addition, is rarely provoked by other kingdoms because the land is valuable for neither farming nor mining.

The Aristocracy of Aoba Johsai

  • Very prestigious kingdom ruled by a small class of exceedingly wealthy and educated individuals.
  • Traditionally values skill and hard-work, so it’s very possible to become associated with the nobility through merit.
  • Boasts the most powerful cavalry on the continent, which makes up nearly 70% of its entire military force.
  • The aristocratic Oikawa family and the military family of Iwaizumi are some of the oldest in the country and have had a partnership for decades; Oikawa and other rich families are responsible for the costs of the military and in return the Iwaizumis act as generals and protect the nation.
  • Cities are characterized by the baroque style of architecture which reflects Seijoh citizens’ love for the finer things in life such as arts and music.
  • Has long been threatened by the close proximity of the expanding Shiratorizawa empire.

The Republic of Nekoma

  • A relatively peaceful nation bordered by the sea on three sides.
  • A new leader is elected every two years by an elected council and can only be ejected from the office before two years is up if the majority of council agrees to do so.
  • Historically defeated Shiratorizawa in an epic naval battle which is why the Empire leaves them alone now.
  • No distinct social classes; all of its citizens aren’t very educated, but most everyone has an abundance of practical knowledge.
  • Although the kingdom lacks in the natural resources department, it makes up for it by controlling all overseas trade and navigation.
  • Nekoma’s most influential captain of the navy is Kuroo Tetsuro, formerly a notorious pirate, and he is accompanied by chief navigator Kozume Kenma.
  • Nekoma ships can be distinguishable by their glossy, menacing red sails.

The Empire of Shiratorizawa

  • Consists of the kingdom of Shiratorizawa and several surrounding provinces gained through conquest
  • Largest nation in terms of land mass and occupies some of the best farmlands, which allows agriculture to sustains the kingdom’s wealth and powerful military.
  • Cities inspired by medieval Japanese architecture and fortified by thick walls to protect against siege.
  • All authority is held by Emperor and Military General Ushijima Wakatoshi.
  • Known for the tradition of taming birds of prey.
  • Currently on a mission to conquer the entire continent but has run into a mild inconvenience known as the Seijoh cavalry.

The Stratocracy of Fukurodani

  • Formerly a province of Shiratorizawa that persistently fought for independence until Shiratorizawa just went “eh, nevermind, do what you want.”
  • Retained the Shiratorizawa custom of taming birds, but now exclusively tames owls because those are pretty much the only birds that live in the thick forests of Fukurodani.
  • Ruled by a council of military officers who meet every two weeks to discuss issues and divide up duties.
  • Many adventurers come from Fukurodani and travel to visit the other kingdoms, making them great interpreters as well as spies.
  • Closely tied to the Republic of Nekoma because Fukurodani general Bokuto Kotaro was once friends with Nekoma naval captain Kuroo when they belonged to the same pirate crew.

The Legend of Korra: Lin Bei Fong [ESTJ]

OFFICIAL TYPING BY: mysterylover123

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Lin is a woman of plain-spoken logic. She’s chief of police and executes her job by constantly barking orders, maintaining strict authority, and making clear and concise demands of her subordinates. She’s very matter-of-fact and no-nonsense; she tells Korra to her face that she won’t get special treatment in Republic City just because she’s the Avatar, she expects responsibility and orderly behavior from Mako, and she’s brusque and blunt with her family members. She takes charge of any given new situation.

Introverted Sensing (Si): She still holds on to the scars of the past now. Whether it’s her decades old feud with her sister, her long-past breakup with Tenzin, or the bad first impression Korra made on her, Lin isn’t quick to forgive or forget. She’s precise and focused on details; she does things by the book and generally (but not always) plays by the rules. She doesn’t like to take risks (normally), preferring to play it safe. She often compares things to how they were in the past (“You should’ve seen air temple island after Tenzin broke up with me.”)

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Lin is willing to entertain different possibilities, but won’t take any of them seriously without proof and details (Te-Si) to back them up. She usually thinks about possibilities as a gateway to a larger goal. She occasionally creative and shows a knack for thinking on her feet to solve problems, generating new ideas for solutions on the spot. She’s willing to alter her opinions and forms them mostly based on outside evidence.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Lin doesn’t like to deal with feelings, and doesn’t discuss her own. She goes off to deal with her feelings on her own in Season 3, needing time and acupuncture to process them. When she does act on her emotions, they often come out in unhealthy ways, frequently also violent ones (i.e. attacking her sister, destroying air temple island, etc). Lin struggles to grasp her emotional problems and prefers to deal with tactics.

