My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is a victim of such senseless violence around the world. We must condemn terrorism in all its forms. We must condemn violence, inequality, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, bigotry, and hatred in every form. We must find another way to co-exist peacefully on this planet. Right now people around the world are stuck in perpetual warfare, where the arms and weapons industry makes billions of dollars from conflicts. Where young people attending a concert can be brutally killed and never return home. Where an innocent 12 year old black child can be murdered by a police officer. Where two men trying to protect two muslim girls can die at the hands of a white supremacist. We are not safer because of this endless cycle of violence and ignorance. Do not let hate divide us. Do not let hate win.

Black History Month: Dorothy Counts and Ruby Bridges

In 1957, fifteen-year-old Dorothy Counts was the first black student to attend the previously all-white Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. She didn’t even make it into the building before she was spat on, targeted with thrown trash and told to “go back to Africa.” 

As an adult, she is again fighting the resegregation of schools that began in the 1990s and 2000s. The district now has a student assignment plan where most kids go to neighborhood schools close to where they live, or to magnet and charter schools with limited numbers of seats. This means that high-resourced schools filled with affluent students are often located in different neighborhoods to schools with low-income students. 

“[Harding High School] did change my life, but changed my life to say, ‘This is what happened to me,’ but I want to make sure with what I do in life, those kinds of things don’t happen to other children,” Counts said. (x)

Ruby Bridges is the little girl depicted in Norman Rockwell’s “The Problem We All Live With.” At age six, she integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960. “I was going to school that day. But the lesson that I took away that year in an empty school building was that none of us knows anything about disliking one another when we come into the world. It is something that is passed on to us,” Bridges said. “We should never look at another person and judge them by the color of their skin. That is the lesson I learned in first grade.”

“I think it is fair to say that if it hadn’t been for you guys, I might not be here and we might not be looking at this together,” President Barack Obama told Bridges when “The Problem We All Live With” was displayed at the White House. (x)

Dungeon Crafting: Puzzle Dungeons

Now, I don’t know if you people have seen Mark Brown’s miniseries on YouTube known as Boss Keys, but it’s pretty great. It picks apart and analyzes some of my favorite dungeons from the Legend of Zelda games and finds out what makes a dungeon a Zelda dungeon. I have always loved these dungeons because they have a lot of density and force you to explore the space slowly and think your way through its puzzles. Definitely check out Boss Keys. From what I learned from those videos plus my own experiences as a DM, I’m going to try and detail how to create a Zelda-like puzzle dungeon. There are a few hallmarks that you should hit on:

Dungeon Density

Each area in the dungeon should be complex. It should have several things to interact with in each room other than the monsters or guardians. Everything doesn’t have to be immediately useful or usable, but it should provide context for the dungeon. For ideas, think what the dungeon was used for and research what sorts of things might be in an ancient tomb, lost temple, or forgotten keep. Have certain puzzle elements stand out. A good example from the Legend of Zelda is the eyeball above a closed door. I would stray away from that type of “puzzle” as it’s very well-known, I assume, that you have to hit the eye to open the door. On the other hand, a well-known puzzle like that could signal to the players that this is going to be one of “those” dungeons.

Making a dungeon complex and dense will mean that you have less rooms to populate, and will make it feel robust and well-used. It will also give a feeling of slight confusion for the players as they try to organize all of the information you’re giving them, but as the dungeon progresses, they can pick and choose which parts of the dense dungeon are integral to solving the dungeon!

Hub Areas

With all of that dungeon density I’ve been talking about, it’s good to have some sort of hub area. It could be a large room, a safe sanctuary, or have some overbearing landmark for players to imprint on. This will be the main part of the dungeon that they remember and can rely on. They will pay the most attention to this hub. So if this hub is a main part of solving your dungeon puzzle, they will notice changes made to the room very easily. For instance, a hub room could be a gaping chasm with bridges that seem to be mechanical. When certain levers in other parts of the dungeon are pulled, some pathways in the hub open up and some close off as the bridges ascend, descend, or turn. Back in my post about dungeon tempo, this creates a nice rhythm for players to always come back to a room that they’ve cleared and notice progress.

