the d men

Because there’s nothing in it for them: What exactly does marriage offer men today? “Men know there’s a good chance they’ll lose their friends, their respect, their space, their sex life, their money and — if it all goes wrong — their family,” says Helen Smith, Ph.D., author of “Men on Strike.” “They don’t want to enter into a legal contract with someone who could effectively take half their savings, pension and property when the honeymoon period is over. Men aren’t wimping out by staying unmarried or being commitment-phobes. They’re being smart.”

Unlike women, men lose all power after they say “I do.” Their masculinity dies, too. What’s left of it, that is. In the span of just a few decades, America has demoted men from respected providers and protectors of the family to superfluous buffoons. Today’s sitcoms and commercials routinely paint a portrait of the idiot husband whose wife is smarter and more capable than he.

There was a time when wives respected their husbands. There was a time when wives took care of their husbands as they expected their husbands to take care of them.

Or perhaps therein lies the rub. If women no longer expect or even want men to “take care of” them — since women can do everything men can do and better, thank you very much, feminism — perhaps the flipside is the assumption that women don’t need to take care of husbands, either. And if no one’s taking care of anyone, why the hell marry?

For women, the reason is obvious: kids. Eventually most women decide they want children, no matter how long they put it off to focus on their careers. So they often nab the best guy they can find, usually the one with whom they’re currently sleeping, and convince him to get married.

If the man refuses, we call him, as Smith notes, a “commitment-phobe.” But is that fair? Perhaps these men know all too well that women initiate the vast majority of divorces — anywhere from 65-90 percent, depending on demographics. And when they do, they take the kids with them and hang hubby out to dry with the help of a court system that’s heavily stacked in their favor. In the past, Mom got the kids because she was home with them doing the thankless, unpaid, mountainous work associated with that role. Today, neither parent is home, so there’s no reason the default custodial parent should be Mom.

So remind me, why would a man marry today?

No, really. What’s in it for him?

Some groovy 60s pop and psychedelia by way of Thailand and Singapore, and, dudes, how cool would it be to fast forward a generation or two and have a flower power era Avatar show?

That would be so dope, not gonna lie.  It’d be the Mad Men x Avatar crossover of my dreams.  Everyone would look so fuckin fly in Pan-Asian hippie robes and mukluks and the political systems would be so interesting to navigate.

The Air Nomads would be blazin’ with the Fire Nation and waterbonging with the Southern Water Tribe and stone pipin’ with the Earth Kingdom and then of course, vapin’ on some clouds just by themselves.

There’d be Women’s Lib up in the Northern Water Tribe and lesbian separatists on Kyoshi Island and and and …

Wait, what was I talking about again?

Anyway listen to this, it’s dope.  If anyone wants the compilation album, let me know and I’d be happy to share.

And if we’re talking about John winchester centric AUs I want to read, here’s one.

AU where Henry wasn’t attacked by Abbadon, became a Man of Letters, and then raised JOHN to become a Man of Letters.

Give me John and Mary’s Romeo and Juliet-esque story where neither of their families approve because MoL and hunters look down on each other. Give me the story where they say screw destiny and get together anyway, not knowing that Heaven and Hell planned that from the start. Give me Mary still making her deal with Azazel, and Henry coming around and helping them figure out what to do about it. Mary and John promised each other that their kids wouldn’t be anything but normal kids, but then Azazel kills Mary and John doesn’t have to flounder around trying to figure out what did it, he just has to to talk to his dad. The bunker probably has plenty of information on Azazel, and in the AU where the Men of Letters are still around, they have plenty of safe houses where Sam and Dean could go while John found the sonofabitch who murdered his wife.

Sam and Dean would have grown up as Men of Letters, not hunters, though I don’t think that would stop them from hunting. Give me John telling his children about their mother, who she really was. THAT would be a HELLA COOL AU if you ask me.

It was the kind of event she’d crash: the men and women were dressed to the nines in tuxedos and designer gowns. Her father was lucky she hadn’t gotten into trouble yet, honestly. Moving towards the bar, the girl picked up a flute of champagne.