Nyiragongo’s lava lake

Between 1894 and 1977 the crater contained an active lava lake. On 10 January 1977, the crater walls fractured, and the lava lake drained in less than an hour. The lava flowed down the flanks of the volcano at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour on the upper slopes, overwhelming villages and killing at least 70 people. The hazards posed by eruptions like this are unique to Nyiragongo. Nowhere else in the world does such a steep-sided stratovolcano contain a lake of such fluid lava. Nyiragongo’s proximity to heavily populated areas increases its potential for causing a natural disaster.

The 1977 eruption raised awareness of the unique dangers posed by Nyiragongo, and because of this it was designated a Decade Volcano, worthy of particular study, in 1991.

The 1977 eruption was preceded by the creation of a new small volcano, Murara, a short distance away on the slopes of Nyamuragira.

@lurkingcrow replied to your post: @fireflyfish replied to your post: You know what…

You know, after the initial brain break Anakin is going to be thrilled - not only does it provide him with infinite teasing opportunities, but the kid has already shown the proper family attitude towards danger (run towards it!), authority (ignore it!) and injustice (fight it!) and he gets along with Ahsoka! His new nephew is great! Why didn’t Obi-Wan tell him sooner ? Hang on, does Korkie know? Or is there a hilarious “no, I am your father!” moment in the wings? :)

This whole thing is so amusing. You are so right: Anakin would be delighted.

You know, again: I’m not like, necessarily suggesting I believe that Obi-Wan actually slipped one past the goalie here, but THE WRITERS WERE CLEARLY BAITING US ALL, OK? The kid looks like that, and the entire episode he’s most prominently featured in is largely him bonding with Ahsoka while leading a posse of his friends into trouble that almost kills them even though he’s a kid Because Justice. That…sure sounds like one of the Kenobi-Skywalker clan to me. The whole thing could almost easily have been one of Baby-Wan’s Depressing Adventures, except that all of Korkie’s friends aren’t killed in front of his face.

And as much as I think this AU does need a Dramatic Parentage Reveal, I’m dying at the idea of Obi-Wan swinging by Mandalore on the regular to RAISE HIS KID WITH HIS SECRET WIFE and somehow keeping this whole thing under wraps for over a decade while being a General for the Republic, raising Anakin, AND becoming a Jedi Master who is on the Council. Like, how the hell is this guy finding time to DO all of this? And how is he not getting caught? Especially when his wife is the regent of the Council of Neutral Systems, and rules Mandalore?

Also, I want to know how Padme finds out about all of this. Because I bet it’s funny.

Reunion, a one-shot

I felt like rewriting this one and sharing it.

Bail Organa didn’t like to count the years. While some theorized that it helped pass time, he only thought it an unpleasant and cruel reminder of Alderaan’s last days. Chaos, confusion, woe. It already seemed so long ago, years, decades since the worst week Bail had ever lived through. Worse than the Clone Wars, worse than watching the Republic crumble, watching Palpatine rise to power, worse than watching a young Jedi student die to save him.

He and his wife had lost their daughter.

The report had come only shortly before the gigantic space station settled just on Alderaan’s horizon. “The entire crew,” the guard had reported to him and Breha, devastated. “Including the princess.” The entire crew of the Tantive IV, dead. His little girl, dead with them.

At first, he and Breha had denied it, refusing to believe that Leia had been caught and taken down so early into her mission, refusing to believe that she was really gone. His princess. His beautiful, bold and strong daughter- gone before she could discover her true destiny. There is another, a voice whispered within him. Bail had spent long nights praying that Obi-Wan had things under control. But that was when he’d finally given up hope. That had taken a few weeks. Before that, Bail, with his wife, had thrown himself into the grandest delusion and fled Alderaan in a desperate hope to save Leia. But Alderaan’s vivid end had drawn a deep crack in Bail’s armor and weeks of no other word on Leia’s condition had finally done it, sending the couple into deep mourning for the child of theirs that they’d gotten to hold. For she was gone, just like all the others.

Then, he and Breha, once queen and viceroy of the illustrious Alderaan, joined the flock of refugees and aimlessly wandered the lonely parts of the Outer Rim with not a credcoin to their names before hearing of a resettlement of refugees to their own haven, a new planet just for them. ‘New Alderaan’ the colorful captain had called it.