Branching Paths

Branching paths are a key part of puzzle dungeons. Don’t have a dungeon that is all one path that railroads players to the end of the dungeon with a puzzle for each room. Players need to be able to explore and discover the available paths in the dungeon and find the path for themselves. In the Boss Keys miniseries I mentioned, Mark constantly differs Legend of Zelda dungeons by whether they make you find a path versus making you follow a path. I personally enjoy finding the path and I think most players do too. It is key in creating what are known as…

A-Ha Moments

An a-ha moment is not that feeling you get when listening to Take On Me, but it’s pretty close. It’s that feeling a player gets when they figure out a puzzle by suddenly putting two and two together. There are a few aspects to create this in dungeon and level design:

  • Foreshadowing: implying that one part of the dungeon must be revisited later or implying something further in the dungeon exists. Laying this groundwork puts thoughts in players’ heads to help them markedly acknowledge that it’s okay to leave this area, because something lies ahead.
  • State Changes: the environment of the dungeon or its parts changes based on the actions of the players. This is the “puzzle” part of the a-ha moment. Pressing a button to change gravity, move a pylon, or change water levels can would count as a state change. Even acquiring a key item that can affect the dungeon or the players’ movement would count (see Link’s Pegasus Boots, Hover Boots, Silver Gauntlets, etc.)
  • Backtracking: After the state change, the dungeon has shifted. Some areas that were once inaccessible can now be accessed, and areas that were once open have closed off. This forces the players to backtrack. Where do they backtrack to? The place that foreshadowed the backtracking.

How does this look in practice? Let’s make an example:

The players enter a dungeon and quickly make it to a hub area with four doors. three of the doors have a bridge extending from it to a central platform. The platform and bridges are 100 ft. above a pit of spikes, which are very satisfying to kick the kobolds in this room onto. Once players tire themselves of punting kobolds, they notice that the central platform has a large plinth with a stationary mirror set into it. The mirror is facing one of the directions of the bridges. The mirror can’t be easily moved without tools, and it has no apparent use yet. The players move on to one of the doors connected by the bridge.

The players go through several chambers, fighting monsters and avoiding traps, when they find a room with a lever in it. When pulled, they hear a low rumbling and grinding of stone elsewhere in the dungeon. When they return to the hub room, the central platform and bridges have rotated, allowing passage to the door that didn’t have a bridge leading to it before.

Down this new route, the players find a stone button with an angel relief on it. After pushing a huge rock onto it, they hear another rumbling. On returning to the hub room, an angel relief is now visible on the wall as a stone slab has moved away to reveal it.

The yet unexplored room is still accessible by the bridge, and after exploring down that path, the players find a crank near a gilded relief of a sun. The crank opens up a sunroof in the hub area. The sun (if daytime) shines light onto the central mirror in that room, which then reflects it out in one direction. The only problem is, the beam of light from the mirror isn’t facing the way the PCs want (towards the revealed angel relief in the hub area).

Realizing that they need to point the mirror so the light shines on the angel relief, they must backtrack to the room with the lever that rotates the bridges and mirror until the mirror is oriented the way they want.


This example has density. It’s essentially four rooms with all the things they need to solve a puzzle in the hub area (the central room with the bridges). It could use more density though with more puzzle intertwined throughout some filler rooms or with more things to do in each room; I was light on description for the purpose of the example. It has three branching paths (four if you include where they entered from). The mirror foreshadows a light puzzle, and the sun icon foreshadows the opening of the sunroof. The bridges, angel relief, and sunroof all exist in the hub area and change states based on the players’ actions in the rest of the dungeon. Players have to backtrack to the room that changes the bridge orientation so they can rotate the mirror to face the right direction. This is a fairly simple puzzle, but in the context of a session of D&D where the story less shown and more told, it can prove more difficult. Keep all of these factors in mind when making a puzzle dungeon, and don’t forget to watch Boss Keys!

