Patrick Ness is a brilliant author, and I love his work. Obviously, Chaos Walking is my favourite series and I’ll give you some reasons why yo.
-In most novels I’ve read, the characters don’t seem real. They have this glossy coat to them, so they seem almost plastic and unrelatable. However, in Chaos Walking the characters have emotions and they feel like real people. Take Mayor Prentiss for example; he was a dick, but he still had feelings and emotions just like everyone else. Most antagonists seem robotic and surreal, but what made the Mayor more terrifying for me was how human he really was.
-Patrick Ness made an amazing love story, but it wasn’t focused on the romance. He develops the relationship between Viola and Todd, showing every small detail. To begin with they hated each other, and were only together to survive. As you proceed through the books, you as the reader feel the special bond they have developed over the time spent together. And whenever Todd says “Viola?” my heart tears in two omg.
-The series covers many issues related to war, power, terrorism, sexist society, misogyny and all kinds of good stuff! It also can apply to everyday life, and is almost used as a social construct to show what will happen if we don’t change our ways and I love that ah.

@fallenwithstyle like I said to @thelonelybrilliance I think it’s best to go in mostly blind. That being said, I can give you an idea of what it’s about: basically the Chaos Walking series is the story of a vaguely Huck Finn sort of boy protagonist (thematically the story shares some ideas with Huckleberry Finn, especially the man vs. society themes and morality in relation to societal construct) who begins the first novel as a country boy whose best friend is his dog. Not very sci fi at all, eh? Except the small town he lives in is the only town established on an alien world by the survivors of a human expedition years before. And there are no women survivors; Todd is the only boy, surrounded by grown men. And a peculiar side effect of living on this planet is that everyone is telepathic: they can all hear each others’ thoughts, all the time, to a maddening degree (beautifully and creatively expressed on the page by overlapping lines of text in varying sizes/fonts/etc). There are no secrets in Todd’s world–or so he thinks. Until he finds a crashed space pod in the woods. And, in that pod, he finds a girl … Whose thoughts he cannot sense at all.
I mean, with the likely approaching cancellation of class, can I put forward the suggestion of fandom migrating to Chaos Walking? It’s a book series by Patrick ness and doesn’t have anything to do with dr who BUT does take place on an alien planet and it’s a really good but underrated book series. The first one is callled the knife of never letting go and also they’re making a film of it that begins production this summer