Suddenly, the freighter rocked a bit but quickly settled and all the passengers aboard exhaled a sigh of relief and they waited in tired anticipation for the captain to come back. Bail looked to his side where Breha was cuddled up, deeply asleep. “My dove,” he whispered, giving her hand a gentle squeeze and her eyes fluttered open. “We’re here.” In typical Corellian swagger, the captain strode into the back cabin and waved to them. “Alright,” he said. “We made it. Now, let’s all proceed in an orderly fashion, if you don’t mind. There are people outside who will show you to your new homes. And a line for food. We’ll be sure to get to everybody. Thank you for your patience.”

The couple got up from their seats and waddled out with everyone else, only slightly eager to be given a home that wouldn’t really ever feel like home. Once they made it off the freighter’s landing ramp, they were handed a pair of new clothes and pointed to a lunch line. The food was much better than Bail had imagined they would be given and he and Breha hurried to one of the tables set up in the barren field to eat. Around them, the other refugees conversed lightly, unalarmed by the Queen and Viceroy around as they were all on the same level now, all refugees, all poor and having lost something.

The two ate in silence until they heard children’s laughter nearby. A few children came running to their table, two boys and a girl. The girl stopped before Bail and said to him, “Sir, me and my brothers were playing and we lost our parents. Have you seen our mom?”

Bail faltered a moment before he could respond. The girl, small in stature, had big, round, light chocolate eyes just like his own Lelila and the more he thought about it, the further he became delusioned by these apparent similarities. It hurt. So, Bail shook away the memories and told her, “I’m sorry, dear. I wish I knew who your parents are, but I don’t.”

The little girl giggled at this and told him, “I’m sure you do. All the Alderaanians do. You don’t know the princess?”

 "The princess?“ Breha echoed.

 The girl nodded. "Yeah. Prince-”

"Jaya!“ a frantic voice suddenly cut through the conversation and the three siblings spun around to see a woman running to them. Bail couldn’t catch a glimpse of her face; she had her it buried in her children’s hair as soon as they were in her arms. "Jasa, Anakin, what did I tell you three about running around? I need to be able to see you.”

Bail and Breha met the woman to make sure the kids were leaving in safe hands and Bail said to her, “I take it you’re these kids’ mother?”

"Yes, thank you.“ She rose to her feet, swiping her hair past her ear as she continued, "I’m really sorry. I-” she stopped, now looking Bail in the eyes. “Daddy?”

It’s nighttime!

You know what that means?

A new chapter of Principle of Superposition! Chapter five is up here.

If you haven’t heard, I’m writing an obikin fanfic about our favorite two jedi on an undercover mission to a Republic terraformed planet gone wrong.

Here’s a quick summary.

Obi-Wan and Anakin are sent undercover on a mission to the Outer Rim planet of Bar Neth. Originally a desert planet, the Republic sequestered its land for an experimental terraforming project. After decades of colonization, Bar Neth has become a patchwork of lush farmlands and desert remains. A fellow Jedi Master has alerted the Council of smuggled goods aboard a small craft during a routine customs evaluation at the Mid-Rim hyperspace lane border. Headed for Bar Neth, the former Master-Padawan team don their least conspicuous civilian outfits and tuck their lightsabers away in hopes of learning more about a curious band of smugglers.

Things do not go as planned.

For those of you who are caught up with the latest chapters, here’s a sneak peek at chapter five!

General Hux

Glorying in the moment, General Hux stood at the head of the assembly flanked by his senior officers, all aligned atop a raised platform backed by an enormous crimson-and-black banner stamped with the insignia of the First Order. Enhanced by artfully concealed amplification, his voice boomed across the troops assembled on the parade ground.

“Today is the end! The end of the government incapacitated by corruption! The end of an illegitimate regime that acquiesces to disorder! At this very moment, in a system far from here, the New Republic lives and wheezes, staggering onward, depraved and ineffectual and unable in any way to support the citizenry it claims to serve. Meanwhile a host of systems are left to wither and die– without aid, without care, without hope. Drowning in its own decadence, the New Republic ignores them, unaware that these are its final moments.” A hand swept sharply downward.