forest towns -

fairy forest - filled with mushrooms and jacob ladders and even weeds for a overgrown natural look, scatter ores about the town and use pwps like the stone tablet and the statue fountain

woodland forest - filled with mushroom, lots of flowers, stumps and dead trees. use wooden bridges, and picnic blanket qr’s on the ground and use pwps like water wells and streetlights

dark/forbidden forest - harry potter style, you could have your characters based on mythical creatures  centaurs, grawp the giant, or non harry potter themed mythical creatures. 

witch/fairy town - 

each house belonging to a different sort of witch/fairy and themed to relate to them. lots of ores around town and fairy rings. i found purple and black flowers give off a really nice mythical vibe in burrow.

farm town -

using pwps like the scarecrow and the windmill, more open space, red roofs on your houses with matching red flowers, turnips about town and there’s many qr codes with growing crops on (writing this am like woah i wana make tht)

national park town - 

defined paths with bench pwps lining them, garbage can pwps and street lamps. i’d have villagers set off to one side of the town in a village set up, a park area with jungle gym and lots of picnic blanket qr codes laid about. 

horror town -

with dead trees, black flowers and wilted flowers, custom design signs with warning signs on

halloween town - 

orange and black themed town, villagers like kiki, bella, cherry, pietro and stinky would be great for a town like this.

gothic town -

black and wilted flowers, dead trees. again bella and cherry would be good villagers for this style of town.

winter towns -

christmas town - snowy, red flowers, presents scattered around town, santa’s workshop, elfs house with the attic filled with lots of beds .

frozen over town - white and blue flowers, illuminated pwps, everything icy and white. fountains would look really cute in this town set up with blue flowers.

colour themed town -

eg. pink town with pink flowers, pink villagers, pink houses

all one type of villager town -

eg, all frogs and have a pond themed town. (if you can map edit, make sure you have lots of little ponds!)

pastel town -

pick cutesie villagers with pastel house exteriors, some of the new amiibo villagers will be perfect for this. 

seaside/beach town -

houses themed on beach huts, tropical bushes and bright coloured flowers or alternative blue and white nautical theme

holiday resort town - 

if you have hacks you can put palm trees on land, also using the island bushes (i have forgotten their names but the big colourful flowery ones) have the houses set out like cute little holiday villas and the villagers all wearing hawaiian shirts.  

disney town - 

4 different disney princesses with houses that match their stories. e.g. snow white with the 7 dwarfs house and all their little beds. 

future town -

ribbot would be great for this. 

ancient egyptian town - 

with ankha and lucky, using the pyramid pwp.

underwater themed town -

hack the ground to be desert like sand, have lots of shells around. the octopus villagers would word great for this. alternatively a little mermaid themed town with ariel and ursula as characters. 

old fashioned town - 

based on a certain era e.g. tudors or victorian times. 

town based on a movie - 

disney movies, harry potter, grease, the addams family, the wizard of oz. there are infinite ideas with this one. 

sweets/candy themed town -

there are lots of path qr codes about on tumblr for this idea.

regular town -

set out like an actual town, with road qr codes as the path and traffic signal pwps. have your player houses set out like shops, cafes, museums, cinemas. 

First Aid Basics

I just got certified in CPR and First Aid last month with the American Heart Association. I wanted to share this information with you, because a lot of what we see on TV is not at all accurate as to what you’re supposed to do to actually help someone. Here are some of the topics that were covered:

First Aid Basics

Here are the steps you should follow when addressing a situation where a person may be injured/unconscious: 

  • Check to make sure the scene is safe- you are no help to anybody if you also get hurt
  • If the person is responsive: “Are you okay?”
  • If they are unresponsive, hit their shoulders hard and yell: “Are you okay?” to see if you can rouse them
  • Phone 911 and put the phone on speaker (you can delegate this task to somebody else if you’re not alone)
  • Have somebody get a First Aid kit (don’t leave the person if you’re by yourself unless the 911 operator tells you to)
  • Is the person conscious? Unconscious?
  • Check them for any obvious signs of injury
  • Check them for medical jewelry

Remember

  • Time is of the essence! Be decisive and confident. 
  • Don’t be afraid to call for help and assign people tasks
  • You can only perform CPR on a flat service. If a person needs CPR and is on a bed or in a chair, move them to the floor immediately. Don’t worry about hurting their head or anything, if they don’t get CPR immediately, their life expectancy is significantly less. (See my CPR post for full details)
  • Do not move the person unless the area they’re in is unsafe. If you have to move the person, drag them by their clothes and pull them to safety.

