the commander thinks aloud

Ten years ago, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. All seven crew members onboard STS-107 died as their orbiter fell apart, piece by piece. While NASA suspected some damage may have occurred during their liftoff, they determined that there was nothing they could’ve done to prevent any of this from happening. This is a song for today.

Boys and girls in cars
Dogs and birds on lawns
From here I can touch the sun
Yeah yeah

Put your jackets on
I feel we’re being born
The Tropic of Capricorn is below
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

We stall above the pole
Still your face is young
As we feel our weight return
Yeah yeah

A trail of shooting stars
The horses call of storm
Because the air contains the charge
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

The radio is on
And Houston knows the score
Can you feel it?
We’re almost home
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

The crew compartment’s breaking up
The crew compartment’s breaking up
The crew compartment’s breaking up
The crew compartment’s breaking up
The crew compartment’s breaking up
The crew compartment’s breaking up
The crew compartment’s breaking up
This is all I wanted to bring home to you

This is all I wanted to bring home to you

The NASA space shuttle program defunding just kinda registered with me this morning when I was thinking my thought things on the train trip to work.

I always wanted to be an astronaut. Not for real - I’m not gifted with the maths and sciences - but that thought of exploding into the weird scariness that is outer space is something I’ve dreamt about constantly.

I’m gunna go eat some dippin dots today.

(By the way, this is my favorite song about someone dying in a rocketship explosion)

Yesterday Josiah Lee and I filmed Isobel Ward performing the Commander Thinks aloud written by John Roderick (The Long Winters). In October of this year it will be ten years old. I found this song when I was in high school and is very special to me. Please watch and support passingpanacea.

Also check out episode 28 of Song Exploder to hear John Roderick talk about the song and how it came to be.

So, it turns out Adam Savage can sing. Really well.

John Roderick performing “The Commander Thinks Aloud” on JoCo Cruise Crazy (by frithuswith) (Second angle via Jason Roop.)

This was literally the first time I’d ever heard Roderick’s music and voice. This video. From the moment he began singing I lost all my breath. Then I cried. When I stopped crying I played it again and again like a ding dong until I exhausted myself and fell asleep. When I woke up, I got busy being a new fan. Even after watching this so many times, marveling at how he hardly needed a mic, hearing people in the audience crying… I missed what happens at 3:27. I don’t know about all you nerds, but I think I’ll cry the rest of the wait through JCCC4 and eagerly await whatever Roderick brings home to us this year. - Jade Gordon

“The Commander Thinks Aloud” is one of my favourite songs of all time, but no matter how many times I hear it I still can’t make it through the song without crying.