“This fierce machine which you have built, to which you have dedicated your lives and labor and upon which we now stand, will being a final end to the worthless Senate and its dithering members. To their cherished fleet. When this day is done, all the remaining systems in their hundreds will bow to the First Order. And all will remember this as the last day of the Republic!”

Turning, Hux solemnly gave the signal as the assembled thousand turned to face the mountainous, snowy landscape.

New Jedi Order Headcanon

I had an idea for a  post-ROTJ New Jedi Order, where Luke does teach others, children and adults, and though it takes some time, the Jedi Order prospers.

Luke takes care of the Force training, but he also enlists Han and Chewie, and various other “disreputable” friends to help him teach “survival skills”, like Han taught him.

Skills such as how to override an electronic lock (this saves one Knight when she’s captured by slavers.  The Knight goes on to free an entire compound of slaves, and deliver the slavers to the local authorities, breaking the back of a massive multi-planetary slaving ring).  They also learn how to pick conventional locks.

Such as how to repair a ship while escaping from someone (another Knight used this to save a New Republic dignitary when Empire Loyalists attacked their vessel).

Such as how to create smuggling compartments in almost any ship (nearly every ship bigger than single man fighters the Jedi Order owns has those compartments.  They’ve saved hundreds of lives in the first decade alone).

Such as how to fire a blaster (clumsy and random they may be, but sometimes, lightsabers aren’t a good idea).  They learn other weapons, too.

Such as how to haggle, how to bargain, how to keep others from swindling you (the Jedi Order is able to save so much money that way, and remain on the good side of their suppliers as well).

Such as how to play card games (and cheat without the Force, too).

Such as how to tell drugged drinks from safe ones, again without using the Force.

In short, the New Jedi Order is undoubtedly Jedi, but the members know how to survive in the underbelly of the galaxy.  If, Force forbid, something like the purge ever happens again, the Jedi can drop out of sight, and still thrive.

Luke just hopes his Jedi never need to know such things.

The Galactic Civil War:

The Galactic Civil War, known as the First Galactic Civil War by the year 43 ABY, was a major galactic conflict fought primarily between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Alliance was a rebel faction dedicated to the restoration of the Galactic Republic, the government that the Empire had supplanted at the culmination of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY.

The origins of the conflict could be traced to the Galactic Senate during the final days of the Old Republic, sometime after the end of the Clone Wars, where dissenting and prominent Senators, such as Bail Organa and Mon Mothma, secretly opposed the powers and authority that Supreme Chancellor Palpatine continued to accumulate under the guise of security and war-time measures.
The war did not begin in its real sense, that of an Alliance against the Empire with its goals and ideals laid out for the galaxy, until nearly two decades after the rise of the Empire, when various Rebel leaders signed the Corellian Treaty and issued the Declaration of Rebellion. Likewise, several Imperial citizens, despite the Empire’s atrocities, ended up siding with the Empire as they were reluctant to join a group similar to the Separatists from the Clone Wars. Initially, the Empire, especially Palpatine, did not consider the Alliance a threat, but rather as a political tool to further consolidate power that would eventually lead to the Dissolution of the Imperial Senate and a massive, unprecedented military build-up. Resistance was galvanized after the Empire obliterated the planet Alderaan for Rebel sympathies, and after Luke Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star at the fateful Battle of Yavin. Thereafter that the threat posed by the Alliance became real to the Empire and more serious measures were drafted to restore Imperial control over the galaxy.

The decisive moment came at the Battle of Endor, when the Alliance, against overwhelming odds, defeated the Imperial Military and destroyed the second Death Star, killing Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader and some of the best minds in the Imperial High Command. From there, the Empire began to gradually decay and fragment, and despite resurgences under Ysanne Isard, Grand Admiral Thrawn, the clone of Emperor Palpatine, and Admiral Daala, over a period of fifteen years it was reduced to a mere remnant of its former-self, while the Alliance evolved and grew into the New Republic. Peace between the two warring factions was realized in 19 ABY with the signing of the Bastion Accords between Grand Admiral Gilad Pellaeon and Chief of State Ponc Gavrisom, ending over two decades of constant struggle. The Empire continued to exist as autonomous entity in the years succeeding war’s end, and would eventually enter into an alliance with its former enemy during the Yuuzhan Vong War, and emerge as the galaxy’s leading government over one hundred years later, seemingly bringing history back full-circle; however, the exploits of the Alliance and the New Republic were not forgotten, and the galaxy was still very different from what it had been during the Empire’s reign.