Adult Choking

There are both mild and severe cases of adult choking. In a mild case, the person choking will be able to make a sound or cough loudly. Typically these cases resolve themselves. 

  • Ask: “Are you choking? Can I help you?”
  • If the person cannot make a sound or cough in response, they are suffering from severe choking.
  • Walk around back of the person and put your arms around them
  • Make a fist with your dominant hand
  • Place your fist slightly above the belly button and below the chest bone.
  • Grasp the fist with your other hand
  • Give quick upward thrusts
  • If the person is overweight or pregnant, put your arms around the person’s armpits.

If you are unsuccessful in removing the blockage, the person will quickly become unresponsive. You will need to perform adult CPR and call 911.

After chest compressions (see above link) check person’s mouth to see if the thing they choked on is visible. If it is visible, remove it. Never going digging around in someone’s mouth

Amputation

  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • Get a First Aid kit
  • Both these steps can be delegated to someone else if they’re around
  • Put gauze on the wound and apply pressure until the bleeding stops
  • Do not remove the gauze if it’s bled through- this will remove any blood clots that have formed. 
    • If the gauze is bled through, add more gauze on top and keep applying pressure until the bleeding stops
  • Clean the amputated part with water
  • Warp the amputated part with dressing 
  • Put the amputated part in a small plastic bag
  • Get a larger plastic bag and fill it with equal parts ice and water
  • Put the small plastic bag inside the large plastic bag
  • Label the bag with person’s name and time of the injury

Asthma (How to Operate an Inhaler)

People diagnosed with asthma will typically be aware of it and may have an inhaler on them. If someone has an asthma attack:

  • Ask them: “Are you okay? Do you need your inhaler?” 
  • The person will probably be able to give some sort of indication in response
  • If they need their inhaler: 
    • Locate the inhaler
    • Put the medicine (metallic capsule pictured below) in the inhaler if it is not already in there, it will click into place
  • Shake the inhaler to activate the medicine
  • Attach the mouth piece if it’s unattached (not all inhalers have one, it is not pictured below)
  • Remove the cap (cap is darker blue piece pictured below)
  • Have the person put their head back
  • Put the inhaler in the person’s mouth
  • Push down on the canister and have them breathe out slowly
  • They should begin to feel relief immediately, but you should still have them sit down and take it easy for a while
    • Call 911 if they are still having difficulty breathing after the inhaler has been administered

Bee Sting

Usually bee stings present only mild irritation and pain. If the person stung has a severe allergic reaction, you will need to call 911.

  • Get a first aid kit
  • Scrape away the bee stinger and venom sack using a credit card or something similar in nature
  • Wash the affected area with lots of soap and running water
  • Wrap a bag of ice in a towel and place it over the affected area for 20 minutes or until the pain is gone
  • Watch the person for up to 30 minutes for signs of an allergic reaction
    • Call 911 if they present any classic allergy symptoms

Bleeding from Nose

  • Have the person lean their head forward
  • Get a First Aid kit
    • Or have someone else get one
  • Have the bleeding person apply pressure to the bridge of their nose using gauze from the First Aid kit
  • Do not remove the gauze if it’s bled through- this will remove any blood clots that have formed. 
    • If the gauze is bled through, add more gauze on top until the bleeding stops
  • Call 911 if the bleeding lasts longer than 15 minutes

Heat Cramps/Dehydration

Can lead to heat exhaustion! These typically happen when someone is dehydrated and tries to do lots of physical activity.

  • Have the person sit down and cool off
  • Have them drink something with sugar and electrolytes
    • Water will work in a pinch but sugary drinks and gatorade are preferred

Heat Exhaustion

  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • Have the person lie down
  • Cool the person by pouring water on them or wetting them with wet cloths until they begin to act normally
  • Have them drink something with sugar and electrolytes
    • Water will work in a pinch but sugary drinks and gatorade are preferred
  • Wait with them until help arrives

Opioid Overdose

My instructor said that these will often happen in an unsafe or an isolated environment. Always check to make sure that the scene is safe- look out for needles. 

Naloxone is used to revive people who have overdosed on opioids. If you find someone who has overdosed on opioids you happen to have naloxone on you and know how to administer it, the American Heart Association recommends that you use it instead of waiting for help to arrive.

Responsive:

  • Yell for help
  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • Wait with the person until help arrives

Unresponsive

  • Yell for help
  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • Perform five cycles of adult CPR
  • Wait for help

Seizure

Seizures are abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Typical seizure symptoms: spasms, muscle rigidity, and unconsciousness. Seizures typically last between 60-90 seconds before the person gains consciousness. 

  • Do NOT touch the person who is having a seizure
  • Do NOT put anything in their mouth
  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • If there are people around, ask them to get a First Aid kit while you wait with the person having the seizure
    • Don’t leave the person having a seizure if you are alone
  • Move objects away from the person having the seizure so that they don’t knock into them
  • If possible, place a small towel/pad underneath the person’s head
  • If the person starts vomiting, turn them over on their side so that they don’t choke
    • If possible use gloves and an eye mask from a First Aid kit to avoid exposure to bodily fluids
  • After they come to, they may be bleeding from the mouth. 
    • Use gauze from a First Aid kit to stop the bleeding
    • Have them apply pressure with the gauze until the bleeding stops
  • Stay with the person until help arrives

Splints

Splints should be significantly longer than the injured area. They’re used to constrict movement, so the person is injured should not be able to move freely once the splint is applied. Splints are use to treat broken/dislocated bones. It’s very difficult to tell if a bone is actually broken or just dislocated, so don’t worry about it and just splint the thing.

  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • Get a First Aid kit
  • Both these steps can be delegated to someone else if they’re around
  • Put on gloves/eye glasses from the First Aid kit to avoid contamination from bodily fluids
  • Cover exposed wound area with gauze
  • Do not remove the gauze if it’s bled through- this will remove any blood clots that have formed. 
    • If the gauze is bled through, add more gauze on top until the bleeding stops.
  • Place a strip of rigid material underneath the injured area
  • Use gauze/dressing from the First Aid kit to secure the splint by wrapping material above and below the injured area
    • Never tie material directly over the injury
  • Have the person stay as still as possible until help arrives

Stroke

Strokes are caused from blockage/bleeding from things like blood clots. Typical signs of a stroke: face drooping (or numbness), arm weakness (or numbness), and speech difficulty. There is nothing much you can do except wait with the person and try to make them comfortable until help arrives.

  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • Note the time that the stroke symptoms began (this will help hospital technicians)
  • Stay with the person until help arrives

Tourniquets

Some First Aid kits will come with a pre-made tourniquet. If your kit does not have a tourniquet you can make one fairly easily. Tourniquets should only be used for injuries where the person is squirting blood. No squirting blood? Use a splint.

  • Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
  • Get a First Aid kit
  • Both these steps can be delegated to someone else if they’re around
  • Put on gloves/eye glasses from the First Aid kit to avoid contamination from bodily fluids
  • Fold cloth or a bandage so that it’s long and an inch wide
  • Wrap the the bandage/cloth two inches above the wound
    • Never apply a tourniquet bandage/cloth on a joint (like elbows or knees). 
  • Find a small stick
  • Place the small stick atop the cloth/bandage and tie it there
  • You can now turn the small stick to tighten the cloth/bandage
  • Have the injured person lay down and try to move as little as possible
  • Do not remove the tourniquet- even if the bleeding stops.
  • Wait until help arrives.
